    Nina's version of "Feeling Good" is one of THE greatest vocal performances ever put to record. Absolutely breathtaking. I remember watching a TV talent show where some young singers were asked to perform that song, and I just thought "that's not fair". You could be a great singer and give a great performance, and still not get within touching distance.

    • @robertcronin6603
      @robertcronin6603 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally...that's terribly unfair unless you're a virtuoso who could match that? ... especially for the young.

      Some recordings and songs, you just don’t touch and that is definitely one of them, even Muse’s successful version of ‘Feelin’ Good’ sounds like a mediocre pub band next to Nina’s recording.

    Nina, Sarah, Ella and Billie were my jazz “aunties” growing up. I idolized them (and still do). I was lucky to have seen Nina in concert twice, just a couple of years before she left us. Nina was just a little bit more beloved to me back then (35/40 years ago) and while I still love and adore her, in my late teens/early twenties, I began to fall more deeply in love with Sarah…for me, Sarah Vaughan was the greatest vocalist of them all…apparently Ella thought so to…would you consider reacting to Sarah? I’d love to hear your thoughts/observations on her. Thanks for your wonderful posts. I enjoy them all greatly. Best wishes from California 🥰🥰🥰

    Her version of Feeling Good is definitive, to my ear. It runs so against expectations, creating a sort of gravity well that draws the listener down to the depth of the song's ambivalent subtext. Great special, Beth.

    That was great. Nina was such an important figure in modern music. As important as Jimi Hendrix, John Coletrane, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Billie Holiday. And what an incredible voice! So rich, so much texture and emotional content. She really deserves to be better known, and this video should help.

    If only Nina Simone could have seen this video in her lifetime. Once I read an interview with one of her Dutch friends (she lived in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, for some time) who told about how insecure she could feel, even to the point of her putting one of her own records on the turntable and asking him if it was any good. Yes Nina, it was good. Not only good, but great. You were a true genius.
    Thank you for this wonderful channel, Beth. I just 'discovered' it last week and have been enjoying the videos every evening, and shedding quite a few tears of emotion... music has a way of doing that. Especially the Billie Holiday and Mariza videos were excellent. Good job!
    Also compliments for how you summarized the concept of counterpoint.
    Greetings from The Netherlands, Bob (amateur Baroque organist, amateur Renaissance singer)
    PS: maybe in the future you can do react videos of Baroque singers? There are spectacular performances available on TH-cam.

She sings with her entire body and from the deepest parts of her culture and it’s soul. thanks for this Beth. you have excellent content and your delivery is so accessible and immediately understood. Note she's not the mother, godmother or even goddess of soul. She's the high pristress. She transcends between divinity and reality, she walks both the world of men and gods, as she transcends music, technique, feeling and soul. I think it's a very fitting title. It's not a limiting role in my eyes, as it's not one that locks her into either realm - she's a force of nature, a connection. Not a mundane pristress either as she doesn't preach. She's a gift. And I absolutely live for her song.

    I got to see her in Chicago toward the very tail end of her career. It was annoying that the audience called out for their favorite songs. I felt sorry for Nina, who looked harassed and put out. She wasn’t at the top of her game for all of the songs, like Mississippi Goddamn, but “I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl” was one of the sweetest things I’ve ever heard.

    Please react to Ben Platt's cover of Somewhere over the Rainbow. He is really great. Also, interspersed Judith Light gives brief commentary about the origins of the song, forever making this a song very much more beautiful and important because it's actually about human freedom in the face of oppression and cruelty. It's a great cover and Ben is technically magical. Please give us your insight.

    I used to love the singing of Nina Simone until I found out how deeply and evilly cruel she was to her poor little daughter for so many years. No matter how great she was as an artist I refuse to listen to her now. Some can separate the work of and artist from the content of their personal life. I cannot. The physical and mental cruelty and torture Ms. Simone committed upon her little girl is inexcusable. I loved her talent in singing, piano, and her songwriting but no more. I have no desire to listen to a child abuser sing to me about social justice, love, or peace. Each of you must decide for yourselves on this. For me? I have extincted her from my musical world.
