I love the fact that whenever a Guthrie song comes on, seems like both the left and the right claim them as their own. Funny thing, Guthrie wanted what most people want. A good job, to stop corporations from mistreating their employees, the right to organize (in a time that really needed that right), for politicians to be honest, and churches to stop selling religion as a commodity. Funny thing is, that's pretty much what we all want. To be free, to be happy, and to raise our children in freedom in a time without violence. Some of my favorite verses from 'This Land is Your Land' are never played and yet they're some of the most honest verses ever sung about this country. Seems if we could just take off the team jerseys, we'd all get along a lot better. Peace be with er'ybody and Mr. Hicks, that was a fine rendition of one my favorite songs. I wonder, if you had to write something on that banjo, would it be more in line with what was on Seeger's banjo or Guthrie's guitar?

The 2 sides have very little in common with each other. The differences are vast and fundamental. It's stupid to try to reduce the conflict down a matter of colors and fonts and labels and packaging. You might get a lot of Thumbs Up on TH-cam with this kind of rhetoric. But it doesn't characterize the Schism in any accurate or useful way

But men and women who took up arms to fight fascist regimes, with the idea of building democracy for the workers. Because communism is not bound to become the soviet union. There are many communist proposals of democracy. But with limits on how the very rich can become richer than the whole country while people starve and work to death. This kind of vision brought many social democracies, less radical but still, better than nothing. I know the US has banned all kinds of leftist ideas for the last century from their schools, unless it were to talk about how "evil communism is", but honestly even the evilest communist saved humanity from a much worse evil, nazism. Without the soviets, the US would've faced a twice as big nazi army. Still, the soviet union is as far from my ideals as capitalism itself. It is very useful for the powerful and rich to convince its people that any idea of worker's rights is evil. Convince a worker to oppress his own ideas of rights, and you'll have your work cut out for you when you need to control them.
I was recently held for 45 days in the Wayne County Jail, in Jesup GA awaiting a bond hearing over a weed charge. During my elongated stay there, I witnessed too many rights violations and disgraces for our system. In response, I taught another inmate the lyrics to this song (his favorite lines were, “They say America first, but they mean America next.). And we’d sing this every time the guards came in for headcount and such. The cherry on top, was that after two weeks of this, (combined with a few other tactics) they finally started letting us go out to yard once a day. A minor victory compared to the other things going on in the time, but a victory none the less. We were all basking in vitamin D, in part due to the chilling message this song sent to our jailers. Thanks Clifton for putting this song in my repertoire and contributing to that moment.

Woodrow Wilson Guthrie was born in Okemah Oklahoma in the year of 19 and 12 and was named after our WW1 president Woodrow Wilson way I heard it. Woody was for the working man and those that might be down on their luck or having a bit of hard travelin`. In the past month or two alone, I have witnessed one side scream that the other is evil while they have simultaneously advocated for the ability to kill a child as late as 7 days outside the womb. Days later they scream you're a heartless murderer if you refused to surrender your ability to protect yourself with a gun. A few more days go by and they're openly sexually abusing children in strip clubs. Last night one of them said "Why do we restrict child porn but not guns?" That's Neil Steinberg, with the Chicago Sun-Times, go ahead, look it up and just digest that for a moment. They want you defenseless, broke, oppressed, and eventually dead. They want to rape and abuse your children and they think it's hilarious. But you're the fascist if you oppose them.
At this point, I don't care anymore. I would vote for Hitler 2.0 if it would make this shit stop. You can call me a racist, bigoted fascist. I know the truth about the racist, fascist history of gun control and progressivism. I know that God is on my side and I will stand in the sun with the truth upon my shoulders. I would gladly lay down my life and sacrifice everything if it means my children and my people's way of life is secured. Life, Liberty, and Equality for all, by any means necessary.

The music developed from there with influences of Scottish and other settlers in the Appalachian mountains for example. But the concept of the banjo is African. Google minstrel shows.

Woodrow Wilson Guthrie was born in Okemah Oklahoma in the year of 19 and 12 and was named after our WW1 president Woodrow Wilson way I heard it. Woody was for the working man and those that might be down on their luck or having a bit of hard travelin`. He did join the communist party briefly, but did not pursue cause he was an artist with a free spirit.
But then the USSR wasn't communist either, just a bunch of tyrans who hijacked Engels and Marx's work to run a dictatorship.
Guthrie definitely was on the left side of the political spectrum, fighting for social rights and against exploitants/big landlords.
