watching this while having my job to refurb old macbooks is interesting. OpenCore is a life savor. You gotta select the correct model of the macbook before installing OC to disk, and you can edit options with OC before installing it to disk, helps a lot with drivers.
In the settings of OCLP, you can increase the time the OpenCore bootloader stays on the screen. I usually set it to ten seconds. As far as the grphics issues, OCLP 1.0.1 is supposed to install root patches automatically, but I suspect that you may need to reindtall them.
This installation would have gone smoother if you had first zapped the PRAM before starting the EFI Partition on your USB stick. Also, when the USB drive booted up the MacOS Recovery the very first thing that you should have opened was Disk Utilities and erased itthe internal Hard Drive and formatted it as APS and as a GUID partition map BEFORE moving on to the Sonama OS installer. This is whats known as a 'clean installation' and what should be done on hard drive except with exception of an upgrade from currently installed OS software to a nerwr version of the OS in which case the drive already has the proper formatting and partition mapping installed on the internal drive. Personally I was amazed that you didn't even know to do this because it has been Computer 101 practically since the invention of what we know today as a hard drive. Prior to hard drives applications were boot loaded on to computers using magnetic tape or floppy drives that didn't need to be formatted when installed. Hard Drives formatted for modern MacOS computers and the Hard Drives formatted for modern Windows PC's are not compatable with each other. The MacOS hard drive APS format is not natively recognized by a Windows PC and a Hard Drive that has been formatted as NTSF for a Windows PC can not be recognized by a MacOS booted from an APS drive. I believe the only reason that you were at all able to see both the Windows and the MacOS system software running at the same time on the same drive was due to the internal drive booting from the installed Open Core Legacy Patcher's UFI Boot partition. What you should do is shutdown your MacBook and plug in your Open Core Legacy Patcher Sonama USB drive and restart and hold down the Optin, Apple, the P and the R keyboard keys while the Mac boots until you hear the startup chime to zap the PRAM clearing the onboard memory before installion. I've found that if you continue to hold those keys down til you hear a second louder chime is more effective at clearing the memory. After the second chime continue to hold down the option while releasing the other keys and until the MacOS Recovery loads and then you can install Sonoma. During the OS installation process your Mac will reboot several times during the instal which is normal although on some of the older Mac models the installation may stall or stop completely during any one of those restarts but I found that if I restart the Mac while zapping the PRAM until the second chime it will continue the install to completion. I am currently running Sonoma on an early 2008 MacPro.
The video screen savers are 4K250FPS so that's probably why it was struggling lol. I have a 2008 MacBook pro I'd like to try this on with the 8600MGT and 512 VRAM, I'd be interested in seeing how it handles Sonoma.
I run this exact laptop with MacOS Ventura, it is running quite well. I use it as a big dvd player at my treadmill and watch the occasional Netflix/Disney shows.
that has nothing todo with apple it has todo with the limitation of the Intel CPU. the 1nd Gen core i5 Series only supported 8gb max due to a limitation introduced by the iGPU. even windows laptops with the same core i5 had the same limitation for example the thinkpad T410. the rams are not 2x8gb they are a 8gb kit 2 x 4 GB he missread the label.
You should install Mac OS Ventura/Monterey on it, Monterey is very good even on a 13inch 2010 core2 duo MacBook. I have installed Ventura on 2011/2012 MacBook pros and it runs fantastic. Sonoma is very new and open core still needs to iron it out
I used opencore myself on a 2011 15” macbook pro and it's no joke now my daily driver laptop runs sonoma really well and being able to upgrade it to 16GB of ram and an SSD makes the system still feel really modern. ik i'm using the mac with the cursed gpu but mine still seems to work atm
Sonoma is just a bit goofy in general. Ever since upgrading to Sonoma on my AMD hackintosh when I sync my music to my iPod video it shows the album art completely messed up.
I agree. I installed Sonoma on a mid 2010 MacBook but I wasn't thrilled with the results or wanting to risk the possibility of the headaches involved with having to deal with future and as yet undiscoved bugs on a patched and unsupported computer running a new and largely untested Operating System version(alyhough I trust that frequently updating the legacy patcher software will likely remedy most issues going forward). I decided my best move at the present was to install OS Monterey because it has been well tested and is stable and will still receive security updates from Apple for some time.
The framerate on the video being low happens on all Macs without H.265 hardware decoding. If you replace these videos with H.264 encoded versions, then they play fine as I'm pretty sure every Mac since 2011 has got a decoder.
There were 2 times 4 GB RAM in that Macbook. It was an 8 GB upgrade kit consisting of 2 sticks, hence the labelling. You should have read the second line.

24:00 the real XP experience
The video screen savers are 4K250FPS so that's probably why it was struggling lol. I have a 2008 MacBook pro I'd like to try this on with the 8600MGT and 512 VRAM, I'd be interested in seeing how it handles Sonoma.
I run this exact laptop with MacOS Ventura, it is running quite well. I use it as a big dvd player at my treadmill and watch the occasional Netflix/Disney shows.
You won me over in 30 seconds... new sub
Yooo no way! I watch your videos!
try re doing the root patches and the default audio source sometimes changes try that also
@frokfrdk lol lots of people say that 😝 keep up the good work you’re about to pass me in subs 👍
5:46 got me questioning apple
that has nothing todo with apple it has todo with the limitation of the Intel CPU. the 1nd Gen core i5 Series only supported 8gb max due to a limitation introduced by the iGPU. even windows laptops with the same core i5 had the same limitation for example the thinkpad T410. the rams are not 2x8gb they are a 8gb kit 2 x 4 GB he missread the label.
You should install Mac OS Ventura/Monterey on it, Monterey is very good even on a 13inch 2010 core2 duo MacBook. I have installed Ventura on 2011/2012 MacBook pros and it runs fantastic. Sonoma is very new and open core still needs to iron it out
No 11" is the Smallest Macbook ever Made.
You'd think so, but that's just the screen size. In some dimentions the 12" MacBook is actually smaller than the 11" Air
MacOS Sequoia time
Watching this on my 2011 MBP 13' With Monterrey
This is a very true Michael mjd moment, he would be proud
you kinda remind me of dank pods, the editing and everything, anyways good video
Good job frokfrdk! Keep it up!
I'm pretty sure this dude watches Dankpods
RECOMMENDATION! Always unplug the battery when doing upgrades ^^
I love this kind of content as a dankpods viewer
24:41 flashbacks of computer viruses 😂😂😂😂
I also have a mac m2. I didn't even install this ridiculous version on it. I don't understand why you installed this on your old computer.
slight correction, the smallest Mac that apple made was actually the 11 inch MacBook Air.
In some dimensions the 12" MacBook is actually smaller than the 11" Air
@@frokfrdk but google says the 11 inch is the smallest lol, guess ya never know
Laptop inches are measured by the screen size, the 11" Air has thicker bezels than the 12" MB
Druaga1 called, he wants his ssd's back.
if mjd and dankpods had a baby that had the voice of Five Nights at 39
The framerate on the video being low happens on all Macs without H.265 hardware decoding. If you replace these videos with H.264 encoded versions, then they play fine as I'm pretty sure every Mac since 2011 has got a decoder.
mjd + dankpods energy
i have a 2012 macbook air which runs sonoma fine mostly due to the fact it supports metal
You mentioned drilling out screws.
You can get mini screw extractor set for approx £16 from the big A
Forcing macOS Sonoma onto it sound like a real lot of pain
The RAM installed was actually 8GB .. it says 8GB (2x4) kit... So you didn't really upgrade the RAM ;)
The screw sound is so ASMR lol.
You could always try this with a different ssd because those Kingston drives don’t have dram so they are sometimes slower than hdds! Great video!!
I love your videos man. Thank you for making them.
this video came just in time I literally just got a late 2009 iMac
There were 2 times 4 GB RAM in that Macbook. It was an 8 GB upgrade kit consisting of 2 sticks, hence the labelling. You should have read the second line.
yupppppp
got one of these with the i7 and the upgraded screen for free, has a pixel wide defect in the screen, i shoved 16 gb ran and a 512gb ssd and its the best laptop ive ever had!
seeing a mac boot into Windows 10 looks so cursed 😭😭
I wonder if my mid 2007 imac 20' would work
Gigantic Macbook but yet still has a tiny trackpad 😂😂😂
I just bought a 2012 13 inch MacBook on eBay with a dvd cd drive, hopefully it’s a retina and I’m gonna install Sonoma because it’s my first and probably only MacBook for a long time
i found that for ram, you have to use 2 different speed for both to work that's weird never seen that before
Your Mac model is either affected by the ram slot glitch where it only registers one stick or you have a bad ram stick/slot
Bros trying so hard to be like DankPods
thank you for finally showing what its actually like on non-metal macs.. i tried installing Monterey on my mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro and it wasn't awful (with max 8GB RAM and an SSD) but it got sooo hot, over 90* Celsius, and wasn't very quick. even after downgrading it back to El Capitan, it's still sooo slow 😭😭
might be good to redo the thermal paste and adjust the fan curve
I have a 2010 13" Macbook Pro, and it is still huge. I just upgraded to the 2019 13" macbook air (wasnt a great idea), and it is soooo much smaller
13:49 i'm NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT THINKED THIS HELL YEAH
This vid made me check if any of my laptops were hackintoshable and my 2012 lenovo is!
I collect old Macs. Used to do this but always hit problems. Now I just put Linux on and make it look like mac os and have a load of quick, nice to use Macbooks. Good video
I have four of the 2011 17" Macs. Running ventura and they work perfectly fine Stream live sports just as good as my M1 Max Mac
For the ram that's normally how it works. each slot is allotted a specific amount of ram
"it's just a video"
the video: 4K 240FPS... yeah a 2010 macbook can definitely run that.
I thought after you install OCL you also need to run a patch afterward?
I upgraded my 2018 MBA from Ventura to Sonoma about 2 months ago and even with that supported setup the Sonoma animation come in and out once in a while, so I am not going to go crazy trying to install Sonoma onto my MBP 2011. Just watching this video saves me the headaches and hours. Thanks.
