    Some trivia:
    >this game was developed by the same studio as Dead Space, which was unfortunately shut down by EA in 2017
    >During the fight with Lucifer, his junk is hanging out, it even has its own physics. The developers actually toyed with the idea of including a cheat code that made it bigger the more you hit him lmao
    >The cross that Dante stitches to his chest contains a chronicle of all his sins, which is why it falls off on his own when he finally redeems himself, even though he still has all of purgatory to go through
    >The animated film based on this game (Dante's Inferno: An Animated Epic) has a different animation studio for each circle of hell
    >The marketing campaign for this game was ridiculous, from offering $6.66 discounts on pre-orders to a Facebook app that let you condemn your friends to an eternity of "succubus castration".
    >Amazing cast for both the game and the movie, including Mark Hamill, Graham McTavish and Steve Blum.

Not included here is the premiere trailer, which is fine because it contains an amazingly appropriate (and copywritten) song. But y'all should def check that too, if on your own time.

    The game is a lot like Silent Hill in that every single thing is a metaphor or symbolism. It centers around Dante descending through the rings of Hell, each representing a different sin, many of which Dante himself committed while on the crusades. His own lust is the reason his wife is killed and sentenced to Hell in the first place, he is guided by Vergil and goes through the layers of Hell often times facing his own crimes and fighting some pretty epic bosses, oft based on historical figures like Cleopatra, Marc Antony, and King Minos. Each layer of hell had it's own enemies too, which was really cool to see from fighting unbaptized babies to lucifer himself.

  • @ChaosArdor

    This was such a good game. Brutally hard but it did a great depiction of hell and portraying the various circles focused around certain sins of man. This was one of those games I had to buy in secret and keep my parents from knowing about just because of the overall themes. But it's definitely worth a play.
    Also, the book of Dante's Inferno is a complete nightmare to read since its all just a really big and long poem of old english. But it's also one I couldn't put down once I started.

  • @Spindler2007
    @Spindler2007 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    When I first saw the trailer for Dante's Inferno, I really wanted to play this game and I'm glad I did when it finally came out as the game developers did a really good job fleshing out each circle of Hell as they are described in the poem. One of my favourites has to be Gluttony as the landscape is nothing but flesh, guts and teeth.
    I also like how each circle is literally made out of souls of the damned which makes Hell in this game more horrifying and disturbing. One of the most disturbing moments for me has to be in Limbo when you enter a room where you fight unbaptised babies and you can hear these ghostly echoes of crying babies in the background after the fight which is pretty haunting.
    It's a pity this game never got a sequel as it was slated for being a God of War clone sometime after it's release.

Really good, fun game though with fantastic artwork and visuals, overall an interesting take on a classic piece of literature that also inspired Devil May Cry, which, along with God of War, in turn inspired the gameplay and presentation of this. So, there is a lot you can unpack with this game lore wise. Infact the game has a system where your choices can get you a different ending. But yeah this Dante was not squeaky clean morals wise. He did some bad things as a crusader. And thought because the priest said it was OK that there would be no consequence.
    The lore of Dante's inferno has some good video reviews and discussions about what might truly be going on in the game. Especially since it draws heavily from the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. There is a lot of hellish horror in the game. The game mechanics were somewhat repetitive and lost their charm to some later in the game but the story was the main thing I liked about it.

    I loved this game and it got me to read all 3 poems from the real Dante. The Divine Comedy is truly a work of art. Inferno is extremely haunting and grotesque but oddly intriguing. And obviously once you get to Paradiso, it sounds like a peaceful place. The game did take liberties but it more or less gives the same feelings the book does and follows the same path Dante in the story takes, a journey through the 9 circles of Hell itself.

    As someone who owns and has played through the game many times, I can attest to how enjoyable and captivating the story of this game is. For a little context, the game's story takes place during the crusades, and the main character is named after the famous poet who wrote the Divine Comedy, a 3-part series, the part (Inferno) of which this game is based on. Dante's character is a crusader who joined the crusades shortly before he was supposed to be wed to his lover, Beatrice, and to whom he pledged an oath of fealty shortly before his departure.
    As is with many wars, Dante wound up doing some fairly heinous stuff under the false belief that any actions the crusaders took would be forgiven (a lie they were told by a cardinal of the Catholic church). One of these actions included sleeping w/ a woman who was one of the prisoners mentioned at the beginning, in exchange for freeing her & her brother. This man is the who is seen stabbing Dante in the back, and murdering Dante's father & Beatrice. If you want to see more, I'd highly recommend watching (and maybe reacting, just saying) to a cutscene compilation of the game found here on YT:

  • @morrisonscott1139

    A few things that I'd change about Dante's inferno is that I'd merge the interact button with the grab button, and the interact button would be button that switches between holy style and unholy style. Which means that with unholy style, we'd still have the unholy scythe moves but the cross would have unholy powers. In holy style, the cross has its usual holy moves but the scythe is blessed and has holy powers as well. The extensions of health, mana, redemption meter, relic slots and grab mechanic will be placed in the middle. I personally imagine DI having three endings after providing an option to punish or absolve Lucifer, the third option to re-imprison him. If Lucifer's re-imprisoned, than the ending we got will be the same, if he's punished than Dante will be forced to be the new king of hell, or if he's absolved than all of hell will begin to crumble, all souls get set free and only purgatory and heaven will be left. However, sin, conflict and death will still always exist in reality.

  • @giorgioguolo7196

    For context this game is based around Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy , one of the important literaly pieces in italian history. Dante himself is the most revered writer in the country, almost like Shakespear is in the english speaking world, and his opera is the fundation of modern italian.
    Dante from Devil May Cry is based on him and his brother, Vergil, is named after the roman poet who inspired the poet and appears in the Divine Comedy as a guide trough hell and purgatory.
    Overly Sarcastic Productions has a pretty good video on the guy for english speakers.

  • @ericmartin8870
    @ericmartin8870 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah for some reason this wasn't just trailers. This lineup looks like it started with the original cinematic trailer and ended with what I'm now understanding is a fan-made trailer attempting to drum up support for a sequel. The stuff in the middle was just all of the high resolution cinematic cutscenes (most of the in-game stuff was rendered with the in-game graphics or used a very different animation style).
    That said, I did really love this game when it came out. It followed the same sort of hack and slash adventure style as the early God of War games (everything before 2018's shift in direction) and Devil May Cry/BloodRayne etc. Loosely based on The Divine Comedy (at least, the first book of it), it followed the tale of Dante as he came home from the ravages of the Crusade to find his home ripped apart and family slain. Lucifer's shadow was there to claim the soul of Dante's wife Beatrice, who'd been damned by a wager she'd made in good faith defending her husband's name from Lucifer's insistence that Dante was no more virtuous than the rest of the soldiers of the war. The full truth and weight of Dante's sins are explored as he chases Beatrice's soul through each circle of Hell and learns about all of the sins of Man and himself.
    As one may expect from the subject matter, it was by FAR the most mature game of its type in both general concepts and the graphic nature of the content. The 2nd circle of Hell, Lust, was adorned with EXTREMELY graphic sexual imagery (picture doorways built to look like ONE set of naughtybits surrounded by pillars shaped like the OTHER type of naughty bits lol). As such, it's not the kind of game that got a lot of love from anyone but the most mature-minded gamers and was often held up as an example of how awful video games were by the people who took stances against them. Though it has a fanbase for sure (myself included), it had too much controversy and didn't quite make enough of a positive impact to end up getting the two sequels it was intended to (quite a shame, given that while it was a little similar to other games of its action genre, it was overall a very unique and enjoyable experience).
    I think the story is compelling enough and the imagery cool enough that you guys would probably enjoy a run through the main cinematics and story highlights similar to what you're doing with DMC3, but I imagine it's PROBABLY not the kind of content you want slapped all over your channel. Hoo-has and dingalings don't do well on TH-cam and while that's only select portions of the game, the extreme violence throughout would likely not fare much better for you guys. So if you wanted to check it out, it'd probably be an "on your own time" kinda thing or something that would only end up being available to Patrons to avoid getting hassled by TH-cam.
    Regardless, I'm glad you got to check out what you did. Hopefully Lucifer's wing-wang won't get you any flak from TH-cam in that last big cutscene lol (at least it's fuzzy and easy to miss in the super hi-resolution cinematic, fighting him during his bossfight was difficult more because that thing was distracting as all Hell as it swung around like mad during the combat lololol).

    • @DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames
      @DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We didn’t even notice that during the Lucifer fight 😂 and we were watching it on a big screen TV as well 🤗 Wonder if this game would fare better today given how much gaming has grown and changed over the last decade 🤔

      But yeah I've been curious about that myself. On one hand, things HAVE come a long way...but it's pretty gratuitous, and we're kinda circling back around to "anything I find inappropriate is UNACCEPTABLE" lol. I can only imagine what the Twitter warriors would say if this were to be a more current thing lol.
      Whatever the case, I'm glad we did end up getting it at all. I had a lot of fun the few times I played through it. Lot of really cool enemy designs and a few interesting ideas.

    For the uninformed Dante's Inferno is based off the 1,400 page book called The Divine Comedy. The game is only the 1st part of 3. Dante travels through the Inferno which is Hell, the second part is Purgatorio which is Purgatory, and the final part of his journey is through Paradisio or Heaven. If you don't want to watch all the cinematics or play the game there is a Dante's Inferno movie which was animated by a whole bunch of different animators and it's pretty good, it's a little jarring with how often the style changes in each major sequence but that was kinda the point.

    in the game Dante stiches that cloth cross onto himself as part of penance for his actions done in the crusade but i prefer the animated movies version were he returns in his armor and its a pack of demons that strip his chainmail from him and stitch it on him as he falls to hell. in the game each time Dante faces a boss or reaches a new circle of hell there is a cutscene which shows the cloth is a tapestry of his life and the parts relating to current sin starts to move and playout what he did. - seems more fitting that the demons of hell would know his sins better then him and seek to remind and torment him

    I never played Dante's Inferno. But it reminds me of Castlevania Lords of Shadow. And i really enjoyed playing as Dracula in Lords of Shadow 2. The final battle was epic. Darcula vs Satan above the clouds on earth. It was almost at space. At the end they fall to the ground with Dracula the victor.
    That was a really fun game to play. Because i really like Dracula. But one of the hardest games i ever played. And believe me games are so easy to me on hardest. And i always play on hardest from the start.
    The thing about Lords of Shadow being hard. Is all thanks to the different combinations you need to remember how and when to use. And some foes are just immune to some combo. And only little combos work on them. The complexity of combos is the main issue. But theres a training room, or was it a challenge room? I used it for training 😅
    You already saw the trailer of it. So you know what i'm talking about. Come to think of it. Maybe because i started on hardest difficulty that it was hard to beat... But then a new difficulty came after i finished the game🤣

    The game, as I'm sure you've already surmised, is about traversing the 9 circles of Hell itself, which Dante has severe connections to every single one of them, through him and the people he was once close to, such as Greed, Lust, and even Suicide.
    To be honest, this game, along with Dead Space, had a hand in me (peacefully) leaving the Catholic faith by teaching me that even those who are revered can become corrupted and swayed.

    Love this game. Really wish it would at least be playable on PS Now. The o ly way I'm able to play it is on my PS3. Would love to see this title get a true 4k makeover though to play on the PS5. Fun fact: The Divine Edition of this game actually had as an option the poem by Dante Alighieri. My nephew hated reading when he was young, but loved movies and video games. Helped him learn to read by turning subtitles on games and movies. I remember that he enjoyed parts of the Divine Comedy (Inferno in this case), because he said it was "a scary story" (which it is), but he never got up not even to go to the bathroom when we were reading together because it fascinated him.

    I'm sure a lot of people mentioned this, but this is based off the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri finish in 1320 a year before the man died. It was pretty much just about him journeying through hell, purgatory, and heaven. It set up how most people depict hell in fiction. Kind of funny though, there wasn't much more to it than him touring in the original poem, and he wasn't a fighter he was a poet who really did just get lost (metophoicly) but I guess that would be boring from a game perspective.
    The game felt like it was suppose to be a trilogy but the game did pretty average, didn't review well and it's EA so it's dead forever. EA the true devil.

    The art design was amazing, and it played like the first 3 god of wars, so it played well. But the advertising campaign was both esoteric, not even saying what it's advertising, and kind of gross.
    They sent "7 deadly sins" boxes to people. So the wrath box had bloody, chopped meat. The lust box they sent journalists blood smeared, severed rubber tits, etc. It kinda freaked people out, so no one reviewed it favorably, despite it being actually good.

    16:30 Sorry to burst your optimistic bubbles, but Dante is no hero. He's not even a good person as far as i'm concerned. He openly and gleefully committed war crimes. The Bishops and Priests who sent them "absolved" them of all sins they would commit in the name of their "holy" crusade, but it's obviously meant to be read as corrupt spiritual leaders goading the templars into perpetrating genocide.
    Not that Dante shied away from all the killing. Or bargaining with a woman to have her husband released.
    +1 for looking for the good in people, though. Good vibes and well wishes. Thanks for bringing out Dante's Inferno. This was a great gaming experience for me and many others, but you may want to pull out now. Shit will get crazier in quite uncomfortable ways.
