    This is exactly the review I have been searching for since the Garmin 955 was released.
    Ive been planning to get one for tracking and navigating my long distance trail running and events, this review has answered the question Ive been toying with for weeks, is it really worth spending the extra money on the solar version. It would seem that it is. Thank you both for taking the time to test them in real life situations, rather than just relying what Garmin says on their website 👍

      Glad it was useful Adele, I noticed nobody else had done this sort of comparison, so thought it might help someone out there & it looks like it has 😀 If I got the extra battery life in overcast conditions, then it'll do great on those sunny days ☀️

    I am a casual runner now and definitely don't need either of these products, but I have always loved reading about different running watches and seeing the newest technology out there. Thanks for sharing this video!

      Thanks Michelle, running watches have come so far since my 1st one over a decade ago. I'm really pleased with the 955, it'll be my watch for a long time to come ⌚️

    Good to have the comparison between the 955 solar and non-solar all together. excellent job.

    This was very helpful because one might argue $100+ premium for little over 2 days of battery life doesn’t seem to be a huge game changer or tipping the scale to the side of the solar 955. I will definitely get the regular 955.

      Glad the video helped you choose Tomas, Jake's still loving his regular 955 👍

    Altimeters have to be set or calibrated all of the time as the barometric pressure and temperature present outside changes constantly and impact those readings. I'm guessing that in auto the watch occasionally looks are your location and sets itself to the known elevation where you are at when it does that calibration. It's probably not doing that constantly which explains why one watch might be correct while another is a bit off. I'm a pilot and can tell you that when I take off from an airfield it's not at all unusual for me to have to change the setting on the planes altimeter before landing even just an hour later at that same field, go to a different airfield and things are likely different there as well. I've always considered the altimeter in a watch to be accurate enough, and mostly useful for just tracking if and at what rate you are climbing during an activity.

    • @TheDeterminedRunner
      @TheDeterminedRunner  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the detailed info Nate, especially the need to calibrate the plane in the same field a short time later. I'll be calibrating the altimeter more often now 👍

    Poor Jake... blink twice if you want to be rescued, lol. Great comparison Martin, the elevation differences were nuts. The battery life was interesting, I wonder how different it would be if you had more Sun.

    • @TheDeterminedRunner
      @TheDeterminedRunner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Sage, I'm pretty sure with more sun the battery difference would become much bigger. I'm hoping the elevation will settle & I'll manually calibrate it as well to see if that helps.

    Good review Martin. I'm glad that Garmin is finding ways to compete with longer battery life. Garmin usually takes the beating out of it. That GPS difference is huge.

    Very good test Martin & Jake! so weird with the elevation difference! Beautiful view from that summit! Great thing battery life is better on the solar one, at least in our parts where it is so sunny... Watched the clip with great appreciation, Martin! I have an friend that nearly convinced me to get the Garmin Tactix 7 that's solar too, but stopped for now as it's so expensive.

    • @TheDeterminedRunner
      @TheDeterminedRunner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Mihai, the solar would definitely be a good choice with all of your sunny weather! Maybe the Tactix 7 will come down in price soon? It would need to at that price 💰

    Just catching up on my videos Martin, this is a great one! I'm looking at getting the 955 and wondered about the solar charging difference between the two watches. I was thinking it might be nice to have a solar version. You and Jake did an excellent demonstration! I'm still in thinking mode but closer to picking the one that suits me. I always love the scenery you get to adventure!!

    • @TheDeterminedRunner
      @TheDeterminedRunner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Gill, I'd certainly say for those that get sunnier weather than Scotland, then the Solar would be the one to go for. Hope you are well & go on, treat yourself 😀

    Weather Changes Can Affect Sensor Accuracy
    Weather can contribute to an incorrect reading. This includes:
    An incoming or departing low or high-pressure system
    This can cause your starting elevation reading to be too high or too low. You should manually calibrate to a known elevation in this case. The elevation gain/loss during the recorded activity is typically not affected.
    A windy day
    Wind can affect the sensor causing an inaccurate reading. If you are going to record an activity outdoors when it is windy we suggest wearing the sleeve of a shirt or coat over the watch.

    Hi Martin, nice comparison! I got a non solar version, I usually run short distance races,...two days more in the solar version are really good actually, I would be curious in sunny places probably it is even more

    • @TheDeterminedRunner
      @TheDeterminedRunner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I believe that the altimeter is acting as it should. Just like in an airplane altimeter, you need to calibrate it before you take off. I think its pretty slick that you can set that on the watch.

    Fascinating findings Martin. This was a really good test of the two watches mate. Good to see them being put to the test properly during real life rather than just in a lab or something. I think you're right about the solar being more useful during longer events. It will give you the confidence that it will get you through some really long distances. Great video mate very interesting. 😎🤘

    Hi Martin, great review. Very interesting to see the side by side comparison. I’ve got an aging garmin 935 and was looking to update to the 955. The comparison was really helpful. Looks like solar would be the better investment?
    Review would have been better if you could also have sorted out our Scottish summer weather! Haha

    • @TheDeterminedRunner
      @TheDeterminedRunner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Neil, I'm happy with the solar version, if I'm happy with it in Scottish weather, then most folk will be over the moon in sunnier weather. I'd say you get slightly sunnier weather than over here, so splash the cash & enjoy the watch Neil 👍

    I think if you research watch elevation/altimeters/barometers and adventure racing you will find that adventure racers manually set/calibrate their watch elevation setting at known elevation points because it improves or keeps the elevation accuracy.
    For solar, sure thing, the longer the event and the more sun and keeping your watch exposed to the sun would be of great benefit.

    • @TheDeterminedRunner
      @TheDeterminedRunner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll be manually calibrating it for sure Brian, I just hoped it wasn't necessary but it obviously is. I'll need to make the most of the solar feature before our long dark winter days arrive, thankfully they're a way off yet 👍

    I had to make a decision between solar and non-solar on my fenix 7. Thankfully the standard has been wonderful for me so far. I can't justify the extra money just for the solar charging feature, and the fenix 7 standard's battery is phenomenal as it is - I could get a multi-day ultra out of a single charge. It's interesting the differences you found elsewhere though - I wonder if they have different barometric altimeter components internally...

    • @TheDeterminedRunner
      @TheDeterminedRunner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only difference between the two versions is meant to be just the solar features, so all internals should be the same. Both watches were correct & incorrect on different days with the altimeter. Since I've manually calibrated the watch, it seems to be correct, so I'm thinking that's just something I'll need to do on occasion.
      The battery on the Fenix sounds good, though with these watches, as we choose longer battery options within the watch, the GPS accuracy changes.

    Commercial GPS isn't good enough at determining altitude for either aviation or military use. I operate a GPS disciplined oscillator which reports altitude and you can watch it going up and down, within certain limits. It appears that it's harder to determine altitude accurately than location.

    Hi.
    i want to purchase Fr955 today at a rebel sports shop. I have watched a lot of videos on youtube regarding Fr955 issues as listed below. Please, could you confirm if these issues have been resolved?
    -Improvements to data screen drawing
    - Improvements to Audio Dialect selection
    - Addressed issues with Cycling VO2 Max values
    - Addressed issues with the After Sunset backlight setting
    - Various other bug fixes and improvements

      The screen is MIPs, not amoled... Battery consumption should be identical, regardless of colour (it's not an led generating the colour, it's a shutter that stops light from passing through it)

  • @_samurai_744

    Non-solar version looks very ugly due to the larger black borders around the screen.
