- Matt Robertson is one of the most polarizing pro anglers in professional fishing. He is a 4-time Bassmaster Classic Qualifier and a Bassmaster Open Champion. In a very short time he has built a legion of loyal fans. Known for his signature ON ‘EM hat, his cut-off shirts, fur coats and ferocious personality. Matt proudly represents Kentucky and the trailer park he calls home. His down home thinking and don’t-give-a-crap attitude has taken the fishing world by storm. Along the way he has ruffled some feathers but ultimately Matt just wants to catch fish and have a good time .

One thing that wasn’t mentioned was the time that Matt takes to talk to his fans. It doesn’t matter if you see him at a gas station, or the elites, he’s humble and appreciative and takes time. He’s just a real guy like all of us. He’s great with kids and everything. Mad props to Matt from this fellow KY boy. We’re so proud to see him succeed. I live in the area so I have known of Matt for a long long time. It’s always interesting when he rolls into a tournament. The game gets elevated.

Bass did not air it. It was only ever on the internet. Unfortunately Matt lost out on hours of TV time for himself and his sponsors. But I think he kinda admits that …kinda 😂

Great show as always Dave! We were right behind Matt in the weigh-in line last year at the Jet-A-Marina tournament on KY Lake. He didn't have a good bag that tournament but it didn't seem to bother him one bit. He seemed to just be happy to see a couple of fans. Carried a short conversation with us that ended with him expressing how appreciative he was of us being his fans. Definitely a real down to earth person.

I’ve never listened to a podcast in my life and doubt I ever will again. But thanks for letting me watch this one. I enjoyed hearing the conversation and really enjoy hearing Matt. I’m thankful for that guy putting a little life in BASS. I love fishing for bass, but Matt is just a guy that gets me motivated to watch tournaments. Love Matt. We fished a HS derby last spring out of Kutawa on Barkley and when we were loading up to leave, he was sitting in the parking lot, no boat, just pulled in checking conditions. I pulled up and he rolled the window down and started asking if we caught em; how big, etc like a normal dude. I think some pros get hung up on being everything to everybody it gets in the way. I 100% understand serving the sponsors, but I guarantee in those corporate offices work/life balance is a topic of discussion, but I bet it rarely bleeds over into the workhorses of their marketing strategy.

Awesome, excellent podcast! I have thought he is a good dude from the beginning! He has made choices I wouldn't have but I have never been offended! Too many people are offended about every little thing. That's the one good thing about social media, he can be who he wants to be and with his social media following it forces the "corporate world sponsors" not able to "penalize" him as they would of before. I think it is good for the sport. All fisherman I know are more on the "unprofessional" lane not acting like they are pro golfers with all the etiquette.

Great interview Dave! Matt is as tall as it gets and i hope he never conforms. BASS should give him a raise, not fine him. Every sport has heels, and Matt and Ike are the main two in fishing. Love them or hate them, they are engaging. Any press is good press!
I love Matt, He is a good friend and brings great excitement to the sport. I also love heels, I actually talk about that in this episode. However every pro sport has a code of conduct and I don’t know any that allow grown men to take there pants off while competing.😂

He shows a real side of the sport! Not the sponsor driven “professional athlete”, I think it gets worse every day how this sport gets infected with big money sponsorship and the snub your nose people! At the end of the day in this sport, win or lose, you are going to be sweaty and smell like fish! For the most part this sport is full of guys that work a full time job busting their ass for their families, but on the weekends they fish and they are damn good stick! That is what makes Matt great, he is someone that the average guy that adores this sport can relate too! I pull for Matt every damn tournament!! Keep it up Matt! And great stuff Dave as always!!

I live near Flippin, AR on Bull Shoals. Dave, I must say, I would entertain having Zona, Matt, and you (at the same time) over to share cocktails and a lot of laughs. It would be a bucket list moment, as well, to fish and talk crap with Matt in my boat. After fishing red man back in the day and catching one of my biggest tournament bass while taking a leak off the front of my boat (without a camera), I was not shocked seeing Matt fishing in his whitey tighties. Honestly what I’m most interested in with this guy is his approach to equipment. What line/tackle/lures, etc does he have the low key attitude about, and what is he really picky about? Because everyone else seems a lot more specific - and high dollar- than him! And new people get messed up with this.

Hey Will, I do believe in being real and being yourself. Trust me I love Matt. He is one of my favourite anglers. I just wish he was a little more focused on fishing that day and maybe that 2nd place would have turned into a win. Which trust me everyone would remember. Dave another great interview. I seen a older guy walking a beach in Florida with a speedo walking back & forth. His speedo was on backwards. Also I really don't understand football for where I went to school they didn't have . However I believe the Chiefs will win the Super Bowl 🏈
