Anyone interested how this works: The LCD has the following parts (in order from front to back): vertical polarizer, glass substrate electrode, liquid crystal, another glass substrate electrode, horizontal polarizer and the backlight (white fluorescent tubes or LEDs). This is how an LCD works: First, light coming from the tubes or LEDs are polarized horizontally by the horizontal polarizer, and then it passes through the glass substrate and then to the liquid crystals (which will do something magical as I will discuss later), passes to another glass substrate and then to a vertical polarizer. Now, since light has been horizontally polarized by the first polarizer from the back, there should be no light that will pass through the vertical polarizer. Now, remember the liquid crystal? The liquid crystals bend light from 0 to 90 degrees (black to full white, respectively) depending on the voltage applied from the glass substrates (which sandwiches the crystals), the substrate contains individual shapes that defines a pixel. If the crystal bends light to a 90 degrees, the subpixel (R, G or B) will be illuminated to the fullest, if the crystal doesn't bend the light (0 degrees) it will just be black. In other words, the angle determines the intensity of the light. Removing the vertical polarizer will allow any orientation of light to pass through at the front end, which is why you'll see white. With a properly oriented polarizer, you can again filter only the vertically-oriented light to pass through.
Adrian T It depends on what type of polarized filters you use, some are linear like the ones used in LCDs, and some are circular like your 3D glasses. The circular polarizers filters out light which are either polarized clockwise or anti-clockwise. So, yes linearly polarized light on circularly polarized filters will not work.

+Allen Clark Why do people always jump to heat guns? Just use a hair dryer! They're like literally 10 times less hot and do the same job over a longer (safer) period.
+George Farren Quality heatguns typically have better temperature control (cheap handhelds usually do not) and support attachments to help direct the heat more evenly (I like using wide tips for displays). The other advantage is they are typically capable of melting lead-free solder for reflowing ball grid arrays. While I agree that for most people a hairdryer is fine, if you regularly do electronic repairs a good heatgun and soldering iron are invaluable tools.

Perfect! My school just got rid of a bunch of old monitors that they updated and let us take them. I grabbed three of them as backups, and now I have some monitors I can test on!
Excited giggling tee-hee-hee-heeee!
@ImTheBoyReal I did end up using 1 as a second screen, tried this out on the other 2 and it didn't go out so well, so I stripped them for parts, and scrapped the rest.
Lol the school where I studied still using old CTR monitors.
how to hide your porn v.2

+Jack McDonald vr

+MACKEM_uk DIY noise damoeners: egg cartons glued all under the desk......

Even 7 years later, this is very helpful!
Could this work with a phone?
Grandma with an Inhaler phones dont use polarising filter ffs
BadAtGames
Thank you!
Grandma with an Inhaler mista beast
BadAtGames actually that's false they do use polarizing filters inside the lcd
MrDeadmanwalken1 Small amount of phones use lcd most use tft.
EDIT: MOST PHONES USE AMOLED OR LED SCREENS
Super video man. I super liked it.
super comment, i super liked it
Bam 530 well thats super
r/engrish
we need a "super" counter in your videos.
final count: 240,000 spm (supers per minute)
And now for this video's sponsor: the word super
Surprised how perfectly that works.
Didn't the video used to be called "How to hide your porn"?
Lol, the probably changed because of all the bashing
Eddev I find growtopians everywhere
+ZachCotton GT ikr, I see their TH-cam profile pics and I'm like, wow... GT is really for anyone. People who watch different things and play different games, lots plat GT
ZachCotton GT So it's you?
Eddev that video is there too
NovalPro earbuds up the sleeve?
I think I know whyb your inverter died.
(THERE WAS LIQUID COMIN OUTTA THE BACK!)
Bloxy Bloxmon that’s exactly what I was thinking. XD
It's called LCD it projects the screen
I said project not protect
That's what I thought as well
Emblem lmao what are you trying to say
*Talks about the super clean cuts he made*
Polarising filter: *Breaks immediately*
That one small cut equals LOTS OF PAPERWORK FOR LINUS
thats if linus doesnt tell luke just suck it up and never report it

Hair dryer or heat gun on low setting may help to loosen the glue.
This had been floating around the internet since at least 2005.
billybobjoe198 super useful information thank you for telling me it's not like I know that or didn't care this was really useful
@@jdevilgamerdrjuciyfruit1348 and your comment was even more useless. Thanks!
I was regretful, I broke my glasses and monitor, the knife fell of and penetrated in the screen
gg
Get Good.
well if it didnt work blame the age of the screen not the knife.. monitors are immune to that stuff.
"Inverter borked? Project worked, monitor didn't? Nothing to do with project we did?" We can see liquid damaging LCD layer and other internals.. (water based thingy was used? Isoclean or pure ethanol would work w/o issues). I know this is old vid, but i got like... I like LTT, but some older vids made me sad. Linus, i'm new to Your stuff and i like it. Really entertaining. And quality in 2017-19 has risen dramatically. Up.
Someone help me!
I have a 4K 32 inch monitor
So will this work on my cat
only if you fist him first
+Kaptain Kappa ok thanks
I have a 4K 65 inch curved tv 😬
+Killa Kook You realize that just because someone likes minecraft doesn't mean that they can't have a nice TV.
Avarickan no but 10 year olds dont have 65 inch 4k curved tv
wait.... is the linustechtips channel picture him referencing Steve jobs?
Dylan Fitzgerald boom mind blown
I commented that like 3 years ago and I got no replys and I think yes it is

I think it was mimicking Linda
3 more tools to add:
1. Goo be gone (obvious)
2. An X-ACTO knife to cut screen
3. Heat gun for the glue.
Wow, you guys really have made a lot of progress in your video quality. That being said, this is still pretty cool.
drinks shot when he says super. dies 90 seconds into the video
2:31 What the one from iFixIt? Showing they are plastic, cheap crap sold at an overpriced price?
+Steven Whiting 3:10 and yes, there's the evidence.
+Steven Whiting No shit, it's just overpriced shit aimed for moronic people.
+TehHijack you have 10 of them then
SirBillyMcSilly I actually have 46.
+Steven Whiting Could you recommend a higher quality repair kit than the iFixit? Thanks!
"Huh? son why are you cutting our monitor?"
"Too see p*rn infront of you guys..."
Homeless now!
Don't downvote this you philistines. He put in all the effort to make this a very useful tutorial. Sometimes tech just shits the bed and that was the case here. Still worth publishing the vid! Thanks Brandon!

Wouldn't using a heat gun help soften up the glue?
It might have damaged the actual display.
+Allen Clark I went overboard on the heatgun on my tablet and the screen broke.
+Allen Clark Why do people always jump to heat guns? Just use a hair dryer! They're like literally 10 times less hot and do the same job over a longer (safer) period.
+Allen Clark When fixing mobile phone's digitizer, I just use a hairdryer. I think that would also help.
Kudos tto you for trying out a thing, not everything going as expected and still uploading the process. MUCH more realistic and close to what other people would experience
That blank stare at the beginning of the video
I love these DIY vids they make haveing a channel so much better
how many times can he say "super" before it gets annoying ?
1
i took a drink each time. wasn't annoying.

Wait, that's my fricking monitor which I am watching this video in this very moment lmao.
Glad to know it's quality enough for LTT
Perfect way to watch porn at work.
+ಠ_ృ but then everyone will think you are a weird slacker staring at a white screen all day.
+Aaronspark7 Why does no one ever bring up the fact that you're wearing fucking glasses while staring at the white screen?
Aaronspark7
I do that already.
lmao
on some older monitors from around 2005 come apart and separate into layers with no glue
recommended on one of those old monitors so there is no risk of slicing the LCD or LED panel
11:43 I think it was coz of the goo remover dripping in the back vents on the display! Maybe??
Yeah while you were watching some personal things someone bought same pairs of glasses and now he wanders wherever people are using these glassses and goes saying off to everbody:
" Your Privacy Is My Priority! "
you shorted the inverter when you used the goo gone and didn't dry off the rest that might have touched the circuit board before plugging the monitor back in.
hey Luke its been while, always look forward to your videos.
I assume some companies would give the option to have the filter already removed.
