Hi There, are you still using the 18-200 lens? ... I am looking to buy it because it fits my budget, but lot of people are talking trash about it... could you please advise. Thanks!
Bought this lens last week for my beater camera, an EOS 2000D. So far I love it. It's good enough for its price (177 EUR all in!!). Built quality is fine. Sharpness is acceptable (I shoot RAW) and AF seems to work ok (need some more testing to properly judge it). I have much more expensive lenses, but they don't render so much better images that justify the high prices. For occasional snapshots this lens blows every iPhone away.
I've just ordered one of this and I'm waiting to be delivered. Taking into consideration that now I'm using a kit lens (Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 III) with no stabilization I believe this lens is going to be a good upgrade for me. Hi tehere! New update. I've changed my camera also, Canon eos 77d, and I used my Tamron 18-200mm. I have good results with this lens for the moment.
@@roypronay08 honestly! At this moment I won't recommend it anymore. Te lens is not to bright and some times the images are not to sharp. If you want a long lens I will recommend 50 - 200 mm.
thanks much for the review, chris. the lens performs as expected, almost like the predecessor, 18-200 DI without VC from 2005, it wasn't useable really
Thanks for the video! I'm a bit late, haha. Retired builder in the us. Beautiful building! So on with this, I have often surmised that the reason lenses are not as sharp in the corners as the center, has to do with DOF and that the distance from the corners are greater from the camera than the center. I do realize optical engineers take this into consideration, but projection of a flat surface through a curved lens back to a flat film plane has a lot to do with math. By stopping down the lens, the depth of field is increased, as you know. I'm posting this to help new photographers understand a little more of the optical chain. Fortunately, as of this date 2024, most lens problems are taken care of by modern in camera processors and some great AI photo apps like sharpness and chromatic aberration. Some apps can make a very cheap lens look great with little knowledge by the user. Thanks again!
Very nicely review video for this lens, I couldn't think of anything else you could've missed mentioning ! I'm between the tamron Vs Nikkor 18-200. Since im a sharpness nut I think I'm leaning toward the Nikkor now.
As a photo novice, I am finding your reviews helpful and informative. I just wish that I had read this particular review before purchasing! This lens does seem 'soft' which I find quite frustrating. It seems to perform best in terms of sharpness with an aperture of F8 or F10 - even then not as good as my Fuji bridge camera. Until reading your review, I thought that maybe I had a faulty copy. I am now trying to decide if I should sell it and upgrade - or maybe it's still worth using it for shots where sharpness isn't so crtical. Any advice? Although not directly comparable, a friend lent me his cheap Tamron 70-300mm (macro) to try, which seems sharper at the same focal lengths than the 18-200. So I am wondering if it's the zoom factor of 11x for the 18-200mm that poses a limitation for overall sharpness? (the 70-300mm having a smaller zoom factor of just 4x ). Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Wish all affordable superzooms had the focus ring near the front of the lens...instead of near the rear. My Nikon 18-135 and Tamron 16-300 are "backwards".
The issue with this type of lens is lens sample variation, you can get two samples and get two very different results, I had two samples of the original Tamron 18-200 back in 2005, the first one was nice and sharp, the second was very soft, I recently got hold of a sample of the Tamron 18-200 VC and find it quite nice, not as sharp as some but definitely better then the one reviewed here...
You're probably imagining things when you say your sample was 'better' - test it properly and empirically, and then you'll know for sure. Either way, if Tamron's quality control is as bad as you're suggesting then...that's their problem!
Oh ok, the difference between samples that I've seen is HUGE, definitely not an imagination, even the manager of the store also noticed the differences between 3 examples of the Tamron 18-270, I've also noticed differences between samples of L series lenses, less then the differences between Tamron samples though......
Like I said, if their quality control is really that bad, then that's their problem, not mine. I'm not going to spends weeks and weeks sourcing out dozens of copies of the same camera lens to give people a probability about how sharp a lens they buy may or may not be. No lens reviewer has time for that - and certainly not me
Christopher... I keep searching your site, hoping for a review of the Tamron 18-200 Di VC III - i.e. the EF-M mount version. I keep getting to this video, however. I can't find a review of the EF-M version which surprises me as you seem to have tested every lens ever made. Do you think you will ever do the EF-M version?
Hey, I own Canon 200d Mk ii ... I am looking for an overall travel lens. I'm confused between this and Canon 18-135. Can you (Christopher) or anybody suggest which one should I go for? Im a little tight on budget.
I think the lens does a really good job, because you never zoom in, in the pictures when you looking at them. So the image quality isn't bad at all, you need learn to use the lens first 👍
How does it compare with those kit lens ? My nikkor 18-55 and 55-200 are giving somewhat ok picture quality on my nikon D3300. But find carrying them with me very difficult as a travel option. When i saw this lense i had great expectation, because of the low price as my budget is tight.

+GON HD There are loads of great macro lenses. I don't know about Nikon in general, but Tamron does a nice 90mm f/2.8 VC USD Macro, and Samyang have a nice manual focus 100mm macro lens
+Christopher Frost Photography thanks alot! my mama and papa (that's how I call them and 16 years old :)) will fly to Poland by the end of the month, I think that they will buy me the lens there...

Regarding the zoom ring getting loose, I had a Tamron 18-270mm before it met its end on some concrete from about 6 foot up...anyway zoom creep was really significant after around 6 months. For the price though, I was very happy with it even though us Sony users do not get the in-lens V-C option since a-mount bodies have their own stabiliser. I'm now using the 16-300mm and loving it! Its quite an upgrade over the 18-270mm in terms of both build and image quality.
I plan to buy the Tamron 18- 200mm lens because it' s the cheapest of the category . But some people say its autofocus is slow , what do you think ? thanks for answering .
i have a kit lens on a nikon d5200 , nikor 18-55 vr2and i need a litle more .the camera is ok , but the lens ... not quite .i don`t afford 2 , like .. sigma 17-50/2.8 and the second one , i need just one but for great sharp pictures .advices ?
Which could be a better option for a beginner photographer, Buying an 18-200 mm lens or buying a 70-300 mm lens along with a 0.43x wide-angle zoom lens attachment? Consider the budget to be limited.
Dear Sir, I am currently looking for an all purpose lens like this for my APS-C DX Nikon D5300 and thus have come across this video. I have a question however. I have this Tamron 18-200 and the Nikkor 18-140g lens on my radar. Which would be a better choice. Will it be the TAMRON which is providing a better reach at 200mm at the longer end or the Nikon one which I presume is better in terms of sharpness and image quality ? If that is the case , how far does this Tamron lie behind the Nikkor lens in terms of image quality ?
I have been looking for an all rounder lens for my Canon SL3. I think Canons 18-135 would be a better choice. The auto focusing is instant and silent. You are losing out on a bit of zoom, but I think 135mm is still a pretty long zoom rang. It is also like $200 more but I guess you're paying more for the brand and the USM tech.
hi, i am going to buy a D5600. but they have 18-55mm+55-200mm and 18-200mm lens.so what do you think.which one i should buy.which with 18-55mm and 55-200mm or one with the 18-200mm? which one will be more picture quality?
Cindy Ellis You've probably got a lens by now but even so, consider the Tamron 70-300 VC lens. The Vibration Compensation is superb the way it grabs and holds the subject in the viewfinder. It is sharp and so far I haven't seen any chromatic aberration. An excellent lens.
why i came across with this video after i bought tamron 18-200...?? you were right, this lens i already dissapointed after just couple of use... i am newbie in dslr world, choosing the right/best lens is quite hard for me... plus lens price in my country is so expensive... thanks for the videos, i learn a lot.. can you tell me what kind of macro zoom lens that is best in current market?? coz im enjoy taking picture with zooming far, espeecially taking picture of bird flying or taking picture of bees flying without getting close... buying tamron 18-200 is a huge mistake...
Hey Chris hope you are well. I have Canon 750D and I use 18-55mm Lens that came with camera I'm thinking of upgrading to new Lens I am really confused what Lens should I go for. I don't take use camera that often but I do take a lot of picture during outing. I was wondering if you have any recommendations. I don't want to spend big money. Sir need your opinion about nikon 55-200/afp 70-300/ or 55-300 ... I have nikon d3400 i only have the kit lens so what should be my next by your opinion?
Newegg had this on sale with a Nikon mount for $99 (now sold out, sorry) so I snagged it. I hope it's better or at least as good as my kit lens, so I can leave it in the closet and my 55-200mm at home unless I know I'm shooting only at 200mm, then use my 35mm prime lens when I want the best image quality close up. I'm by no means a pro photographer obviously. That said I'd probably not have bought it if it was $250, but for $99 with free shipping it was hard to pass up.
I have the D5300 and looking for that 18-200 range... I keep hearing the picture quality is not that good... I'm not sure what the best option is under $400 for around this range. I was looking at Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 VC PZD but I'm assuming the picture quality would be the same and worse beyond 200mm. is Nikon Nikkor 18-200mm F/3.5-5.6 G Aspherical ED IF DX AF-S VR the better choice for overall better PQ/sharpness? argghh!!!
Can u help me im getting a d7100 body NEW for 700$ can u suggest me a good all around lens for 150 $ ? i saw this Tamron AF 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] MACRO A14 for Nikon DX Is this good for normal wideangle shots also bird shooting ? im just starting out
Hi Chris, I’m just a new beginner just bought a Canon SL2 / 200D - want to buy an all in one lens Tamron 18-200 or sigma 18-200 ? Both your videos seems not encouraging, any final or other suggestions?
Hello Chris I have a Canon 18-135 mm lens I use on my 60D I am looking for a lens with an equivalent focal range (28-216mm) for use on a 5D is there anything you could recommend?
Nothing I can seriously recommend except the Canon 24-105 f/4 IS USM 'L'. I haven't really tried anything with much more zoom range on full-frame, except the Canon 28-135 and I didn't really like it
Hey! Im planning on picking up the Sony A7s II tomorrow and i am still looking for an lens. I dont want to blow another 1000 for a lens. Will this lens be a good choice?
You can't be serious...if you're joking then that's very funny, if you're not, then you need to put the brakes on everything and look at what lens options you have for that particular camera

why i came across with this video after i bought tamron 18-200...?? you were right, this lens i already dissapointed after just couple of use... i am newbie in dslr world, choosing the right/best lens is quite hard for me... plus lens price in my country is so expensive... thanks for the videos, i learn a lot..
can you tell me what kind of macro zoom lens that is best in current market?? coz im enjoy taking picture with zooming far, espeecially taking picture of bird flying or taking picture of bees flying without getting close...
buying tamron 18-200 is a huge mistake...
The Tamron 18-400 can get really close and at f/8 the image quality is okay
Great video, excellent voice, easily understandable content, thanks !
is that good for moon shots ?
Which zoom lens do you recommend for street photography? I have a 50MM for portraits I just need a nice zoom to replace the 18-55MM on my Canon T6.
A 70-200mm f/4 lens might be nice
Hi, could you kindly do a comparison between this and it's predecessor the A14 version please? Thank you.
Any lens that can be used for all Purposes please help me thanks
Take a look at my video about upgrading your kit lens, or my 18 low-budget lenses video.
Hey Christopher, Tamron released the 18-400mm ultra-zoom lens last year. Do you have any thoughts on that? Are you planning on reviewing it? Thanks!
I do indeed plan on reviewing it in the next month or two
Sir need your opinion about nikon 55-200/afp 70-300/ or 55-300 ... I have nikon d3400 i only have the kit lens so what should be my next by your opinion?
I've never tried any Nikon lenses
Newegg had this on sale with a Nikon mount for $99 (now sold out, sorry) so I snagged it. I hope it's better or at least as good as my kit lens, so I can leave it in the closet and my 55-200mm at home unless I know I'm shooting only at 200mm, then use my 35mm prime lens when I want the best image quality close up. I'm by no means a pro photographer obviously.
That said I'd probably not have bought it if it was $250, but for $99 with free shipping it was hard to pass up.
Hey! Which lens would you recommend between this and the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM for canon eos 550d?
They're different kinds of lenses. So it depends if you want a superzoom lens or a telephoto zoom lens
Can I ask what bayonet does this lens use??
I have the D5300 and looking for that 18-200 range... I keep hearing the picture quality is not that good... I'm not sure what the best option is under $400 for around this range. I was looking at Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 VC PZD but I'm assuming the picture quality would be the same and worse beyond 200mm. is Nikon Nikkor 18-200mm F/3.5-5.6 G Aspherical ED IF DX AF-S VR the better choice for overall better PQ/sharpness? argghh!!!
Ni idea - I don't don't test Nikon lens I'm afraid
Can u help me im getting a d7100 body NEW for 700$ can u suggest me a good all around lens for 150 $ ? i saw this
Tamron AF 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] MACRO A14 for Nikon DX
Is this good for normal wideangle shots also bird shooting ? im just starting out
+Sky Walker Watch this video, and you'll see!
Hi Chris, I’m just a new beginner just bought a Canon SL2 / 200D - want to buy an all in one lens Tamron 18-200 or sigma 18-200 ? Both your videos seems not encouraging, any final or other suggestions?
I'd get the Canon 18-135 STM or 15-85mm USM
You can't be serious...if you're joking then that's very funny, if you're not, then you need to put the brakes on everything and look at what lens options you have for that particular camera
i have a question does tamron 18-200 tend to have better image quality than prime lens?
no
Hey Chris, nice review! I just wanna ask if the lens comes with the lens hood or not. Thx
given that this is a aps-c lens, is this 18mm on aps-c really 18mm or 28mm?
If you are using a Canon APS-C, then you always, always, always, multiply the focal length by 1.6x. 18mm x 1.6 = 28.8mm
+Christopher Frost Photography,
i am new in photography sir. i just want to ask if this lense is compatible with canon 700d..and which is better sir this 18-200mm or the canon 55-250mm is stm for everyday..plss do reply sir thanks in advance..
+Jay Ar Pasion All Canon mount lenses made since 1987 will work on your Canon APS-C Digital SLR camera, except EF-M lenses
is working with EOS 4000D camera?
hi christopher , nice review, i love it. i a little bit confuse to buy a lens. what do you think about canon 18-135mm IS ( not STM ) is a good lens for any time day and night ? tq for your help :)
+Rangga Saputra Take a look at my review. The image stabilization will help you at night time
Hi Chris! For AF, is it more noisy than Sigma 18-200mm? or better? Thank in advance!
Hmm, I can't remember - take a look at my review of the Sigma 18-200 :-)
@@christopherfrost With external microphone, it could help to reduce the noise?
@@momsokvisal6382 Only a little I'm afraid
@@christopherfrost Thank you!
I thought I had gone mad when my memory told me this video had shown up in my feed. I'm guessing now that you removed it and reposted it for some reason.
Where is your 60D and 6D?
Nice review. Thank you.
Hi I am using canon 200d ii 250 sl3,
Is that suitable for the camera??
Yup if you get the Canon version
This is a great lens and less expensive than the Nikon and Canon equivalent.
I'm looking to get the Tamron 18-270 for my Nikon D5500. The 16-300 is tempting though but twice a much.
Is this lense good for wildlife photography?
why was it discontinued?
I really like the 100D and I will buy one, maybe used, to replace my 600D at some point! :D
I have Canon M100. Can I mount this with an EF to EOS M adapter?
Thanks for the review.
Yup
would this lens be enough to replace canon kit lens ef18-55 and the efs 55-250
+2renered Watch the review and you'll see how good this lens is.
Thank you for your review. I'm new to DSLR photography and this video made me avoid the this Tamron lens and consider other options. :)
Hi every one
Hesitating between getting this lens as a travel lens to buy or keeping my kit lens and investing on the tamron 70-300 VC USD.
witch one delivers better picture quality all across the range, autofocus, noise ?
thanks.
+shokrix Forget them both. Go for the Canon 55-250 STM to go with your kit lens
Christopher Frost Photography Thanks for quick replay, but I am a Nikon shooter, is the Nikkor 55-250 a good value lens for me. By the way, I am with limited budget :D .
Thanks again Christ !
+shokrix 55 200 is quite good for its price. I had the 55 300, and it served me well. af was slow on the d3100 though at 300mm
