    I'd absolutely go for the Canon. It's relatively cheap, and the lens lineup is huge and way more affordable than Sony. What's the point of having a DSLR with just one lens?

      It didn’t have any good aps-c lenses, now they finally have. But with Canon aps-c lineup you could get a tele, a standard and an ultra wide zoom for like 400 total

      Hi guys, I am new or beginner in dslr business. I don't know anything about dslr camera's. The G85 was indeed was under my radar but at that time it was little more expensive for me. So in Holland I could buy a Canon 200D/SL2 with a lenses 24mm/f1.4 and 50mm/f1.8 for 700€. It was a discount action a few months ago. I believe it was not bad to start and get some experience with DSLR camera's. Conclusion: For my budget was canon 200D/SL2 the best option. I believe you have much better options out their. I wait and see what 2018 will bring for budget 4K camera. Thanks for your helps or advices, I will make better choices in the nearby future because of you guys. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

    I had a Sony, wx350, point and shoot, before I got my a6000, so the menu scheme was not a problem, as I was
    familiar... I think the a6000 is a great camera at it's price point, (about $150.00, US less than the sl2 with the kit)
    The auto focus is very good and the a6000 is pretty good in low light and I do like the smaller form factor... Thx, Moses.

  • @yixuz42
    @yixuz42 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I own both of them, prefer SL2. The touch screen on SL2 and Dual Pixel autofocus is just a clear win... I also like the lens selections of Canon. I have 24mm f2.8 pancake, 40mm f2.8 pancake, 10-18mm wide angle, and of course 50mm f1.8. They are all very affordable, and super lightweight and small. I use 5D4 for serious photos, 80D+400mm f5.6 for wildlife, and SL2 for casual or long hiking. If used in the right way, the difference between 5D4+L lens and SL2 plus pancake lens is not that significant on instagram. On computer or large screen, the difference is obvious.
    I'm going to give A6000 to my mom, to replace her point-and-shot. My only concern is that she might get annoyed by the battery life. Otherwise, A6000 is also a great intro-camera.

    Great video. I would definitely use the Canon. I've owned the Sony a5100 once upon a time and really didn't like the feel and menus. I've owned a few Canons at this point and they are all easier to use. Thanks for making this.

    • @acemakerjay

      My wife has the A5100 and SL2 now and she wants to carry both around. A5100 a little smaller and she likes it for vlogging. Wished it had an internal mic.

    I love my SL2, it can achieve such an amazing picture quality despite how small it is! It's great that Canon trickled down so many features into this camera especially the Digic 7 processor, Dual-Pixel AF, and the same 24mp APS-C sensor as the 77D and T7i. I literally went 4-5 days straight of golden hour shooting sessions each for about 3-4hours with the camera on/standby, taking roughly 30-50 shots (20 of them w/liveview for landscape focus stacking) and only by day 4 it finally dropped from full battery meter to 2/3 battery meter...talk about great battery life! The main reason I chose the SL2 as my first camera was because I always loved the look and feel of DSLRs, but wanted something small enough to have the versatility to eventually try street photography without the sacrifice of lens choices for other photography disciplines like wildlife and landscape photography. I am more than pleased with my investment and I will probably continue to use this camera for years to come easily :)

    For any Canon beginner, I'd absolutely recommend the t7i/800D instead of this SL2. Only because of that Slower and ancient View Finder focusing system.

    Thanks for sharing. SL2 was my choice. Though I am sure I could work with both, the SL2 is simply a joy to use, so am sure I use it more and as a result create more opportunities. For video work, the touch focus is superb. Fantastic for rack focusing.

    My first "serious" camera was a Sony NEX6. I never used a full size DSLR so for me the small grip feels more natural.
    I guess it's what you are used to that truly defines what is comfortable.

    I have owned both, and currently still own the 200D (I'm based in the UK). The dual pixel AF also works for stills in live view mode, and I find myself tending to use it like a mirrorless camera that happens to have a mirror box than the other way around. Results from this camera when combined with lenses like the Sigma 24-105 Art, or the Canon L series equivalent are outstanding.

    A great review of contrasting cameras -- nicely done. I love my Sony A6300. It's my grab and go camera. Since I mostly shoot in A-mode, I don't find the controls daunting. I would love that dual-pixel autofocus, but I also want great video quality that the A6300 has.

    Toby - I’m a canon shooter and just bought the Fuji xt20. In my experience the weight is a huge benefit but the bigger benefit is the glass. I was in Italy for 10 days and took camera everywhere. Always had the 18-55 and 10-24 with me with a manfrotto pixi mini in my pocket! That would never happen with my canon t2i on which I have a 15-85 lens.

    • @sl2608
      @sl2608 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      15-85 is a heavy and kind of big lens. I wouldn't travel with it either. But I HAVE travelled with the SL2 and it was sheer joy.

    I can throw in my opinion on this youtube video as I have recently come back from 15 day cruise holiday in the Caribbean. I took with me canon 7D, sigma 17-70 f2.8 DC lens, EF 24-105L IS USM Lens, 580EX mkII speedlite, Sony NEX5R with 18-55 f4-5.6 OSS and 16mm OSS f.2.8, and not forgetting my samsung galaxy s7 smart phone.
    Firstly the 7D is by far the best camera to use and is best all rounder with fast auto focusing, decent video, 2 lens give me close and far reach capabilities, plus easy to change modes & settings. Down side large, heavy, takes a lot of room on my day bag when on shore Excursions, plus locals notice your gear very easily. One last point is i did a lot of ambient photos on deck with a setting sun with the 7D and the speedlite. Which worked really well and got some great photos. Now when I asked people to take a photo of me and the wife I had to explain a long while on how to use 7D as no one had ever use a dslr ( there are of course people on ship with dslr's they were never around d when I needed them ) and it was heavy for them to hold. The biggest issue was no one was use to a eye view finder on a camera !
    The Sony nex5r was very to carry around and video is very good. It does not look expensive and blends in very well. It is easy to take to ship restaurants, bars etc as I could put it in my jacket pocket. Down side are bright sun light on the screen makes almost impossible to compose a shoot. Trying to change settings in the poor sony menu is difficult enough and ever more so when you can see the screen in bright sun light. No off camera flash means ambient shots on deck with a setting sun were very challenging as time and fill light is not on my side !
    The main reason people use smart phones is easy off use. Photos around the bars, dinning tables, swimming pools, candid shots were so easy with the smart phone. With the Pro feature on the s7 I can get ambient shoots, silky water fall photos etc. Main draw back for me is no zoom, no ability to trigger of camera flash.
    I do need a smaller dslr like the 200d for traveling as it gives me almost best of all world's, though not the top performing in each category I can use my good glass on the 200d and the 580EX mkII speedlite . Buying into top sony G master glass will cost me a fortune considering I already own 2 L grade canon lens. At the moment I would need faster AF and more AF points, thumb stick to be a perfect small travellers dslr. If those features were on the 200d I would buy it now !
    The smart phone IMO gives the best play back due to screen size and high resolution. Camera manufacturers need to look a smart phone app developers to improve reviewing, renaming, sharing and editing photos stored on the camera.
    Sorry for the essay, so one last point to mention. I did video the resident dance tutor couple performing a show case dance from a high view ponit on all 3 devices. The dance couple like the smart phone footage best as it was clear ( even though the scene was in low light ) as it was shoot in 4k and viewed on a high resolution screen and easily transferred to their smart phone. I had no laptop with me so transferring files was not happening from my 2 cameras.
    We live in an instant world which needs to be incorporated in to cameras to compete with some very capable smart phones.

    I almost bought the SL-1 but got the 3Ti instead because of it articulating screen particularly. I like the compactness of the SL-2 with its new features I'd be tempted to replace the T3i with it. I looked at the Sony mirrorless system and their limited lens selection was a turn off for me.

  • @borism68
    @borism68 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    To me the big problem with sony is the Lens Selection, particularly with aps -c line, is not great, is limited and expensive. Then you have the master series while nice and sharp are huge and super expensive. Canon value on the long run is better imo, you have more Lens to choose from. More used market , more 3rd Patty Lens and accessories at better price points. I would love to see a Canon sl2 with a EVF, that would be a hit I think.

    • @timryan6395
      @timryan6395 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can adapt virtually any vintage (any most modern) glass to my a6000. I'm not sure where you came up with that line of thinking. Sony may not have as much native glass as Canon, but the mirrorless world has opened up a lot of possibilities. I have a whole set of early 60's russian glass I use on my A series camera for a vintage look in video and photography. There are tons of options out there. Anymore, most camera systems are pretty darn good- pick your brand

    • @borism68
      @borism68 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tim Ryan yes you can adapt other Lens, but is not native , not as fast and not as small , plus you need then to spend more money on the adapter. But if that works for you then that is great. I am Just putting out my opinion.

    • @gudmgu
      @gudmgu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When Sony users adapt lenses they are usually adapting Canon mount lenses.

    • @dadanardi5541
      @dadanardi5541 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      they usually adapt any lenses they already have before, might it canon or some vintage lenses. Buying new pricy L canon lenses to be specifically to be adapted is stupid move.

    I had Canon EOS 450D and was thinking about going up to 90D or something (when it comes out). However, I realized that maybe after those 10 years I don't have to go up to get better rig. And EOS 200D (SL2) beats my old camera in virtually every aspect, obviously. I don't regret this buy at all. Is it perfect? No. It's smaller and AE lock is kinda hard to reach now, and there are other small annoyances. But there are tons of benefits! Video, articulated touch display, 24mpx, processor, fast live view... I mean, for this price, I'm totally satisfied. My plans to go up their line to two-digitD camera is postponed for many years. :-) Bravo, Canon, this little thing has the right muscle for the right price.

    I love my a6300, but the SL2 looks like a great option, especially as a family video camera. I use a G85 for most video, but that Canon DPAF would be super nice, as would that lens lineup!

    I think I prefer the Sony. I know that I can get adaptors and add cheap lenses and it seems like it has more options. I wish it had an articulating touch screen, but there are always trade offs.

    It's a tough question but I think that the Sony's smaller size would tip the scales for me. (Currently learning about photography on a Canon 20D that I bought about 14 months ago. I'll probably stick with it through this year.)
    I've watched several of your videos over the past few months, including some that are a few years old. The information has always been good but you have become a very polished teacher/presenter. I hope you have a great 2018.

    I have a FZ-200 looking to upgrade, was looking at the T7i and never knew the SL2 was the little brother until now. Seems good enough as an upgrade to get the better sensor higher MP and touch track focus. I see the A6000 and it feels a bit hollow. WHat I'd miss form the FZ-200 is the 12fps burst rate and mic & headphones jacks non shared. What I gain is APS-C 2x the megapixels and touch screen and track focus. Thanks for making the video! Well done I wish the pace was a bit faster as a view several videos by other people, I want to cut to he chase! But that's me.

    I went from Nikon to a Sony a6000 wanted a smaller camera and I started doing more writing than photography that was August of 2017 in October got a 7Dmkii and now getting a SL2.
    The SL2 is a better choice for me since I'm getting back into videos again.
    I like the Sony a6x00 series a lot, I do have pro and cons about them though.
    Where the a6000 comes into its own as a second camera along with my DSLR its great for when I'm doing events and might want to share pictures on social media, the wifi is very good, auto focus is very fast. Battery issues I don't have them two batteries are enough for me.
    The SL2 for me being able to use my Canon lenses, the flip out screen are my main points
    1080 vs 4k most people are watching on mobile devices, 1080 is more than enough, If I had a 4k capable camera I would still probably shoot in 1080 anyway.
    I don't have to pick the SL2 is my choice.

    After I reviewed a number of cameras like Canon T6, Canon T6i, Canon T6, Canon T6i, Sony a6000, Sony a6300, Panasonic G7, Nikon D3400, Nikon D5600 Andrés Canon SL2, I decided to buy the lady because in the end, it gave me the best value for my money and needs like an amateur photographer.
    If you compare the SL2 to the T6 and T7 models, tthe latter have an older image processor, the Panasonic is older and the Sony models have not a articulated LCD.
    Msybe the camera's price is different in Chile, e.g. SL2 cost around US$ 1.000 and both T6 and T7 cost around US$ 400 and US$500. However, the features are the same.

    Great video! As primarily a storyteller I d probably choose the SL2. 4K is great but so many films have been make before 4k was available As a film maker I should be able to tell a story with my Galaxy S9 cellphone. But that’s just me, If I had maybe 5grand to spend on a system I’d probably choose the A6500 or even the GH5 but the 1.4 or 1.2 manual lenes are gonna be a bigger financial investment. But the SL2 image quality seems to Be capable of telling the “STORY” which is my main focus........Story First. Thanks for this video AWESOME

I prefer sL2 because of new digic7 professor and the fact that it was dual pixel AF system. Couldn’t be happier. T7i,t6i, or sL2 are all great!! Not trying to get tangled up with nikon or Sony

    I understand not wanting to use the SLR parts of the SL2. It is sort of a good, if rather bulky, mirrorless camera without an EVF. As soon as you want a viewfinder though it becomes a rather poor SLR. Anyone who uses a viewfinder should go for the Sony A6x00.

      I have sl2 for videos, now i bought a sl3 for 4k. With good lenses you get awesome quality. I use sigma ART 18-35 and sigma ART 50-100mm, those lenses are the best lenses for Apsc sensor

    I'm really appreciate your review about these camera. But I'd love to see more specific comparison about burst shoot in moving object conditions (not in sports, just walk or jogging or spinning around). I'm confused of buying canon 200D and 800D because of focus points. I don't know if 200D can shoot moving object as accurate as 800D or not? And between canon 800D and sony a6000? Thank you so much! You don't need to make a video, if you can answer me (not base on specs), I would appriciate!

    I had the Canon sl1 and switched to the Sony a6000. I can get past the slightly clumsy Sony interface because I've gotten used to it but the biggest issues in my opinion are the non-touch screen focus and the lens range. Sony lenses are limited and overpriced. Way overpriced compared to the selection of second hand Canon lenses you can choose from. The deciding factor was that the Sony is a bit better in low light and the small size of the Sony can keep subjects more comfortable.

    I asked Google about reviews of Sony support. 1 is by far the most common I found, both for cameras and TV. Sometimes for gear valued at some tens of thousands of $US.
    Don't believe me, do your own check. Note, I'm talking about support, not cameras and TVs. The products are well regarded.

    • @dadanardi5541
      @dadanardi5541 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So support review is a thing now? are the review reliable and validated? is that before or after Sony launch camera dedicated support? The problem with many electronic customer companies is they outsource service to local 3rd party company, not only Sony but Canon, Panasonic, Ricoh, etc as well. I share my own frustation about my canon printer which took 4 month to service, cmooon.

    Excellent video. No one wants to move from their smartphone to a dslr to NOT get magic coming from a $600-$1200 purchase. Canon video and photos just look the most pleasant and magical to my eyes, which if photography/videography is to be viewed as an art then this is what matters most. I watch videos all day of people talking about tech sheets, mainly “I jumped ship to Sony from canon because of specs” well, that’s doing beginners an injustice because beginners will literally only care about artistic magic....and Canon’s got it. ....(and before someone jumps down my throat about the use of a subjective word like “magic”, just remember photography is an artform, if you don’t know or feel magic when you see it then maybe art just isn’t your thing)

    • @dadanardi5541
      @dadanardi5541 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      and for fair comparison, people usually pick Sony when they are more experienced and know how to overcome things like colour in post processing. Sony's colour is never good out of the box but when you are fidling with it even in the camera setting you will surprise of how Sony's cameras potential is, the setting are not just the plain contrast, colour, DR optimizer, picture style etc, but also more advanced stuff like gamma, colour spaces, knee, colour phase, etc Also a lot of people i know pick Sony because of the powerful raw and isoinvariant sensor.

  • @timryan6395

    JMO, but the autofocus system on the A6000 series kicks Canon's butt all day long (especially in the video department) and I can use virtually any vintage glass on the A6000 series, which opens tons of possibilities for creative photography or film making.

    • @adrianpocea2287
      @adrianpocea2287 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tim Ryan especially NOT in the video department. In the photo you may wanna say. Canon DPAF not only is better for tracking, but is waaaay more controllable via touch screen and it looks much smoother and cinematic. Non native lenses have no autofocus in video. Yes, when he compared the pictures of the kid on the swing, Canon colors looked way better, richer, contrastier, tastier

    I wonder why you didn't talk about prices. Do you have some interest in pushing Sony products? I mean, you are comparing a Sony Camera that costs 900 dls. against a Canon product that is 300 dls. cheaper! That should make up for the small differences that you see in the end results of both products. That is called value, and it is very important for most of us consumers! All in all, keep up the good work with your videos!!
