  • Apple's repackaged Apple Watch as an "Ultra" for those endurance adventure goers is still no match for Garmin's line of premium fitness wearables. I concluded that the 955 was the best in terms of battery life, training, and price. Enjoy

    I agree completely. For me, no third-party apps, also I can do everything with buttons only, I like how programmed workout as well as recommended work-outs work, also for the triathlete, switching activity works really well, last I have a Garmin Edge for cycling and it integrates better with my Garmin stuff.

      Absolutely better! For his needs. Not for mine. Apple doesn’t yet offer a product to compete with Garmin for elite athletes. But apple is offering a different product - no compromise on the Apple connectivity. The Ultra is an option for a user who doesn’t want to switch watches from “life” to “workout”. Different purpose. Apple didn’t heavily market the Ultra as an “extreme sports” watch, which was a mistake, as it clearly isn’t. What it is is a fully functional Apple Connected Device, which has finally grown to dip a toe into the world of Marathons, Ultra-running, and the like. It’s a first step, but to their credit they didn’t compromise the crazy level of connectivity and function of an Apple Watch. Because of this they didn’t achieve a product which can go head to head with the more “exercise exclusive” Garmin offerings.

You have to buy subscriptions to third party apps, after you already spent so much money to buy the watch.

    The apple watch ultra is expensive for crying out loud. I actually have the Garmin Instinct Solar and I use it all the time. I do have a Forerunner 255 too, but I only use it for grabbing performance data the Instinct Solar won't record. No problems with battery performance on that thing also. Even the Forerunner 45s lasts longer than the apple watch ultra on a charge.

    I’m an amateur, I can’t seem to wear a chest strap, it throws me off. I love everything else about my Garmin 955, but the HR sensor is absolute garbage. I’m actually switching to the Apple Watch for the first time ever for the convenience of HR sensors after owning a 935, 944 and 955.
    For an athlete like you, as someone who wears a chest strap, I agree that the Garmin is a very clear choice. Great video!

    I see that you wear a nice Omega watch as well. I too have a nice watch collection and I keep beating myself up over 1. Wearing my Garmin 24/7 to get the most out of it (and not ever wearing my nice watches). or, just scrapping a Garmin and using a basic Casio to time runs and rest periods in the gym. Can you tell me how you balance the two?

    • @WesJH
      @WesJH  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Garmin is an easy balance for me with the WHOOP. I'll rock the Garmin usually for just my workouts, and then swap out for my Speedy. I even wear the Speedy in athletic clothes. WHOOP is my dedicated 24/7 tracker. That thing has only come off a handful of times over the last 3 years.
      If you don't have another 24/7 tracker, then that becomes a bit more tricky. I'd probably just wear the Omega on more formal/business occasions.

    It seems I'll need to invest in a heart chest strap along with an expensive sports watch; otherwise, the metrics and recovery predictions might not be accurate. How frustrating! Alternatively, I might just opt for an Apple Watch.

    Will any of these devices ever make you consider ditching the whoop and doing it all on one device?

    • @WesJH
      @WesJH  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Short answer: No.
      Firstly, I'm incredible impressed by the performance and recovery metrics Garmin has created. I'm going to do a 1:1 comparison between it an WHOOP. But, for me, no. I love the indiscreetness of WHOOP and they're continuing to innovate their metrics (e.g., recently redesign of their platform, and intro to stress daily measurements). I'm a traditional watch guy, so my Omega Speedy gets 99% of the wrist time. I've been wearing it while I sleep, but I'm not a fan of seeing it's screen first thing in the morning.
      BUT, I think many people would be 100% satisfied with just Garmin and it's metrics.

      I’ve been using the Fenix 7 for about 6 months but got a little fed up of its bulk (even on the 47mm) whilst I slept.
      Been using Whoop for around 2 and a bit weeks now.
      Still early days but I do find it’s starting to find it’s place in my training along side the Garmin.
      I’ve made the Fenix 7 my training device and the Whoop my well-being device that in everything else.
      Whoop on my bicep and Garmin on my wrist.
      Really looking forward to the Whoop strength strain working it’s way out soon.

Apple-watch is on the down curve to top athlete's that need realiable data. and remember take the data w a grain of salt and go see your doctor or regular checkups of your blood and levels. the watch is there to help but is not a medical device . listen to your body.

      I edited out the rationale. I wear my speedy 90% of the time, and only utilize the Garmin when I'm actually training. This of course differs from people who wear a smart watch 100% of the time, and prefer the Apple Watch because of that reason.

    • @WesJH
      @WesJH  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The phone call and automatic SOS are something that the Ultra and Apple watches are good for. The other things, certain models of Garmin can do. Good points though for erring to the side of Apple.

    • @mden2490
      @mden2490 ปีที่แล้ว

      How often do you take ECG’s with your watch? I have the Ultra as well and as much as I like the ability to answer calls with my watch I always second guess answering calls with it is because I know it will greatly deplete the battery. I suspect if you took a poll must people still take there phone with them even if they are wearing an Apple Watch? And the answer to that is clear..battery life! I grew in a time where vm did not exist, now we have been programmed to believe that we can’t function without a watch that can’t take an ecg, play music, or take a call?

    • @timcutbush
      @timcutbush ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mden2490 It's more the ability to make a call if something should happen whilst on a run. To be honest I have an exercise focus setup that blocks most incoming calls, I don't really want to be answering a random call mid run! I just like the ability to go out with just my watch and headphones and not lug my phone about too. I Guess I just prefer a smartwatch with sports functions. I'm not a serious runner that's going for a Ultre any time soon. If my running does become a lot more serious than a Garmin my week the the watch of choice

    • @mden2490
      @mden2490 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timcutbush it's understandable, that you want to have a way of communicating with others in case something goes wrong. Nowadays, with most ultra races, they now require the racers to have a phone on them. I have to admit that when I wear the Garman Epix 2, I do miss being able to reply directly from the watch, but I do have to remind myself that I have my phone with me if it's that important to reply immediately. Both phones have their pros and cons, and it just comes down to personal preference and not so much which one is better than another when it comes to ability to answer calls or reply to texts.
