Twang is super important when trying to harmonize with someone else. It's how you create your blend. I learned how to sing by harmonizing first so i picked it up naturally and use it to shape my voice around whoever i'm singing with, by using different percentages of twang like justin talks about.
Celine Dion has always been the best example of a popular singer that uses twang regularly to her advantage. I think a lot of people confuse it with her being super nasal even when she’s singing a mid belt like C5 or D5 with a very neutral placement just because of the way it resonates.
And an amazing singer! Have you heard Justin's range and how different he can make his voice sound. You got see this. Amazing: th-cam.com/video/tnSSp3R9Wd8v/w-d-xo.htmle
Thank you very much for sharing this exercise! It will help finding the right voice quality for high gospel songs (instead of switching to an sweet, angelic quality).
One thing no one talks about is using the Twang or Mix in a song that specifically goes up through the passagio multiple times asending and decensding. So the question I would have is how do you do that and keeping a consistent sound.
Thank you for the dalek! From now on I'm going to go with my favorite "exterminate " line not only for fun but in order to practice my vocal technique :)
I just stumbled upon this channel and I just want to say that you have an incredible personality for teaching. You could teach singing to kids on a Nick Jr show and it'd be a hit.
1:15 was funny... hahaha... Good tips. This is totally useful. Love to see your tutorials...

Thank you for putting these singing lessons on here, really appreciate it! I have a public performance next Friday evening here in the Netherlands, using the Twang for Rock.
I was looking for information about estill voice and I found this video, I thought it was great and exercises too, you're an excellent teacher. Now I am following , greetings from Bogotá-Colombia
+Alberto Hinojosa ...remember all the dark hours in your life - when you doubted yourself ~ not knowing that you were accidently right all the time..!! ;D

Hey. That is the first video I watched from you. You make me smile an learn at the same time:). I might get a bit addicted of your channel now. Thanx!!
LOL, that ending... Linda November is a friend of my family. I got to hang out at her house and listen to her play and sing some of her jingles (including Meow Mix, naturally).
Thank you for the lesson I lost my voice since last end September but I build on a new speaking and singing voice with my logepodie therapist exersice more times everyday Im now in the part looking for twang thank you for explaining I hope I can do a part
There's a similar sound quality in Belcanto singers called "lo squillo" (clanging sound). Have ever listen to Mado Robin? In those times that quality was considered the most important feature to be achieved in a trained voice. Diction was very clear, the sound was brilliant whether you were an alto, a soprano, a tenor or a baritone. Nowadays coloratura sopranos seem mezzos campared to the singers of the beginning of 20th century up to the the thirties... Very nice job! I really agree with you that twang is essentially a feature of pronunciation, and if you don't understand and experiment it as a pronunciation ( as too many italian pop students do) it could be even damaging, when it is not...
I'd love to see your take on "Inalare la voce"! :) Many people actually believe you're supposed to inhale while emitting sound or that it's the same as circular breathing, however I've understood this is not the case...
Thank you so much! This was really helpful and I'm so thankful that you gave the numbers for the warm-up because that makes it so much more convenient for practicing on my own!
Which is interesting to note regardless the use of twang in the oldschool opera singing is how it is possible to sing with a low larynx , Big pharyngeal space and also a narrowed larynx to add core in the sound to project
@@NewYorkVocalCoaching yes, have forwarded your channel also to some fellow singers. I never had formal training but been a singer for a long time. I gotbsome damage and picked some youtube channels some years back. I think I have seen all of them, plus revisits. Pd my vocal nodes are gone btw.
I suffer a bit of air leaking in my chest voice (mostly on the upper notes), is this a good excercise to fix it? Also the first time I did it, I noticed a fatigue sensation in the throat, is that ok?
I came upon your channel while looking up mandolin info. I haven't sung for 30+ yrs and had no desire to even THINk of changing that.anyhow, I have now been glued to my PC because you're channel is excellent. I laughed, I cried..I learned the actual science of singing then I swear, I swooned. twang is not an ugly hillbilly speech impediment :( It's a beautifully melodic sweet molasis pour of a reagional accent. ..just sayin I still think
I know you don't really focus on this styling, but you tend to explain things in such a way that I understand them better. my question pertains to screaming vocals in general, I used to be able to scream very easily and with different tones, but I caught mono, and when I finally recovered, I couldn't do it anymore (at least very well) and all the tutorials out there teach how to do it better, rather than how to do it at all. my singing voice remains untouched however, and I'm unsure why that is.
How do you sing the same note in twang instead of head voice (or falsetto in my case)? how do you adjust "brightness" of the same note? is that even possible? I'm confused.
I learned to twang when I was 14 or so by imitating some soul singers, but I have it up because it was too "feminine sounding" as I'm a natural baritone. Wish I gave it more attention back then instead of abandoning it ha.
