Hi Guys, I am new to QNAP NAS. I watched this video and followed it. I learned a lesson. Hope it helps you as well. My 2bay device has Qtier enabled. So, I have 2 M2 storage. This video is well made for 6 years ago. Not for now, especially if you have Qtier. I you have Qtier remember to turn it off before you move your disks or move the M2. with the disks all together. Otherwise, I experienced falling migration and false status disks. Hope this messages helps you and wish the QNAPTV will update this content.
Question: I have the 973ax and currently have system on 2 RAID1 256GB SSDs in slots 1 & 2 with two more 256GB SSDs in slots 3 & 4 designated for acceleration. Can I UPGRADE the SSDs in 1 & 2 to 8TB U.2 drives by "replace drive one at a time" without issue? Do I need to turn off acceleration first? Will there be a problem having one drive SATA and one drive U.2 for a few moments? I will be replacing both 1 & 2 with 8TB U.2 drives. OR Do I just need to start over and reinitialize and create a new system on 1 & 2 with 3 & 4 SSD acceleration? Will my DATA on my five 16TB HDDs be okay and will the new system recognize the RAID5 array automatically? Any additional recommendations?
I have a QNAP TS-453BT3-8G. I've set up all my data on a single 12Tb Ironwolf and now need to add another 12Tb to continue. As I have gone to the expense of setting up another QNAP NAS for offsite redundancy, I want my 453BT3 to utilise all 24Tb storage space without internal redundancy as well as benefit from the greater speeds of RAID 0. However, there are NO instructions anywhere and certainly not using the latest firmware that uses a different interface and labelling as the older firmware used in your example. I've physically installed the 2nd 12Tb Ironwolf, but am stuck as to how to set it up the pair in RAID 0. Pretty frustrating after spending over $3,000 to establish a secure environment with powerful NAS on a new 10Gb LAN. Can you help advise?
Can I use different size of haddrives? For example, I already have had 2 of 3TB HDD connected as RAID1 and I would like to add 1 of 10TB HDD to work in RAID5. Please help, thank you.
I had a 5-disk raid and inserted another disk. After doing what is shown in the video I had a 6-disk raid, but the volume capacity was the same, and the new space was unallocated. I had to expand the volume to actually get the space working.
Hi Qnap, I have a question. I have a ts453bt3 with 4 10tb drives configured as 1 large pool with multiple thick volumes in raid 5. I want know if it’s possible to connect to another enclosure through Ethernet that would be rack mounted in a closet away from my work area that would be configured as a 2nd raid group/storage pool for saving finished projects that don’t need to be accessed often. I would use the 453tb3 for storing frequently used data and for projects that are in progress. Then to free up space in that unit I would transfer files to the 2nd unit/storage pool for long term storage/archival. Almost like I was using the 453tb3 to manually cache data I’m currently working on. Just want to know if this idea would work and if it is a viable thought process? Thank you.
I'm kind of new to this, what happens if you put 4 brand new drives in a 4-bay (TS-453A) and you use RAID 1. What becomes of Drives 3 & 4? Is it possible to have two volumes? For example Volume One D1-D2 using RAID 1 and Volume Two D3-D4 using RAID 1 no striping like when using RAID 10.
if you want the data from the old one, back them up on anhoter disks then you can move the disk over to the new nas, the disk will be formated / erased
It should still work, but you won't be able to use the extra capacity of the new disk. Later, you can do a disk replacement of your original disks and replace them with the larger model. Once all disks are at the same larger size, I believe you can expand to use the additional capacity. I am not 100% on the exact process, but it should be possible to find instructions online.

Hi QNAP, so that it is easier to follow and read please maximize the window while demonstrating the steps.
is the data on the existing drive array retained or is the whole set reformatted?
very helpful and this worked perfectly for me thank you
Did you lost your data after the migration

When I added my 3rd disk...how come it only shows i have 7.84? I have 3 4 TB HDD. How can I get the most out of my storage? As in all 12 TB?

I have moved my data over from my old Netgear NAS. Can I now just add the drives from there to my QNAP volume or do I need to format them first?
if you want the data from the old one, back them up on anhoter disks then you can move the disk over to the new nas, the disk will be formated / erased
In this process will I loose all the data on the existing RAID?
No. This feature is meant for you to be able to expand your existing storage, without loosing data.
@@QNAPTV thanks for the info!
For New Version Steps are bit Different. instead of "Expand Pool" you need click "Manage" then Click "Add New Disk".
what to do if the new disk has a different (larger) capacity and my first two disks are in a RAID 5?

Can I use RAID 1 with 3 DISKS? ( only mirroring)
Hi, Yusuf,
No, QNAP NAS only support 2 disks mirror.
Hi Will this delete the information from the first 2 disks?
Hi there!
I have the same doubt...have you found an answer to this??
No, the data will stay, and won't be deleted. However, we highly recommend to backup the data before migration.
half the video is about what a raid is? why? i just want to know how?
can new disk be added on raid 5 without any risk of dataloss
