    I'm not surprised by the amount of vegans in the comments telling Kate that her lifestyle doesn't have an impact on the environment. Stop using someone's compassion against them. I'm sure she's well-aware of the effects of consuming animal products, as she was vegetarian and has probably done avid research on following a more eco-friendly lifestyle. She has made the choice to consume animal products. Writing a bunch of comments saying the same thing over and over isn't going to change her mind.
    This is coming from someone who is a vegan. Leave people be. Put your energy into being a better vegan and KINDLY give information to those who are unaware. Forcing things down people's throats is unnecessary.

      People saying their opinions is not showing something to someones throat. it just removes the real meaning that saying has. Abused animals and some people lived that fucked up experience. Not this woman.

      reemi1998 YES. So much yes. Going zero waste does a world of good. Vegans aren't the only people striving to better the world. I'm a vegan too, striving to be zero waste. Unless she was unfairly bashing vegans (and even if she was), I don't see why people think shaming or guilting others does any good.

    First of all it is very refreshing to find a less/zero waste person who is not Vegan. Not that there is anything wrong with being vegan of course. I personally can't be vegan, it gives me a lot of health problems. It's nice to see that there are others like me who are doing what they can to have less of an impact on the planet. We may not be able to go as far as some other people but that does not mean what we do has no meaning. Second would you please do a video on how you make homemade chicken stock out of the left over bones? Thank you so much for being amazing and please keep the wonderful videos coming. :)

    I don't compost myself yet (want to eventually), for now though I have a metal bowl in my freezer that I put all my scraps in during the week, then at the end of the week I give them to a friend of mine who has a farm. She uses them to feed her animals and her garden. :-)

    Funny you also ended up with the Opinel knives... I came across them about 2 years ago in our organic food shop and I've been using them ever since. They are of good quality, nice looking - and come at a very reasonable price, I think.
    Thanks for recommending the Jamie Oliver book. I'm a huge fan of his, yet did not know this particular book so far... I do like cooking, but I find myself going through spells of very low spirit in that department. I've ordered the book now, hoping for it to bring me back to the basics and a bit of simplicity. It might just pull me out of the current low. ;-)
    I totally love your videos, they are a massive source of inspiration. Thank you!

    Before I throw a half of used lemon to the compost bin I always wipe my stainless steel sink with it (cut in half) and as I use lemon every day, my sink is always shiny without much effort.

    • @lifeindigitalhues
      @lifeindigitalhues 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should think about doing that way more often as well! I use lemons and limes a lot, but half the time I forget to use them as cleaning products after cooking. Thanks for the extra reminder!

      Marloes Bornebroek Just make a habit. Think lemon = doesn't go to the bin straight away but makes one stop before. Sometimes I have more than one I keep it in the fridge for this purpose. Have a nice day.

    I'm a Brit living in France and the mentality is quite different. There isn't any bulk options locally but I do go to the catering supermarket for dry things. Hearing you talk about having to buy 3 peppers at once is an eye opener. In my local supermarket, 95% of the veg is loose and I do think it makes a big difference, I can buy in smaller amounts and less packaging. Maybe I should try and take a container to the cheese shop so they don't wrap it in pastiche paper. Thanks for video.

    My "use it up" tip is to be sure to get all the good out of a bottle, jar or from my blender. So, I'll use the last tablespoons of peanut butter in the jar to make a batch of spicy peanut sauce (right in the same jar). Another example - when blending up sesame seeds for tahini, I'll scrape out as much as possible, and then make a batch of hummus in the same blender , no need to wash it out, since tahini is an ingredient. Mustard left in the jar? Make a honey-mustard salad dressing right in the jar... get it? It works great, and uses up the last bit of everything!

    Was wondering if you've ever used soap nuts? I have just discovered them through the power of TH-cam and learned that you can use them for laundry, dishes, hair, body and cleaning. And when the nuts (seeds, really) are 'used up', you can compost them. Zero waste! And no chemicals to worry about.

      EvelineUK While soap nuts are good for the environment, they're low in supply and are increasing in demand, making the product increasingly expensive for local people to afford (especially in India). So instead, the local people succumb to using chemical laundry detergents which are used and washed into streams and rivers and pollute not only the environment, but are polluting their source of drinking water as well. Just thought I'd share this info for anyone wanting to buy soap nuts.

    Hi, there! I love your channel so much, but I had a question. How do you know when all the Zero-Waste Holidays are? I always run into events like Organic September and Zero Waste Week months after they already happened. I'm trying to prep for Plastic-Free July in advance just so I don't miss it, now that I'm aware it exists. Do the dates and themes change? Is there a secret underground society that determines when these events happen? Please help! I'm very new and I love holidays of all sorts! Thanks!

    Do you have a video where you talk more about your blender? I got a Vitamix for my birthday, and so far I don't really like it but I know that everyone does. Maybe it's because I'm more used to a food processor. I really want to like it!

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coccinelle why don't you like your Vitamix?

    • @Coccinelf
      @Coccinelf 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jocelyne Clémençon Well, like I said, I'm pretty sure that it's because I'm used to my food processor and I don't have enough place to own both a food processor and a blender so I don't like the fact that the Vitamix can't replace my food processor. Anyway, my biggest dislike is that unless I'm doing something very watery, there is so much food waste! The impossibly hard scraping and the food wasted are both driving me mad. If you are used to use a blender, I'm sure you will love it!

    Just a question what do zero waste people do with broken appliances that sort of thing? My new partner and I have both been through nasty divorces and I have ended up with not even my personal belongings while he got left with all the broken, damaged stuff. We have been getting things we do need from second hand places as much as possible and as I have always been earth conscious follow the 5 R's but we are struggling with the best ways to deal with stuff that doesn't fit with the 5 R's

      Kaylene Clark hi!! Depending where you live you *may* be able to recycle these items. It may take some research but some recycling facilities will take in electronics and appliances and dispose of them in the most responsible way possible. It may also work (if you budget and needs fit this) to see if there's anywhere you can take these items to be repaired. Sometimes things break and it's a quick fix of replacing a part or two. Of course not everything can be repaired so someone's recycling is necessary. Best of luck to finding options that work for you!!

      +Nadie Komarova yes I found some small Muslim bags I can try using (ironically in the closet of my parents who hoard lots of random knick knacks) I'll have to call my stores and ask about using jars that seems complicated to me with the weight. Thanks for your reply. I stumbled on some zero waste videos and asked my self why I wasn't doing this!? Glad to start my journey with you!

    • @kingdomrootedmama
      @kingdomrootedmama 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kaylie Ortman jars are very simple to use. You can get a weightier to have at home and weigh the before hand and write them on tape and tape on to the jar or in stores you go start to the cash register they weigh your jars and your off to shop

    • @PollyBunch

    One thing I'm curious about is: Most go zero waste because they care about the environment/ planet. Why don't they / you consider going Vegan? Being Vegan makes bigger difference than zero waste, and ofc It's best to be both.
    Not trying to be critical, I myself is a Vegan who is thriving the zerowaste life style. I'm just wondering how one can care about the environment and not consider changing ones diet. Eating meat and dairy has a huge impact on the planet.

      I think by insisting people follow a strict lifestyle change like going vegan or even vegetarian when that's not where they're at, they dig their heels in more and are less likely to change. But by encouraging people to make small changes, or consider the options available, then they are more likely to actually do it..and getting a lot of people to make small changes adds up to a bigger effect than a small handful of people making a drastic change.

    • @Vici233
      @Vici233 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my experience and from what I have heard, going vegan is either a lsow process of cutting down on consumption or it is an overnight change (the latter was the case for me). Either way, I feel like every vegan has this sort of "aha-moment" where they suddenly realize that going vegan is just what they obviously need to do. Before that realization, people will almost allways be resistant to change. Often people will feel like something will be taken away from them if they went vegan. I had that fear when I first started out. For me, the opposite was the case. I still eat everything that I used to eat, just vegan versions of things. I never knew how many amazing companies were out there making to many amazing vegan ice cream flavors and mock meats and cheeses and all that sort of stuff. Plus I learned so many more recepies and I really feel like I improved my health with those. If we could just make people see that its not that hard and its not that scary, that would really help. At the same time, we should be supportive and not expect perfection from everyone. We should encourage people when they make small changes, as those an lead to big ones.

    • @caterinacedolini2799

      vegetarianism cant be wrong for anyone becaus eif done right there are no nutrients lacking from removing animal products. I was anaemic and im vegan, there is no nutrient that cant be found in plant foods. if she 'got sick' she just wasnt putting enough effort to eat sensibly.

    • @seraphimdagger
      @seraphimdagger 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Caterina Cedolini everyone's body is different. i'm not saying that being vegetarian or vegan is wrong. just that some people cannot do that. she kept at it for a few years and her health still declined. that's not a lack of effort. that's just her body saying hey, this isn't working. i'm glad that you can be vegan and anemic. you are living what you believe. but what works for you, doesn't work for everyone. and they shouldn't be brow-beaten for their choice.

    • @caterinacedolini2799
      @caterinacedolini2799 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      there is absolutely no scientific evidence showing people cant physically be vegan, there is no nutritional or physical excuse im sorry but research shows it is the best diet and it cannot be her body not being okay with that, if anything if she was still eating dairy that might have been the problem. everyone is different and everyone has different nutritional needs, but nobody has a requirement for a 'food' group, there is no such thing. whatever she was feeling, with a blood test she could figure out what exactly she was missing and getting that from plants. i cant not 'brow-beat' who takes the lives of innocent beings when there is no evidence to show that there is an actual NEED to do it, tearing cow mothers apart from their children to take their breastmilk, grinding up baby live chicks for eggs and torturing sentient beings.

    • @sarahcriswell6689
      @sarahcriswell6689 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      caterina cedolini so if there’s no need for just one food group by your response then by that logic we don’t need vegetables or fruit food group. See how silly that logic sounds.
