I love my Surface Pro's kickstand and Type Cover even more now. I'm just so disappointed that Windows 10 experience in tablet mode is so far behind iPadOS
Having used the Surface for a couple of years before I switched to an iPad last year I have to agree. It's the subtle things but they make a huge difference from the usability standpoint. Surface as a tablet makes very little sense, it was almost painful to use it, especially compared to how it used to work with Windows 8 which was much more touch-friendly.
Why is it that watching Dieter review any device is such a joy whether you like the product or not. Always asking the right question to make the viewer think for themselves. Stellar review!!!
Apple designed it this way because the floating effect is a major flex. Apple is banking in this keyboard popularizing iPad with looks rather than versatility.
Guillermo Lopez I agree that it’s meant to look good, over complete practicality but I don’t think people are going to spend over a £1000 minimum on such a device to flex in public. Especially to flex and not to actually use it for work. It’s not the same as AirPods. And the other guys right, the iPad is the best (really only) tablet on the market anyway, so it doesn’t exactly need a new PR scheme to make it more mainstream.
I agree. On Logitech’s keyboard, theres a place to store the Apple Pencil, you could flatten the thing so you could write easily. With this case it seemed like they didn’t take the Apple Pencil into any consideration.

The magic keyboard is perfect for what I use my iPad for. I travel a lot for a living. I’m usually gone for about 20-24 days out of the month. The versatility of the iPad is ideal for someone that’s on the go a lot and the keyboard is perfect for someone like me who hates typing on a large touch screen. It serves as a stand for laying on the hotel bed while I watch a movie, it also affords the ability to protect your iPad while it’s in your bag and actively traveling. I love the feel of the iPad without a case too so the ability to just pick up the iPad without having to snap off a case is amazing. Idk…it just made sense for me to buy it. Definitely well worth the money.

I think the device becomes interesting when you look at the limitations built into this device - rather than think of it as an iPad that acquires laptop elements, I think the Magic keyboard makes the iPad into a reliable laptop that can "break out" into an iPad whenever necessary. For example, I could use it as my laptop to get through e-mails and edit documents, between meetings with clients where I break-out the iPad from its base to give an interactive slideshow, or sketch a process/vision with them in a more personal way than I could with a laptop. Yeah, so if you want to start drawing or something, you have to take it off the stand and risk scratching it on a table or something. You can, of course, attach a Smart Folio cover whenever you want to use it as a tablet, but that's not only expensive and inconvenient, but it also means you have to carry two things with you...
I was pretty excited to get the magic keyboard, but just today I bought the smart keyboard folio instead. Use the Ipad in tablet mode all the time, quickly flipping the keyboard around the back and front whenever I want to write something like browsing the web e.t.c. Big deal breaker for me not being able to flip the keyboard all the way around on the new magic one so I had to pass.
It is good that Dieter had a Surface device nearby to quickly compare the hardware. Surface devices' mechanism (kickstand+keyboard) is more viable I would say
I truly appreciate the unbiased review. I am having a very difficult time justifying paying that type of money, especially when my end goal would be to force my iPad (running toyOS) to be a real laptop (I know how powerful the iPad processing power is, but I find iOS inadequate for real tasks). I must admit that the thing is sweet looking.
I don't leave many comments, but I just watched a video review for a keyboard...a keyboard. Plus, I don't even own an iPad Pro!!! 😁 That is how good this review and reviewer was. Excellent job 👍
I have the magic keyboard coming as soon as it’s back in stock and I can’t wait. But my biggest question is how is the iPad protected when you take it off the magic keyboard? I will be taking it off and using it as a tablet quite frequently and am so afraid I’ll drop it without a case of any kind on it.
Apple has quite clearly seen that tablets are stale unlike other manufacturers. In order to survive they should be competing with laptops to remain relevant. I work in telecoms and so many customers are simply not interested in tablets because most of the time they have 3 in the house already that are just gathering dust.
I’m now actually gravitating towards the iPad Air because of this case and the availability of the Logitech trackpad case for the iPad Air. They do have a function row on the keyboard, the trackpad appears to be good, and when using the iPad in tablet mode the back is still protected when laying down on a hard surface. Only downsides (for me at least, don’t really need the additional power of the pro) are the slightly smaller screen (vs 11”) and the pencil 1 with its ridiculous charging design..
I got my daughter a iPad Air with magic keyboard and pencil bc like you said: she loves my iPad Pro , and that’s all she wants. For school and everything. So I got the keyboard because it helps with the school stuff. Especially composition
Love the review. Like most things about the iPad Pro, I desperately want to try it and shoehorn it into my workflow somehow... but also like most things about the iPad in general, it feels more like an extreme luxury than a useful necessity and therefore, for now, I will not partake.
Great review as always. The iPad Pro is my main computer for over a year now and I’m sure this case would be a fantastic purchase for me. But the price is REALLY making me think twice (especially in brazil, where converting to US dollars, the keyboard costs about 550 usd)
I used my ipad for a year as my "computer". And for the most part, anyone who does basics won't notice a difference. I however use a lot of creative apps on the iPad. So I was happy to use it for everything. But then I hit the wall. In some cases, you still need a laptop. So I broke down and got a Macbook. Which I am happy I did. I still use them both, but I find myself using the iPad less and less. I think Apple made two very good choices in either the iPad or the Macbook. It really depends on how much or how little you will need either.
Great review. I had considered this for my iPad Pro 12.9”, but as I also have a Surface Pro 7 I’ll stick with that for editing and let my iPad stick to doing the fun stuff. Nice design, but as you say, limited.
I just got mine yesterday and I love it. The lack of a function row doesnt bother me all that much. My only gripe is why can’t apple put the camera landscape mode vs portrait mode? Nobody uses it in portrait mode. Now with meetings I have to set my ipad up against books so people can see me properly.
That’s a very great point. I’m a graphic designer and I bought my iPad Pro for all my design work! I thought if I buy a magic keyboard, it would help me to design my graphic design work on
How does it write w the pencil on that "floating" screen? I can't see how writing on screen would work out given there's practically no base support for the palm/pencil pressure.
I think there’s just no point to using the pencil when the ipad is on the keyboard, and it’s a terrible angle anyways. But recently I found that you can turn the ipad upside down when on the keyboard and you have the perfect angle for use with a pencil, and the keyboard act as a little privacy cover even hahah
@@cbravo5447 Sure. The thing is it's inconvenient cuz I'm used to (most users perhaps?) not having to detach and reattach the tablet back and forth just to draw. I like the new case overall but this is an inherent design flaw. The "solution" of taking it out and draw on the desk is very much like the iPhone 4 signal issue where Jobs told us "you're holding it wrong" as opposed to admitting they messed up on the design. Accessories are supposed to make the tablet using experience overall better, not some aspects better, some worse which seems to be the case here. Now i have a more flexible viewing angle but good luck on writing on screen without removing the device. Smh.
Geez. Just pull it off when you wanna use a pencil. This keyboard are not design to work with Apple pencil. Its an Ipad for god's sake. Not a Windows laptop. Does it break your arm or takes hours of your time just to take the Ipad off from the keyboard to use pencil? You are saying the magic keyboard is a flaw just because dont want to attach/detach it from the case which only takes about what? 1-2 seconds? So funny. You give some, you lose some. There's no perfect product. There is only a product that "perfect" for you need.
It works well with magic mouse and keyboard as well as any bluetooth accessory, glad Apple isn't forcing anyone to buy this. I bought a Logi M350 after they announce the mouse support and my magic keyboard works fine, been waiting for this feature for a long time.
One small thing I’ve noticed is that I have an Anker 5 port usb charger which gives 2A per output, and if I use the USB C input on the keyboard hinge the iPad says ‘Not Charging”, however if I plug the charger into the iPad it charges fine. I can only deduce from this that pass-through charging facility via the keyboard needs a higher current PD charger to charge the iPad. You need to bear this in mind if you don’t have a high power PD USB C charger if you want to use pass-through charging !
I just got mine and going to return it. I think if I could fully function without my MacBook I’d keep it, but I still need it and this case is more inconvenient then anything. I miss my the trifold case as it’s far more versatile
Since my iPad is pretty cracked, falling apart & has scratches on the back I'm trying to convince my dad to get me this! Because It's been my dream to play on keyboard. Edit: How much does the iPad in this video cost?
If you flip the iPad Pro upside down while the Magic Keyboard is on, you can have a wider viewing angle. Also the angle allows you to switch to drawing/writing much easier in an easel like “mode.” Albeit you may look kinda weird with a keyboard flipped up the wrong way. But it’s useful. 🤷♂️
Really wish there was a function row but I do love the size, simplicity and sleekness of the design. Biggest issue for me is the angle versatility, however it is extremely stable. So glad I was able to opt for tap to click on the trackpad.
@@AneeshPandey na man, you got to see as more and more people in colleges and universities find their ipads more useful than a laptop. If one day laptop apps be more accessible towards the ipad (via aiming at mobile or phone users) then almost everyone will move to an ipad. It is not what you have now but what you will switch to next.
Love your reviews, always balanced and offering alternate perspectives (iPad + Magic Keyboard v. Surface X). Would have never thought of that comparison!
It's interesting to me when I think about the many people who question the usefulness of 2&1 convertible chromebooks and windows laptops and then watch this review. In this review, he talks about how he didn't realize that it was useful to have the Screen closer to your face. Well, every 2&1 convertible does this already, either in tent mode or by putting the keyboard face down and having the screen face you. I do this all the time on my Google Pixelbook. This keyboard is a step closer, but for those that want the advantages of the 2&1. The Microsoft Surface isn't as good when you are laying on the couch and you want that 2&1 versatility that doesn't wobble everywhere. Anyway, great that there are so many choices for everyone. The biggest concern I have with this case is the material where a new owner said that it has the same material as his 2 year old one which didn't hold up well after 18 months. It concerns me that I might need a case to protect a case. It's already a bit heavy at 3 pounds for the iPad Pro.
Just got it today. The keyboard feeling is much better than the Folio, kinda like the Magic Keyboard for Mac. The Trackpad is VERY nice, it works just as you would expect from macOS, together with a good RDP app (Jump Desktop in my case), it is the ideal „click, right click“ device when RDPing into Windows computers. What I didn‘t really know: it really does not fold further back than in this video. That is the maximum. I use the Folio very often as Tablet with the keyboard folded to the back. This is not possible with this keyboard. That I did not know and that really hurts me a little. Just as Dieter said, this keyboard might stay on the desktop rather than come with me. The Folio, or the normal cover are better as mobile „come with you“ devices.x

Big deal breaker for me not being able to flip the keyboard all the way around on the new magic one so I had to pass.

When I saw that, I was like “No one: ... People with macs taking class notes:”
Dieter is the only reviewer I completely trust on TH-cam. I’m buying the keyboard anyway because I use my iPad Pro with a keyboard 90% of the time.
It is good that Dieter had a Surface device nearby to quickly compare the hardware. Surface devices' mechanism (kickstand+keyboard) is more viable I would say
5:12 Dieter super proud of his iPad/Surface comparo
He's literally asking for the trolls to get to work! 😂
The viewing angle limit is a deal breaker. Why, Apple, WHY.
mensrea for me too...Sad
my guess is so that they can update it and give it more angles on the second gen and make more money. its all business bro.
I’m a teacher and having a second screen and keyboard is a huge benefit in the eLearning environment.
The verdict you summed up with the keyboard and the direction of this video is very unique and helpful. Really nice job
If there was ever a review that perfectly mirrored my impressions about an accessory, it's this.
when you saw the price. thats the time real magic happens😂😂😂
it costs as much as another 10.2" iPad
as much and maybe better a macbook
I don't leave many comments, but I just watched a video review for a keyboard...a keyboard. Plus, I don't even own an iPad Pro!!! 😁 That is how good this review and reviewer was. Excellent job 👍
Surface Pro X is an incredible device, seriously. It's so versatile, lasts forever, connectivity built in, amazing hardware, etc etc.
Wow, kind of funny how many times that was hard to find arguments to justify this accessory...and I agree.
Apple has quite clearly seen that tablets are stale unlike other manufacturers. In order to survive they should be competing with laptops to remain relevant. I work in telecoms and so many customers are simply not interested in tablets because most of the time they have 3 in the house already that are just gathering dust.
On the other hand, we have 3 in the house (1 iOS, 2 Android) that we use every day. So swings and roundabouts.
Only downsides (for me at least, don’t really need the additional power of the pro) are the slightly smaller screen (vs 11”) and the pencil 1 with its ridiculous charging design..
pencil charges in minutes so, that's not really a problem and make sure to look at bright spot issue
But the price is REALLY making me think twice (especially in brazil, where converting to US dollars, the keyboard costs about 550 usd)
this guy makes great reviews
They should add a setting in control center for the keyboard brightness.
Side note: That's a nice place, Deiter.
Awesome review - Spot on on what the “IPAD IS” - ! Excellent - you nailed in!
Great review. I had considered this for my iPad Pro 12.9”, but as I also have a Surface Pro 7 I’ll stick with that for editing and let my iPad stick to doing the fun stuff. Nice design, but as you say, limited.
5:40 cuteness overload!
I thought if I buy a magic keyboard, it would help me to design my graphic design work on
0:15 - It ends up being little closer to your iholes.
Lifehacker lol!!
So it's 50$ less than the "new" iphone gj apple 👌
Or you could say it's twice cheaper than Apple Mac Pro Wheels
@@SuperCwindows and almost 3 times cheaper than the Pro Display XDR stand. Great deal
Exactly. Zero stability.
I get it... but couldn’t you just pull it off to draw?
As an MS Surface user, I am completely jealous of the Magic Keyboard.
Haha, great review! My favorite moment? Around 5:15 😂😂😂

It's better be him reviewing this stuff

Oh thanks god, 2020 aint that bad
Do you have the link for the used wallpaper? :)
yes!!
Have you already found the wallpaper? I am also looking for ist..;-)
Bennez 29 Unfortunately not 😕
Anyone end up finding it?
I’m wait until the 2nd gen of the keyboard comes out with functioning keys
RedMotMan problem is that Apple never has down that. They leave that market to the 3rd party folks like Logitech.
They implemented that into the trackpad instead so good luck waiting for that
I dont think you really need function key. We only used it for volume and brightness which already easy enough to adjust in iPad Pro.
6:55 oh, that sound...
Ya nasty!
Eyeholes is how i call by eye thingies as well.

:p
Apple's plan:
Instead of selling you a USD999 Macbook
They sell you an Ipad for USD999 and a keyboard for USD499
Genius!!!
Yeah well then you wouldn't buy an additional ipad with the laptop
@@AneeshPandey na man, you got to see as more and more people in colleges and universities find their ipads more useful than a laptop. If one day laptop apps be more accessible towards the ipad (via aiming at mobile or phone users) then almost everyone will move to an ipad.
It is not what you have now but what you will switch to next.
@@baconpancakes8899 PWAs are the future
Imagine paying 499 for backlit scissor switches
For a keyboard that costs $350, I'd expect it to type itself...
@Scott Urista By who? Custom made mechanical keyboards with low volume production cost way less than that.
@Scott Urista Expensive != higher-end, Apple is the prime example for that.
Oh come on jack 350 isn’t that bad
@@jragon9215 if you’re paying that now, you’re foolish.
@@mstone-wd7kc I just want a keyboard that works
Gotta love 2021. They put out a keyboard that is so clearly leaps ahead of anything ever and still gets mostly hate.
Thank u, very helpful.... wondering how it’ll work with my case, or it won’t fit since it’s a case in itself?
Love your reviews, always balanced and offering alternate perspectives (iPad + Magic Keyboard v. Surface X). Would have never thought of that comparison!
Can u drop the link for the home screen wallpaper please I’m begging 🥺
Dieter has a nice minimalist apartment vibe going on tho 👀
Weird doors tho
Love that iPad background. Can you share it??
5:02 so true. 😂🥂🤣
No one:

I have a dozen apps in my dock too, dock is the only way to start split-view, you have to put all your most-frequently used apps there.
Eye holes!! Haven’t heard that term since TH-cam exists
Man, Dieter's reviews are so funny and awesome. Great guy
