This film is based on the ancient story of Dante's Inferno I think taken from the Divine Comedy. Having watched this movie myself, it is pretty cool and good action and design. The story itself is generally taking personal responsibility and facing the unknown consequences of one's own actions. It is also a test of character. Dante could have yielded or failed at any of the circles, especially the last of fraud and betrayal.
Well, you know what they say. First step to recovery is to admit there's a problem. Takes an even bigger step to admin wrongdoing. (Pride and all that.)

This story kinda proves how arrogant and ignorant a person can be when they think that they're always right. The MC did so many bad things, but thought that true his believe he was in the right.
It also shows the flaws of good and evil and of religion's ways. Dante asked why his friend was down there when they did a good thing for god. Only for his friend to say No it's the opposite, he doesn't condone senseless violence. Also the priest saying it's ok for him as an exception to have sex and wouldn't be cheating. When by common sense no it is cheating. It shows the big flaws and paradox of religious doctrine. Where they claim what's good, yet they preach and teach the opposite and act upon it. Turning good people bad by false deception and lies. And they get punished for someone else's fault that they couldn't help. Children are extremely naive and easily manipulated but religion is absolutely objective and doesn't care about context or circumstance. Just see the fetus in hell, an unborn child in hell.
@@richardhicks5031 exactly "religion has tainted them" but the Bible it's self remains holy. There are thousands of ancient manuscripts that line up with 99% accuracy around the world that line up with the Bible. So it's not the Bible, it's religion that is bad and goes against God

Sad it couldn't depict the struggle to even have something like the abstract concept of hell. The best equivalent against hell is Crime And Punishment. Where his sentence and torture doesn't do anything compared to the personal guilt and misery he feels for what he's done. Punishment and repenting in the form of physical pain and torture is extremely naive surface level compared to something as simple as isolation or rejection. Or how some can be driven to madness, loosing conscious thought and becoming less than animal in mind and behavior. Many indie games today do this, something Silent Hill 2 did the best by having not the physical pain or struggle but the imagery and reminding of the thing he regrets the most and causes him personal pain.
There are some differences with the game. Cleopatra and Marcus Antonius are the dual Boss from the second circle, for example, but they aren't in the film ( at least, they aren't in the resume). Dante already knew he commited all these crimes, because he sew himself the cross on his chest, when he understood the redemption from the holy crusade was a lie and nothing would be pardonned ... There was also a twist: he died before returning home, stabbed by the same guy who would kill his relatives . That's the reason why the Death itself came to reclame his soul ( first boss battle very early in the game), permiting him to kill it and use its Scythe. Beatrice's Cross was a range weapon not just a quest item. There were no real allusion to Dante's crimes, so the whole part with his crusader's pals wasn't in the game ( at least, not in my memories, perhaps I forgot). And there was a DLC ( dark forest), a bit strange, where the reason why some guy traveled to Italia just to kill Dante's family was revealed : The woman who offered herself to Dante said she did it to save her life and the life of the guy she called her brother ( Dante's anime is worse than his game's counterpart, because he openly cucked a guy, and still thought he didn't do anything wrong. At least the game's one "just" thought God could make an exception on his fidelity's oath because it was an holy crusade and because it was a payment to release people) . But in the DLC, when seemingly reaching the guy, he told the truth : she wasn't his sister, but his wife. It was an hidden information, not a clear thing like in the film.
