    I think it would have been a better experiment if they had looked with the microscope directly after shaving. It would have been easier to tell which hairs were longer and would have eliminated any variables presented by the rate of hair growth.

    I like that you really dove into this wholeheartedly. I don't shave anymore, just have my barber trim up my beard and call it a day. When I did shave, i used dollar shave club and have to agree that the shave butter is the best stuff for disposable razors. If I were to start shaving again, I think a safety razor would be my chosen method.

    I don’t think this was a fair test cuz like the hair around you legs really vary. In certain areas it’s thicker or longer or there is more hair in one area, so dividing your leg like that for each shaver isn’t really the wisest thing to do...

      Safety razors are best for shaving men and for women too, yes its does take a little practice, MUHLE SAFETY RAZORS, closed comb are the best for new starter its mild, but you need to find the blades are suitable for your skin, some blades are slightly more aggressive than others so once you find the blades bingo you'll be set..
      Trick to using safety razors is let the weight of the razor do the work.

  • @abluequaker5486
    @abluequaker5486 5 ปีที่แล้ว +310

    So there's no 'pink tax' whatsoever. The extra cost incurred when buying women's razors is the extra material in the handle, the bumper guard, and the numbing lotion/powder near the blades.

      that and pink plastic is simply more expensive. not every color of plastic cost the same to produce. also when you can trick woman into paying more for certain features then why not where as with men they just dont care as long as it works they dont care if ti has pretty colors or skin lotion built in.

      @Marcophage I shave everything with it. Including my face (peach fuzz) and the private parts. It’s not more dangerous than a normal plastic razor. Use some sort of shaving cream or conditioner or whatever and keep the skin a bit tens by stretching. But that’s what I do with a plastic razor too. The only place i would avoid shaving with a safer razor is in between buttcheeks, as it has exposed blades on two sides. But I wouldn’t shave there anyway for multiple reasons.
      My razor has a nice weight to it and I even feel like I irritate my skin less because I don’t need to apply any pressure with the blade, just kinda drag it along the skin.
      If you have any other question, please feel free to ask!

The friendship between you and Olivia is so sweet and funny. To anyone reading I suggest trying out safety razors! I contemplated and did research for a long time and I was really scared but I finally mainly made the change because I wanted to reduce my plastic use but there are so many benefits! I get a wayyyy closer shave, my skin is smoother, the hair grows out softer so I don't feel like a prickly hedgehog, and I don't have to shave as often! I personally have found my armpits to be the toughest to get but you really just have to take your time with it!

  • @brandishwar
    @brandishwar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    When you look at the pure material cost of the mens vs women's razors, that almost completely explains the cost difference. And as Woody pointed out at the end, they are designed for different use cases - women's razors designed more for shaving in a shower or bath, which will require more materials, meaning higher material cost. Now you can use a Mach 3 in the shower - I've done that - and other men's razors as well, but be careful with a safety razor in the shower unless you have a rubber grip slipped onto the handle.
    The rest of the cost difference is demand. A lot of men have foregone shaving entirely, choosing to maintain a beard. I personally don't shave year-round. But a lot of women do, and likely a lot more women than men proportionally-speaking shave year round. And shave a much larger surface area of their body. Men typically only care about their face, so the blades will last longer on a men's razor than a woman's razor in the typical use case. All of which increases demand, which keeps prices higher.
    Nothing is stopping women from buying men's products. Or going with a safety razor and traditional shaving cream. If you're in Bath and Body Works, there is a small section of men's products there which includes shaving products. They carry a very good shaving cream that is always on sale at 3/$20 for a pretty decent sized tube. Even if you use a standard cartridge razor or disposable, I highly recommend that route anyway as it's more economical in the long run, and friendlier for the environment compared to the stuff in an aerosol can.

      Do it! I got one last year and I'll never go back. The first two shaves are a little scary, but you'll get used to it super quickly. Just remember to shave without pressure (if you're anything like me, you probably pushed the cheapo-plastic ones down a little to get a closer shave). The weight of a safety razor plus super sharp blade do that for you. I've never once cut my leg, ankle, knee or anything; one time a got a little nub in the bikini area because I didn't consider that a normal razor blade is sharp on both sides. (Btw, this is very nice when shaving legs because when you have too much shaving cream/soap/hair on one side, you just flip the razor and shave the same amount of skin with the other side of the blade - which means way less rinsing. AND the hair get off the razor just by rinsing, no fiddeling with the blade.) Honestly, I can only recommend it. Also, in case you still have grandfathers, I suggest you ask them about shaving when they were young. Mine were super happy to explain to me how to clean and care for the razor, blades, etc., and even showed me their razors they got about 65 years ago. Sorry for the long text, I got real excited. Have fun with the safety razor!

    My 2c's, I personally use an "old fashioned" safety reason for a few reasons. Much cheaper, I personally find it's a closer shave, and less waste (only disposing of the single blade rather then the whole razer).
    Once you get used to shaving with a safety, I also find that I get less nicks and cuts with it because it makes me slow down and focus on the blade. 😅
    E: I've found that a good way to start is to just lightly rest the razer on your skin and pull the razer up with no downward pressure is applied (gravity only), you'll get a feel for what angle to take it at. Take it slow and use lots of shaving product.

    I WANT TO MAKE A STATEMENT ABOUT THE SCHICK HYDRO SILK!!!!!!! I have eczema! I have tried practically every razor on the market lol. Trying to find a razor that will give me a close shave but also not put me in absolute agony is extremely difficult. And I, as someone with eczema, swear by the Schick Hydro ones. They even make replacement blades that are more gentle for sensitive skin- aka more "numbing" quality and added aloe vera in the little gel part. So I think it's important to note that all skin is different- and where I would love to use good ol fashioned few blades and shaving cream, it just doesn't work for my skin- which by the way if you dont know about eczema it's basically like the spoiled middle child who throws a fit anytime anything isnt exactly right lol. So, from someone who's tried everything------- you cant know what's best until you've tried it for yourself 😉 Just saying 😊💕 SIDENOTE- This video is super amazing and informative and Michelle I love you! 😋❤

      I have struggled with eczema too over the years, you can cure it though. In short is is acids and toxins leaching out of your skin because your kidneys are struggling to clear your lymphatic system. You have to detox your body. Add lemons and limes to your daily diet, that alone has made mine go away in the past, they are astringent and will help break up stagnant lymphatic fluid so it can be released from the body. Also taking Activated charcoal baths can help pull the toxins out of your body, there is lots on google about this method and this alone keeps people's eczema at bay. Bentonite Clay is also good at pulling toxins out of the body. Doing some sort of detox will really help you in the long run though, try looking up Dr. Morse here on youtube, he has 100's of videos explaining how to detox and heal the body. You don't have to struggle with eczema, it is completely curable even if doctors and dermatologist say that it is not.

      I also have eczema and my advice is to never shave unless you have to.
      Perhaps it’s different for me because I am a guy and the stigma is different and it’s more acceptable for me to have hairy legs and arms. So I acknowledge my privilege and don’t mean to mansplain. (Although my mother, grandmother, and aunt keeps nagging me, telling me I look like a member of the Taliban. And we all swear I was singled out at an airport in China because of my beard, given a pat down and had my bags opened scanned 5 times and miss them miss their flight because of the beard.) But I used to shave my face every day and also my legs for sports, and it was a pain. Within hours it would just feel very abrasive like a wire brush and skin would turn red and start peeling off. With legs, I switched to tweezing and an epilator. I know that sounds painful but the trick is to pinch the skin around the hair with one hand while pulling the tweezers with the other. And applying witch hazel afterward which is great for my skin. Pulling out a hair is much easier the coarser and thicker the hair is.

    First-time viewer view here. Was searching for shaving. Landed here. Great video and a very thorough, meticulous analysis. Fun too! As a guy who has been shaving for a while, I agree that the double-edged blade and safety razor outperform any cartridge set-up. Plus, I can use a fresh blade every single day for a lower cost than if I use a cartridge (assuming it lasts for a full month). Basically, DE is waaay cheaper. For the other, shall we say, regions, guess what - I use a woman's razor for the reasons you discovered - doesn't cut too close and has a better ergonomic design. A nick on the chin is not bad, but a nick elsewhere is really bad!
    P.S. I find it so cute when women pronounce something cute. Just a tiny thrill, that's all. I hope it's okay to share that.

    A safety razor is nothing to be afraid of. Just be careful when putting in a new blade. ALWAYS hold the handle at an angle, having the head paralel to the skin will not shave well. If you want a recommendation for trying a safety razor. Amazon with a merkur 23c for a handle its a good moderate shave and get a test pack of double edge blades. Go really slow if you feel it snagging/tugging your hair or cutting your skin stop and change to a different blade. There is a lot of different blade companies. Like anything it is finding what works for you. That being said once you get used to it figure out the angle to hold it at.

    Im confused. Under the microscope theres only like 1-2 hairs and they arent near eachother at all and the rest is skin... if there was regrowth wouldnt there be a ton of tiny little black hairs? Could the long black hairs we are seeing under the microscope be ones that got missed during the shave? Or am I looking at this wrong?

    Hey, Michelle. I've seen you before in BuzzFeed Multiplayer and I've just come across your channel. Allow me to say how talented, brave, enthusiastic, energetic, strong, and extremely powerful you are. No matter what obstacle you come across, I truly admire how you always overcome,
    them, and do them perfectly, no matter what.
