      Me too, almost finishing it, I'm at the part where Jahan is stealing books from Takiyuddin's observatory before it's demolished. A very nice and captivating book, I must add. Quite a shame that I lived in Ankara Turkey for 7 years, traveled to Istanbul several times but never quite got to visit the grand Sulemaniye mosque.

I went recently and truth is that the best things in Istanbul are the ones that the Greeks left behind, the city looks like it hasn't made a single step forward since then, too many cheap multi-storey buildings around, residents who look like they have come from deep Anatolia and live 15 persons per flat. It looks like gypsy-land, if people were more civilised that would be a great city, but I was feeling like I was in an overpopulated cheaply-made middle-east city with some traces of historical greek glory, I left with a great feeling of disappointment.... and that it's a city that once had great culture that is now resided by the wrong residents, right city to wrong people

    Years ago when I was a young child 9 years old. I was interested in Russian Orthodoxy. One evening still as I was nine years old , near sunset I saw the star and crescent in the sky. As years past, I accepted Al Islam. Now at 70 years old , I will say this. I may not be able to visit Turkey and visit the Magnificent Hagia Sophia. I have many friends and students who are Eastern Orthodox. I would like to have seen the Hagia Sophia open at times for those of us whom are Muslim for prayers and at times for Christians for their periods of worship. Either way, the influences from said mosque have obvious ties to Hagia Sophia. Study the components of a mosque, they aren't unique, they borrowed from byzantine and Persian architecture, and mixed parts up.

      It was certainly hugely influential in subsequent mosque construction in Istanbul, Turkey and the Balkans under Ottoman Turkish rule. But the influence was much more indirect in the rest of the Muslim world. When the Arab armies conquered Palestine and Syria in the seventh century CE, they encountered a lot of churches that had been constructed in the same general Byzantine architectural style as the Hagia Sophia (albeit on a smaller scale). Since the Arabs previously had little in the way of any highly developed architectural traditions, the Muslims adopted this for their mosques and this spread around the world with the spread of Islam.

    Christianity was not showing through. The Christian elements in Hagia Sofia were preserved by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, simply because they were holy for many and pieces of art which make them a part of historical heritage.
    Unlike Europeans, Ottomans never pretend like they were the ones who brought civilization wherever they go. They built upon the existing heritage and this made them marvelous. So the mosaics in Hagia Sofia could have been removed but they were not. This is the BBC. You should do more accurate researches before telling the story to the world. Maybe you prefer to ignore the facts to claim a right on it.
    Sinan was only born in a Christian family. He was raised as a Muslim and gained all of his skills and vision as a well educated Ottoman. Even though he was neither an ethnic Turk nor born as a Muslim, he was given the best opportunities of the time. That's because he was the best. This is how you rule an empire.

Turkey could have become a more important nation if it followed a modern set of mind, leaving religion at home and accepting their European background to developp on a more Greco-Roman ways and less on their arabo-Turks life. But it's never to late. Especially that the great majority of them have European blood for a minority with arabo-Turks blood.

      @AJ Then just like sugar compare the truth in what ‘scientists’ say and compare the truth in which religion is true, not based on “feelings” but purely based on what is evidently true or not. You can begin with the Quran. Evaluate it and break it down scientifically and ask yourself is this from a man in the 7th century or is this from a higher intelligence, why would it be from a higher intelligence? There are numerous verses in the Quran which has facts that we have only recently discovered, but there is much more.
      After reading it then come back to this though and ask your self, isn’t this also objectively true? And if not then why not?

      @Haider Ibn Akhlaq you know I wrote some stuff and deleted it because I don't want to offend you and put hate on all Christians in your heart. I was born and raised in a country half Christian , half Muslim. We Lovel and respect each other. When extremists in both sides come, we protect each other . So.. I can't generalize and hate all Muslim. So should you. Christianity if lived rightly, It is entirely is based on Love, forgiveness, charity and compassion. But many lives the name only. I see the same in Islam. What Turkish did this week is they took what used to be originally a Christian Church , even Hagia Sofiya the word is a Christian term. Think of it in our shoes. Imagine what Isreal did to your mosques in Jerusalem. If Islam truly teach peace and Love , it must be lived and shown. This churc can be a mosque , it does not matter anyways. God rests in the Pure human heart. Beautiful buildings are extra. Even Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Our God said warned us from fake outerly religiousity. He compared fake Christianity to a grave that looks good from outside but smells from inside. Turkey is highly becoming ateist Look at their entertainment industry, life style. Their generation is diving into materialism. Most Muslims now a days worry more for their hijab and out religiousity than their inner heart. Their is no Personal relationship with God in Islam. It is based on Law and regulation with prewriitwn prayer. Fix that first or look into Christianity ( not the western) the eastern Orthodox Christianity. May be you will learn that we ate not what you assume as to be. Love and peace to you.

      @@bezagebremedhine5102 i agree with one of the facts mentioned by you that Orthodox Christians are more practicing and i saw that practically in Ethiopia. About the argument of whether it should be a mosque or church. I think there are some things that the ottomans did for hagia sofia rebuilding it and maintaining are the most crutial things. I dont think the purpose of converting the hagia sofia to a mosque in the first place was a move made to look down on orthodox christians or humiliate them, but it may have done so. i would say being a Muslim there is a part of me that would like to become a mosque and there a part of me that would like not to start conflict. Both those sides have reasoning in my religion. the first time the eastern delegation came to greet the prophet Muhammad. This was to check his claims on prophet hood. After hours of debate, it was the time for prayer of the christian delegation. I believe they were orthodox. The prophet asked them where are you heading, they said we are going to find a place to pray, the prophet said come and pray here(in the mosque). So the delegation prayed in the mosque. And that mosque is the second most holiest site of Islam. This statement rings that the purpose of Islam is not to create conflict within people with different religions. Even Omar refused to pray in holy sepulcher because he was afraid Muslims might convert it into a mosque after his time out of love of Islam not to look down on Christianity. It has been many times in history that people out of love for their religion have committed acts that God would not approve of. But the realization only comes once you have done it, and it may not be so easy to change the decision back. So i cant say whether hagia sofia is a mosque or church. A roman church or Orthodox church. All i can say is what i like to follow and that is my heart. If you think struggling for Hagia Sophia as a Church is right, or if you think making it a mosque is right. What ever you think Allah/God will give your heart peace once you have taken the right decision. No decision ever taken by a human is perfect nor can it be. It will always be full of flaws. But that is what a human is, a sculpture of flaws. if you expect anyone to make a decision that will be correct for this time and the time that comes after then i think you might be wrong in your thinking. So i think one should do what he/she thinks should be done and leave the result to God/Allah because if you are christian or a Muslim, the belief that God is in complete control of the situation should dominate your thinking. And one more thing that i have seen in muslims and christians is that hard times are seen as God's punishments for you. But they can be gift or curse depending on your response. if you bear those patiently then you will have good in this life and the next. So what ever the decision it will be hard on one party. I hope that party bears this and remembers God and does not think of this as a punishment, rather a gift of a process to purify your heart.

The Iranians besieged the city and occupied it for 2 years, but then the eastern Roman empire took it back, it was attacked by the Crusades many times before and after Pers. The Crusades were Catholic, East Roman was Ortodoks, they were enemies at that time. Constantinople was a small city with a population of only 30,000, had been devastated by The Crusades wars when the Turks arrived, the Ottoman king FATIH SULTAN SULEYMAN built the ruined parts of the city, left many Ottoman historical monuments, the straits and many works were built in the Republic of Turkey. And today it has reached a population of 20 million in a huge geography. Istanbul is an Ottoman city that includes Constantinople but is much more than that. Islam means submission to the will of god. It's certainly not peaceful in this universe

    • @yahyamallouh8987
      @yahyamallouh8987 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ducktility well Islam isn't pacifist indeed but that comes to the fact that fighting and forcing and stopping can be necessary sometimes, unless you live in an haven you will have to fight in your life either physically or psychologically because if you spare a murderer you let him murder more because if you don't fight evil it will spread and naturally if you believe in being rightous then why treat other views which you believe to be wrong as if they were equals? It's simple logic and I can't get why anyone have a problem a simple obvious logic

      The moohammadans are the slaves of Jesus.

    What a beautiful "Sophia church", so everyone admired it and wanted to have it. The work of who is the beautiful building? They build with heart that is sincerity to glorify the most High God. God of Abraham. Iskak and Jacob. God of Israel. The Living God. The work of the son of Man in the early centuries around 3.4 and 5 centuries. It is now an admiration for all of the children of mankind with various beliefs including Jews, Nasarani and Islam. Then what does it mean if some of the children of men (Islamic Turks and others) want to claim their own and their house of worship. I think it is amazing and shows beautifully the "Church of Sophia " which was built 15 centuries ago. Is the human child today still able to make the building as it???. The Nasarani from the beginning never made a building as good as an idol, because it was worldly goods. What about the Christian Church? For the people of Nasarani, the church is the children of men (two, three and more) who are allied in the faith of the divine promise of salvation to all nations (the children of men). As long as there are two or more children of Christian Christians who become the light in the midst of darkness of the world and salt to the world is enough to be able to animate the divine command that is to love your Father in heaven and love your neighbour, then the Christian Church of the most beautiful EXIST. Amin.

      Too be honest the delineation of space with an ambulatory and an east-west orientation and the overall shape of the plan make the Hagia Sofia more obviously a church, these things are not needed for prayer in Islam which is why when you look at the Sulimanye Mosque it does not include these elements and overall feels a lot more open. The Sulimanye mosque is a take on the Eastern Roman architectural style but it discards the christian ritual elements of the architecture found in the Hagia Sofia and includes its own ritual elements instead, like a courtyard out front and a qibla wall facing Mecca which dictates the orientation of the whole building.
