People don't know to read, it says What makes Aretha Franklin great? Not Why,why should, or why shouldn't. This is about learning from her not criticizing her. This is exactly why Beth is talking about her.

Aretha didn't begin to lose any of her vocal heft until the early to mid 1980s, and even then she bested 93% of all contemporaries.

Something else she does, common with many of the best singers is the way she can slide in and out of notes to add a dynamic to them without making it sound like she is hunting for it.

Beth, thank you for a very interesting and informative video. I’ve been an Aretha fan since the sixties. Just one point I need to make, Mahalia was a big influence and regular visitor to the Franklin home but it was Clara Ward who actually helped bring Aretha up and taught her how to deliver a gospel rendition. Thanks again for posting.

Jerry Wexler had early noticed the talent of Aretha and couldn't wait for her contract with Columbia Records to expire. He concidered her like a Diamond in the rough a talent too big to waste on only doing Blues/Gospel/Jazz standards. He convinced the bosses of Atlantic to sign her. Jerry was kinda fed up with the way they were recording in New York and brought Aretha and her husband at that time down to FAME studios in Muscle Shoes, Alabama. However when there the sessions didn't really like took off. All they had to work with was a shitty demo made in New York. Aretha had no ideas just like Jerry and the band and he found himself thinking "are things gonna get screwed up before they even got started?!" Then all of a sudden Jerry heard the keyboard player Spooner Oldham just playing something randomly and asked him to play it again! What he played is what we know as the intro to Never Loved a Man (The Way That i Loved You). which became her breakthrough hit! As in many cases the magic happens right there in the moment. Who knows what may have happen if Jerry hadn't heard what Spooner played and immediately know that was the missing piece of the puzzle. Everything she did between 1967-80 is magical when her voice and career was at their prime.

This is very interesting; thank you. Aretha has been my favorite singer since late 1967. I have all of her albums and I have played them extensively. It's too bad that she did not see the harm that smoking would do to her voice, although I've read that Ahmet Ertegun at Atlantic Records gently suggested to her that she was smoking too much. I was very happy when she had her 1980s come-back with Freeway of Love, even though it was apparent that there was some raggedness to her tone. I can't imagine what popular music, culture, or life in general, would be without her unmistakable sound, and her influence on generations of singers who came after her. We are so fortunate to have had her during our lifetime. Thank you, once again for such a thorough tribute and explanation.

Grew up listening to her, Carole King and Helen Reddy. They all sung well and did something for women. Aretha and her girls were great in Blues Bros. 2002 with R-E-S--P--E-C-T . Aretha showed us how a woman can sing ( even though Linda Ronstadt is my all time favourite) . She sand for women and Black People and did it well. ( Terry from Oz).
