While Neon Dynasty is arguably the best draft set we've had in years, it's also one of the most difficult, especially for new players. There's a TON of text in that set, and a bunch of fairly new magic tech that isn't always the most understandable (Vehicles, Sagas, and even Ninjutsu, while old, can be pretty confusing). You did awesome all things considered, and you would've felt much less overwhelmed with sets like Adventure's in the Forgotten Realms, or even Midnight Hunt, but you really jumped into the deep end here.

As someone who's been dipping in and out of magic since 1997, all I can say is you're only doing it wrong if you're not having fun. Turning everything sideways is a valid tactic. The issue you're having is that you're playing with a high complexity set and drafting in general is a skill in itself including knowing the cards and the meta
Just some tips- if you're mana flooded (too many lands), consider holding the land in hand - either for discard value or to bluff your opponent into thinking you have a combat trick.
For drafting, BREAD is the acromyn to start with. In terms of what to chose to pick... bombs, removal, evasion, aggro, duds.

  • @natahliazaring5291
    @natahliazaring5291 ปีที่แล้ว +34

I do think when you are new and learning it's usually worthwhile to play out a match even if you think it's over. Having the sense for when a HS game is over early on doesn't directly translate to having the same sense for MtG for starters, especially since MtG has a LOT of catch-up mechanics and cards compared to HS. But also, even if the game is over, navigating those later turns will still teach you a good amount.
But also, MtG is a game that's not about quick glances to understand cards much in the way HS is...you often really need to read the cards in MtG. In Arena you can right click on a card to bring it up to read it, which I think would make a night and day difference for you in terms of understanding what is going on. They don't expect you to read the cards in the short animation flash when your opponent plays it...that flash is just to tell you which card is being played (and assuming that you are generally familiar with the card).

Just a hint for the future: You kept playing your basic lands, despite already having more than you need. Since you can act on your opponent's turn you can bluff that you might have an Instant spell by keeping the land that you don't need in your hand.

@@claytonnewlon3747 In draft it's correct most of the time to hold one land when topdecking. If you draw a second land, play it out, so when you draw a nonland you can play the land in hand and still have the maximum amount of mana while keeping a card in hand as a bluff or to discard. There are obviously situantions where it's important to have that mana on the board for activated abilities or tax effects/conditional counters by the enemy, but absent those reasons it's usually worth to keep the land in hand.

The thing that separates arena from tabletop is you can't have other players gather around, and try to assist you with the deck you made, at least not easily. I'd have the people I played against help me break a deck down after they beat me, and go through what's good, and what's bad. I recommend posting your list to moxfield, and getting advice from your viewers on what you did right, wrong, and what can be improved on as far as card choices, and how to play them.

Just so you know, the draft format you signed up for (kamigawa neon dynasties) is a pretty advanced one with a lot of intricate synergies. And I’d say you actually picked up on some of them fairly quickly.
One thing to keep in mind is that anything with an ability is instant speed (spell speed 2) and can be done as many times as you can pay the cost per turn, unless it says otherwise.
Also play your creatures after attacking unless you get some benefit from them being on board for that combat (like something with haste). Because having open mana and cards in hand makes your opponent have to think about whether or not you have any instants to play during combat.
Great video though and I’m looking forward to seeing more like it!

I used to be a diehard HS arena player, but I ended up dropping the game after it became more about what you could discover over what you could draft. I switched over to Magic because skill was largely a card selection and deck optimization challenge, which I love. Magic drafting has a lot more moving parts, but it feels so much more rewarding once you get the hang of the mechanics and the sets. This set, Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, has the wordiest and most complicated cards in a very long time. Seeing you enjoy this draft really makes me love what you do for the entire card game community. Keep it up Rarran, and if you decide to stick with magic, I’d suggest having someone else explain the ropes while you experience it. Makes it a lot less anxiety inducing

Magic takes time to learn, but its such a rewarding hobby. If you want to get better though, I would recommend playing in an in-person draft at your local game store. A lot of cards in magic have a lot of text because unlike a digital card game like hearthstone they have to tell you exactly, systematically, how to resolve an effect rather than just having the computer do it.

Ninjutsu, you can basically swap it for an attacking card for the Ninjutsu cost. So in essence, when you attack with your Beetle, you can Ninjutsu out that ninja and return the beetle to your hand, giving you an extra activation of its enter-the-battlefield trigger later.

More MTG content please Rarran! There's a lot of Hearthstone and MTG audience overlap and it's great to see a content creator covering both games

In Magic, the most important life point is your last*, so seeing you give up when you were higher than full health really hurt. There's always a chance to win until the final blow.
    * Though, to be fair, there is more than one way to lose: life down to 0 or less, drawing a card when there's none left in your deck, having 10 poison counters, and a myriad of other alt-win/lose conditions printed on specific cards (my favourite being Door to Nothingness, which reads "WWUUBBRRGG, T, Sacrifice Door to Nothingness: Target player loses the game.").

I must say jumping into a kamigawa draft is extremely bold. That set has given me more headaches in drafting than probably any other set in the last 3 years that I have played arena. TBH i wasnt even expecting a single win with the deck but well done. I hope you can do a fun collab video with Numot the nummy, LegenVd, deathsie, or nicolaibolas doing different quick drafts.

At 12:50 hold late game lands until after combat. It can bluff being a combat trick and force inefficient blocks by your opponent in fear of being blown up.

Yeah you did some miss plays and hadn't built a veeery good deck, but that's fine, my first draft were worst and when I played draft for the first time i was playing magic for like 2 years hahaha
Hope you keep the content coming, play some sealed if possible, its less stressful.

Quick tip: if you right-click on cards in-game, it brings it up on the side and gives you time to read it. Helps with cards like Sagas that have complicated effects.

    Hey Rarran,
I am a Magic player (since I can remember) and I really enjoying your videos only played Hearthstone briefly.
But hear me out, draft is the most skill intensive format and really not beginner friendly. I suggest trying to build a cheap or budget constructed (standard is cheaper) deck so you can get a feel what the game is first.
Take from someone that taught a lot of people how to play the game.
Good luck and keep up the good work.

Draft is an interesting format to get into, it’s very daunting and frustrating while you’re first trying it out, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll have fun. The quick draft is nice since you have unlimited time to read over the cards you choose, so take a moment and look over the cards and their abilities, Arena is very friendly in that aspect since they tell you the rules of all the abilities on the card. The same goes for spells in your hand, the game will explain all of its abilities if you right click(?) on it while you’re holding it.
