    This is so true. Terminology like this hindered my progress for years. Make sure you find a teacher that uses terms that you understand and can apply people....it will make a world of difference in your singing progress. Singing isn't really that hard, it's just very specific and intentional.

    • @rebeccagroth8687
      @rebeccagroth8687 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Very true. I have had so many different teachers during the past five years and even though many of them were nice, no one really taught me a good and healthy vocal technique. But my current teacher, and also my favorite, has really opened my eyes to what a good singing technique should feel like and it has a lot to do with what terms she uses. If I don't understand a technique she's showing, she will rephrase and use other words/mental images to explain. It's so important!

    Justin is a great teacher because he always illustrates with his voice the point he is making. Right combination of theory and example working together. . By watching his lessons I understood the value of playing with your voice in different styles. He masters the art of controlled flexibility. It looks like he can impersonate any possible singer.

    I loved seeing these techniques in relation to eachother. Sometimes the videos seem to live in their own vacuum while they're actually all around techniques in all types of singing, but this fixes it for these techniques for me.
    Can you do one on overtone singing? I know it's oddly specific and obscure, but I'm having huge trouble with it.

    Some Italian teachers seem to say to me that one must if one can, to maintain that chiaro oscuro through the tenor range maintaining chest register even to the c5. Something i cannot comprehend how to do but when you hear a tenor sing so loud and seemingly connected they must be doing that. I know I'm wrong somewhere but I love operatic technique and there are not many teachers out there. Would love some feedback as other teachers don't even mention chiaro oscuro as you have. Cheers.
    You're the best.
    Ps, I know we don't have to sing over a full Orchestra without amplification but the thrill of hearing a strong tenor like corelli or Salvatore Fisichella is other worldly yo me. I love it.

    Aren't there cases where you SHOULD tell someone they need to lift the soft palate, such as hypernasality? I was shocked when you said never let anyone tell you to raise the soft palate! Can you explain a little more on that statement? Thank you!

    • @NewYorkVocalCoaching
      @NewYorkVocalCoaching  7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Great question Kaela! Justin is making a little bit of a joke with that comment. There are indeed cases of hyper-nasality. However, most singers do not need to raise their Soft Palate as it already raises naturally for all vowels sounds. Voice Teachers actually mean to address the Larynx when they address the Soft Palate. They confuse brighter formants for "nasality" and mistakenly go after the Soft Palate. This misunderstanding leads most singers to a lot of Tongue Tension and an obsession with fixing an area that actually doesn't need fixing. But, you're right, there are some rare cases when some singers actually are singing with TOO MUCH Nasal Resonance. Most singers, though, have difficulty accessing their Nasal Resonance rather than the other way around. Episode 60 (and also Episode 2 and Episode 77) of our show should help you understand this VERY common vocal myth and misunderstanding! Happy Singing! :)

    What technique does Brendon Urie from Panic at the Disco use when he sings? He seems to sing so effortlessly on low and high notes!

    Some of the "vocalists" on "The Voice" tend to "fall backwards," so that's where you can see this sort of thing. On the other hand, I also hear a lot of aspiring singers press forward and "up" with a strained sound, and the "voice coaches" on the show seem to encourage this clearly questionable idea. I'd like to get you take on this, Justin, if you have a moment. Thanks, and keep up the good work!

    I found my head voice 5 months ago but its still not very usable in singing, it sounds husky and i can't maintain it for long, my chest tries to enter when i sing in headvoice. How do i improve this

    I love your videos and have learned so much technically and theoretically from them. So thank you for that. I'll try to keep this question short as maybe it's been covered to its fullest extent in previous videos. I would like to know if physically we as singers max out? My passagio is around a G4 and I can get my head voice up to a G5 (working on making it clean) but physically it feels like I can't move above that with my vocal chords. I can not figure out how to even squeak passed a G#5. Is this something that comes with strengthening the head voice or is it time for a new technique? New video idea or have you covered this territory in extent already in prior videos. Thanks again so much I'm looking forward to any feedback
