I like that; "It's non-negotiable." Only leave the stitching that you want! 😂😂❤❤
I’m super broke but I have a job interview. I thrifted an amazing blazer for it but it’s a little big. You just made it so I can show up looking like the incredible candidate I am, not some fraud playing dress ups in someone else’s suit! Thank you!!!
I got a cup of coffee, being all cozy, and as an amateur tailor I’m very fascinated.
I don't sew. But I just come here to relax.
Same here.....I just woke up.
Thoroughly enjoyed this tutorial......more like a surgical procedure 😃👍
I have a renewed respect for Tailors and seamstresses.
You are absolutely extraordinary, your sewing skills and your teaching skills too! Thank you!!!
hi, I'm just starting to pick up tailoring my own clothes, more just out of interest and I like learning new skills. You really are good at teaching. Thanks again.
AMEN! She is a fantastic teacher!
You are the Bob Ross of tailoring.
Lady I thank you for putting the time and effort to teach us how to handle shoulders on Suitjackets. God bless you.
You have given me the confidence to try this! You are excellent at explaining steps, for being reassuring, and just plain being ridiculously charming. Thank you.
I have grandma's blazer and I really want to wear it, but it's big on my shoulders. Tailor's price was too much...I could just buy a new jacket. Soo I will do it alone. Fingers crossed for me.
You're quite a good seamstress. In order to be able to do that alteration one has to be experienced. Thank you very much !!!
How much do I charge the customer for all this work??? I really and truly didn't know what I was getting myself into, the day I took on this job!! ❤❤❤ WOW! ❤❤❤
You’re such a great teacher! 🧵🪡
i prefer the Un-popular option, i.e. to take in a part of the sleeve. It fixes a big issue of "squareish" shoulders that when you Lift your arm, retain their rigid square-ness . . . while the actual shape of your shoulder as a human . . . is a slope/curve. 😍🤩
Best video on the subject I’ve seen so far . Perfect . So clear and well explained. Thank you 🙏
I used this tutorial. It worked perfectly. Cheers
What type of needle and thread did you use? I'm struggling with missed stiches....AP needle, polyester thread. Otherwise, it's on target...Thanks!
@@gary1739 90/14 needle and a poly thread
@gary1739 I hate missing stitches. There might be something wrong with the needle position or tension. I usually fiddle around with everything when my machine starts missing stitches. So, clearly I haven't gotten it down to a science yet. Also, check the feed dog.
@@gary1739 90/14 needle and poly thread
@@TheSteelKnottthanks much. I'll try the tension. I had it set to long stitches also...any thoughts on that?
You are truly Amazing! These tutorials are THE BEST I’ve ever seen and truly inspiring! CHEERS! 💕💕
Great information. Haven’t tried it yet but I want to refashion a men’s suit coat to fit me. They are cheap in thrift stores and can be found in gorgeous fabrics like cashmere, wool and linen.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! A friend asked me to take in a coat for her. I have been sewing most of my life, but have never done this and I was panicking a bit about dealing with the shoulders. Now I’m feeling more confident that I can do it. Thank you!!
Hi thank you, love this video scary as it may be, lol. Could you please do a before and after fit with the customer for this adjustment some time? And could Garrison put the camera at the back of the sewing machine so we can see the sewing coming from the machine? I know I'm asking for a lot but that would be so very helpful. Love you guys thanks for all you do......
Was unable to comment on a previous video. I just want say the pants crotch adjustment tutorial is the best and most useful I’ve ever seen ! I’m so grateful for that and I wanted to thank you very much. Newly subscribed!😘
I liked it and used to have 36 tailors working for me in NYC.
Thank you for this video! Extremely helpful!
Love the star trek insignia and the lcars on the watch! Video was brilliant too 🖖🏼
Thanks so much for putting all these suit alterations together. I've worked my way through the whole closet over the last two years as I've gotten better with sewing and how clothes are constructed, and even done dress alterations for my wife. But suits alterations always seemed like I was missing a couple big "don't do this or else"'s that would ruin the suit. I think I was right! I've got more reassurance to try my own now with your help.
Very good video. Good lighting,Well explained. .thank you. Jose from Australia
Thank you for your very clear information on how to do this very difficult technique. I will remember not to trim the head of the actual sleeve if I have to alter a jacket shoulder. 😃You are very clever seamstress.
Fantastic tutorial! Thanks for all those great details, especially on shaping. Love it!
You are soooo awesome! I love how exciting you made it seem to do. I'm pumped to try.
🎉Thank you so much for this simple method of altering the shoulder width of a mens Jacket. I am female and bought an expensive mans jacket because I love the style but the shoulders a 1/2” too wide, now I am confident in making the alterations without removing the whole sleeve after watching your tutorial, Thank you. xx
Thank you for this! Your videos are great - so clear and helpful!
You're excellent, my Dear !!! ❤
I'm so glad to see this video! Ive been hoping for it! Thank you for another great tutorial ❤
Thank you 🙏🏻
Love your videos 👌
Hi,I have been watching your alteration video's and I have learned a lot. I have been doing alterations for 50 years, and now I'm not afraid to tackle this. I mostly do bridal and make bags and purses.
You’re very sweet! Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Sue, guy who's learned to tailor his clothing reaching out! I've watched and rewatched this video, and dove in on a thrifted practice coat! Your tips were fantastic and soooooo helpful. Thank you for being here! Sewing through multiple layers, I had a lot of missed stiches. (using a new all purpose needle and regular polyester thread). Alot. What type of needle and thread should i use for the main reattachment? Also, is there a basting thread you recommend? I love your style of teaching and look forward to learning more from you! To anyone else reading this, study the video closely, the tips were spot on and this is home tailor do-able!! Get a thrifted coat and practice!
Thank you! I am going to tackle a beautiful mens blazer that fits everywhere except the shoulders! Here I go.
I opened the shoulder up and all the padding and stiffening are attached to the shoulder and not the sleeve. Do I just line up the sleeve to fit and sew new seam and cut off excess padding? There is a stiff mesh that is basted to the padding. I think I will reset that so it comes down into the sleeve like it originally did. I am going to keep going. It is a thrifted, but nice jacket, so a perfect learning experience. Thank you for inspiring me to get back into sewing.
I’m also pretty deep in a jacket shoulder project right now. The first shoulder was a learning experience and I’m happy with the results. I sewed the outer material together first then pinned all the padding down where it was meant to go and threw another straight stitch over the whole thing. I think it’s more forgiving than I originally feared. Hope your project is going well.
So much great info. Thank you
Thank you baby Jesus for this vid! Bless you Shae
Yes! I've been hoping you'd do one of these! I've been too intimidated to attempt a shoulder alteration for a while, but I always know I'll be able to follow your amazingly clear videos. Can't wait to try this on my blazers this weekend!
Even I put this one off for a bit because it was a tricky one to film but I’m glad we finally got it out here!
You’ll regret it😂😂😂😂😂😂
How much you would charge for this alteration? Great video😊
Excellent!
I really enjoy your videos and teaching style. I sew but I know nothing about tailoring. What surprised me about this one is that the shoulder pad was treated as part of the shoulder instead of removing it and putting it back after the alteration. Also, I would think you would sew it with the feed dogs on the sleeve side. I learned so much watching this! Thank you!!
The reason I cut down the shoulder pad is to keep the overall look proportional. I don’t wanna add more bulk closer to the neckline, especially if I’m doing this alteration for a woman who is not looking for added bulk in any area.
@@sewshowwithshae oh! Good point! Thanks so much!
After watching your video for the hundredth time, I still made a mistake, 😮😮 bcuz I lost you somewhere along the area where we did the basting stitches, and did not attach/sew the sleeve onto the body of the jacket, at the same time!!! 😮😮😢😢😢 Damn!! I've restarted the video, umpteen times, trying to retrace my steps, in order to correct the error. And yes. Mine is designed differently on the inside. What a Bummer!!! Shae. I thank you so much for sharing this lesson. It's HARD, but I'm gonna get it down pat! Trial and error, yes?! And, believe it or not, I also have to go shorten the jacket length, and the sleeves, and take in the sides, as the jacket is too big for my customer. Plus, I have another operation to do, that I haven't seen in anyone's video, yours included. That's to create two, 4" slits in the back of the jacket, along the ends of the side 'darts,' I think; that run down either side of the center back seam, coming all the way down to the hem. Jesus Christ! Help me, please, PLEASE!!!! 😢😢😢😢❤ O Lord, have mercy on ME!!! 😮😮😮
Amazing video
Watched all 58 minutes and promptly called my tailor 😂
I really enjoyed finally putting this video up because it almost encapsulates the whole profession at once; an intriguing and often painstaking puzzle.
😆😆😆😆😆😆same
😂😂😂😂
Thank you so much ❤
Excellent 🤩
What kind of iron are you using and where can we obtain one? Love watching your expertise!

Since only few tailors have the skills for shoulder altering, is it cost effective to even consider this service for an of the rack suit?
what ironing board are you using? also Is there a way to contact you. I was going to do the alterations my self but it looks like it might be worth just sending them your way
I have a shoulder pad question. I'm doing a pretty big adjustment, from 6" to 4" shoulder width. If I trim the the shoulder pad it will be pretty small (about 3 inches), and I'm worried the shoulders may loose some structure. So would it be better to keep some of the shoulder pad width (like maybe only cut off 1"?) and then move it inward before reattaching the sleeve? I hope that makes sense, i realize it may just be something I have to experiment with.
I personally will not go any further than 1 inch in, no matter what the situation. If the suit jacket needs to come in more than 1 inch, there are going to be overall fit issues that will all lead to irreversible problems. The overall goal in this alteration is to make an adjustment on a jacket that is somewhat close to fitting. If this is a jacket for yourself, you are definitely welcome to experiment and pin the sleeve in place before actually sewing so that you can get an idea of how it will change the overall drape. Good luck!!
Hi thank you so much for your videos
Could you please share a video how to shorten a suit jacket collar
Thanks,
Yes, we already have; it’s called How to fix a Collar Roll
Nicely done. Pity we can't see the before/after on the customer though :)
Love your informative Channel and you're cute as well.
What does an alteration like this cost?
Video save me alot of worry
How come you don't a razor for ripping?
What would be the most that you could take up on the shoulders?
I would hesitate to go further than 1 inch on a traditional fit. If you are doing something more fashion forward and didn't mind a harder curve in the shoulder and bigger pitch in the sleeve you can open everything up and position it on a form to decide how far you want to take it!
I was wondering how doable is it to bring in the waist on a tweed jacket? Thankyou
SO doable! I'd start by curving in the back side seams tigher around the waist and then take in from other seams as needed (such as the back). The only thing that will stop you from getting an extremely tight fit is the height of your vents.
@@sewshowwithshae Thankyou very much for the reply, I wish you a merry Christmas.
I don’t see, I’m watching this video in the background. I have paused and looked up seeing classes in my area AND fashion school. 😂
It's best to sew the sleeve to jacket first and than sew the shoulder pads right on the outside of the seam you just made.
How u make it broader???
...you don't. There is never enough fabric left in the shoulder to make it bigger no matter how expensive the jacket is. All excess is trimmed to make the tight curve over the shoulder smooth.
Ooof...shoulder take-ins are the third rail of suit tailoring. I'm actually surprised to see that your shop does them. A lot of alteration folks simply won't - too much time to be cost effective, and far too many opportunities for it to go wrong.
Right you are, it is an admittedly risky process but someone has to do it!
That looks complicated. And scary. I’d rather face a vampire in the dark.
Crazy that she's doing this on some jacket from Express. This tailoring probably cost twice as much as the jacket. I'd have told the guy to throw it in the trash and buy a new one for cheaper.
This is a great call out and brings up a great point; you wouldn’t believe how often we have people bring in clothing for which the alterations cost more than the piece itself. When somebody wants something done, it’s really hard to change their mind and that’s why we’re in business!
Have you heard of sustainability and saving the planet???use what you have. Fix what you have. Respect what you have.
Sorry but you a doing a terrible job, you don't use these clips, you bast it.
Thanks for the view! Feel free to post your own video so we can all learn how it should really be done 🤠!
You don't know what you are doing !!!
I’m not Criticizing you, but I would not be happy with that crease you have on the front of the sleeve. It doesn’t come out, no matter how hard you press. you just have to redo it to get that wrinkle out of the sleeve. That is unacceptable especially on a suit. It makes it look like a cheap jacket from H and M. not good. A detail like that could cost customer a sale.
Sooooooo obnoxiously annoying, but I appreciate the tutorial content, though
I agree she is preachy but how the hell else is she going to teach us idiots how to fix a garment?😂
