Around every corner, it feels like people are trying to scam you out of your money. But no one tries harder than audio companies. No I'm not talking about, Apple, Sony, Sennheiser or Samsung. I'm not even talking about hi-fi audio companies like Marantz, Bang and Olafson or Adam Audio. I'm talking about the shady companies that exist in the world of audiophile tweaks. The companies that use science-y sounding words to rip you off. So we got our audio aficionado friend Dankpods to come over and join us while we take a look at some of the craziest BS we've ever seen on this channel.

Not using Scarlet Fire for the testing is an absolute tragedy.
I kept waiting to hear it and was so disappointed.

Or at the very least Walk Through the Park.
I am sad i didn't get to see Frank :(
Be aware that some of the "quantum" stickers have thorium dioxide in the adhesive, so they may be mildly radioactive. As a precaution, wash your hands after handling them as ingesting alpha emitter material is not a good health thing. The ones I checked out that are sold to protect special people from their phone's 5G death beams were radioactive.
That phat resistor in the power conditioner thing is a resistive dropper. So the case should get reassuringly warm in use. (It's the cheapest way to run the LED flasher from the mains.)
So I shouldnt have eaten them????
It will be cool if they send you the products for further analysis and to re-affirm they are product scams.
of course BigClive shows up on a video like this :D
You know its serious when Bigclive is here
It sounds like they should have gotten you for the product analysis of why it’s so BS.

@@spookyghost7524 My question to why these products exist.
It’s so trippy matching a face to the DankPods voice
So many highlights in this episode:
- Dan teetering on the edge of losing his s**t until the burn-in comment, at which point he couldn’t contain himself anymore.
- Linus just realising that each product will have cost him sooo much money for utter audiophile BS. Good thing he set a limit!
- Wade’s “kid in a sweet shop” joy for each new piece of utter crap, knowing that it is going to wind up Dan and Linus…
- Adam’s sarcastic sale’s pitch for each product, and his glee when revealing the price.
- Everyone’s willingness to call out this audiophile rubbish, and joy when taking it apart to prove that it does NOTHING!!!!
Great episode, please can we have more of these collaborations 👏👏👏

Lot of 'engineers' like 2 pretend nothing matters but what they specialize in, 2 try & avoid appearing stupid, like they have the key 2 'hi-fi', like pretending 'speaker cables don't matter' & stuff, which is insane. & no, not necessarily just a resistance thing. Some of the best R 'mainframe twisted SCSI cables' & gray/red combo 'lamp wire' (whatever that stuff is where 1 lead is gray & the other copper = 'evens things out' = sounds BS until U hear it). Another is the best 'coax' is the thin flimsy 'trash' stuff = more 'transparent'. Less capacitance or something? iDunno = not an engineer, but lot of cables do sound different & more expensive doesn't mean better. Same goes with headphones 4 sure = several years iSpent trying out 'everything' & the best overall (currently) turned out 2 retail around $15 LOL

Wade just being there made my day
Having a need for burn-in sounds exactly like wasting time for the consumer so the returns window closes before they realise they’ve been had.
Uh-oh, some muppet's guessed it. Time to change the lingo.
Burn-in isn't absolutely hogwash. I make electronic test equipment for measuring photodiodes and they have to be burned in due to the extreme sensitivity of the measurements. I'm using a Keithley 237 Source-Measure Unit and applying a few hundred volts and watching the current. It'll drop from ~1's of µAs to sub nAs. No one has been able to explain exactly whats going on, but the supposition is that contaminants are getting migrated or its something to do with surface charge. It definitely helps to heat it up in an oven while you're doing it. I dont think any of this would ever be noticeable in audio equipment, but there is evidence of burn-in being real.
I spent a lot of money on my headphones and when I first got them I was ready to send them back immediately, but I played metal at 150% comfortable listening levels for like 24 hours and it made an absolute difference. I figure its probably from the foam fatiguing to be a little more compliant or maybe even some "deburring" if you will, and I'm sure you wont.
If burn in was that necessary to make headphones sound good, why don’t manufacturers do so in the factories before shipping them out?
@@timothycuff605 because burn in time also shortens the life span. Lol.
I don't always burn-in products at my home, but when I do, I always burn-in the house taps. Can't be too careful, don'tcha know.
You got the Shrek man himself! Essentially, if your wire is shielded or balanced, you’re not going to have noticeable capacitance or inductance issues. If it’s a singular cable without shielding, it could be effected, which is a pretty cheap problem to fix with ground shielding. Cheap 2 cable stereo wire issues are negligible, because they’re amplified, and we’re not dealing with the gigahertz range of frequencies that love to be absorbed by everything.
This reminds me of walking into a Snap-On truck.
Well, compared the the literal e-waste in this video, the stuff in the snap-on truck at least functions as advertised
"The powder probably energises the Americans who made them" - That was a VERY subtle joke
I'm not sure I'd say "subtle" but it was certainly effective
No, "Made in America" is funny, 9 times out of 10, that shit aint made even on an island off the coast of the U.S, they stick that on stuff to make it more "appealing".

The IC @12:21 is probably a timer or a counter to make the led blink. The rest is just a half rectifying bridge to power the timer/counter. Being a half bridge rectifier means the IC is only powered half the time and they probably use that as part of the count. It also allows them to save an insurmountable amount of money in two more diodes :|

@@Arctic_silverstreak It is possible but this IC appears to have more pins. Either way, I do not think that someone who uses (what looks like) a 5W resistor to limit the current from 120V cares if half of the circuit is just for show. Maybe that IC was cheapest they could get.

As someone who is in the audio industry this is amazing. I advise so many clients against these types of products, but sometimes it falls on deaf ears, lol. In one of our showrooms we have one 2 meter power cable that costs over $11k USD. It’s insane.
heh, deaf ears
11k sounds ridiculous, but power cables do sometimes make a difference. The bs in the video do not.
@@y.m.6988 11k falls not only squarely, but cubicly in the "diminishing returns" category
@@y.m.6988The difference shouldn't be noticeable if the cable is running as intended. More expensive cables might be more durable, but that's really all you can get 99% of the time for paying extra. It's below 100 bucks almost always, though and usually the durability gives it *some* value.
@@y.m.6988 nah mate, power cables make like no difference at all. The power has already travelled hundreds of feet in super-cheap cables before it reaches the socket; the last little bit makes zero difference. And if it does, the equipment plugged into it is substandard.

So like one time i was on a plane, some guy with sad looking face came up to me and he's an audio fan, and he told me "oi, i need some of the audio cleaner, can you go back and get one for me?" Dan, the actual audio guy, losing his mind is killing me. I am actually laughing out loud at his reactions.
dankpod had me cracking up the whole video, this collab was so great😂
I'm glad that you made a video about this garbage. i got into the audio scene about 10 years ago now (my first bit of kit was a Lepai A6 USB/FM Hi-Fi stereo amplifier with some Philips bookshelf speakers i got from goodwill) the only thing i can verify to "clean up signal" is a ground loop isolator if you are getting buzzing, humming or high pitched squealing. they are 10-20 dollars. if that don't fix your setup you doing something wrong. what these companies pray on is if someone has buzzing or has a fear of buzzing and they say "well technically this does help" and in theory it does, just like pissing on a campfire can put the fire out.
"Please don't dismantle it yourself.
Dan?"

Wade and Dan are such a great duo. They both have this desire to rip things open and I love it.
Too bad 1 grit wasn't there
You do realise that now that you have reviewed these products, the company will rebrand to say their products are recommended by Linus Tech.
i love how their talking about a $200 outlet but then put a $70 SCREWDRIVER UP AS A AD OF THEIR OWN STORE.
aw Poor Dan, he's just sitting there in pain
I feel you man, i feel you. this stuff loops between funny and depressing several times over.
To this day, my so-called "friends" still believe that power cords and USB cables can make an audible difference, is mind boggling, and they said "it can't be measured, you only can hear the difference"... 💀
Power cords I can see, if you have unbalanced or dirty power (you know, like you could see on an oscilloscope). USB cables? That's digital, baby. No difference..
Now, being fair, they CAN make a difference if there's say, a ground loop, or extreme RF interference. But that's also very much measurable.
I'm curious, if I have dirty power issues, how would a power cable help? I assume most of the power filtering is in the device the cable plugs into.
Broken/Damaged power and usb cables make a difference 😂
@syin111 if it's JUST a cable, it probably won't, but if it's an AC adapter, there could be actual line filtering in there.
I think the composition of the items is on point. The people who made them are masters of their art. All of it is very pretty to the eye. The sad point is that companies like Logitec who make the functioning devices, don't employ such artisans for the exterior of their devices.
Poor Wade.
The man owns a Shrek watch.
He shouldn't have to deal with this.
At this point I have seen more of Wade's face on this channel than I have on any of his own. XD

Wow... so trash tier oil for a premium. I wouldn't even....
touch that garbage.
The audiophile community is also actively helping all of these scams. For example, recently I found a video on an audiophile channel saying they could hear differences in optical cables, saying the sound was a lot better on a 300$ cable, lol.
the fact that they dont understand how digital signals work is hillarious. if you where able to make any difference in the signal. it would corrupt or skip. analogue however is way more sensitive. and there is definitely dos and donts.
Most of those guys live on reviews or sell products, if they say it does t matter and don't have the required tools to measure, what are they gonna do?
@@Peron1-MC Technically the signal is analog, but encoded digital, that is why we have single-mode and multi-mode cables for optical, and USB use a diferential pair and analog comparator, but that on audio level is pointless, all the physics they claim are real but only when you start going to microwave levels.
Ironically spdif will work through wet spaghetti. You have to make a real mess of a cable to make it quit working.
@@Peron1-MC bUt JiTtEr, how can I be 1000% sure that the bits are arriving in lockstep precision at my DAC???
14:04 "That's like having a burn-in time on your tap" Well, actually -- 🤓
Yes I'm aware I'm likely to get slaughtered with nerd emojis, but my grandfather actually works in plumbing, and any time he would replace our well filters or run delimer through the heater, we'd have to run all the taps for 2 or 3 minutes to flush out the old water and potential leftover chemicals so that fresh water would come through the next time we had to shower or something.
Burn-in on audio is a myth though, speakers are not motors or batteries and will run pretty much the same whether their new or old or in different environments.
My eyes lied to me, i read. "I gave my money to criminals... Like Dankpods"
You've stepped into an incredibly fertile field here boys.
*Keep digging!*
Oh man... They didn't even scratch the topsoil yet. The braided audio cables, the ferrite chokes, the impedence plugs, gold-plated vs solid gold cabling... There's still a rabbit hole of marketing B.S. they can dive into.
@@jayrosgameboymodz5438 This isn't their first audiophile rodeo, there's a few older vids
They've covered audiophilia every once in a blue moon for years and I'm super disappointed they haven't treaded into those waters more often, especially since they have a comprehensive cable tester now.
"Hyperaudiophilia" can be a serious mental condition. It occurs when an audiophile (hi-fi enthusiast, nothing wrong with that) achieves a level of sound quality that can not be significantly improved, but feels compelled to continue trying to do so at any cost. It's a form of addiction and can cause otherwise intelligent, rational individuals to be taken in by what others clearly see as nonsensical claims related to sham products. Such products tend to be extremely expensive and, generally speaking, do nothing at all.
@@jamescruz8678One of my favs back in the CD days was a weighted disc to make the CD more of a flywheel to "smooth out the data stream." Works for vinyl, right? Please also do a video about audiophile products that sound like snake oil, but actually work. I'M sure there are about 2 or 3 out there. E.g. I heard about some really high quality analog audio cables that apparently really make a difference, at least in studio environments and could even convince people who were very sceptical about it.
That's the thing _analog_ audio does in fact require good quality cabling (not necessarily insane priced though). Digital audio which is what alot of audiophile crap is pushed on these days do not need good cables, the digital codecs all have error correction.
As a freelance audio engineer, this sings to my heart. Dans reaction to the USB audio "improvers" is absolute gold
