His successors would go on to kill over 100 million people in the next 100 years. That's how he and his kind influenced people. Arabs never did anything close to that brutal and were at the time the most tolerant by far out of all of the people in the world. It's not even close.

You gotta give the Arabs some credit in terms of influence. From Morocco to Pakistan, the Arabic script is used. North Africa now speaks Arabic - similar to how Central and South America speaks Spanish and uses the Latin script (although the Latin script originates from Romans, which originates from the Etruscans, which originates from Greeks, which originates from Phoenicians, which originates from Proto-Sinaitic, which originates from Egyptian hieroglyphs ; Arabic also ultimately derives from Egyptian hieroglyphs - so when it comes to script we are all just stealing from the Egyptians).
But also the Turks/Ottomans took over most of what was Arabic (expanding during 1300-1683).
But the Spaniards are not without loss since you lost quite a bit of territory to the USA (Texas, California, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Florida, Phillipines, Cuba)

The old Spanish identity crisis and cultural insecurity will never go away until the education system does a better job than it does today. Unfortunately too many Spanish people still regard the subject of their own history in terms of "Moros y Christianos" to be enacted out in annual festivals. They are ignorant as to the extent of the cultural, scientific and philosophical significance of the influence of Islam not just in Iberia but throughout "Christendom". The paranoid notion that "they" want to take over is nothing more than guilt and projection of Spain's own history of conquest and destruction of whole populations and cultures across Central and South America. I mean come on you silly old ladies, give me a break!

The Arabs when they were in Spain (and other regions) made it possible for people of different groups, religions, ethnicity and identity to live side by side with one another and floriush. You have to keep in mind that before the Arabs came, there were different scattered vandal tribes clashing with each other after they had kicked the Romans from the iberian peninsula. The Arabs made Spain for centuries a beacon of Europe with all it had to offer. Its strange that Spanish people don't embrace that part of the countries history. The roman empire influenced my ancestors in the past and I never denied it, I actually have a lot of respect for the roman empire.
Unfortunately, as much as Europe tries to brand itself as secular and that it got rid of racism, it doesn't seem to be the case at all.

Genetically, 95% of the Moors that inhabited Spain were ancestors of modern day Moroccans. Very few of them were Algerian (those few are mainly in Tlemcen or Oran which were historically attached to Morocco) or Arabs from the middle east. This historical inaccuracy is annoying because most people view the moorish presence as an arab presence or a north african presence as a whole (or even a subsaharan presence). No no no, it was a Moroccan presence, period (just look at the architecture inside the Alhambra and you'll see how it's similar to the architecture in Fès Morocco). This Algerian guy should stop doing cultural appropriation and the woman should stop calling moroccan moors "arabs", the only thing they had in common was the arabic language mainly. That's like saying it was the latins that built the Eiffel tower, but which latins are we talking about? The French, the Spanish, The Portuguese or the Italians? In that case it was the French people. Please guys, read about these things and you'll realize each time you go the Andalusia, that all the moorish monuments were moroccan 100%. History is history!

According to the European writers of schoolbooks all the knowledge suddenly popped up in the European brains from the 16th century onwards. While knowledge is an evolution, Europeans bribe it as a revolution. Arabic scientists should be credited widely for their important contributions. After the Moors were expelled from Spain, the Vatican confiscated all 70 libraries from Cordoba and Sevilla. Then the books were translated into Latin. That clarifies why scientists like Copernicus could contribute from the 16th century on.

victor Couldn’t that be said about all of South America and the imperial force of the Spanish Empire? They still practice Catholicism and speak Spanish down there after oppressing the native Americans there?

It's not just a mosque, it's the seat of power for the Ummayads after the collapse of the Ummayads after they lost to the Abbasids. It's really holy but so was the church of St Sophia. Karma works for all.
