Talking head, usually it is just me so locking focus and setting everything up is easier than constantly moving and changing stuff by myself. When I have tried other styles and I ask them questions it distracts them or me so I did not hear what they said. Can we get a interview challenge?
@@captainxbengex007 ooo, Interview challenge.. that's interesting
@@markbone 1-5 minutes, using at least one style, include a behind the scenes photo / video and throw in a music, b-roll, particular shot or question requirement for entry.
The floating observer is new to me - I'll have to try that on my next interview - great tip Mark!
Cinema verite
Its stuff like this that's hard to find on TH-cam. Most channels are about gear and capitalism. You help people tell a story.
Thanks mate!
Agree, this is so much more valuable than another gear review or b roll tips
Yeah true
Totally agree! The most important tool in every craft is knowledge
2:31 - In the Moment Passive
4:28 - In the Moment Active
6:34 - Talking Head
9:19 - Voiceover
Super helpful and informational as always. I love showing folks these different styles and the reasons why, and how that can open up so many more options and creativity to a doc.
Mark Bone, you might just be one of the GOATs
I wish!!
So much value here. Appreciate that you don’t do into technical details and instead focus on use case and practicality
Thanks mate!!! Appreciate you seeing it this way!!
My journalism and filmmaking masters has been off since March due to Covid. I’ve learned so much more from your videos than the course these last few months so thank you man, it’s been really helpful!
So glad to hear! Thanks man. That's my hope with this channel, to spread as much quality doc teaching as a I can
Mark - came back to see this gem. It is so powerful and such a great asset to anyone filming interviews. Thanks for being such an amazing person in this space.
Soon I'm going to have the biggest project of my life - a documentary about a professional basketball player, about his life and legacy. This could make me. Excited, scared, full of confidence and doubt. But the only way of forward. You inspire me, with your advice, tips and knowledge. Thank you Mark
Wow thanks man! Go crush it on your next film!
The Imposter is one of the best FILMS not just documentaries ever made! Love the content & that you don't shy away from your faith Mark. Keep it up!
It’s so good!!
Agreed.
Saw it in cinema without knowing anything. It was quite an experience.
1. In the moment Passive
2. In the moment Active
3. Talking Head

Thanks mate!
Great content, man! Thank you!
Really cool tips!
Super helpful tips!
A channel like yours is hard to find. Thanks!
Thanks mark, its so good omg
We love active and in the moment interviews because they convey the emotion a scene so effectively! It's such a huge part of some styles of filmmaking that we love so much on TH-cam, like vlogs! Great videos as always Mark, you're always so informative and helpful
I like your style of teaching. Thank you ! I wanna make vlogumentaries, navigating my daily life during chaotic times. Left eye the rapper has a documentary and she did an in the moment passive interview with herself that is perfect for the confessional mtv y2k style I’m going for.
Again very good one Mark! Tip top
Great content Mark! Looking forward to your documentary course!

Such a great video dude. So helpful and informative. Thank you
Great information
Great video Mark!
I've shot so many interviews over the years in the various styles you mention and I am huge fan of that passive floating observer style. I love how Chefs Table or the Abstract series mixes this style with unique framing for talking heads.
I just had to shoot a two person, three camera interview last week during the Covid lock down with celebrity talent. NO ONE was allowed to be on set while the talent was on set so we were forced to set up three remote operated heads that were locked down on sticks. It all ended up working out great and I actually think that the lack of people on set allowed us to get a more authentic and warm conversation from the two talent.
Interesting times!
Shooting my first documentary over the weekend...thank you
Go kill it!!!!!!
Dude so amazing. Love this!
Thanks man!!

Thanks mate!!
I'm creating my first documentary and this was so useful. Thank you so much!
Nice one thank you, good way of explaining this stuff. Need to write some notes down now.
Thanks mate
great content
we are crazy about buying new gear, we are very often addicted to it instead we should learn how to tell a compelling story, great content!
Right on!
Thanks Mark, great content ! I'm preparing for a TH-cam video where I'll need to do a bit of interviews : that was really inspiring !
Nice video Mark. Thanks for taking the time to break this down. I like to use an interview technique which is probably somewhere between In The Moment Passive and Active where I get the person to carry out a task or activity relevant to what they do and the story and then i get them to talk about stuff whilst doing it. Not necessarily about what they’re doing but usually about bigger ideas that motivate them or reflecting on something in their life. So it’s probably a talking head but in the style of In the Moment. Keep making your great content
Love the idea of a hybrid between the genres
