Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro review

  • Apple’s new Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro makes it easy to turn a tablet into a laptop. But it’s expensive, heavy, and more limited than you might expect. Still, if you want to convert an iPad into a laptop, it’s the best option available.

    I have been using iPad and Apple Pencil for one year. It's main purpose has become Notability. I import my textbooks as PDFs, and read them while highlighting. I also take notes on it as well. I use the traditional smart cover for my iPad for the protection it needs. Instead of printing any school materials out now, I just "print" it to notability, handwrite my answers, and then "print" it back to the computer for submission. Without Notability, it's really just a TH-cam device for me.

      Having used the Surface for a couple of years before I switched to an iPad last year I have to agree. It's the subtle things but they make a huge difference from the usability standpoint. Surface as a tablet makes very little sense, it was almost painful to use it, especially compared to how it used to work with Windows 8 which was much more touch-friendly.

    • @narukami6364
      @narukami6364 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Guillermo Lopez I agree that it’s meant to look good, over complete practicality but I don’t think people are going to spend over a £1000 minimum on such a device to flex in public. Especially to flex and not to actually use it for work. It’s not the same as AirPods. And the other guys right, the iPad is the best (really only) tablet on the market anyway, so it doesn’t exactly need a new PR scheme to make it more mainstream.

      I wasn’t into the Tablet series. Always had been using laptops or a computer. I gotten into the tablet series after buying my dad’s Microsoft surface pro 6. Honestly I find it really amusing and very versatile. It can be used as both a laptop and a tablet. I can even get items like photoshop, illustrator, premiere and all Microsoft apps like word, excel and PowerPoint for free without needing to pay for it. So yes, there are some areas iPad may be better but it all depends on the user’s needs. For me, I’m good with iPhone as my daily phone but my tablet is always gonna be a surface pro. Gotta love that tablet and laptop combination experience.

    This is a phenomenal and accurate review. I just got mine today and I love it. But it is definitely a little shocking and disappointing that it’s so limited with the angles you can put it at. It takes away from a lot of what makes the iPad so great to start with. I see myself leaving this at my desk at the office and maybe traveling with it. But for home use. I’d rather have my simple trifold style case on it.

    I have the magic keyboard coming as soon as it’s back in stock and I can’t wait. But my biggest question is how is the iPad protected when you take it off the magic keyboard? I will be taking it off and using it as a tablet quite frequently and am so afraid I’ll drop it without a case of any kind on it.

    Really wish there was a function row but I do love the size, simplicity and sleekness of the design. Biggest issue for me is the angle versatility, however it is extremely stable. So glad I was able to opt for tap to click on the trackpad.

  • @Archivist42
    @Archivist42 4 ปีที่แล้ว +85

    Leaving out the function row feels like one of those things Apple does where it intentionally gimps an otherwise great product so it can't truly replace another - in this case the MacBook line.

      They actually want it to replace the MacBook eventually. The iPad is the future of mobile productivity (just like the laptop used to be). It’s a jack of all trades, and although it cant do some things quite as well as any laptop, it is IMO the best when it comes to working and studying.

    • @95chanz
      @95chanz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think there’s just no point to using the pencil when the ipad is on the keyboard, and it’s a terrible angle anyways. • @samsonsu1541
      @samsonsu1541 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cbravo5447 Sure. The thing is it's inconvenient cuz I'm used to (most users perhaps?) not having to detach and reattach the tablet back and forth just to draw. I like the new case overall but this is an inherent design flaw. The "solution" of taking it out and draw on the desk is very much like the iPhone 4 signal issue where Jobs told us "you're holding it wrong" as opposed to admitting they messed up on the design. Accessories are supposed to make the tablet using experience overall better, not some aspects better, some worse which seems to be the case here. Now i have a more flexible viewing angle but good luck on writing on screen without removing the device. Smh.

      Geez. Just pull it off when you wanna use a pencil. This keyboard are not design to work with Apple pencil. Its an Ipad for god's sake. Not a Windows laptop. Does it break your arm or takes hours of your time just to take the Ipad off from the keyboard to use pencil? You are saying the magic keyboard is a flaw just because dont want to attach/detach it from the case which only takes about what? 1-2 seconds? So funny. You give some, you lose some. I think the device becomes interesting when you look at the limitations built into this device - rather than think of it as an iPad that acquires laptop elements, I think the Magic keyboard makes the iPad into a reliable laptop that can "break out" into an iPad whenever necessary. For example, I could use it as my laptop to get through e-mails and edit documents, between meetings with clients where I break-out the iPad from its base to give an interactive slideshow, or sketch a process/vision with them in a more personal way than I could with a laptop. It's not aiming to restore functionality to the iPad, it's making it even easier for laptop users on the go to contemplate an iPad.
