There truly are no words for this unimaginable event. I am not a Jew but my husband converted to Conservative Judaism about five years ago and since them I have developed a profound love and respect for the Jewish people. My heart aches for Israel and for the Jewish people across the world who are being persecuted. It has astounded many of us at the overwhelming antisemitism we are witnessing. One thing I remain troubled by is Melanie Phillips's comment, circa "we gave rhe world civilisation".
1. This is highly contestable. It is ill judged and unnecessary. The perils of "giving morality [civilisation] to the world" is dramatically explored by George Steiner in Portage to San Christobal, and look out for the AH defence.
2. It is both ignorant and insulting to other ancient civilisations. You don't 'win' by claiming this No.1 spot, because in 2023, anyone will retort "so what?"
3. The mythos and theology can reinforce a strong sense of identity and continuity. But straying into some hermetically sealed sense of purpose, strikes me as hubristic.
4. Witnessing the UN Gen Assembly shows that Israel is at the centre of the emerging schism in global politics, just when it needs not to be.
5. Countries, like communities, are constantly challenged by events. Their responses have to be pragmatic, tactical and strategic. I worry constantly about the global rise in anti-Jewish hate, and hope with all my heart, that we all find a way through.

Different topic but I see Chomsky in a completely different light since the Putin regime's invasion of Ukraine. This is a topic about which I know a lot. Chomsky's understanding of Russian history, Putin and his entourage, the regime's aims and methods is actually shockingly superficial and what he does know he has seriously misunderstood. And yet he talks at length in public as though he were an authority. It made me realise to what an extent people like him do this and we don't challenge them enough.

I believe there's a new organisation called British Friends of Israel.
Sombre times met with great humility and not a little generosity. A non Jew I am with Ms Phillips all the way. Jews first the rest of the west next. Israel was telling enough popular with some on the left when it was in black and white and Israelis wore ex-British Army 'shorts' and had nothing but self belief; now it is successful and that to the contemeporay left is enough to cheer on the murder of Jewish children. I never thought I would live long enough to see this. I fear for the future of my (and your) country.
I'm a retired Harvard prof living in inland California: I did all my postgrad studies in England, for five years in the late 1970s. Britain was mostly a decent place then, but SOAS was vile. My Dad had many relatives in north London and I always spent Shabbat and holidays with those infinitely kind, hospitable, warm people. American academia is hell. I lived that hell. But I still feel terrible about what the British Jewish community is going through. Absolutely terrible. I'm with you. Love from beyond the sea.

Their part was the miraculous victory in the war that broke out after the United Nations won a majority vote on independence for a Jewish State.

This is a very typical and ignorant response. To look at events from 1948 and blame Israel for Palestinian grievances. You really need to go back in time and look at earlier history, including the British part in this post 1917.
Are you aware to the fact that Israel totally withdrawn from the Gaza strip almost twenty years ago? Gaza. Could there heaven by now. Had they been good neighbours, I asure you both Israel and Gaza would have an economic boom. But the choice of the people of Gaza was to invest in weapon and tunnel (which, btw, protect o ly hamas, not civilians). So, I don't see your point, AT ALL. Do you even know that some of the poeple murdered in the Israeli side dedicated their lives to drive Gazan people to hospitals in Israel. Because they had cancer that couldn't be treated in Gaza hospitals ( that are actually weapon warehouses). Israel was generous enough to host those patients, out if good will. Now those people that devoted their lives to escort Palestinians to hospitals are buried deep in the ground.

I honestly don't think that the Jewish population has suffered as much as the Muslim population in regard to racism . It's only been around three months since October 7th, yet Muslims have had to suffer over 20 years of racism since 9/11.
And while the London centric press always come to Jews living in London , my Jewish friends have said that nobody has said anything to them here in Liverpool . And while racism in all it's forms should be fought against , one has to observe as to how quiet the Jewish community has been as to the growth of Eugenic fascism in eastern Europe especially Ukraine.

"are now partakers of that promise by faith" Ephesians 2:12-14.

Norman Finkelstein pulled that book apart inch by inch exposing it as a fraud. Peters went to ground and had nothing to say in her defence.

But when will that happen? Will it ever happen before wars will continue to destroy most of the incredible human achievements? As a first step, every human irrespective of their birth or assumed religion, should respect the belief of every human, just as one accepts some have specific individual passions for sports, music, education, foods, beverages and, other interest. In any event, being born into a specific religion does not necessarily make one a member of the family religion, with mixed marriages and IVF births. With over 250 recognised religions, religious conflicts make no logical sense. Live and let live. We are all humans and need to strive for a peaceful world community aiming for a true heaven on our fragile planet.
