Finally, someone who put together my two favorite methods of throwing a castnet without putting it in my mouth or over my shoulder! Thanks for sharing simplicity!
The only thing more impressive than your cast throw is the quality of your instruction. This is by far the best instruction I've ever seen. Keep up the good work!
I've watched dozens of cast net videos and never would have imagined watching a video that is more than 10 minutes, yet here I was watching all 23 minutes because of how great the video was. Awesome instruction and examples of multiple styles of nets. I have multiple of the EZ Throw, and one of the fun things with them is you don't even need the second hand - just spin and whip it out there with your dominant hand, after draping the net over the ring, for pretty easy pancakes. I also have many regular cast nets as well and appreciate the non mouth/shoulder techniques you taught. :)
Great job - much better explanation than others. I particularly appreciate that you help us diagnose what is wrong rather than just show us the "right" way.
I seen plenty of videos of how to use a cast net and was still having problems. Once I viewed your video, I went out and was throwing pancakes. Great instructional video!
I'm right handed but have a bad left shoulder - this method is perfect vs holding everything in my left hand and doing a backhanded throw! Awesome method!
I’ve tried to cast a net many times, with many of the different methods, and I have never gotten it to work. What I think others have left out is pulling back your left hand when releasing from your right hand. I threw 2 pancakes right away. I cannot thank you enough Captain.
I finally got it. You shown the best way by standing next to your dad! That showed how to throw it and collect it the right way. Never seen another like it! Thanks brother and tight lines!!
Awesome video! Really clear instructions on how to place each part of the net in your hands. So much clearer than any of the others I have watched. Thank you.
Still awesome Captain Cody. This and your other video have made the cast net possible for me. I'm still a novice but wouldn't even attempt it without using Capt. Cody's method. Thanks so much dude!
Thanks Frank! I tried to slow down the demo in this video and show it a bunch of times. Throwing a cast net can be quite fun and hopefully you catch some good bait!
Thanks for this video. I have always been able to throw nets up to 6' with no problem, but that method would not work my heavy 7' net. After watching your instruction and practicing in the yard I'm now throwing it just fine Thanks again.
Hi, this is the best instruction video I ever seen. In Italy, we have much more complicated techniques, but the ones you have shown are very easy and more effective. Can you please advise the brand and model of the larger net?
Thanks, glad it was helpful! In the video description I show an article I wrote with a bunch of good nets. The 8ft net is a simple net by with steel waits 3/8 inch mesh by Goture. It is a good low cost option.
You make it look so easy. I'm trying to get it and definitely struggling. I guess I'm just going to have to keep practicing. I think I'm struggling with the left hand part but I'm also having issues with it flipping upside down
Your technque of casting net seems to be effective bcz you tied the rope on your right hand it's easier to learn from you then people who ties rope on their left hand _i believe the next time i will be sucessfull_ thank you for the tutorial ❤
I watched this old man on TH-cam easily cast a damn net by holding the net straight up and grabbing it waist high which is about half and holding that in his right hand and then grabbing two weights and holding those also in his right hand and then grabbing two more weights and barley putting them in his left pocket and then he casted the net with his right hand and that shit was perfect every damn time lol. You gotta love old heads and their techniques. If i didn't explain it that good sorry about that
Thanks! Yeah, panel net designs are the highest quality. In the video link, I wrote and article showing the nets I use. It depends on what type of bait you are trying to catch to determine the net you need. If you are just in shallow water less than two feet almost any net will work. If you are in deep water trying to catch bigger baits then you need a professional cast net.
Hey Cap'n Cody, Really good, maybe the best turorial Ive seen on throwing a cast net. Im having an anoying problem with my 4' net. At short and longer distances, the net in shalow water, has a nicely shaped bottom (closest to me), but the section fartherest from me is bell shaped; At the fartherest part, there is narrow rounded top and is caved in on right and left sides. Its symmetrical. Ive looped this TH-cam vid so I can see details of your throws. Ive tried many many combinations of the setup and throws and my best throws always have the bell shape. Give me some things to try to get the traditional pancake.
Thanks, I am guessing you are using the second method here! I would still suggest pulling back with your left hand while throwing forward with your right hand just like the first method. The motion should cause the net to rotate counter clockwise just a bit. This centripetal force helps get the net to open evenly. You can even twist/rotate your right hand just a bit to make the net rotate in a slight counter clockwise motion. Let me know if that helps.
That would be a good videos to make. It really comes down to knowing were and when bait is around in your area. Sometimes you have to catch it at first light, other times you can use chum. If you see diving birds the birds are likely on bait, you just have to see what kind of bait. Where are you located and what kind of bait are you trying to catch. In general finding bait in shallow water makes it easier to catch. Just make sure you are not throwing in structure where the cast net will get snagged and tangled.
It is nice to have soft nets that open easy. I find that new nets throw really well just how they come. The fabric softener trick is probably a good way to fix an old stiff net. To be honest though I have not tried. As older nets get damaged from snags and big fish swimming through them they are more difficult to open easily. The fabric softener is something I should try! Thanks for the idea.
Ive been using this method but i struggle with consistency and cannot reliably pancake all the time. Any tips? I mostly get the net open about 75 to 85 percent of the way.
Well, I do make the suggestions in the video. If the net is low quality or old sometimes that is just the best you can do. Sometimes I get a new quality net vs my old beat-up net and I am surprised at how nice it opens. Obviously, make sure it is tangle-free as that is typically the issue.
In the description I wrote and article showing lots of good net options. The main net used in this video was an 8-foot Goture net with 3/8 inch mesh. Good luck catching bait!

Hello. I discuver a problem coming for those who catch bait in a lagun. found that there will be a very big construction around a corner of a lagun that will block many that need to pass around the corner of that lagun to cath sardine as bait and I am to confront the goverment and the investors to present them a solution for all those that will be blocked to reach the other site of the lagun to catch the bait.. it can turn tough handling with them to handle this manner bud need to..
Cap'n Cody, Actually I'm working on the first method. I'm 85 and dont have the strength to throw the second method very well. Your idea to rotate my right hand counterclockwise and pulling back with the left hand got rid of the bell shape. Then I started throwing a backward D. I found by trial and error that if I make the two "loads' about level with each other, the net shape became more circular. Think I'm on the right track. Do you have rules of thumb how load sizes left vs right and load levels left vs right affect net shape? If you do please share. BTW If you have any suggestions on how to get started throwing the 4' net with the second method, please share them as well. I like the simplicity of the second method. John
You seem to be on the right track. That is great you are out there catching you own bait at 85! 1/4 to1/3 collected in the left hand would be good with a 4 foot net. With a 4 foot net though I defiantly think the second method is easier. That is what I thought you were using.
I’m using your method with a 12 ft net and it’s great but the right side of the net folds in on landing. What am I doing wrong? Not sure how to correct it. Thanks for the video. It’s helped me a lot. By far the easiest way to throw.
Well I have another video where I show this same method but I am also using a 12-foot net in that video. I would say watch that and try and load and throw in a similar way. As always make sure you are tangle free!
Most of the time, yes. You can pull a bit early if you think the net will get snagged. Just do not pull to fast as the net will lift over all the bait.
Hmm what size cast net, and which method. The first method should work if you are short! The second method works with nets that have a radius that is 1 foot shorter than you. So if you are 5-foot you can throw a 4-foot net.
Thanks Troy, I have an article in the video descriptions where I talk about the best cast nets. In shallow water most nets will work, when trying to catch larger baits in deeper water is when you need a quality heavy net. The cheap one I am using in this video is made by Goture. The 12 foot net I throw was a betts old salt. I hope this helps, good luck catching bait!
It is hard to say without seeing you throw. Make sure the net is 100 percent untangled each time. Make you are holding the proper part of the net in your right and left hands.
@@CaptainCody7 in some cases i don't. Like where there's alot of rock or fallen trees. But off a boat im usually barefoot anyways (or crocks). I've tied off to the kleat of the boat too. Anything is better then watching your net sink to the bottom then realizing the cuff slipped off or wasn't attached in the first place. For the record I've only lost 2 lol I did retrieve 1
@@justingulick6747 I guess it could slip off but I have have not had an issue with that. Sometimes if I think something big might be around, I hold it in my hand so I can let go if needed rather than being attached. I have not had to let go yet though. Most of the time big fish like tarpon will just punch right through the net though.
Learned this method when I was around 10 years old. Most of my friends put the lead in their mouths. I never liked that method because of the lead and because of whatever you were casting in is now in your mouth. The triple load is an excellent technique for bigger than 8 ft but you get all boogered up after the first cast. I can throw my 10ft net like the video here. Heavy, so make each cast count!
As many times as I viewed this video and others of yours, I cannot throw this so that it opens up all the way, It sometimes partially opens and sometimes gets tangled. I have viewed and tried this technique of yours over 50 times and it has not once opened up all the way with an 8-foot cast net.
Well it might just be that then net is still a bit tangled. Once it gets tangled it takes more work to get it 100 percent tangle free. Or if the net is old the net does not open as smoothly. Sometimes getting a new net helps. Throwing a cast net does take lots of practice so you might also just be doing something slightly wrong. Hard to say without watching you throw.
Thank you for replying. I am going to again try it. I think the problem I have is in the throw. I end up with Banana throws and have a problem fully opening the net. This video seems a lot better than the other one that I was following. I have been throwing a 6-foot net successfully with my left hand so changing hands could make the difference in the throw that I am used to on my hip swing and throw.@@CaptainCody7
WOW!!!!! Capt Cody!!!! Following this video I was throwing 80 to 90% open! I am very happy. With small hands that are a bit arthritic, I will have to practice more. Thank you, thank you. I highly recommend your method. I have tried many other videos and methods and you are the best!!!
I think I say in the video somewhere. In this video they were mostly nets by Goture. I also show which ones I used in the article linked in the video description. Thanks for watching!
The PVC-coated weights are steel. These work well if you are throwing in shallow water. If you are throwing in deep water for bigger baits, you need a large heavy net that sinks fast. So it depends. Even with a 12-foot net with 1.5 pounds per foot you still need to track the bait down and throw the net the correct way. Large baits are very fast so sometimes you have to push them in shallow or deep so they are not scared from the splash of the net. I hope this helps, good luck catching bait!
I have tried and tried your method but always end up with the net landed in the water upside down. I’m sure I’m doing something wrong but no clue as to what.😤
Sorry to hear that. I bet you will get it if you keep trying. What size net? I would say make sure you are collecting your net with your dominant hand. I use my right hand to hold most of the net and left hand to pull back. Also once it gets tangled it is lots of work to properly untangle it but it has to be untangled to open properly.
@@CaptainCody7 I’m using a 7’ net and I’m 6’ 4” tall same as you. You are correct it takes a minute to get the net untangled once it lands upside down🤪
* * F.Y.I.: Known as the "Uncle Thevenow" (Thev-in-oh) method of "dry" casting, it was developed back in the early 1980s by Thevenow Harold DeLaney (1927-2009) of Avon Park, Florida. The technique has only recently become widely known and utilized. Namesake of "Tommy Joseph Thevenow", a 1920/30s pro baseball player, Uncle Thevenow was an imposing blonde figure, quite a character, with a dry sense of humor. He was considered the best bass and snook fisherman in the region. NOW YOU KNOW THE REST OF THE STORY !!!
Yeah, it does. Have you ever seen the bunker in NJ. They are not over fished by people with a cast net. The do have some big commercial boat that harvest them in the millions of pounds.
Sorry if you could not follow. The hand with the net is pulled back to then allow the net to be thrown forward with some force. It is a swinging motion but the net thrown straight forward. The hand has a firm grip on the net and is released once the net starts pulling forward away from the hand.
Finally, someone who put together my two favorite methods of throwing a castnet without putting it in my mouth or over my shoulder! Thanks for sharing simplicity!
Thanks, I was wanting to make this video for awhile. Throwing a cast net should be fun. Thanks for watching!
@@CaptainCody7 It's a ton of fun! Anyone who plays golf can relate that perfect pancake to that perfect golf shot. And, no spending money on bait!

Well I have another video where I show this same method but I am also using a 12-foot net in that video. I would say watch that and try and load and throw in a similar way. As always make sure you are tangle free!
@@CaptainCody7 will do, thank you
Do you let the net reach the bottom after your cast?
Most of the time, yes. You can pull a bit early if you think the net will get snagged. Just do not pull to fast as the net will lift over all the bait.
love to see the kids out there, but gotta loose the watch. It will snag the net
Yeah, that is a good point. Thanks for watching! No pun intended. ha ha
I think wearing stilts is the answer to my problem. From the looks, I’m throwing right, but I’m short.
Hmm what size cast net, and which method. The first method should work if you are short! The second method works with nets that have a radius that is 1 foot shorter than you. So if you are 5-foot you can throw a 4-foot net.
Hey Captain Cody, great video you’ve put together here. Wondering what brand net these are your using in the video?
Thanks Troy, I have an article in the video descriptions where I talk about the best cast nets. In shallow water most nets will work, when trying to catch larger baits in deeper water is when you need a quality heavy net. The cheap one I am using in this video is made by Goture. The 12 foot net I throw was a betts old salt. I hope this helps, good luck catching bait!
I'm doing it exactly how you show for the 8 ft and it does not work.. I'm so confused
It is hard to say without seeing you throw. Make sure the net is 100 percent untangled each time. Make you are holding the proper part of the net in your right and left hands.
Who designed these nets?
A bunch of different companies make them. There is an article about it in the video description.
I've always put the wrist cuff on my ankle
Ha ha that seems a bit more difficult! If you are barefoot though I guess it would work!
@@CaptainCody7 Damn yeah thats a good practice in waters like that. I've only thrown in a couple lakes and a couple river's.
Nice, yeah exactly, tripple load works well to open the net but it makes catching bait a messy chore rather than a fun task. Thanks for watching!
@@CaptainCody7 first video I've seen using this technique. You added a little something I'm going to try!
BTW, I am 78 and refuse to act like an old man. I sure have enjoyed fishing all of my life.
WOW!!!!! Capt Cody!!!! Following this video I was throwing 80 to 90% open! I am very happy. With small hands that are a bit arthritic, I will have to practice more. Thank you, thank you. I highly recommend your method. I have tried many other videos and methods and you are the best!!!
Hey Cody. What is the brand of the cast net you’re throwing in this video?
I think I say in the video somewhere. In this video they were mostly nets by Goture. I also show which ones I used in the article linked in the video description. Thanks for watching!
Let everyone know not to use the Walmart pvc coated leads they sink too slow
Very Cool! How do you know that? Did you learn from Uncle Thevenow?
Lmao… Big fish means you didnt see the 4 foot bull shark
Ha ha if you throw a net a lot you would be surprised what ends up in there.
Overfishing stints best.
Yeah, it does. Have you ever seen the bunker in NJ. They are not over fished by people with a cast net. The do have some big commercial boat that harvest them in the millions of pounds.
Another incomplete video. Show people what the hand with the net does. That's a movement that nobody talks about
Sorry if you could not follow. The hand with the net is pulled back to then allow the net to be thrown forward with some force. It is a swinging motion but the net thrown straight forward. The hand has a firm grip on the net and is released once the net starts pulling forward away from the hand.
