Hi Mike, good, sensible and on the mark vid. Thank you. My question is, 4 bay Qnap, putting in 3x8Tb as R5 config. Initilise NAS and have bare minimum apps/services running as only using it as server for Apple TV and Infuse. Infuse will use SMB for comms but can I remove unneeded apps from initial power up apps? What are they or what do I leave? Thanks in advance.
I would suggest two things, first, just uninstall anything you are not using. SMB does not require any apps to run. Secondly, check out this video on disabling all the things you do not need. This is from a security perspective but it affects performance as well. Hope that helps.

Hi Mike, whats the benefit of having one volume only for system? i have two 4TB ironwolf hdd in my TS-230 as raid 1. i have only one volume (thick) with the full 4tb of space and have 3 tb free. the problem is, that the hdd is very loud an constantly working. would it help to set one volume only for system and the rest of the data on an extra volume?
Not really, Noise most likely comes from you HDD themselves and possibly your fan profile. Having a smaller system partition is mainly a personal preference in how you like to organize your storage but will not affect noise. Great question.
Hello perfectly explained btw Mike i just i wanna ask currently i have QNAP TS-453D and has a 3x 4TB installed Running RAID 5 and i wanna add an additional 6TB on the 4th bay is it ok ? wouldn't be any problem in the future? or shall i just use a 4TB instead ?
You can use a 6t but it will only be seen as a 4t. They have to be the same capacity but it works fine.
I have a 2 bay QNAP NAS being used as a home media server. I want to add a second drive ( same size, make, etc ) and set them as a Raid 1. Presumably, I have to add it to the existing static volume and then create the Raid. Will QNAP walk me through that ?
A video on volumes, storage pools, etc would be really helpful. What they are, are they separate things or subsets of one or another, and in what general circumstances would you use one or another.
I will add it to my list of future videos. When you add a drive, you can log in to the storage manager and choose between creating a RAID 1, JBOD, or stand-alone drive. Thanks for the comment and suggestion.
I have the ts-673 and 4 6tb drives ordered that will be a raid 10. my question is can the remaining two bays be used in a raid 1 for backup of the first raid 10
Yes, as long as they are not part of your raid 10 pool, you can can create a second raid 1 storage pool.
Hi Mike, can I install OS/system/qts on ssd so that I can boot more faster when I turn on/off the qnap?

You can take a doubt, I'm new to Nas, there were already two 5GB hard drives each allocated to the NAS, but I put 3 more hard drives of 10TB each, at the end of the expansion, he informs that he will erase the data of the selected disks, that Do you mean that the newly corrected discs will be deleted?

There are a couple of things to think about. First, if you expand your current array of two 5T drives, and put 3 10T drives in, the Array will only see the 10T as a 5T drive. That is because a RAID 5 configuration has to have 5 equal 5T drives (the smallest drives in your case). So you have two options, do a drive replacement and replace the 5T with the 10T (one by one, see my other video on drive replacement) and when you are done, add the last 10T to expand. the array This will give you a total of 20T of useable space with two drive slots leftover and don't use the 5T drives. When you need more space, you will still have two slots to add 2 more 10T drives. Option two is to leave the current configuration and set the 3 10T drives as a separate RAID Group. This will format the 3 drives as a RAID 5 and give you a storage pool of 20T (3 x 10T - 1 drive for parity) + the 5T on the other pool but they will be separate RAID pools. 2 x 5T in RAID 1 as RAID group 1 and 3 x 10T as RAID group 2. Because each of the RAID groups will have a redundancy drive you will be giving up 2 drives, one for each array. Though it is more expensive, the best long term is to use option 1 which will give you 20T but leave you with two empty slots, vs, Option two which will give you 25T with no slots left over. Ready to by a QNAP TS-664 with 6 bays to preserve the future. For the moment I plan to install only 4 disks and later on 1 or 2 more. So I really appreciate your video because I was afraid that installing new disk was something quite complicated, but it seems quite simple (I came from Synology and will discover QTS) . Just a question : as the process seems very long, what happen if the NAS shut down during the process ? I am facing sometimes electricity breakdown. Is all the files corripted or not ?
First, always, always run any NAS with even a small UPS. This is a must to prevent file corruption. You only need to run the NAS for 15-20 minutes so it can safely be shut down. It can be configured in the QTS software to safely shut down, saving many hours of grief and lost data. As for expansion, make sure you set it as one raid group when you set it up so that it can easily be expanded. Also, remember that QNAP uses actual RAID, so your drives will have to be the same size to start with and to expand later. Good luck, and thanks for the question. Hope that helps.

Yes, absolutely you can.
Do you got any knowledge with regards to what could happen to RAID data if the cache drive dies along the way? Does cache SSD hold only temp data for copying and reading processes or does it hold some information from RAID data and losing it would also mean losing some data from RAID? Any experience on that?
Assuming you have configured it as cache and not Qtier, the data is moved to the hard drives but not right away. It is possible to lose a small amount of data if you are using only one cache drive if you lose you cache drive and the data has not been fully copied. Rare but possible. As SSD's do not give a warning, I would suggest a pair of SSD's in a raid cache going forward if you can.

I assume the new drive was the same size? The drive should have rebuilt the bad drive on its own. Since you are now vulnerable, I would reach out to their tech support so that your actions do not lead to data loss. They are pretty quick at responding and what you do next can be important. That message implies the system no longer recognizes the array.

Is it best to shut down the NAS before adding the physical hard drive into the bay? Or is it ok to add it in while things are up and running?
These are hot swap devices and it is perfectly OK to add or swap a drive while they are on. It certainly will not hurt if you feel better with a shut down but it is not required. Hope that helps. I use to shut my units (carryover from PCs) but for many years I do not shut down anymore. Thanks for the question.
Hi Mike, any chance you do remote consulting? I have a TVS-872XT that had 4 x 4tb Seagate IronWolfs, and just added another 4tb IronWolf, same model as the others. I followed your instructions which worked to get the drive added to the RAID 5, but for some reason I can't get the volume to expand and show the new free space. It show's the 5th drive as part of the RAID but didn't add any free space.
Unfortunately for the next few months time does not allow me to much of anything else as my work day starts at 4am and ends around 8pm right now. Lets first see if we can it fixed and then go from there. IF you go to my about page of my channel, there is an email listed so maybe you can send me some screen shots of your storage configuration and I will try to help point you in the right direction. Assuming you are using QTS, and you have thick provisioning, you will have to expand each volumes as the expansion is for the RAID Pool only.

Mike, I had 3 x 10 Tb drives in Raid 5 on my TS-453A which was about 75% full. I just added another drive following your instructions. My QNAP advised that it was going to take the better part of 48 hours to complete the task. Now, half way through the process, I'm starting to wonder if I had deleted most, or even all of the data, would that have quickened the process. Since my QNAP is now just a backup to my Synology NAS, I could easily have deleted the data and then copied it back afterwards. Would that have helped much ?
When you add a drive or replace a drive it has to rebuild the array but you ca still use the device without a concern. It is the best way to go. Good luck and let me know.
@@MikeFaucher It finished at about the 40 hour mark. When it was done, there was a message that the file system on one of the disks that was not clean and offered to run the cleaner which then took a few minutes. I did find out via the QNAP forum that deleting the data ahead of time would not speed up the process because of the model / operating system that I was had. Apparently if I was running ZFS, deleting the data would make a difference. But... there is no increase in the size of my Raid 5. I did get a message that says "Failed to expand volume. Unable to resize file system." Not sure what to do next.
@@DavidM2002 Do you show a single raid group of 4 x 10T? If so, do you have different volumes created on it? There are two things to look at, first is to make sure your raid group has picked up the extra 10 T drive, and second is to look at the volumes on the group. Just adding the drives will expand the RAID group but not the volumes. You will have to resize those. Play the video from around the 5 min mark and make sure that everything lines up.
@@MikeFaucher I think I found the error of my ways. The short version is that when I first setup my QNAP, I set it up as a static volume and that stops any expansion. Since it was being used only as a backup device, I just re-initialized it and started from scratch. Now using a Thick volume. Thanks for all of your replies and help.

good evening Mike, i am running Quts Hero 5.0.1 on tvs-1288x raid 6 with 4 hard drives and i want to add another 4 hard drives to the same group, but when i try to expand pool i do not have a option to add new disk to a existing raid group, only create and add new raid group, how can i get it to add to the same raid group as you show on the video?
Unfortunately Hero is ZFS based and you can not expand the group. You can create a new group and add that group to the pool.

If you add a 12T in addtion to the 5 x6 it will appear as a standalone drive. If you replace/upgrade one of the 6T with a 12T, you can not use the space until all the drives are replaces (th-cam.com/video/HUSaAQiTXng/w-d-xo.html). Not sure how you have the 5 drives configured so I need to understand how you have it setup.

@@plaxen1 You can add 6 more drives and expand your RAID 5 as long as your device has the capacity. Theoretically, there is no maximum however I would consider that 14 drives in one raid 5 starts to get dangerous and you may want to go with raid 6 so that you have two redundant drives. That decision is based on what you are using the array for. I have run 12 drives in a raid 5 before with no issues but if you lose more than 1 drive you will lose the entire array and your data. If you do it, but a spare and have it ready so you can recover quickly.
With RAID 10 you have to add two drives at a time as it is a redundant raid 0 but only get the storage capacity of 1 extra drive for every two. You can expand it as much as you want but as another option, you can create a different storage pool such as a raid 5 for backup, and get more capacity at the cost of a bit of performance. One RAID 10 array for speed and protection and a RAID 5 for archive/backup. Just an alternate idea.
I wonder if the opposite can be done too... let's say you have 4 drives and you want to remove one to keep the RAID5 to 3 Drives because no need of space... so that the extra drive once freed could be kept as spare in case of one of the remaining 3 failed. Anyone knows if that's possible?

Storage and Snapshots should be on the main page as an icon if it is not, go to the upper left hand menu and you should see it there. Hope that helps.
yea so i had created a new login without administrator rights and logged in with that, then i only saw two apps in the main menu. once i logged in as admin again i saw all the options in the mail menu. thanks for the video, very helpful!

Different brands are probably OK, but they have to be the same size.

I added them over time and went for special offers, that's why they're all different.
But at least I tested them with badblocks and smart tests to make sure that they're all fine. Three of them are already running fine in a RAID5 and the fourth one will be added in the next few days, that's why stumbled across your great video! So thank you very much!
