I bought a Hardy Ames Saville Row Tweed jacket for the equivalent of $10 that fits perfectly, except the shoulder pads were way too big, once removed the shoulders hung over my shoulder by about an inch and a half, followed this method exactly, now I feel like the jacket was tailored just for me. Awesome video.
I think its fantastic that a young man like you does tailoring as a profession. With the exception of large fashion houses like Christian Dior, I thought tailors were a thing of the past. With regards to this quick video tutorial, I really appreciate it. I have two classic silk blouses from the 80's which I love except for the shoulders and I hesitate to remove the pads for fear of a droopy look . Thanks to you, I can now approach this issue with confidence, fix it, and make these blouses part of my wardrobe. :0)
Oh my gawd. Thank you. I’ve been searching high and low trying to figure out how to do shoulder alterations. As a petite female I have to have everything altered. I can do basic alterations but more complicated alterations involving blazers or jackets are harder for me.
Holy moly I can't believe I just found your channel, I've been struggling with these kinds of alterations for a few weeks and this has been a godsend for my small brain. Clear, helpful and enjoyable - Awesome work man!
Thank you for this! I thought this should be possible but all the tutorials I saw involved taking the jacket apart and like you I thrifted the jacket and did not want to go to that much trouble! 😊
YO!!! This is awesome!!! I thrift the majority of my jackets and this will help me dial in a few!! Especially because a lot of the ones I find have that kind of dated shoulder pad look.
Thanks for sharing! I was t old that this couldn't be done by the seamstress I used for my suit jackets as I am still working on getting up the nerve to tackle this myself.
Life safer. I found this thrifted pthalo green trench coat and even though it was slightly big, I couldnt let it go and it came home with me ❤️ super excited to make this coat a staple in my business-major wardrobe
Omg thank you. You saved my partner's wedding suit. The tailor just put in these gigantic, diaper-looking shoulder pads that were way too big for his frame. Kinda mad we paid for that, but it's fixed now!
Great advise. I have a jacket with the same problem , It fits perfectly otherwise. I will try myself. I see the more in depth channel is coming. Keep it up. You are a true artist.
Man I wish this young man lived close to me! The last tailor in town closed shop and retired ( older gentlemen). Tailors are close to non existent around where I live.
Really great video thanks! Have a couple of jackets I need to do this with. Would very much like to see the longer video/other parts. Good stuff keep it coming
Dang bud, you make it look too easy! Got a thrift jacket last week. Sleeves fit funky so I am gonna try playing with it a little and starting with taking out the shoulder pads. Jacket may not work out in the end cuz I think the arm holes are just too big from factory. Jacket pulls pretty hard when I move my arms forward or up. Thank you for posting these tutorials!
Louis, I've watched and rewatched this video. Thank you! I'm a decent amateur and have tailored lots of shirts and pants. Do you think an amateur can do this at home with a decent machine? Looks scary, but i lost weight and nothing fits!
thanks. This is how they show it all over YT and looks ok for half an inch. But I think this method makes any jacket look cheap and badly tailored once you want an inch or more off each side. I was looking for a "real tailors" way of shortening shoulders, not just taking off the sleeves and cutting the armholes (which just pulls up the sleeves in an awkward way ) but where somehow the collar seams are opened as well, I believe - so that the sleeves , front and back will fall nicely after reducing fabric like they did before... I would love to see a good vid on that :)
When you cut material off the shoulder it causes the armhole opening to be too large. So the sleeve needs a little adjustment too. The sleeve should be taken out of the jacket body to acomplish that.
Gotta try this out. I have a ton of sport coats from thrifting that I simply don't like the fit of. I'm a bigger guy (fat not strong) so the coats that actually fit me tend to be bigger In every way. They look more like they're from the 80s with large gorges, heavily padded shoulders, and extra long sleeves.
I'd like to see a more traditional method for shortening (raising) the shoulder of a man's jacket. I have volunteered as a "tailor" for my local theater company and they're asking me to reit men's suits. I've sewn a lot but this type of work is new and challenging to me. THanks.
Yes it will change the sleeve length. But if you want to do it without shorting the sleeves you just remove the sleeve cap and attach it higher up on the shoulder.
Mine did indeed open the shoulder seam when I took out the pad which was annoying- it had been sewn in. Now I have the annoying task of putting the shoulders back together. It should work, but it's annoying. Wish I'd found this before I started.
Outstanding video! Hey, great hair !!!! Question? While home in southern California in the pandemic, i have been attempting to make various pieces of clothing for my little nieces Barbies. I successfully created trousers out of a pair of Ralph Lauren dress socks and what I'm trying to do as per my little nieces is a blazer. Would you consider clothes for toys? Lol I can't believe that I am even doing this or that I am researching tricks or hints on doing this.
I recently bought a coat that I love but it's loose in the shoulder and the arm is a bit long, otherwise it fits and looks fine. Your technique here looks like it would work but I have no skill and the coat was a bit pricey for me to go ripping arms off. Fortunately, I have about two weeks left for a return, so maybe I can find someone who can do it properly. Can you suggest any national Dept Stores or such that do these kind of alterations?
@@AspiringGent Thanks, I didn't know where to start looking and after reading about mixed results I went for it since I had some boots to return there anyway. Although I didn't buy it there, I took it to Nordstrom. The guy who I met there seemed very confident with thirty-three years of experience. I told him there was no rush but it's been about a week now. ..::fingers crossed::.
Thanks alot! what if i want it to be a shirt shoulder, what do i do? i would be very pelased if someone answered i have this very nice jacket but don't know how to fix it :):)
I don't really understand what part of the shoulder or sleeve he sewed into in order to remove the bulk. It wasn't really clear visually what part of the jacket he was working on
@@AspiringGent Starting at 1:53, my brain just can't visualise in a 3D sense what is being sewn to what in order to remove the bump at the shoulder seam. Perhaps do a diagram or trace your finger along where you're going to sew while still wearing the jacket to indicate more clearly. Don't get me wrong, great video, fantastic presentation and content, it was just that one small thing I didn't get because I'm fairly new to sewing.
Okay I have the problem where the sleeve is longer than I want as well, what did you do to shorten the sleeve as well as fix the indentation from removing the shoulder pads and does the technique shorten the shoulder width of the jacket?
What to do if the customer wants a whole inch and a half off all the way around the sleeve so it shortens the length of the sleeve and decreases the sleeve size?
Love this. This freaks me out though. I have a tweed jacket with substantial shoulder pads I'd love to try this on. Is this a common job for an alteration tailor?
@@RocLobo358 hey I actually did this by hand after leaving the comment. It worked really well. Nowhere near tailor quality but it was thrifted and a great learning experience
I have a jacket that the shoulder seam is to long the sleeves are ok but I need to shorten the shoulder seam but have fullness in sleeves what is the best way to fix the his
I'm fine with your easy method, it's not going to show anyway. Just thrifted this fabulous camel double breasted full length coat! I'll be doing the same for the sides. Thank you!
Would it be safe to say that this would still work even if I decide not to close the inner lining if I want to remove the lining altogether? (It's really hot in my country so I can't wear thrifted outerwear with linings without burning up @__@ )
I'd like to add a step. I think it is important to always use a press cloth when pressing a garment like this. Otherwise I agree with your instructions.
You just saved me from re-thrifting an amazing men’s blazer! I already spent money to have some tailor work done, but it still wasn’t quite right

I really like the way you reduced the shoulder in such a quick efficient way. Thank you for sharing!
love that jacket and shirt combo by the way. Patterned brown and medium dark blue is just great
Ty for the video, that Grey suit jacket looks great on you after you altered it.
What a great video! I bought this gorgeous cashmere jacket but the shoulder pads are huge’ now I know EXACTLY how to fix it!!thank you !!

Hi, great video!
I have the same problem with my new leather jacket. The shoulders are a bit bulky and it doesn't look natural. How do I fix that?
Eat job is different because each garment it put together different. I would look for a tailor if you have leather you're working with!
Will doing this shorten the sleeves of The jacket?
Yes it will change the sleeve length. But if you want to do it without shorting the sleeves you just remove the sleeve cap and attach it higher up on the shoulder.
Subbed - great content!
Awesome, it was quick. I would alter my blazer instead of putting it on market place for sale
How do you finish the invisible stitch without it showing? Learning through your videos to tailor a blazer for a wedding!
its all about grabbing a little fabric as possible.
Won’t this end up with front of the cuff being lifted up at an angle compared to the under cuff?
