I’m from Pfalz and this is 95% our dialect. Like you could probably go down to the grocery store and chat with anyone. They’d understand you with little to no effort.
I have been many times and have had that experience. Have you seen our two films: Hiwwe wie Driwwe and Hiwwe wie Driwwe Zwää?
Will we have "Nix besser!" and "vahuddelt" in a future video, too, Herr Professa? 😁
Heh heh, I'm reminded of the Hochdeutsch, "Langsam und deutlicher, bitte!"
And, "Wie, bitte?"
Ah! "Briwwi", from English "privy", I take it?
I just recently started driving an "Amish Taxi" and I'm diving headfirst into your videos.... you are a Godsend.
Do you have any advice for an outsider when it comes to making small talk. Are there subjects that are relatable to *most* PA Dutch (I've found baseball is quite popular) and more importantly, are there subjects you avoid at all costs? I was raised that you don't discuss religion or politics in mixed company... are there other subjects that would fall into that category that wouldn't be apparent to an English?
That's an interesting question. In Germany small talk is actually not existent (refering to what Americans call it).
In German there are 6 words for "the" 8 words for "you" and about 200 to describe the end of a bread (no joke). We have 10 Mio words and have to steal "der Smalltalk" from English, if we want to describe it.
Does small talk exist in PD? Or is it Part of the Amish culture?
@@carlwitt3934 small talk would be best until you build relationships with them.
How would you suggest I go about doing that? Is it just a lot of time in silence as I drive them?
Should I great them in Dutch as I learn? Can knowing Dutch be a detriment to trying to build a relationship? I know when it comes to Spanish, you get a huge spectrum of responses, including some who become very uncomfortable around you.
@@carlwitt3934 I would try greeting them in Dutch: Hello or Guder Daag and then ask Wie bischt? See where that gets ya. Some will engage, some probably won't.
