Thank goodness I watched this before ripping into my jacket. Some of my instincts were OK, but this saved me a ton of errors. The biggest tip is after the jacket is entirely pinned, do the seam ripping and basting on one side and then model the other one on that. I couldn't believe how much better the jacket fit, once the shoulder was in the right place, it was almost like it was made for me. The sleeve fix is super useful too, as that was the other big issue with the jacket. THANK you sir. Well, done.
It's great to see a whole project like this to see all the things that are possible to adjust on one piece of clothing! It gives me the motivation and assurance to try on such a similar oversized project for myself. Your previous indepth videos are great aswell, I learned a lot from them, but this helps out even more to get the whole picture.
Great vid! As an experienced seamer I appreciate the sped up version. Thank you! You covered a lot in one video and it was exactly what I was looking for. Best one on TH-cam I have found so far.
thank GOD. I have been looking for this sort of video for days. this is so helpful since i ended up basically altering/ making clothes for my brothers :D (which I love doing btw) especially now during a pandemic.
Thank you so much for this video. I bought a beautiful 1975 wine colored Kashmir suit jacket for my husband and it’s a little bit too big and a little bit too long and I was wondering what to do. Very helpful.
You are very talented. I looked up info to see if a sport coat could be made smaller and your video popped up. This answers my question. You did a great job with that coat. I guess there is hope for my coat. Jeff
Appreciate this video and all the others. Found some beautiful %100 wool, 3 peice suits from the 90s and have been working on a little more of a classic fit. You've been a big help.
What a great video- the jacket needed so much work!! But it’s a beautiful jacket, very classic and looks gorgeous on you! I bought a 100% camel hair blazer - size 52!! It needs 2 1/2" off each shoulder, sleeves too big & too long….. I get so disgusted with it, throw it in a plastic bag to get rid of it for a while so I don’t have to look at it. It’s almost like remaking the whole thing. I can tell you there isn’t a tailor where I live who will touch any shoulder work!! So frustrating!! I love all your videos - you are amazing and very informative! Thank you so much! 💗💗
Thank you for uploading this tutorial. Been looking for weeks now of vids on the whole process of resizing a jacket. Thrifted a double breasted suit over a month ago for me to wear for my bestfriends wedding next month. I really don't want to spend on a new suit because I'm currently jobless because of the pandemic. As self taught in sewing ( pretty good at it too...hehe ), I do have aready an idea on my head in doing it but I'm scared I might mess it up especially in the armscye area.
Glad you found this helpful. Double breasted is a little easier to take in but if you’re in need of tailored help for your jacket feel free to shoot me a text.
What a great video. I'm so surprised that taking the armhole forward doesn't constrict movement. I have some jackets and dresses that are too big in the same area and I never would have thought to move the sleeves forward. Thanks for coving all the basics of full-bodice alterations!
Great stuff. I saw a fantastic must have jacket in my local thrift store but it is far too big in the chest. I will now go get it and see what I can do with it.
Amazing fit. Thanks for this video. I learnt a couple of things there like running stitch after every alterations and machine loose stitch on the shoulder lining. It does make sense. 👍👍👍
Hi Louis, thank you for this tailoring video! Super advice, explanations, and guidance. I have been a home sewer since a teen, just to make things fit better, and I coped well with your pared down video with main goals highlighted, some detail, and tips from a pro. Ow I have two horse riding jackets, bought second hand but a size too large for me, to tailor down, and am going to give it a go after being inspired by your tutorial, thank you…
Helpful overview. I am about to practice on a Goodwill jacket I purchased before I work on the important jacket, so this video was helpful. Discussing some of the typical ways that suits don't fit and how that can be fixed would be helpful. For example, your suit was too large overall, but what about when the suit bunches horizontally just below the neck, or when the lapels don't sit flat on the chest but kind of bow outward. Identifying these issues and pointing out how to fix them as the suit is modified would be helpful. Thank for your work! One other minor point: the details of Blue and black suits are difficult to see on video. They kind of waste your hard work for us. Still, I appreciate what you have done.
Very helpful! Many of my husband's suits are too big. I can easily tailor the pants without difficulty, but intimidated to touch the jackets and mess with the lining. Now that I know what it involves, I have to decide if it is worth the time and effort. TFS
Thank God I saw this video before taking apart the whole jacket and figure out what to do next. (Though I’ve started unpicking some bits but I’ll stitch them right back as if a fresh new start 👏😂) Thank you!!
Thank you 🙏 for the tutorials. The only thing I missed, how did you manage to reduce the armholes. I would appreciate if you could help me get this fixed. Thanks
Great work, but a little disappointed that you didn't lift your arms sideways to show the armhole length after the alteration. I wonder how much shortening was done there. Is it as fitting as a bespoke measurement or is it still slightly larger?
Thanks, I did this to my sons prom jacket. I noticed he had a little roll at the top near the neck. It looks like you have a little of that on yours too. How would that be fixed if you wanted to remove it? I was afraid of unseeing anything near the collar.
Hello, I am the same size as you. I wear a 40R. I have a 42S that I want to size down just like you did in this video. Is this something any tailor is able to do? And would this be considered standard practice for sizing down a suit jacket? I just want to get a great result like you were able to do here.
Thanks for the tutorial, I'm a fashion designer seamstress and tailor. But I'm learning how to alter sleeves, do a mitered edge by watching you. And you are awesome. Thanks now I'm going to perform the same tasks. I have an interview tomorrow at Nordstrom for a Seamstress position. I have to do a mitered edges of the blazer, take in the waistband and hem a pair of pants So thanks🪡
Is it possible to shorten the length of a 42R to a 40S-I know exact measurements vary by brand but in general one size down but also hem the length to be shorter?
As a woman whose job requires a suit (and is a novice seamstress), women's suits are awful. The least practical thing there could be is a fake pocket. A pen doesn't fit in there. I bought men's suits and had them fitted. The problem is the curve in the waist. They're pretty good but i don't think that the gentleman who tailored for me understood what I meant and they could be better. I bought another recently and wanted to make an attempt myself. After watching your video, I feel very confident! Thank you for this tutorial ❤ Here it goes... 🤞
Awesome video! Just a question about taking in the back vents, do you cut off the extra fabric through the actual vent and re-sew the lining at the vent or do you just fold, press and re-distribute the excess?
Serious question I have a vintage sport coat that has a special meaning to me. It’s a size 46R. Can it be totally reconstructed to a size 40 Short? Thanks
I need to slim down pretty much all of my jackets that were supposedly my size. I hate the lazy "boyfriend" cut. The sleeve heads are way off of my shoulders. The length of the shoulders are also too long
Suit sleeves require a lot of time to put together. Time consuming process = more $$$. Personally I don't like messing with them. Not only they take time and also they never look the same after alteration. Suit sleeves was designed and cut to fit some specific arms. For most of suits, adjusting, shortening and tapering not worth it. While we can buy a 3 pieces modern fit suit for around $50 on sale... So, depending of the brand and value of the suit I prefer selling them and buying another modern fit suits. 🎀✂️👔🧥👋👋👏🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 Personal experience as a tailor Designer..
Do you realize the cost of these alterations by a competent tailor? Unless it is a very $$$ bespoke jacket which should have fit perfectly when new this is the dumbest thing you could do because it will cost a fortune and totally destroy the balance of the garment.
I don’t think he destroyed the balance of the jacket! I think he did a beautiful job and it looks gorgeous on him! He probably couldn’t resist the sale price and I would have bought it also!
@@AspiringGent Sure ...do it yourself if you are a trained tailor or seamstress with the necessary sewing skills and equipment. Are you seriously suggesting an amateur without the above prerequisites could do this work? That's just nonsense.
It depends on the material and the chalk you use. I am using a wax chalk that turns clean when heat is applied. It doesn’t disappear just becomes transparent. So with a fabric like velvet sometimes that wax stays in the fabric because it has texture.

This channel is all about helping make alterations easier! So I'm glad it helped let me know if there is anything else I can do!
Fit perfect. Never thought about taking in the front darts, but as someone that has broader shoulders and more narrow waist this is very helpful 👍
Normally I don’t recommend it as a first resort but when taking in as much as I needed to it becomes necessary.
best tailoring video and channel on TH-cam right now, love this and i think the eclectic content like this is good and something no one else is doing.
I agree!

Love the jacket! Now you have a cigar jacket
That's true!
Thank you 🙏 for the tutorials.
The only thing I missed, how did you manage to reduce the armholes. I would appreciate if you could help me get this fixed.
Thanks
He didn't reduce the armholes. He just tapered into the armhole.
this video was so great. that jacket looks awes on you.
Awesome video Louis. Learned a lot.
Great Tutorial on reducing a Jacket. Thank You…
Great work, but a little disappointed that you didn't lift your arms sideways to show the armhole length after the alteration. I wonder how much shortening was done there. Is it as fitting as a bespoke measurement or is it still slightly larger?
Nice...Question : Resize a 46 R jacket to 38 , resize the arm pit hole, shorten the jacket and open 2 vents....will it be mission impossible? Thx
Thanks, I did this to my sons prom jacket. I noticed he had a little roll at the top near the neck. It looks like you have a little of that on yours too. How would that be fixed if you wanted to remove it? I was afraid of unseeing anything near the collar.
Do you put up a class where one can learn drafting and sewing of suit ? I will love to learn.
Random question: how does you hair look so good? What hair products do you use?
HI, I might have missed something but I am confused how you took in the centre back seam without changing the width of the collar it connects to?
Thanks for this video. Just one question. What about fixing the length between the chest pocket and the top of the shoulder? If this is too long.
since you cut the shoulder area, why don't you shorten the sleeves from the shoulder? with that you don't have to remove the button s.
OMG i love your Work ....i love also the Style of your Trousers!!!!! I want to lern it ....greets from Vienna
Can you add a video on how to MAKE a LINED SUIT, UNLINED? or Undo /remove the non breathing POLYESTER lining that traps heat?
Could you how to shorten jacket sleeves from shoulder thank you
It‘s the same for full, half and glued canvas jackets? Great video btw!! Not a tailor but still extremely interesting!
Yes virtually the same process. For a few suit it might be a little bit harder to do the front darts but otherwise it’s the same.

Best of luck with the job! I’m glad you found my videos helpful! Let me know if you need anything else.
I'm a 36 R and find it almost impossible to find jackets or suits in my size
Thanks for the tutorial
Did you handsew everything no machine?
Can you do adding an inner pocket to a jacket?
How long have you been doing this and at what point did you feel confident enough to do it on suits you really like?
Is it possible to shorten the length of a 42R to a 40S-I know exact measurements vary by brand but in general one size down but also hem the length to be shorter?
Are you sewing through the fabric and lining at the same time?
What part?
How did you stitched the lower lining where's the vent?
I have a very big suit but don't know how to alter it
As a woman whose job requires a suit (and is a novice seamstress), women's suits are awful. The least practical thing there could be is a fake pocket. A pen doesn't fit in there.

Here it goes...
🤞
Can you add pictures of you wearing your tailored mens jacket?
Where are you? I would love to come visit your shop. I already feel like you are my instructor.
Excellent video keep up the good work!
It would be nice if you could do a demo with a light-colored jacket, and show us how to resize the length..?
Awesome video!
Just a question about taking in the back vents, do you cut off the extra fabric through the actual vent and re-sew the lining at the vent or do you just fold, press and re-distribute the excess?
I just fold and press unless you are taking in more then 3.5 inches then it must be re-cut.
I bought a sports jacket it was a size too big. It is a 44 long, when I should be wearing a 42 regular. Can I Salvage it?
This video was AWESOME, thank you! If you ever do a full detailed version, I think it would be very well received.
This was so awesome
Can you do a video about garment ease?
Good work, i need to.do.that with a leather Jacket
It would have been easier to see what you are doing if it were not a navy blue fabric.
Can you repeat with a light grey?
Serious question
I have a vintage sport coat that has a special meaning to me. It’s a size 46R. Can it be totally reconstructed to a size 40 Short? Thanks
Not easily and it most likely won’t look right even if it gets done. Are you planning to take this on yourself or take it to someone?
Does this procedure apply to a double breasted jacket? Are there any other things to be aware?
Interesting. I’ve always heard that the shoulders cannot be adjusted and you seem to make it work
Ok, so you take it up under the arms?
Most arm work needs to be fixed on the pattern
How long have you been doing this u are a natural
7 years!
Great video! After watching the video I want to go thrift shopping and just buy oversized jackets 😂😂
I think the big tie makes you look small. Love your videos
Good job
where are you located
Oh man, how come you are not working at savile row.
I know right! Lol honestly I’m trying put my city in the map so other ask why they aren’t working here 👍🏻
I have a jacket I’m getting ready to do
My armole cutting so bad .help me❤
Fix great
thx
I was hoping this video to be in-depth. Thanks anyways
Is there a spot you're needing more help in?
