    Correction, thanks to Vladimir Shvarts: I misspoke when I said the SL2/200d has 720p @ 120fps. That feature is only available on the M50.
    What's up everyone?! I hope this comparison of the Canon M50 and SL2 + sample footage and images is helpful. Did you like it? I love these cameras and think they are outstanding entry level options for both photography and video. Let me know what you think!!
    Was there too much detail? Not enough? What did you like, and also, what did you not like? What would you like to see more of? Would love to know what you think, good or bad. I am grateful in advance 🙏

      I’m shock! You read my mind. A few hours ago I watched a video comparing the two because I’m planning to order the m50 tomorrow and was like I wish he had a video comparing the two and look you uploaded the video. eh, it would have been more helpful if you actually vlogged with both and showed the differences. Don't get me wrong super helpful video with all the technical differences (i'm subscribed, not hating), but the thing you're missing is a real world example. Nobody is making videos of stationary objects.
    I've used both and these are the main differences:
    M50
    The M50 has that digital stabilization which is JUST OK, it's good enough to where you can walk and talk into the camera or walk and show what a landscape is like - (if you're a travel vlogger this important) and have the video be somewhat stable. The SL2 however is mess. It's super shaky, you really can't walk and talk with that camera.
    Also the M50, while more stable it crops in a lot with stabilization on. So it's harder to get a wide angle look and have it be smooth and stable.
    SL2
    The SL2 has higher quality video. It's looks like an 80D. The M50 looks like an Iphone. Both are good, just the SL2 is better. It also native access to all those amazing lenses like the 50mm and the 10-8mm. Making the Sl2 so affordable for the quality you get.
    Conclusion
    The M50 is smaller and the lenses are smaller which is great - It's the superior on the go travel camera. But the speed booster everyone talks about is expensive. People don't realize this. They think it's like a cheap adapter you can get at Walmart :) It's not. Also, it makes the M50 bigger, the point of the M50 is to be small.
    If you're doing sit down, talk into the camera videos, get the Sl2. If you want higher quality video, get the Sl2. If you want the most bang for your buck, get the Sl2. If you want something small, capable and somewhat stable - particularly if you're doing a lot of on the go, outdoor recording get the M50.
    I'm assuming anyone reading this, that you're a beginner. I ended up buying the SL2.

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks David, I super appreciate you taking the time to leave such thoughtful feedback.
      I agree with your points. If someone is willing to give up a few things (headphone jack, weather sealing, etc) the sl2 is a great 80d alternative. I did another video showing the image quality comparison. The reason for shooting static objects in that video is to keep the subject and lighting identical.
      Glad to have you as a contributing member of this community 🙏🏻

    That 70-200 looked gigantic on the sl2 lol. Great video! I plan on getting the sl3 since it incorporates the digic 8 and 4k video, closing the gap even more. I was already leaning toward the sl2 because I don’t have to pay 150 bucks for an adapter for my current lenses. With these changes it’s a clear choice for me. Thanks for the review. All the extra stuff in the M50 sounded good.....until I heard the battery only gives 1/3 of what the SL2 gives and in my mind the score dropped quickly vs the SL2. But honestly, the shape and feel of the SL2 is much better. The M50 looks like a bridge camera at best.

    I have both. I just bought the M50 a few days ago. I started really seeing the limitations of the SL2, especially the audio focus. I saw the sale on the M50 and I jumped on it. Just waiting on my Viltrox speed booster so I can use my other lenses and I ordered a Sigma 16mm. I can't wait for that.

    • @jayfotia
      @jayfotia 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tech Gear Talk mainly the price difference, battery life and having the purchase the lens adapter for the M50. I do love the size of the M50 as I’ll be doing alot of travelling with my camera. I don’t think i’ll be doing much recording or sports photography as I just want to learn the basics for now, other then that the M50’s features seem so much better then the SL2. Saying that they both seem like great beginner cameras, but I just can’t decide.
      Thankyou for responding!

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep in mind that with the adapter, you’re losing some of the portability of the m50 because essentially the adapter adds the distance needed for the mirror in the sl2.

    Hello. It's been many years since the 80D/77D came out, but I'm asking myself the same question. Now I have a Canon 600D, and I no longer lack its capabilities (of course 😅). I choose between 77D and M50. My main task is to shoot photos (I want to shoot commercials: portraits, custom family scenes, and some street photography). The video is most likely secondary (although I don’t know for sure). There is no money for a full frame yet. What do you recommend from these two devices? The bad ergonomics of the M50 and the lack of control buttons, as it is on the 77D, scares me. However, they tell me from everywhere: "2023, buy a mirrorless camera (they mean M50)"
    I want to point out that I am not going to invest in EF-M lenses. I have a fleet of EF/EF-s.
    What can you advise me? What can you advise me?

      Although I normally recommend the SL2 or the M50 (either would work great for you) because they are so easy to use, have great image quality and the autofocus is amazing. I would suggest you look at the Sony a6400. Sony is harder and more confusing to look, but if you need slow motion (120 frames per second), Canon doesn't offer that in a consumer camera yet.

      @TechGearTalk  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could always get an external monitor and mount it on top. But that gets clunky. I’m not sure why Sony isn’t doing anything about it. The new a6400 at least has a flip screen.

    • @hardlygospel374
      @hardlygospel374 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for your prompt response @@TechGearTalk. I just had a quick look at that a6400 and would you believe it only flips up! So you get a selfie mode, but it's 100% obstructed by an external microphone - which is 100% necessary for vlogging etc. It doesn't flip to the side. I'm really dumbfounded by that design decision. I might be forced to buy into another ecosystem just to vlog. Would you recommend the EOS200D or the M50? because that's the two I'm aiming for. I do love the color science with Cannon. There's about a $100 price difference between them both here in Australia. Much appreciated!

      You're very welcome. Depends on how small you want it to be. M50 with ef-m lenses is a super small setup. But if you're adding the adapter and using EF or EF-S lenses, you're adding to the size. I have both and they work great for me.

  • @farisdinulhaq8836
    @farisdinulhaq8836 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi! i want to ask about your opinion abt this.
    recently i'm a beginner photo/viceographer and do some small paid project with my EOS M. but i have a confidence problem with this camera due to its small and compact size that make me feel "not professional enough" to do the work.
    so right now i'm confused between this sl2 and m50 (my price range). actually i'm a bit leaning towards m50 due to its capability to record at 120fps eventho its only 720p, its okay for me cz upscale it to 1080 in post is still usable.
    and its possibilities to use a speed booster to have a "full frame" camera experience.
    but as you know, having a mirrorless again would definitely back to my previous problem with EOS M. soo maybe SL2 may be better. but M50 pros as i mentioned above are sooo tempting for me.
    could you give me your point of view on this?
    Many thanks!

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I totally understand about the appearance of the camera and how it doesn’t “look professional”. The truth is, it’s not designed as a professional tool.
      But what’s most important to the client is the results. No one cares what camera you use if you do good work.
      Just like no one cares if you use a RED camera, if the results are terrible.
      You’ve already done paid work, was it a problem?

    Outstanding comparison between the M50 and SL2. Does the M50 still maintain its smaller size benefit over the SL2 when using an adapter on the M50 for EF/EF-S lenses? I currently own the SL2 (which i like) but I am always looking for smaller solutions, especially when traveling with kids . I am curious to see the size difference between these two cameras with the same lens mounted on both. Also Does the M50 balance well with a speed lite flash mounted? Any input is appreciated, especially since there are no stores in my area have either on display to compare. Awsome video. Thanks.

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Greg. The M50 is still somewhat smaller than the SL2 with the adapter. But of course, it's less significant. The adapter is designed to move EF/EF-S lenses to the same distance away from the censor as they would be on the SL2.
      If I already had the SL2 and was not going to use EF-M lenses, I'm not sure I would switch to the M50. If you were going to go with EF-M lenses, then you've got a much smaller setup.
      I hope this helps.

    • @greggassert9728
      @greggassert9728 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your response. If I went with the M50, I would probably get the ef-m 11-22 and the ef-m 22 f2 lenses and adapt my other Ef-s lenses. When you factor the cost of the adapter and the better battery life of the SL2, the SL2 may be the better for me to stick with the SL2 for now. I estimate I would adapt lenses at least 50% of the time. Thanks again for your insight .

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're very welcome. I think it's a good way to look at it. The 22 f/2 is a great lens. But if you're adding the adapter and the ef-s lenses, and the reason for switching is the size, I would rather have you save your money and invest in better glass.

    I can’t decide! If only the M50 had better battery life. Will they ever upgrade the battery? Also, is the M50 battery so bad that it can’t work for video? Trying to get an idea of how long it will last.

      The battery on the M50 is not great, but you can either get another battery or get a continuous power source. Hasn't been an issue for me (but I have 2 batteries). Are you shooting on the go or in a location with power?

      Tech Gear Talk My wife would be on the go. How can u have continuous power? I heard there is no ac power input to keep the M50 plugged in.

    Good job! But what about focus points? I heard m50 has ~150, 200d only 9... isn’t it so? In my opinion it is the main difference...

      Thanks. That’s only if you’re using the the focus points in the viewfinder of the SL2. If you’re using live view, then you’re using the dual pixel autofocus and can choose a focus point on almost the entire sensor.

      Hi. I have not seen noticeable image quality difference between the two (see here: th-cam.com/video/XEhsU-aEX04/w-d-xo.html). Here is my cinematic tutorial for the SL2: th-cam.com/video/RDs-Zzb0pmE/w-d-xo.html

      Both would work great. The M50 is smaller and more portable if that helps.

      Hi. Nice thing about the M50 is that it will show you the exposure in the viewfinder because it's electronic. Hope this was helpful.

    Do you shoot your TH-cam videos at 4K? Is there a noticeable difference? What's the difference to the viewer?

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some are shot in 4K. For the most part, there is no significant difference for youtube. If I showed them to you side by side, you'd say that the 4K footage is sharper and has more details, but if I just showed you a good 1080P video, the average person isn't going to ever think about it. There are other advantages of shooting in 4k (even if you edit in 1080p) but there are also drawbacks. For me, it's not something that I worry about. I hope this helps.
