  • What is RAID and why do I need it on my NAS Drive? nascompares.com/2019/10/23/wh...
    Large RAID storage for archive data storage solutions RAID is not a new thing. Originally created as means of combining multiple smaller hard drives and combining them into 1 large storage volume (so your PC would only see one hard drive like your C:/ drive, instead of several smaller hard drives connected). RAID stands for either Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks, or Redundant Array of Independent Disks. Now the reason for the two different versions of the letters in RAID is largely due to how storage has changed. As Hard drives have grown progressively larger in capacity, the need for creating massive volumes has been outweighed by the more current trend of data storage arrays needing Redundancy.
    Redundancy? Striping? Checksums? Mirror? What does it all mean?
    Large Scale RAID Storage Solution It should be mentioned that RAID is not something exclusive to NAS. In fact, it has long stood as the means for all Storage arrays to maintain Hard-Drive safety in most Direct Attached Storage (DAS) and the more high profile Storage Area Networks (SAN) devices. However it’s importance in NAS is because of the length of time most Network Attached Storage devices will be powered on for… often 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - for the most part un-monitored. Having a sufficient safety net in place to preserve your data in the event of one of your hard drives breaking down or failing is paramount. In almost all RAID scenarios, you will have an element of redundancy whereby you will lose a portion of the total space available which will be used to maintain a duplicate or copy of your total data. If a drive fails, you can then recover all your data from the redundancy/redundant portion of storage.

    This is so helpful. Already at 2:14 I failed to find "migrate" for over an hour, simply because I did not know that you can just double click. I kept looking for a specific button that says "migrate"...

    @DavidM2002 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One more thing to speed things up. Once the migration has started, click on the "Manage" button again. At the bottom, click on "Resync Priority". The default is Medium. You can change this to "Resync First (High Priority)" to speed things along a bit faster. My TS-453A had 2 x 10 Tb drives in RAID 1 and were 85% full. It took about 36 - 38 hours to complete the conversion when I added a new 10 Tb drive.

    You can set priority of synchronization in storage settings to highest and synchronization will be around 80 - 100 MB/s.

    This is exactly the procedure i want to follow when upgrading my NAS starting with 2x disks and adding more and more later on. Based on my understanding the Raid1 to Raid5 migration is only possible with QTS and not with QuTS hero ... is this correct?

    Thank you for yet another great QNAP tutorial - I have Raid 1 on my 2-bay TS-253A NAS & after being infected by Deadbolt I have formatted all lost my data & now want to revert to Raid 0 & just use my NAS as my media center using Plex, but Migrate button is greyed out, can you please advise how to achieve Raid 0 from Raid 1? (I'm not keeping critical data on there so its not going to be an issue)

    What happens if you have a power cut midway through the migration?

    Hi all, I have a 251 and am upgrading to a 453D. Can I just take out 1 of the 2 drives (because they are mirrored) and pop in 3 new drives in the 453D to build the new Raid5 group, and that way I still have a backup in the second original raid 1 drive. Worried if I put both into the new 453D, and just add 2 blanks I’ll have no backups if it fails.

    Question: On the RAID 1 do I need to have the space available for the restore data that will be put on each drive in a RAID 5 or can the drives of the RAID 1 be full, for example 95%?

    Is it possible to create a static volume (skipping storage pool) in RAID 1 and then expanding it to RAID 5 without losing data? I currently have 4 x 10TB WD Red drives and a Qnap TS-453. Due to the lack of many additional drives, my thought was to create a RAID1 array and then static volume on top of it. Transfer 8TB of data from another 10TB (sits in an external enclosure) to the newly created RAID1 array, insert the same 10TB drive that was i the external enclosure and expand the RAID1 to RAID 5 followed by expanding the static volume without losing the data? My thought afterwards is to repeat the same procedure with an additional 10TB drive but to expand the created RAID5 array from 3 x 10TB drives to total 4 x 10TB drives? Thing is I have 2 x 10TB drives that are completely empty whereas the other two 10TB drives are situated in external enclosures (WD My Book Duo 20TB) as JBOD. and need to balance of of this in such a way without losing data. Thankful for any suggestion!

      @DavidM2002 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did basically what you are asking. I had a static volume, RAID 1 and added a 3rd drive of the same make, model and size. No data on my new, 3rd drive so nothing to lose. No problem. It did take close to 38 hours though.

    hi! i just set up my qnap nas with 4 WD Red Pro 10TB drives. i set it up in Raid 1 when i thought i was wrong about Raid 5 (understanding it. im an electrician up to 600v. i dont know computer stuff)
    i found your video and when it gets to the 'click on manage and select migrate' i dont have the option to migrate. (at 4:07)
    there is NOTHING on any of my drives. it took about 18 hours to synchronize (or initialize) the 4 drives initially but also i dont see 2 of the drives except in the window "overview"...
    what am i missing?

    I would like to migrate from Raid 5 to Raid 6, unfortunately I can't find this option in QuTS. I would be very thankful for help.
    The system already has an additional data storage medium.

    Hello. And thank you for your videos. I am wondering about Raid 5 vs 6 vs 10. I have three homecomputers with full icloud backup, but want to also have a system at home (NAS). I am wondering about buying a 4-bay NAS and am wondering of what you recommend of the three different raid systems mentioned earlier. My preference is safety, but want to have a direct connection to my backed up data, not only on the net (cloud which demands a harddrive order of backup and postal delivery). Thank you for your recommendation

      Four bay is too small for raid 10. And, RAID 6 wouldnt leave much storage in a 4 bay.

    • @doorey2
      @doorey2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Raid 10 simply isn't efficent. Only do raid 10 if you specifically know you need raid 10.

    Hii.. just find this useful guide... Just want to ask.. if I have 4 slot QNAP NAS..I fill 3 slot in the QNAP with 10TB and built it to RAID 5. The question is: can I add 1 additional drive 10TB later if the RAID 5 with 3 drives storage already full? So it can be 4 drives RAID 5 without losing old data? And once more.. can I add the 4th drives with bigger 10TB drive to become bigger RAID 5? TIA.

    Hi, i have installed a Single WD Red Plus 12TB in my nas at the moment but the Nas recognized only between 10 and 11 TB! Not the full 12 Tb. Is this normal?

    • @doorey2
      @doorey2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. This is actualy due to how computers work and binary and yatta yatta. It is normal and it is actually all 12TB, it just doesn't show that way again bc of some computer nuances. This will always happen with every drive. Don't worry

    If I'm adding 2 new HDDs, can I select BOTH drives under migrating from Raid 1 to Raid 5? Or can I only migrate one drive at a time?

    • @doorey2

      Im not sure BUT qnaps documentation says yto go from No Raid to Raid 1 and THEN to Raid 5. Hope that helps.

    I added a 3rd drive to my Raid 1 and the system automatically started to migrate to a Raid 5. Not sure if that is better, because if I wanted a different Raid type, that would have been wasted 70 hrs for the migration. The video helped though.

    After physically adding my drive to the NAS, will QNAP automatically select RAID 1 to RAID 5 for me or I have to manually select the RAID 5 option?

    • @doorey2
      @doorey2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With 3 drives, raid 5 is really your only option. Raid 1, 0, 10 don't work on 3 drives. However, if you had say 4 or 6, it would give you option to select which you would like.

    • @DavidM2002
      @DavidM2002 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leo, at 4:30, if you look just below the bottom of the box that shows the drives, it shows " RAID 1 -> RAID 5 ". I suppose then that it's simply the default action. You can see it more clearly on QNAP's web site where they give the procedures and pic's : www.qnap.com/en/how-to/tutorial/article/online-raid-level-migration
      Hope that helps.

    This does not work on QuTS hero. How do I do this on QuTS hero. I have 2 disks in RAID 1 and added another disk (same size), but the option to expand is not shown. How does this work on QuTS hero. I can't find any info on QNAP for QuTS hero.

    This is a bit of a big comment, but please do read as it may be a very worthwhile two minutes of your life.
    You may think I'm just saying this for dramatic effect, but I swear this is the absolute gospel truth.
    I was just about to upgrade QNAP TS-431 with 2 x 8Tb IronWolf drives to 3 x 8Tb IronWolf drives. I watched Steve's video and thought to myself that as I had most of the data on my NAS backed up to USB drives I would just risk it. After all I'd not had any problems with any of my disks for a very long time. So I was just about to press the "Apply" button to add the extra drive and migrate from RAID1 to RAID5 when my wife popped her hear around the door and asked when I was going to pick up the food we had ordered earlier from the takeaway. I took a quick look at my watch and as always when I'm working on something tech I realised that time had passed much more quickly than I had thought, and indeed it was time to pop out in the car and pick up the food. So I pushed the keyboard and mouse away and left to pick up the take-away.
    When I got back a half hour later, I popped my head into the computer/study and noticed that the iMac had rebooted. I continued into the kitchen and looked at the digital display on the oven/stove which was flashing 00:00 so asked my wife if there had been a power outage while I'd been out to pick up the food. "Yes", she said. "Only a little blip, I had to switch the TV back on but everything else seems to have been ok babe".
    This was the first power outage since we moved into our current home some fifteen years ago. Never had any problems with mains power supply since the day we moved in.
    If I had pressed the "apply" button before I had left, or my wife hadn't reminded me at that very point in time that I should go and pick up the food, then chances are my NAS and all my photos since my last back up would have been trashed, lost for ever! Subsequently I checked what I could have potentially lost, totting up the number of photos from my photoshoots. It was 10,461 images! As some of those were photos of a close family member who had died recently, they were very important to me from an emotional (and mental health) point of view. The rest were significant pieces of work that from a business point of view, due to the Covid restrictions and world chaos in which we all find ourselves as bit part players, were pretty much impossible to recreate.
    How spooky, that for some reason I didn't press the "apply" button and let the migration continue while I went to pick up the food. How spooky that after a pretty intensive two and a half days "discovery" I now have a good set of backups so I can migrate with minimal risk, and how spooky that the day I was going to press the "Apply" button would have been the 25th birthday of the close family member who died a 9 months earlier. I think he was watching over me.

    I have a new drive and it failed to make a new storage pool. Am i crazy to try and migrate it in to a raid 5 with my other 2 discs from a raid 1? what happens if it failes as it starts or after 10 minutes. Seagate iron wolf pro 4tb

      I would certainly recommend moving from RAID 1 to RAID 5 if you have the additional drive(s), but yeah...I would ALWAYS backup your data first REGARDLESS. Not because of any intrinsic failure in your specific NAS model, but because there are just TOO MANY things that can go wrong. The NAS Hard Drive fails mid build, the Power cuts to your building, the PSU blows, the NAS controller board/battery fails, You trip on a cable, you spill your coffee on it, a dog wazzes on it!!!

    • @NickyDoyle

      @@nascompares thanks Andrew much appreciated, the new hard drive seems to disconnect regularly and I cant add it to a new storage pool without it alarming out. Thin i should not start the switch over until i get a different hard drive
