    I've come to realize that most 'complex' problems are just a series of simple solutions. in this case it was matching colours that saved our feature film 😅. What's a simple tip you've learned?

    Wow I think this is groundbreaking info for me. I think a lot of the time we could *feel out* the edit at the cost of time and trial and error but having a clear guideline like this will streamline that whole process.

    The colour coding is absolutely brilliant. Love the idea of being able to come out of the edit suite and look at the big picture, without any footage or images clouding the story. Well done as always sir!

    this is powerful info!! when you can visualize, feel, and touch a film outside of an editing software that's where you begin to experience an outside perspective which usually provides the clarity you needed.

    These are some really gold nuggets here. Any time I’ve tried to write or tell a story I’ve always just focused on the plot but never let emotion build or characters breathe and develop and I can understand why in films I like these character arcs have always been so pivotal to supplement that plot. So good!

    This was really helpful. I’ve honestly never thought about it like that in terms of too many emotional scenes or too many plot scenes in a row. But you’re right, that IS how you lose your audience. And you’re right, this applies to all forms of visual media. I’m gonna pay closer attention to that from now. Might have to go back over older work to see if I find the same thing happening there. Good stuff bro. Thanks a lot.

Every scene should take the story a little further don't you think? And then there is another thing: exposition. Ideally a few shots can combine all of these things within a scene right? What's your opinion about that?

    Hi Mark, thanks for your video’s. They are very insightful! Also this one. I was wondering. Might this have a relationship with Walter Murch’s Rule of 6. I’m trying to work out your approach according to the rule of six. Like this: if you cut, according to the rule of six, you have to prioritise cutting first for emotion and second for story, but if you cut too much for emotion and leave out story too many times in your prioritization your story falls flat.
    I’m just wondering wether or not you would have had kind of the same outcome if you would prioritise using The Rule of 6. You would have to consider emotion and story (and the other 4 of course). If so then your approach would be kind of a simplification of the Rule of 6. And I reaaaaalllly like simplification! Keep it up and thanks for your great work Mark!

    • @markbone
      @markbone  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah the rule of six is really preached by Walter. and it seems to work for him well. My brain isn't wired that way probably because I'm a bit more daft. i try to go a bit more off feel and I find this milanote system doesn't squelch the life and creativity of the film while still be systematic

      well... stress happens... if you're saying it's not okay to experience stress that just about disqualifies everyone in the human experience. The point i'm making is that I think it's okay to experience stress but what you do with it is where we can quantify what is okay or not okay ;)

    Milanote is great but their app sucks big time. NO way to work on your film when you only have your phone with you.
    i hope they improve that, the workflow on the desktop is just fantastic.

    One question: does my plot have to reflect the character's journey to the goal even in like short films, where the plot isn't so complex? And does the character even have to have a journey in shorter form videos?

    • @markbone
      @markbone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In short films there still should be a “want/desire” for the character but of course the journey will be shorter
