Crashed jeep recovery out of Elephant Hill Trail(Front axle ripped out)

  • This was quite the recovery out of Canyonlands National Park on the Elephant Hill Trail. Driver said he had ripped the whole front axle out of his jeep. After seeing pictures we decided to take the wrecker, the jk, and the recovery trailer and the whole crew in after it. It went rather well considering the remote location and the extent of the damage done to the jeep.

If there was an annual Oscar for best recovery video, this would be my nomination. The way the team dealt with the tight turns and steep slopes was phenomenal. And those front wheel digs, and placing of rocks looked so casual, just an ordinary day for someone with those highly developed driving skills. The whole video made experienced rock crawlers look like beginners. To add to all that, great video editing. I felt as if I was walking alongside the rigs. The best ever.

As for being new to this we all start somewhere brother and this is much better than 80% of newbies on TH-cam. Only suggestion I would make for you would be a go pro or two on your rig to have some POV footage to play with or maybe one facing you off you want to do a little chatting during the the recovery. Other than that Ace’s my guy the rest will come the more you do it 👍🏻👍🏻

Ended up here after hours of watching Matt's Off Road last few days. I'm not from the off road world but did grow up around cars, drive a 1996 dodge V10 dually, and went back and rewound almost a dozen times watching this thinking.. wtf was that?!?!?!??! the amount of skill and control you have not only off roading but in the most insane custom built mad max looking rig, I'm just amazed at how you seem to bend the laws of physics... and if that wasn't enough oh I don't know, let's tow a trailer?!?!?!?!? Not sure if you'll see this but IMO the only other human being I've ever seen with this level of skill behind the wheel is Ken Block... and there's the next channel cross over, get this thing on the Hoogian races everything

Don't know if there is a more official name for the narrow section, but the rangers call it Dupont Alley because of all the paint on the walls from being scratched off of vehicles.

We were in Devils Kitchen for 3 nites, when this happened. We ran into X, ranger who hiked down to review & take photos of the vehicle, axle, and resource damage. I'd not seen this video until today. The right angle in SOB corner after one comes N out of Bobby's Hole is difficult enough for 4 wheel vehicle, but with a trailer behind. Kudos to the excellent work of the Moab "trail mater" who pulled "the whole job off". Both vehicles, axle and dead vehicle.

    • @mmartian1969

@@GOLDVIOLINbowofdeath where he disconnects the rear drive (usually in the transfer case) so that only the front axle has power. By putting the rear brakes on, and turning one way you can basically walk the front end in that direction without driving forward.
Kind of hard to explain but you can see him do it in a few spots where he points the front end in a different direction without moving forward or reverse.

This recovery is an amazing one. Breathtaking skills. I was holding my breath in all those sharp bends on your way up. Thinking “he’s never gonna make that one” and yet you did. Unbelievable you were able to drive not only your own rig, but on top of that towing something. Without the footage it’s almost unbelievable. You deserve the most RESPECT ever.
BTW Your skills in filming and editing the VLOGs have progressed very much. Keep doing what you do. Skills grow and grow by doing it more and more.

Hi Rory, handled like a pro. The editing will come. Don't fuss it.
I have a question about your truck's transmission. Is it basically a four speed manual gearbox? I see three pedals so I'm assuming you have a clutch. From one of your other videos I see you can drive back or front or both axles and lockers on both. Do you have independent rear brakes or just what anyone else would call the parking brake?. An explanation would help a non trail driver like me to understand some of your manoeuvres around those switchbacks.
I can see now why Matt is aiming for four wheel steering on his new heavy weight rig. It should be pretty impressive when it's done.
Regards from Canada's banana belt. 🤔🇨🇦👍

I found the channel by watching Matt's Off Road Recovery & while I still enjoy it, I'm definitely subbed here now as well. An excellent drive on a highly technical course & not a mistake made, just a thing of beauty to see!! And I hope ya'll are cool with it but I'm stealing your twin axle trailer design that the wrecked Jeep was loaded onto. It will make a seriously sweet RC Trailer, especially with the tilt feature.

I was out there when this guy crashed his Jeep. We were driving down this straight section when this dood is coming at us at serious speed, sees us thankfully, locks up his breaks, does a 6 point turn with no regard for going off trail, and blasts off in front of us going crazy fast. We keep driving in that direction and 1/2 mile down the trail we come upon him and his buddies and they tell us about the crash.
This guy had his kid in the passenger seat, super lucky no one got hurt in this very remote area.
He says in the video he was going 45. I estimate more like 80. His buddies told me he put a corvette engine in the Jeep and was testing it out.

Rory, you don't know us, we are silent watchers. Rarely comment on anything. But as old as it is, I am commenting. As usual, your skills prevailed. Awesome job. I want to say, this is Micki's husband, not Micki. I have been wheeling since the 70's. I always appreciate your work and your appreciation for our National Parks. We are from Texas and feel the same. This episode pissed me off, not at you, it seems you always do the right thing. It's the idiot that did this. First, he risked the lives of everyone with him. Second, he destroyed areas meant to be untouched, third, this is what gets parks closed, stupidity. Fourth, its his Jeep and he has a right to do what he wants to it, providing he does not harm others or harm the beauty of our natural parks. He in fact dredged a new trail, busted up his Jeep causing it to leak oil and catch fire. Its shamefull. While it is his Keep and his business its disgusting, we own a built Gladiator, a built JK, and a TJ rock crawler, among other things, I do not condone destroying the land or wasting an 80k Jeep. Just because he has money, doesn't mean he needs to shove it in the face of capable people that would appreciate a rig like that. He has no business in this sport and should be banned from coming into a park or anywhere else. His actions make it hard on everyone that just want to have a good time responsibly. I want to say, we appreciate your work again, you did an awesome job, hope you charged the hell out of him for risking your lives and taking care of nature to save his now, wrecked Jeep.

Great recovery! "about 45 mph", no way. Going faster than 45 when he jumped the jeep over 50 feet and nosed into the bank. SOB hill is no joke, I would have tried going up impossible hill and out horse mountain before going over SOB hill.

Absolutely brilliant... no slick editing required when those kinds of driving skills are on display! The precision & feel for manoeuvring not just the Trailmater, but also towing a crippled Jeep hanging from a cable as well is truly impressive... I'm still trying to work out how you get the Trailmater to pirouette in those super-tight turns! 👏

As someone that has been on the elephant hill trail, cameras simply don't do justice to how steep and rugged it is. Trail mater is great, but Rory is in a whole league of his own. He is by far the most skilled driver to ever navigate slick rock country. Well done Rory and team!

My man!!! Rory that was a great recovery video! You and your rig never let us down. The way you handled the tight turns and how you were guiding the other jeep when climbing up at the 18:00 mark. Directing him with the front and back lockers to get around was awesome. Watching this video made me feel like I was there with you guys. At 26:21 I was nervous when I saw the front of your truck go up in the air. Awesome job getting it out of there and onto the trailer. Keep up the great work!!!
