I found it interesting that the Switch version is "less open world" with loading times between areas, is this due to the Switch not having an SSD or because it only has 4 GB of RAM? I was curious if the PS4 and Xbox One versions that use HDs are also like this, does anyone know?
@@MoonSarito entering a shop in Hogsmead on Xbox One requires waiting almost half a minute for door to open. So yes, older consoles with HDDs also struggled with loading some areas.
@@MoonSarito It think it's a mix of factors. Surely the low ram is one of the biggest problems, but also the not-so-powered mobile cpu couldn't guarantee a good transition between different areas. Just think about reading and rendering even more areas, there's not enough power. Not even mentioning the lack of ssd or even a good HDD. But, we must admit, it's still a great porting, surely better than MK1 and GTA trilogy

you know, looking at this comparison really shows how much the technology has evolved on the graphics side, you always hear people saying that the leap between generations has decreased with each new one, but this shows that there IS a noticeable difference once you look at it more closely.
I was so surprised, props to the people responsible for the port because I truly was expecting a terrible port, I even thought they’d make some kind of combat only or level based game the same way ds and 3ds ports of games used to straight up just be cashgrab platformers
Ffs yes the Switch hardware is old but Switch had shown its a fighter of a system and even newer and more powerful hardware struggled with this game’s engine.
I honestly would have preferred an art style overhaul, not just because it would have run better, but also because I don't like the excess detailing on the models, it grosses me out.
2:20 : It's normal, the definition on switch is way low than pc. Switch barely success 1080P, the first Zelda was in 900P. That's why it take less place on the "hard drive" and the quality is less good. What was the resolution used on pc for the test ? 1080p or 1440 or more ? (with all the options in ultra ?). Thanks for this comparison.
Nintendo will bring out Switch 2 when it’s ready and why would Nintendo stop selling the current Switch just because you want Switch 2? The current Switch is still selling very well, be patient and enjoy the current Switch.
I reckon the SD card is a huge factor in fps drops. As someone who once tried booting Shadow of the Tomb Raider on PC via SSD then again on SD card, the performance was night and day. Though considering even a faster HDD will outperform an SD card, it's definitely time for an m.2 or something on Switch or its sequel.
This running at 30fps make sense. What bothers me is ports of very older games on weaker hardware ported to the switch that's locked at 30. too many of those.
hogwarts legacy working on the switch is a major demonstration on why optimization is so vital for games. many modern AAA games opt out of optimization, which is why we are getting games that are 200+ GB in size and unoptimized files and code making games choppy and laggy even on modern hardware.
Honestly if I hadn’t watched gameplay on the ps5 or the new Xbox, then I wouldn’t have been so picky and spoiled. I have it on the switch and I would’ve thought it was a great game if there wasn’t better consoles playing it on higher res.🤷🏼♀️ Also, the loading screens have taken up to 2 minutes on the switch.
Idc about the textures, as long as I can tell what it is and it isn’t 8 bit, it’s fine. I have this game on the PS4 so if I want looks, I’ll go there, and just having the entirety of the game in the palms of your hands is why I want this version.
It plays amazingly well. My wife and I played it on the big screen for about four hours and had no issues other than the weird Pitch bug for the player character.
Please, I'm looking for a good answer. Would you go with the PC version (I have a decently powerful gaming PC) or the Switch version? Is the Switch version still the worst option, or because of the performance of the PC version, is it better to go with Switch? I'd love a straight answer. Thanks!
I'd definitely go with the PC version. I'd only recommend the Switch version if it's the only console available to you and the only way you'd be able to play the game.
Playing my recently purchased switch OLED has made me realize how little I care about graphical fidelity if the experience is well optimized. This is coming from someone with a $2000+ gaming PC
I find it graphically very similar to The Witcher 3 next gen patch release on Switch. Absolutely beautiful, but of course the next gen consoles version are very superior. But not enough to make me choose them instead of the Switch.
I tried to play it on my PC but purchased it from steam and had issues throughout the entire game, could never get past the beginning of the game. Hopefully switch will be better, idc too much about the graphics since I never got to enjoy them anyway
I think everyone out there who tought the game would come out differently was a fool. This game, realistically, couldn't have been made better on Switch. They did the magic here, it's an almost 7 yeas old potato and it's working in a better state than eveyone with common sense might have tought. Let's just be grateful that a lot of people (mostly children) would be able to enjoy it on their current machine, even if it isn't the most powerful one
The Switch is not a potato, it’s 7 years old but it’s far from a potato and this game proves once again that if the developers put in the work and is talented then, you’ll see great results and see that the Switch can do when effort is put in by the developers.
@@Adamtendo_player_1 Yeah, i've just said that because people tend to forget about one thing: the Switch is (and was at the release time) an underpowered console. They tend to compare its own games or portings with those on PS4/Steam Deck while there's no comparison at all for obvious reason. Can't you see the futility of all those videos comparing the graphics or framerate of a console with a mobile chipset with that of a home console or handled with intel/amd, a better gpu and much more ram? It is simply an unfair and useless comparison, often put on screen to allow underdeveloped individuals to start with the phrases 'It runs at 10fps' or 'The graphics are blurry, my eyes are burning'. The technical analysis (considering the hardware the games run on) is more than legitimate, but comparing Switch games to any more powerful machine honestly makes me smile, I understand it's a way for youtubers to ride the wave of the moment, but it remains and will remain a ridiculous thing.
@@Adamtendo_player_1 P.S. i agree with the quote about devs. In fac, i've preordered a long time ago the Arkham Trilogy because i trust Turn me Up games after the Borderlands Collection :)
@@GiuseppeAngelino95 the Switch is comparable to an Xbox 360 or PS3 in graphics capabilities and that’s not a bad thing as those systems had impressive graphics for their time, yes the Switch is underpowered compared a home console like PS4 or PS5 but as you say it’s powered by a mobile chipset that was once cutting edge a few years ago, I personally think the Switch truly punched above its weight with some of the best looking games on the system we’re Nintendo developed or Switch exclusives like Bayonetta, Zelda and Mario, that’s what I bought my Switch for, not to play Hogwarts Legacy, which for me the Switch should have gotten a version with the Switch in mind.
@@Adamtendo_player_1 Yeah...having tailored versions (like devs did with DS) could've been better, but nowadays games costs are way higher than before, so i can understand when devs just try to "adapt" the game by tweaking and downgrading where needed.
I'm actually surprized by the performance. Surem it is ugly but what can we ask from a hynrid platform that is almost 7 years old? I can't help but to compare it to the Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1 and it is clear which developer didn't care about delaying the port if it meant achieving good results. Thumbs up to them!
It might not even be the developers fault of the twitch version of MK one. It was probably Warner Bros that wanted MK out the door along with the other version so I’m not going to put too much blame on the devs here for how MK one turned on switch.
I admire and respect Avalanche for making this even a thing, but my god I’m getting tired of this lackluster hardware. I’ve lost interest in my switch solely because of the subpar hardware in today’s standards. I love the switch, the games are fun, but this is just too low for me. I’ve gotten so used to greater and more powerful gear that this seems comical.
I got it for the switch as i know my pc would crash just trying to play this game honestly thr graphic drop and framerate isn't that bad. Got to remember switch is 7 years old so the graphics and gameplay may not be as sharp and detailed as the pc and other newer tech. Besides i have hopes that portkey could always send out an update that could increase the games graphic design later on if they do decide to make a dlc for the game
People always talk about the game being playable, like if it's playable than that is enough. However, some games, especially this one, the standout feature is the graphics. If you don't have the graphics, then it's a pretty basic game just like many others.
It depends where you come from. The graphics still standout but if you are used to 4k high end textures and resolution, you are talking about visuals that are more in line with CGI cutscenes/movies or series than yeah the Switch version might look like an early PS360 game but in reality is still above that. Especially the character models are way more than the PS360 could do. Also look at the amount of Watts the newer console uses, that doesnt seem to deminish while a Switch uses 15 watt at highest when docked, the PS4 was atleast 150 Watt.

I also had fun with ps1 or x360 games at one time, i did not unlearn having fun with good games and not so good graphics, because graphics are only as good to what you compare them to.
Thanks very much, I'm glad you enjoyed the review!
This actually looks amazing considering the hardware
That's what happens if a studio really cares about a port to a less powerful system.
I'm kinda impressed and like how the Switch version looks.
And even if I don't like the Harry Potter movies, I getting interested by this game.
you know, looking at this comparison really shows how much the technology has evolved on the graphics side, you always hear people saying that the leap between generations has decreased with each new one, but this shows that there IS a noticeable difference once you look at it more closely.
The textures/models are insanely detailed for a switch port... This is truly a "magical" port😜
I was so surprised, props to the people responsible for the port because I truly was expecting a terrible port, I even thought they’d make some kind of combat only or level based game the same way ds and 3ds ports of games used to straight up just be cashgrab platformers
Looks really good, should of shipped the PC version with this setting to run on more PC's.
Haha I vaguely remember a "potato mode" mod or something like that around launch that was designed to make it run better on PC!
It's so fascinating that the entire game fits in 14 Gigabytes, that's magic😂👌🏻
as long as you play this in handheld mode, given the ancient switch hardware, it's a pretty solid port
Ffs yes the Switch hardware is old but Switch had shown its a fighter of a system and even newer and more powerful hardware struggled with this game’s engine.
@@Adamtendo_player_1 the game just got downgraded till the switch can run that game it just looks bad almost ps2 level
@@dfgffdvfvvf7909 of course the graphics are downgraded but the Switch can do better than these graphics which looks PS2 quality.
Thanks for this comparison.
nintendo should just give us switch 2 and start porting newer games there instead of keep forcing to push it like now
Nintendo will bring out Switch 2 when it’s ready and why would Nintendo stop selling the current Switch just because you want Switch 2? The current Switch is still selling very well, be patient and enjoy the current Switch.
Honestly might grab this just for traveling. Especially since I don’t like taking my console to hotels
I think the use of dithering could've helped distant, lower res textures look sharper.
That said, this is darn impressive for a handheld console.
Honestly, I kind of feel a sort of nostalgia for the switch version. Makes me think of all those old pc games I used to play xD
How did you know that the door is stinky? Did you smell it 😂
You can just tell with some doors in Hogwarts! 😂
I got it a few weeks ago clocked in at 44 hours just trying to finish up the post game quest
This running at 30fps make sense. What bothers me is ports of very older games on weaker hardware ported to the switch that's locked at 30. too many of those.
I just ordered my steam oled and can’t wait to have some better graphics. I was just super grateful to play this game though!
hogwarts legacy working on the switch is a major demonstration on why optimization is so vital for games. many modern AAA games opt out of optimization, which is why we are getting games that are 200+ GB in size and unoptimized files and code making games choppy and laggy even on modern hardware.
It runs like shit
Honestly if I hadn’t watched gameplay on the ps5 or the new Xbox, then I wouldn’t have been so picky and spoiled. I have it on the switch and I would’ve thought it was a great game if there wasn’t better consoles playing it on higher res.🤷🏼♀️ Also, the loading screens have taken up to 2 minutes on the switch.
But still I haven't seen an open world performance test
Idc about the textures, as long as I can tell what it is and it isn’t 8 bit, it’s fine. I have this game on the PS4 so if I want looks, I’ll go there, and just having the entirety of the game in the palms of your hands is why I want this version.
The fact that it runs on Switch at all is enough.
It plays amazingly well. My wife and I played it on the big screen for about four hours and had no issues other than the weird Pitch bug for the player character.
Lies it plays bad i have it so bad fps
@@benitopina1262getting a solid 30 on my day one switch, if it bothers you that badly get a PS5 or something.
@@NeonPixels81 you cant recomend a game that look that bad
@@benitopina1262 I just did, my guy, sue me.
@@NeonPixels81 you waste your money
Dannnnnng and they optimised it so well! Morta Kombat 1 has no excuses
Props to the devs being able to do this.
Gameplay and performance is great, graphics are wildly muddy.
I find it graphically very similar to The Witcher 3 next gen patch release on Switch. Absolutely beautiful, but of course the next gen consoles version are very superior. But not enough to make me choose them instead of the Switch.
I think the witcher 3 port looks much better with the update (that being said it is an older game)
The never dying switch
So should we play it on the Steam Deck from Steam or emulate the Switch version on the Steam Deck?
Totally, Digital Foundry's video on Mortal Kombat 1 was a very interesting watch to see how poor the Switch version really was!
It might not even be the developers fault of the twitch version of MK one. It was probably Warner Bros that wanted MK out the door along with the other version so I’m not going to put too much blame on the devs here for how MK one turned on switch.
@@Adamtendo_player_1 True! I still think it's sad but it might be the reason
nah the switch is just garbage
I admire and respect Avalanche for making this even a thing, but my god I’m getting tired of this lackluster hardware. I’ve lost interest in my switch solely because of the subpar hardware in today’s standards. I love the switch, the games are fun, but this is just too low for me. I’ve gotten so used to greater and more powerful gear that this seems comical.
I just hope they will now fix the PC version about crashing when using DLSS 3 and raytracing.
The optimization teams a legend. End of story.
Also look at the amount of Watts the newer console uses, that doesnt seem to deminish while a Switch uses 15 watt at highest when docked, the PS4 was atleast 150 Watt.
your accent is quite interesting - it sounds like a combination of an american and a northern british accent. sounds cool.
Thank you! That's pretty much exactly what it is; I was born in the UK and moved to Canada when I was 9, but still managed to keep some parts of my accent!
I found it interesting that the Switch version is "less open world" with loading times between areas, is this due to the Switch not having an SSD or because it only has 4 GB of RAM? I was curious if the PS4 and Xbox One versions that use HDs are also like this, does anyone know?
It is amazing indeed to port that game ultra low settings on a 3gb RAM 12w low power device
Good for a road trip but the controller reaction lag is frustrating. I may just need new controllers.
I noticed the dialogue doesn't work all the time. Sometimes they talk and then it's just the background music. Is this fixable with a patch.
Does the switch port have the arachnophobia mode like the console versions?
Sorry a bit late, but yes it does!
its only right that the graphics will be much much dial down, from more than 70GB to 14GB, and the switch has similar hardware to an iPhone 7/8, I'm more surprised they pulled it off, and honestly i wish more developers would port their PC games to Mobile phones
bloody impressive optimization for switch!
They did the magic by nerfing the openworld aspect of the game, now there are loading zones, but it's honestly still impressive, it looked better than The Witcher 3 at launch and have higher resolutions overall too
Its working great in nintendo switch i love it i enjoy the game ❤
before i bought my version on switch (my pc couldnt handle it) i heard that the load time are horiible but they are not bad
i play this game 4 days now and im having fun
i saw only one issue when i was invisible at one location my caracter vanished for a moment
