  • This is how we repair MacBook Pro 2016 2017, 13" and 15" display with the issue called "Flexgate" or “Stage light” Effect.The screen will switch off if open to an angle beyond 45 degrees.
    Video quality is poor but it gives a good overview on how difficult that repair is.

      Apple replace dispays for free. "five years after the first retail sale of the unit or 3 years from the start date of this program, whichever is longer." As the program commenced on May 21, 2019, this means the affected MacBook units are eligible for the program until May 20, 2022, or at latest, February 2023.

    First of all, thank you @Phuket My Mac if I had any skill I'd be trying to do this myself...
    Second, a question for you and for everyone else here suffering Apple's lack of accountability. I have a 2016, MBP 13 and it's screen goes COMPLETELY BLACK, when I open it beyond 45 degrees, and sometimes recovers at about 30 degrees (sometimes I have to close it all the way), which, in my eyes (ears?) sounds like it should apply for the replacement program. However when I've contacted support I get the following script:
    "We are only replacing your screen when it presents 'backlight issues/failure', that means, theater lights at the bottom OR no light, but WITH THE IMAGE STILL VISIBLE (they suggest shinning a flash light on the screen, and when doing do that, thry say I SHOULD SEE A VERY DIM IMAGE, which I quite frankly don't), otherwise, WE CANT HELP as this issue is not what is mentioned in the extended coverage program".
    So my question is, am I having a different issue here? It seems, at the very least, related. But at least here, in Mexico, this distinction is everything. Not sure if I'm experiencing 'more advanced' damage of the same issue (in which case they should own up to it) or a completely different, albeit, related issue that the company won't fix.
    Sorry for the wordy explanation.
    Any suggestions?

    That video was well done. I tried to solder 3 jumper wires the other day on a joycon. It went back in my back burner pile. I need to get some more skillz and maybe better soldering iron before I try again. How will this repair not break like the original cable? I am curious to see the update video.

    • @PhuketMyMac
      @PhuketMyMac  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well if you give enough slack to the wires, they will have less constraints and won't break, at least from my experience.
      Now there is a new method that I've pinned and that I would encourage you to use. It's actually easier to apply but still requires some good soldering skills.

    Hello. I also have trouble on my Macbook Pro 2017, touch bar. A year ago, it starts flickering. I do not have enough money to fix it by LCD replacement. So, what I did was when the screen starts to flicker I just close it for a few hours and use it again. It takes only 15mins before flickering again, so, as I student its kinda hassle. Then, there was this online friend of mine who told me that I do not need to have an LCD Replacement, I just need to fix the flex. So, I want to ask you, if ever I fix the flex on my laptop is it a good move? Or do I really need to have an LCD replacement?

    Hello, maybe (not) a stupid question here but wouldn't be more easier job, instead of wiring up every single trace and connect it directly to the board connector (which TBH it looks awful and unprofessional) just "bind" the 2 parts break of the flex by overlaying it? I mean scraping both 2 parts of the flex to expose the traces put one part over the other and merge it with something like low temperature soldering. In that way you would preserve the connector and the job looks cleaner to not mention the time saved for that microsoldering work that i think requires also some good skills...

    • @PhuketMyMac
      @PhuketMyMac  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Joe,
      Not a stupid question. I heard of that repair method by connecting the 2 flex cables together and will attempt it in a week or so once I receive those new cables. Let’s see how it goes.
      Regarding the awfulness of how it looks, I don’t believe it matters as long as the repair lasts and works. So I wouldn’t call that unprofessional, especially since at the time I had started that repair we couldn’t order those new cables. Overall do what you think is best for you.

      I ended up calling Apple support and told them that my late 2016 15" had the fluxgate problem. I mentioned the 13" backlight service program ( support.apple.com/13-inch-macbook-pro-display-backlight-service )and they told me it was only for the 13". I told them that I know a bunch of people who have the same problem with the 15" and that the only reason they were offering the service for the 13" was because people petitioned and sued over it. I also told them that I was ready to file a lawsuit. After asking to talk to a supervisor and telling her the story, she ended up giving me full service repair on my MacBook. I brought it in and they fixed every single thing wrong with my laptop (more than just the display). The total services would have costed me around $1700 if I paid for it myself. So now I basically have a brand new laptop. I think the whole lawyer thing scared her. I was actually told to do this by a Mac repair company near where I live. They specifically told me to call Apple support and tell them the problem, then ask to talk to a supervisor and mention lawyers and lawsuits. And it worked. I was so surprised.
