  • From the Notre-Dame and Saint Marks Cathedrals to Big Ben and Westminster Abbey. They are all symbols of the western world. But according to a new book, Gothic architecture might not be as European as we think.

When I studied architecture, I was never taught to see these beautifully proportioned buildings and the subtleness of the adornment in architecture. The more I see, the more I wish; if I could be lucky enough to design something even close in my life. Islamic architecture of the middle ages is an inspiration for all architects regardless of their identity and ethos.

Bro.. I'm trying to incorporate it into my thesis which is based on mappila community of Malabar.
But I am just not able to wrap my head around the depth of Islamic architecture.
I'm trying to blend it with vernacular architecture of Malabar.

I too have studied architecture. Diana Darke is not very precise. Much of Christian architecture predates Islamic architecture. Europeans were explorers in Africa, Middle East, India, China, etc. Romans, Greeks, Vikings, Celts, Mongols, Chinese, Japanese, Hindus, etc were learning engineering and mathematics from each other. Muslim civilisations came many many centuries later.

@@pinklady7184 you are right & wrong.
Muslims were never ashamed to credit the previous civilizations for their contributions & always were honest in admitting that in their works.
Infact, Islam considers itself as the continuation & correction (as their scriptures have been corrupted) of previous sacred traditions revealed to mankind, from the same eternal source of truth.
Diana Darke is right regarding gothic architecture & she has also mentioned the earlier influences in Islamic architecture.

the engineering and most of that architechture is pre-islamic .. when the arabs and turks invaded the middle east they used what was Already There to build their empire .. remember that North Africa , anatolia and the Levant were originaly christian lands for 600 years with amazing cities ... islam only changed the artistic design , the reason why the muslim golden age collapsed is because this Knwoledge stolen by Conquest Expired because no significant inventions were being added .. Europe however was kept under siege by the muslims for 9 centuries and it still progressed and ended breaking free in the 16th century and began the colonial age .. that's the difference between a culture that built it's golden age with stolen knowlege Vs a culture that continiously progresses

When the Christians took back Andalusia from the Muslims, they kept with them many Muslims builders and « architects » and when they went to Central America, they took with them these Muslim architects, builders and massons (maçons). This is why many churches in Mexico have clearly Islamic style and decorations as base…

One has to realize the obvious -it was the Saracens who based their architecture on Christian architecture in the first place -the first mosques were based on Christian basilicas like that in Damascus -the basic domed mosque design was adopted from Christian Byzantine architecture -the horseshoe arch as seen so prominently in Moorish architecture in Spain -especially in the Cordoba mosque -was taken from Christian Visigothic architecture -there are christian Visigothic churches with horse shoe arches that long predate the Moorish conquests and the most obvious of all was the Ottoman Turkish architecture which is almost totally derived from the vast 6th century Christian basilica called the Santa Sophia in Istanbul which has been copied over and over again in the Islamic world.Christian medieval architecture derives far more from ancient Roman(Romanesque) and Byzantine exemplars than from the Islamic world. The flying buttress principle which is the mainstay of Gothic architecture allowing for the building of vast floating Gothic vaults and of incredible stretches of stained glass is nowhere to be found in Islamic architecture -it's from Roman and Byzantine architypes or original to the great French medieval architects like the abbot Suger who designed the saint Denis basilica in paris -the first Gothic church.

I’m an architectural student, nothing that is written in her book especially the Gothic style which heavily drawn its inspiration from the Romanesque architecture from Islam. There are some small elements that that are eastern, this was because when the crusaders went to the holy land, that’s where Europeans took some of the Christian churches architecture like the pointed archway. Not Islam, nothing is similar, from Flying Buttress, the rib vaults, Rose-tainted Windows, and the dome (Which Islam copied from Hagia Sophia the Greek Orthodox Christians) and even the spire. The gothic Architecture was refined by European stone masons, and sculptures NOT Muslims or Islam. If we compare typical mosque/madrasah and the Saint Paul Cathedral or the Reims Cathedral, they’re both the same! Diana Darke never even mentioned that the ottomans took the Dome design from the Hagia Sophia in her book but she mention “supposedly” Europeans stole everything from Islam, this is where it biased and unreliable.
YOU are WRONG again. The Academic dress (règalia or Academicus robe) such as the robes, hoods or gowns that Europeans or many students around the world wear in Universities during graduation ceremonies were a tradition dating back 950 years ago in Christianity before Islam. This was worn traditionally during when the first Latin ponitifical Universities was founded in Europe by the Roman Catholic Church, where monks, clergyman and priests wear them.
Universities ARE NOT Muslim invention. 80% of the worlds Universities all came from Christianity. The first university were formed in 1088 in Italy. It is the church in Europe that ran educational institutions such as which gave rise to many people Universities, even the word university came from Latin “Universitas”. Stop trying to claim everything in Europe because you can’t match up to Christian history.

Look the Cathredals of 6th and 7th centuries in British Isles and Ireland. Gothic architecture is amalgamation of Romansque and Nordic stone arts with a touch of Italian Renaissance. Romansque came from Romans especially the Byzantines. I would rather say Arabs took much from Byzantine architecture, making domes, setting long columns, making archs Arabs didn't knew these engineering. They learned it from Syrians and Persians, Arabs were masters in making rock architecture example Petra, Palmyra, Bostra in Yemen you will find highrises which is Marvellous in Medieval era.
