    Great video! I’ve had my 955 for almost a week. You’re right about the touchscreen and mapping, but I think (hope) it is software related and not hardware related. I am a distance runner and care more about weight than I do about the touchscreen, but for someone concerned more about navigation then mapping is going to be a huge deal. I have found that lighter Garmins tend to have more accurate heart rate even when different watches are using the same sensor. Inaccurate heart rate data contaminates most other data. Being a Garmin customer can be frustrating since their best qualities are spread across different devices.

      Cheers mate! Ahh so it’s not just me then ;) Yeah this can quite easily be fixed in software (how long we’ll wait is another question)… the DREAM is that Garmin’s activity tracking team will talk to the outdoors recreational team and share their software because Fenix style navigation on a 955 would further cement Garmin’s standing within this market and the 955’s hardware can handle it! I too am a distance runner and am really nerdy about the HR data, I’ve had lots of luck with the 7s (47g) with a nylon strap.. super accurate if cranked down nice and tight .. gets into a good position on my wrist👌🏽 The 955’s 41g (a nylon band) feels amazing though, I must admit.
      Ahh true. That speaker 🔊 feature on the Venu plus is soo cool, Very jealous

      Agree with this 100%. I really love Garmin and my Fenix 6 Pro has great software, but its just too bulky when running long distances and the HR is pretty much useless, it bounces all over the place.

      @julianzhong8900 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrSuperdurden I am a long timer marathon runner too, when I seriously prepare for a race I use a heart rate monitor. I recently switched to fenix 6 from forerunners I have used for almost 15 years, I like it for the build quality and the extra 40g weight doesn't bother me much. I think it wouldn't cost me 1 minute extra for the whole race. I never thought of wearing a fenix, but I think I would stick with it from now.

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah you might be better of just sticking with it till now.. Garmin forerunners 45 are so cheap now people could have a “training” watch and a super lightweight “race” watch if they were worried about race times and weight 😍

    • @julianzhong8900
      @julianzhong8900 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I just found out that 7s sapphire solar is only a few grams heavier than 955, it is no brainer 7s than 955. On the other hand, I think if we really care about the weight difference, 255s would be the way to go for marathon ensusiasts, 20 grams can really make some differences.

    This is one of the best Garmin watch comparison videos. It's hard to believe that other channels review so many Garmin watches, yet have not focused on these issues. This review shows the power of a subject matter expert reviewer, rather than just publishing surface-level product announcements.

    Nice video, you caught some real nuance stuff here that most would overlook. I think a lot of the "issues" you site here are by design from Garmin since the Forerunner falls into the "fitness/running" category and the Fenix is the flagship outdoor adventure watch. It would make sense for them to share the same firmware but that's not the case. I will say, the lack of double tap to zoom is a bummer! But most of the other features I don't think the average person would notice (side scrolling for example). Keep up the good work!

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hey Dave! Thanks for the comment ❤️ Big fan! Yeah it seems so, I really hope that the Garmin “fitness/running” category team get access to the “outdoor recreational” team’s firmware because I feel like there’s a big market of people who really do want all the Fenix features in a lightweight polymer body. Also there’ll be a lot of people “upgrading” from an older Fenix 6 (which doesn’t having training status features for example) to the 955 and realising there are in-fact quite a few differences. All the best mate 🌟

      Could not agree more with my man, Chase the Summit! Being the average user, I could not love my 955 more! Wish it had the double tapping for the maps, but stuff like side scrolling is completely useless for me. If I need to dive into data, that’s what the app is for. And I added Health Snapshot to my favorite activities, so it is literally 1 button click to get to. And I have no problem holding the button for an entire 1 second to get to my flashlight. All of these 1st world complaints simply astound me. Again, I love my 955 and wouldn’t trade it!

    Very good video, shows you really went into the everyday use of these watches. Other channels (DC, DesFit etc) feel more like reading from the marketing material along some specs and random workout clips. But this here is the stuff that really matters (and can frustrate). If I can’t move the map to the left, it doesn’t matter if it has 240 or 250 pixels.

    Very interesting finds on the difference, nice work. I suspect software updates will clean some of the chunkiness up on the 955. As for the missing features, I wont miss them when I flip from my Fenix to the 955 considering the almost ~30% weight savings between the two. Also agree with other comments that the Forerunning series has always had much more accurate HR monitoring, could be due to less bouncing from the less weight.

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks bro! 🙏🏼 Yeah, hopefully clunkiness is not here to stay. Out of curiosity, would you see yourself as a user who would be okay with the 255? Or is the 955 with missing navigation 🧭 features and lack of proper touch control features the sweet spot for you? That’s a fair point about the HR especially for mountain biking. Having tested both the 955 (41g) and 7s (47g) for 10 days I must say I love the reduced weight but the form factor of the 7s is really nice and definitely more comfortable for me. It’s got me thinking I’d love to see Garmin come out with a 955s haha

    • @MrSuperdurden
      @MrSuperdurden 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ActiveIdeas I know lots of people who love the S form factor. For me the priorities are: 1) Battery Life 2)HR accuracy 3)GPS Accuracy 4) Altimeter Accuracy 5) Sleep Tracking (which fits into HR accuracy). The maps are neat, but I always carry my phone with Gaia GPS routes when going long/unknown routes. I've had touch screen in the past and just prefer buttons. When I'm on trail its muddy, sweaty and not conducive to touch. If I need to stop and look at a map on my watch in that much detail, I'll just pull out my phone. If cost were one of the factors above I would just go with the 255, but I was less cost sensitive for something I use daily. I've never had solar, but thought it could help augment battery on longer back country trips.

    Thanks for the excellent thorough review, the 955 firmware has completely preserved the same shortcomings of the 945 model.
    And you know what? The ancient model 935 has a quick "Hold Down" button, has a 4-second backlight, and has a strict watchface with a beautiful font.

I saw the review from Chase the Summit as they say "in depth", but basically it's just general salesman talk with nice hand gestures not saying much of "in depth" comparison. I think videos like this are very needed especially nowadays when companies are trying to produce crap functionality in the nice coat. Good job!

    This is why I detest Garmin's business model; you pay extra for software options! It's pure vaporware!! No actual value for money. And the next year you get another iteration with the same hardware but more software functionality. I think the clear answer is that the processors are not the same. For that reason the engineers had to come up with ways to make it seem as close to the same as possible by making a lot of tiny tweaks that were hopefully unnoticeable to the user. Explains the battery draining quicker (weaker processor working harder using more power), less responsive touch screen with fewer functions, more separate menus as apposed to multiple functions inside one menu on the Fenix. The forerunner just has a less powerful processor. That's how they cut costs. Still, pretty impressive still that they managed to put so much value in a watch that's half the price or less than the Fenix 7 though.

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good point! 🌟 That could be the reason why… apparently the Fenix 7 has the ARM Cortex M4 CPU with FPU and MPU support. I’m not able to see if the 955 has the same or similar. But It honestly wouldn’t surprise me if they had the same processor due to so many established reviewers saying “it has the same insides as the Fenix 7 just in a plastic casing” with the software being built by different departments it’s not far-fetched to question if it’s just a software difference 🌟 Also in the UK the 955 Solar is £550 whereas you can get a base model Fenix 7 for £570 so things get though here.. but yes, much cheaper that the Solar Sapphire models with multi-band 👊🏽 Thanks for the comment Terran 🌟

    • @DJ-ru4im
      @DJ-ru4im ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, Terran, your comment makes no sense. First of all, the 955 does not use a weaker processor. Second of all, a weaker processor would consume less power. It wouldn't "work harder using more power." Finally, the Fenix 7 doesn't cost anywhere near double the 955. Even when you get the sapphire solar top-end version it doesn't cost double.

      Hey again mate, tough question. If it was me I would get the 955 all day long, especially if the same price. For me, I love the touch screen, love the training readiness, enjoy the occasional ‘health snapshot’, i think there’s a few more activity profiles (will have to double check that), the maps will be amazing (when/if they fix the bugs), HRV tracking during sleep is a golden feature too.. although I’ve only been getting 6 days battery life with minimal training. The Fenix 6 is super tough (not a scratch on mine), and has great battery life (especially if you go for 6X), super reliable (had minimal bugs over the year of using it), had great navigation features but the HR sensor is old and dated now (elevate 3) and as amazing as it is, it’s beginning to feel abit long in the tooth if you’re a nerd like me and enjoy using new technology. Best review I’ve seen. Nothing better than real experience over a review straight out of the manual. Couple of questions. Can all the issues be fixed with a firmware update? Where did you get that watch band shown in the review? Garmin’s watch bands from time to time irritates my skin. This review has made me a new subscriber. Thanks.

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thankyou for the questions Abel! I can’t wait to upload my full “real world” review, lots to talk about! Unfortunately many of my issues with the watch identified in this video will not be fixed by software because they are simply limitations of the ‘forerunner series’ Vs the ‘Fenix series’. I really hope Garmin, one day, change this because I think there is a MASSIVE market for people who want all the Fenix features in a lightweight body. Ahh good question, I suffer with eczema and skin rashes especially from silicone bands, amzn.to/3MOnjZd this Nylon band has been a dream (affiliate link). After having success with Garmin’s UltraFit 26mm band I wanted something similar for the 955 (22mm) and this was it. I’ve used it for a year (on other garmins) and durability, comfort, and weight are all great. Just remember to clean regularly (takes 2 seconds in the shower).

  • @harrythehandyman
    @harrythehandyman ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My guess is that more firmware R&D time went into Fenix 7 (from a non-touch screen Fenix 6). The 955 is also a big leap from non-touch 945, thus the firmware (adding touch logic and menu, etc.) needs a lot of work, which Garmin has less incentive to work on. I think it would be too good to be true that the 955 only differs in material and build quality from Fenix 7 and almost half the price. I think the touch swipe sensitivity bug is likely to get fixed in future firmware updates. But the UI/menu difference is unlikely.

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Harry! It’s a tough one because in the UK you can buy a base model Fenix 7 for about £500-£550 now which is the same price as a forerunner 955 solar so things get a little complicated. To be honest I’ve seen a lot of people now have continued issues with the 955 & random bugs but i definitely think Garmin are a company that listens (they’ve already improved the 955 so much) and I’m sooo excited to see what they do with the Forerunner 965 LTE! ⭐️

    The Hot Key thing where the Forerunner can't have a programmed back button - Garmin did this with the Fenix 6 and Forerunner 945 too. Annoying.
    I've noticed too that the shortcuts on the 955 take noticeably longer to trigger than on my old 945. I used the shortcuts on my 945 every day for two years a variety of things (mostly alarms and timers) - and I'm having to adjust to the longer trigger period on the 955. REALLY annoying.

    Thanks for the great content! About to jump in for my first Garmin watch (currently Samsung user). Looking to do my second triathlon this year (first was without a watch for swimming). Is there one you would suggest for swimming, biking, and running in combination? I was originally thinking 955 but after watching your videos seems to push me towards the Fenix 7 standard. I have a discount code so that difference is about $100 between the Fenix 7 and 955 for me now in the US. It's hard to tell if the value is there for $100 or if I would even notices some of the things since this is my first Garmin.

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is such a tough question mate! Tbh, I think if this is your first Garmin you could get away with using the 955 and you’ll love it.. especially because you know no different. The sell for the 955 is much harder for those who are coming from the Fenix 6 for example who might find they’re actually losing out on features from a “last generation” watch. For swimming biking running 100% go 955 for your first watch, it’s the dream. If you ever seen yourself doing advanced navigation in new environments, don’t mind a heavier watch, need something more durable to bashes/crashes and a watch with a more intuitive software experience I would say spend the extra $100 🌟 The resale value on both is really strong too if you do change your mind 👍🏽 Hope this helps 👊🏽

    Thanks for this, indeed good to mention that there are also quite some flaws with the 955... It honestly feels as if they rushed the release and half ported the firmware from the Fenix7 or epix. Mainly the touch implementation is seriously lacking and exactly that is a main selling point of the 955. I have it for a week myself and still do like it, and hope/think most will be fixed with firmware updates but the initial impression is lacking at places unfortunately. (Also battery life is not as impressive here, but that also seems very... erratical. So yes, great potential but not living up to it quite yet.

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem! 🌟 Yeah it’s a shame that a top selling feature (touch screen) is so limited on the half ported firmware. I don’t think anyone was expecting Apple Watch pinch to zoom features lol but the F7 got the balance right. Ive managed 6 days of light use and I’m at 13% (with sleep tracking for HRV). Yeah the initial impression hasn’t been as magical as I’ve been dreaming of for the past two years, but hey.. we’re getting there 😍

I currently use an Apple Watch 4 and I love it but feel like I would enjoy the features that Garmin has. I feel like I would enjoy the lighter weight of the 955 when running

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you’ve previously worn an Apple Watch have you thought about the idea of the Epix.. you get all the ruggedness of the Fenix, in a casing that’s only 47g with a nylon band that would be about 51g?
      Alternatively if it’s just between the F7 and 955 I would say consider the F7s Sapphire Solar.. super lightweight, rugged, great battery life, fantastic build quality and a sapphire display to protect it from impact when you’re skiing. The 7s feels less bulky on my wrist because of the small casing size and with a weight difference of 5g more than the 955 it feels just as lightweight 🌟 If you’re on a budget, it may have to be the 955.. still enjoyable to use and perfectly fine for running, hiking etc. Hope this helps mate 👏🏽

      Since 255 nowadays got the multisport function now the 955 is much less attractive specially with these problems. It’s such a tough question mate! I honestly prefer lighter watches so I was so hyped for the 955.. I was convinced it would be my primary watch, but after multiple months of using it and continued issues with bugs I really would sway people towards Garmin’s more premium models which just feel like they’ve had a little more love. If you can afford it, it’s worth the reduced levels of stress when the watch just stops working for no reason, never had that on Fenix (can imagine Epix and Enduro 2 are just as awesome). Don’t get me wrong though, if you’re looking to save money there’s a lot to love about the 955, at this price point having premium training readiness features is bloody awesome! Hope this helps 🌟

    Great video, very frustrating to see how they limit the 955, it is still a very expensive watch. Lack of continuity across the ranges show how greedy Garmin actually is. If you want better software pay even more, even though they could easily fix that with an update. Compare it to the Apple Watch at least the software is exactly the same across all price points. They have nailed the customer experience in that respect. Garmin as usual want to rob you blind! ( I just got the 955 ) I already regret it

It’s a tough one.. I must definitely PRAISE Garmin for their lack of a subscription model 👏🏽 As frustrating as this is, I’d much prefer this over the subscription locks of many of their market competitors. • @alexcrow1856
    @alexcrow1856 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Well reviewed! I'm a Garmin watch owner myself (fenix 5, instinct solar) and It makes me disappointed seeing all this. Garmin makes great watches and they are really expensive. Assuming the price tag it is fair to expect great software and spot-on accurate sensors and top of the line overall quality watch that will beat every competitor along the way. Unfortunately it is not the case. Here is why. First thing - elevation sensor. I'm pretty sure everybody knows that elevation sensor is far from being perfect on Garmin devices and it regularly has elevation spikes within 50m for no reason. I'm not even talking about elevation change when you work out in the gym, which means you are on the same floor, going nowhere. Second thing - heart rate sensor. You would assume that for the price you pay you would get the most accurate heart-rate sensor, but once again it is not the case. It is better then in most other watches, but not the best (watch quantified scientist video for more details). Third problem - software. I'm using instinct solar, and this watch is advertised for hikers, outdoor people and nature enthusiasts. However, for some reason this watch is unable to display a route with 50 or more waypoints (I'm pretty sure instinct 2 has the same limitation). That means that if you upload a long train in hope to follow it through you are guaranteed to lose half of the waypoints when it's displayed on your watch.(or it can freeze and restart which is even better!) Amazing! This is exactly what I expect from the most expensive brand on the market. Fourth thing - algorithms. Body battery - is number your watch gives you between 0 and 100 to display how well rested you are after a night of sleep. I don't know how they measure the score but my body battery is never goes above 30, even though I sleep well, exercise regularly don't smoke and don't really drink that often. And I feel amazing, well rested and annoyed with another feature from garmin, which doesn't deliver.(I found a bunch of people on reddit with the same problem, so it's not just my case.) Fifth problem - sleep score. I'm gonna be brief, it's not accurate.
    Good things:
    good gps
    durability and build quality
    battery (but not the best)
    Final thoughts:
    Garmin makes good watches, but for the price you pay you would expect to get the best watch among others, but it's not the case. Garmin is trying to look the best while being above mediocre
    P.s. It makes me really annoyed to see price tag for garmin watches, considering that there are watches from other companies which might not be better, but can easily stand out against garmin watches for a third/half of the price. (look up t-rex 2)

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ahh sorry to hear you've had such a tough experience with it all mate. Tbh, I've been using Garmin for nearly a decade now and have always felt spoilt by the technology... it's never been 100% perfect but as they're pushing the boundaries of what a watch can do and pioneering the technology its easy to let them off. I saw a comment today about the new Fenix line costing as much as an M1 MacBook Air haha.. and that snapped me back into reality a bit, it's true the cost is high. On the other hand though their customer services are great (I've had a friend get 4 replacements of their Vivoactive 3 hahah), and I used the Vivoactive 3 myself for around 3 years with no issues. So if you break down the cost over the amount of years you use it and the fact there is no subscription model.. it begins to feel a little me enticing! 🤣 All the best 🌟

    Seems to be the FR gets less “proces power”. And the FR 255 is better, simpler and no buggy touchscreen. Overal the Apple Watch software is much more stable then Garmins. Also try to change settings.. it’s a maze. I do prefer Garmin training info and battery life a lot more.

      Doesn’t matter how good the processor is if the software is a dumpster fire and I’m honestly not sure which is the case.. if it’s software or processing power. One thing to note is that since i made this video a lot of improvements have been made to the user experience making it actually usable haha. Although the experience is still worlds apart from the Fenix 👊🏽 Agreed though, I love the battery life and training info.. at the moment I’m testing Coros and Suunto and must admit I extremely miss training metrics.. I generally need something resistant to training in the gym and cycling. The price of the 6pro is fine now, but does it make sense to pack your money in a watch with old sensors?

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey mate, thanks for the comment! It’s funny you ask this I’m actually half way through filming a video “Garmin’s best watches of 2022” and in my opinion the Fenix 6X pro Solar titanium is one of the best feature rich and value for money purchases you can make. I did have some issues with GPS when under heavily forested areas or tall buildings.. what would happen is that the “current pace” would sometimes be 1 to 2 minutes off.. I didn’t mind because when I finished the activity the actual gps track and pace would have been corrected. For most activities and especially road running “current pace” would be fine. I’m terms of the Heart rate I upgraded from the vivoactive 3 and saw that the Fenix 6X pro Solar titanium was a massive improvement in heart rate.. rarely would it be wrong and it wouldn’t struggle to lock on on really cold days like my older VA3. I must mention that I always used the F6Xpro with a nylon band so I was able to get a really good fit and would recommend you do the same for more accuracy. Whilst the Fenix 7 have elevate 4 I wouldn’t say the advancements are ground breaking and most series athletes will still be using a heart rate strap for true data. I say GO FOR IT, as long as you don’t mind not having a touch screen 👍🏽 Also look on eBay for ‘Fenix 6X pro Titanium Solar’ as this is one of Garmin’s best ever made watches 👊🏽 All the best 🌟

    Great comparison, thank you. I think it is quite disappointing that Garmin segments shared software feature sets and performance between models. The compass is a good example. That doesn't really cut it anymore in this era of Apple Watch and iPhone. It's not like Apple has a different compass app on the Mini vs Pro iPhone. Garmin would do very well to consolidate their "Garmin OS" to one team so that the core experience is shared across the hardware lines. I feel like that would also modernize their programming effort, but what do I know! It would also make for a consistent experience for users.

      What a fantastic comment! 🌟 I agree, I'm a big fan of Garmin, but in 2022 and of all the watches that could have had serious issues, it was the mythical 955 that we all dreamed of. The iPhone Mini vs Pro is a good example actually, I might steal that for the full review ;) Yeah, maybe a consolidation of the Garmin OS is needed. @@ActiveIdeas To be honest, the Fenix seems a little 'bulky' for what I want. I liked the slimmer profile of the Forerunner but some of these issues are a bit much for me. Whether they can or will be sorted by software updates, who knows. The sleep tracking is a big thing for me. While no watch will be on par with laboratory conditions, I'm fairly happy with my Galaxy Watch 3 sleep tracking so any new device would need to be equal or better to that.
      The watch face issue surprised me though. I would've thought there'd at least be some faces out there that weren't an issue? I'm quite fussy with watch faces though and scroll past 98% of the Galaxy store. Connect IQ is even worse but there are some that tick my boxes, just not many.
      Anyway thanks for this video. As another viewer said, DCs, Des's etc videos are all good & have their place but some times we need to know the daily irritations these watches will present before we hand over our hard earned & you did that well.

      I love DC Rainmaker, he’s also a smart dude. More broadly, the fitness community have been waiting a long time for 955, many tech reviewers have hyped up the dream of it too so when it’s finally been released I’m not surprised if the industry has been reluctant to share their honest frustrations (I guess it potentially doesn’t help that many reviewers get the ‘prototype’ units for free too haha). Although, in terms of longevity, their videos may stand the test of time where mine could be knocked out of date with a software update (although I doubt it because Garmin need to work on A LOT to make this worthy of the “F7 in a polymer body” title that so many proclaim). So much potential :/ Let’s see how this plays out 👌🏽🌟

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Yeah, I’m not sure where it’s referring to me doing a deep dive comparison between the two. But haters gonna hate apparently. I do lots of deep dive comparisons between units that go into extreme details, but simply haven’t had the time to do this one yet.
      However, ultimately, while these are similar products for some people, they are different products by different teams and have different priorities. Thus, while it’s easy to show all the little tidbits missing from the Fenix 7 on the 955, it’s also notable to show all the currently missing 955 features from a Fenix 7. Which is actually a much bigger gap.

I would have to use this watch a little longer than a few days to see how the HR performed (I have some initial thoughts but will keep on monitoring), I’ve seen some sustained higher than normal HR readings but I ran my first 100mi ultra a few weeks back so could just be recovery/spikes from that 🤣 To the second part you said: If it’s an issue with the watch then my guess is more likely firmware. If you can’t see any visible dust blocking light (like on mine) you should be good and it is 99.9% probably software.
