- Mullet fishing 12/27/2011 off Anna Maria Island, Florida. We were cast netting roe mullet about 1 mile offshore. There were about 5 huge schools.
There are two types of roe mullet, red (eggs) and white (sperm). We sorted through and released the white roe mullet. The red roe mullet are sold to East Asian buyers. The back of the boat is filled with red roe mullet.
We landed approx. 3,000 pounds of red roe mullet on this day. - กีฬา
This video brought back memories of day I use to go mullet fishing before the net ban here in North Florida. I would go with several friends and we used a Airboat and search for a run of mullet then circle them with a long gill net and catch 100-200 .lbs every run. We used them for Church Fish Fry fundraiser and always sold out!
That's awesome! What folks don't understand is banning gill nets is what saved the mullet. A cast net is just a drop in the bucket.
Love this. Been doing it 10+ years, sure I have been beside u. Have had some of my best days off anna Maria, and longboat pass. Did 7000 in 2 hours
And I thought i was really lucky when I caught 5 mullet in a cast in my canal... Now i have a true goal. Thanks! XD
mike and mac: hmmm...your sarcasm underwhelms me-lol...in defense of mullet: moved to bradenton, fl from santa barbara 9 yrs ago....ate all the fish that i caught off santa barbara--loved it...love all seafood.....then, discovered smoked and fried mullet in cortez, fl (star fish co.)....smoked mullet, hush puppies and cheese grits washed down with a cold beer on a hot summer day (or warm winter day)....yummmmmmmmm!!
This is awesome and crazy. I love cast net fishing!
Awesome style footage.very encouraging for people to use cast netting rather then fishing with rods... This is no messy bait smell. I like keep up your footage taking, i will keep watch too. good luck.
great catch! im 12 and i love catchin mullet and shrimp in those cast nets
I’m a sport fisherman and some of the comments are from folks who don’t understand the benefits of fishing. The fishing industry is highly regulated for both commercial and sport fishing. The fees we pay for licenses and permits go to the management of all fish species. Any fisherman worth his wait in fish that follows the rules is respectful of the limits and fish species, yes some people ignore the rules and pay a heaven price if caught, these guys are making an honest living and these fish when processed will not go to waste. The roe will be consumed and most likely the fish itself will be used for chum
nothing wrong with this video. I’ve been vegetarian for five years, and I’m enthralled by videos like these because It feeds the population. I don’t eat meat because I don’t agree with the industry’s practices, but I’ve never had many problems with the fish industry. they throw the white out and keep the red to stabilize the population. One day I wish for a more sustainable future where we can be able to feed ourselves like this. I respect fisherman because these are one of the few practices where you go out into nature and hunt yourself, while cows, pigs, and chickens are domesticated and bred in captivity. Not much hunting going on lately, but I like fishing.
You're gonna need a bigger boat! Nice job!
@ruakitoto Thanks! Will definitely be doing more of this!
the kid video taping needed to put the cam dow nand sorta that shit captn was like no we cant catch no more until we sort i dont want dead fish. good capt
Awesome video! Thanks for posting it. I just bought a 5 ft castnet(had to talk my short girlfriend out of only a 3 ft) for catching bait fish and now plan to buy an 8 1/2 ft(Louisiana limit) for snatching up bigger, more edible catches. Your video is encouraging!
Nice. Here we go. Gearing up for another crazy roe season.
I thought these nets where only good in shallow water learned something today I guess lol cool video
impressive. most commenters dont understand what a mullet is, so they think this is endangering the population of mullet in general. Mullet are fucking everywhere, and are not an 'at risk' species whatsoever. not edible nor are they game fish. Point is, you guys fuckin rock at cast nettin
You guys are lucky, it took me 3 hours today to get 1 big mullet and 2 small ones, which is enough for lunch.
Superb catch.
awesome job guys. I live 1 hour north of A.M.Island but would like to know where you made this great pull of mullet???
Awesome Catch! Do you have to have a commercial license to keep more than 50 Per person?
Congrats y'all caught more in two throws than I catch in a day
LOVELY!!!! GREAT CASTING BOYS!!
Hawaiians have been fish-farming mullet for over a thousand years, and mullet ('Anae, 'Ama'ama) are considered a delicacy. Steamed mullet, and fried mullet are delicious. The eggs when salted and dried are called "Bottarga Di Muggine" in Italy, and grated over pasta dishes for extra flavor, and sells for over $100 a pound.
Tilapia are considered trash-fish here in Hawai'i but enjoyed by millions on the mainland US. It all depends on your point of view.
***** Whoever prepared your tilapia didn't know what they were doing. They eat plants and have a lot of bacteria in their stomachs. If their stomach is punctured during cleaning the meat goes bad. If cleaned properly the fish tastes great.
+Ahnko Chee Outdoors Not a fan of Tilapia myself either.....carp is trash fish here where im at but the chinese grind them up and make fish patties and love them......taste like mud to me. It really is what you're use to i guess lmao
+Ahnko Chee Outdoors you guys have a great fishery there ...i would love to just once go to brazil and get the mullet there...
Tilapia are trash fish here too. Mullet historically were food for the poor..
Horest Alers mullets where I'm from were a dodgy haircut in the 80s.
Man i tell ya what..after reading some of these comments im now feeling so bad that my child has to be brought up in such a screwed up world...you see a net full of fish and you think its the end of the world yet you goto the store and buy cow meat by the pounds..mullet is a fish that is on every continent in the world..it is one of the best sources of omega 3s there is..the eggs are delicasies in the asian and south american markets..the majority of them are smoked or fried..most of the time if someone says a fish is a sopefish or real fishy its because theres so many that those who want them can easily get them..and using castnets sucks..when we throw a net we take every size mullet thats there..so it causes unwanted death to males as well as smaller females..using gillnets is the best source of management there is ...as its catching only the older females and letting all the other sizes swim thru...those who have negitive comments please unless you know what your talking about please just save it..and those that think that us commercial fisherman do so well please come join us for a day and see how much fun it is when mullet is only caught for 6 weeks a year..and unless you have other sources of income what you do in 6 weeks is the decision on wether your family eats all year...so cut us some slack and just say hey its not for me but thought id say cool video..or just goto whatever turns you on and watch it...ive never understood why people go to a video and just say the most ignorant ass comments...but then again thats why im not the one doing it...
+Jim Allen not enough informed comments most places on the internet i think......thanx for all the info Jim
Never Mind im gonna try and explain myself a little better...First of all these are black mullet. none of which go from hear to the carolinas. Second, i wish I could only work 6 weeks out of the year. What your seeing happens 3 to 4 times a year. in that day the average boat catches 4 to 6k pounds. Now of those usually only half is females. so thats now 2500# the year of this video i believe the price was .70 a pound for the females and i dont think they even bought the males. so if 1400$ is what you consider a good living then good for you. Now please dont try and act like this is easy work..most of the guys only do this during the season and then go back to there jobs..myself i fished 21 years year round..And im more of a conservationist than you will ever be. most full time guys are very deendent upon the sea for our lively hood so when im guessing some sporty with a hat from the cca decides yall know what fish numbers are because you took a gillnet taken from us and took a sample..well your way isnt worth a shit..if it was jewfish would be off any list, as there killing every reef there is..Now if you want to question my intelligence with a comment thats fine..i have a double Bachelor's degree from the u of Missouri in Economics and Biology. I also am a ATP rated pilot with my private, ifr, commercial, multi and atp with a cfi, ii, and mei instructor adds..With over 4200 hours of flite time. I made 10 times more flying than i ever have fishing but I dont get motivated by money. However, of by chance you want to come out and let me fly you around our state ill be glad to show you what people with more smart than sence is doing to our waters dumping the everglades down south, or oilwells that they couldnt seem to screw a lid on..To this day theres fish that have a oily film on them...one look at that and i promice you the few mullet caught by us isnt worth talking about..if every human alive eat mullet daily you wouldnt put a dent in the mullet population....
nevermind just curious if you have a job that pays you to watch utube all day and type a bunch of shit that didnt makebthe first lick of since.. I dont know the first person who comes to florida to catch finger mullet to smuggle back to the carolinas..They have there own mullet..And lastly a mullet isnt a fish...it has a gizzard...have a great day and hope you load your boat down with whatever brings you excitement...best of luck
Never Mind ...First it is not a chicken, it has a gizzard therefore it could be considered a bird. Next Rick Scott and the rest of the folks including yourself that troll through utube videos just to make comments that are worthless doesnt mean there from missouri. I had a full ride scholarship offer to every Div 1 university in the country. I chose there to continue a family heritage of Mizzou grads. As for the rest of the snide remarks about myself or my education please save them for someone that gives a shit. Just curious as to why your even on this video anyways. Did you come to utube in hopes of learning how to catch mullet, or throw a castnet. If so maybe just say "hey guys if a man wanted to catch 500# of mullet what do i need. i promice you that you would get a responce. However, to act like we are killing off a species lile a mullet is just lack of any true knowledge. BTW my crew and I had 17000 in 4 days this week..so dont know if that makes you cry and want a hug but I slept well knowing thanks to the fine sea around me thT I wont have to worry about my families next meals or bills. But i did the rite thing and I didnt use these awefull castnets..I used 800 yadds of 4 5/8 100 mesh gillnet ..it was a site wosh you could have seen it...just like the googans that use circle hooks and caught everyone i had rite up bebind there eyeballs...
Never Mind your a gator and im a yankee...yet your in a river on a sailboat pulling a boston morgan dinghy. so us rebels use moters and would never buy a 13k johnboat just for the name. ill let you get back to your sailing such a treacherous body of water..i hope your not taching while texting..have fun catching shrimp. hopefully you can get enough for a cocktail if not call me me im not far and i dont have limits on shrimp. good luck on your journey..god hope your heading north..
Awesome catch! Were you using a 12 foot cast net?
what do they sell for a pound? and are they just eating the roe or the whole fish?
Wow that is a great haul. After catching them do you put them in that big box with ice? Then do you sell them? Or do you keep them for food? Sorry to be nosey but it is really interesting. Thanks for the video. Really good luck. I never caught this many fish in a year.
Nice haul. Doesn't get any better than free live bait.
So it looks like they could use a winch for their cast nets. That's pretty bad ass!
Awesome... Great to experience this
smoked mullet the best way to eat them or mullet dip .
Looks like alot of hard work. Mullet is good eating, though. Cant help but wonder how much that catch was worth.
The captain doesn't like when you throw right in front of the boat. You'll understand why when your overboard cutting it outta the prop. Nice catch by the way.
That is a gold mine. In Hawaii, we love to eat mullet and don’t get anywhere near that much in 20 throws.
Nice Cast
Muito bom adoro está pescaria
@stankalmighty Nets are 12' radius and I believe 30 pounds or so
lol i would be the one fish in that net yelling "SWIM DOWN! SWIM DOWN" nice catch
well done...I love eating mullet
man could you make a brief video of throwing a castnet? you casted it like a pro !!
good video ,bountiful catch and a real good eating fish
Very interesting...thanks
Yep, their basically a bait fish, dolphins, redfish, speckled trout all feed on em here. especially in Northwest Florida around Destin where I live, if you catch em in clean water such as a clean bay or the gulf they are a great eating fish.
Nice work with those nets.....pay day ......
Theese comments hurt my heart the fishing world is a cold fucked up world outside the comfort of a boat full of friends basically everyone else is competing and possibly losing . Losers always bitch and complain it’s a fact men go out and provide a man is a provider by definition if you don’t provide you ain’t a man . That being said I respect theese men and what they do to provide for there loved ones
please let me know what size mess & radius nets are you using???
What size nets were you using?
what do u think biggest row mullet weigh do u think one could weigh 8 lbs
do you try to make woven ones because plastic it a pain to sew
how could you take the video and cast the net at the same time?
Would you post a video on how you throw a net?
no shortage of mullet in sarasota/tampa bays.....my little canal off boatdrinksasota bay if full of 'em every day, depending on tides.....time to throw a net...down to my last 4 or 5 of 'em in my freezer.....
east coast is sooo cool .. so many fish and lobster to catch... unlike dry west coast
Very good
How far do u have to let the net sink?
nothing tastes better then smoked mullet....if its done rite....the taste stays with you all day.
How do you know where to throw? Is that just a spot you know tons of mullet are at. Ive been trying to find a good place to net mullet, but I only ever see no more than 6-10 schooling mullet at a time
Its knowing when. What time of year to go where.
mullet run.
Im in Florida so I know there are plenty of mullet here, just dont know where lol. I usually try netting out near weeki wachi though.
Alot of time you can see the mullet moving. I live in Mississippi so the water isnt clear so I just throw alot to catch fish.
man throwin those things is sure hard on the back.
Fresh mullet roe is delicious!!
Freaking awesome!!!!
how big are those nets?
hi guys
Good fishing.
What type of cast net is that you are using? What is the mesh size, weight, diameter etc?
thanks
12' probably 20 pounds and mesh size 2 5/8 or so
how much money did u make
What is the capacity of those nets?
Wow amazing
hello , mullet roe season was finished now? I'm looking for roe mullet suppliers.
where do yall go fishing
love Fisher !!!!!
And Daniel, this is not raping the waters. This is an a dying bred of workers. I work in a fish house and deal with sixth/ seventh generation Florida fishermen along with first timers. These fish only roe for about a month (Thanksgiving to Christmas). I am the world's biggest bleeding heart, but compare this to Long Liners.... want to bring up a point, put some validity in it.
What brand nets Y'all using?
how much did you make off this catch?
Our schools are no where near that large. Even if you stayed all day every day for a week. Steamed with shaved ginger and green onions ( then drizzle hot peanut oil over shaved ginger/green onions) or steamed with black bean sauce is how we like to eat them.
good job! but are you allowed to catch fishes like this?
what kind of net is that
what do you do with it all
That is crazy!!!
have to ask what did you do with all that mullet???
Nathan Salazar sell them
dam where are the other 450 boats
I personally fish for mullet and it's funny to see people trying to act like a know-it-all when they have no idea what they are talking about. For everyone thinking that it's illegal or they are throwing dead fish back, the fish are alive and it's called commercial fishing, the bag limit is not 100 fish. And no, the red row doesn't go for 8 dollars. All I know is that when we sell the fish, red roe is around a dollar per pound.
+Luke Purcell word! no actually the roe is worth 8$ a pound if you split your own fish...but we get paid by the whole fish weight
Pornhub how
@@jimallen136 and processed roe can go for over 60$ a ounce
Good catch. Post more videos of row season where there are more than one boat with cast netting. We would love to see that.
@spazzymagee23 Early in the season (Late November/Early December) it will get more than $1 per pound for high grade red roe. I believe it was .80 cents a pound on this day, since the markets were a bit flooded. It's really all supply and demand to East Asian buyers.
how much money do you get for 500 pounds? I know its like ten bucks for like 3 smoked mullet..
+Nik Lyons out of that 400 pounds there mite be 150 # that is females..i think this day paid 1.20# so that was a little over a 100$
What size mesh/net?
It's the roe.. we catch for.... the males... 5 to 10 per pound... whole fish weighed..... the females. .. full of .. what we call roe... we received anywhere from a dollar a pound to two... depending on quality of fish. .... I know. .. cause I fished these waters for over 12 yrs. .. every year... commercially... it's an honest buisness. .. highly regulated by local wildlife officers. .. FWC..... Very hard work for most.... for guys like us.... it's passion. ...
+Keith Folce your ellipsi just gave me cancer, stop typing like that and just get the point
Hahaahaa!!!! :)
muito peixe e bom
bravo................
the water changed colors for me?
Gizzard time!
Where cant u catch these fish I'm in thunder bay
Nice video and nice catch. Too bad you can only use cast nets.
PS. Awesome catch!
também so pescador Dr angra dos Reis
What are the East Asian selling them for, bait, food or fertilizer? , regards
They eat the red roe. Had a friend come back from Taipei, said they were selling red mullet roe at the airport.
how meny fiseh is it
:)
Is it cold
monofilament.... I love saying that word... Man I miss the cast netting days, and the clamming. I should move back to FL.
Looks like he had finish all the fish out here
do you need a fishing commercial license for that ?
*hits blunt* imagine dying and the first thing you see is all the lives you've taken and they were all alive in the spirit world and can speak your lang. and see you, if I was them is have a heart attack and I don't even see that being possible..
