  • I beat this game on normal, but I have yet to make it all the way through on HARD. The missiles are insane to try and avoid on a few bosses. That is my problem area. If anyone has any advice on that particular part of the game, I'm all ears to try it again.

It amazes me how Mike can play a game like this well and keep a conversation going at the same time.

I just finished watching this and see some things I think would help, but I haven't played the game this far myself:
    1) The green laser destroys the missiles, but they take damage before dying. The clearest demonstration is at 3:22:00. You destroyed 6 volleys of missiles there. I also saw it happen with weaker green lasers, but obviously high level works the best.
If you can bring a reasonably strong green laser to the Nightmare Boss, and position yourself below the missiles when they come out, you might be able to destroy a lot of them, or do enough damage that the side-ships can finish them off.
    2) Form-reverse might help kill the missiles also, because your ships will shoot behind you when you dodge. That's where the missiles will be.
    3) If you get to the Nightmare Boss but lost the laser, try switching to Form-Free. In that formation, the ships get in the boss' face and shoot him until they die. This maximizes how much damage they can do in a short time. They might also block or distract some of the missiles. You'll lose a lot of side-ships with this strategy but I think this is what you're saving them up for.
    4) You're losing a lot of side-ships on level 3 because they hit the walls, especially in narrow passages. It looks like Form-Reverse would fix that. In form-reverse, the ships are at the front and back of your ship so they won't hit the walls.
Form-Reverse also made them safer against the fireballs on the level 1 boss, because their position reduces how far they need to move to get out of the way.
I noticed on your last attempt when you used form-reverse, you were starting to get more ships than you've ever had before, because they weren't dying as much.
    ==============
Appendix) From your commentary I can tell that you're a thumb pusher. :) You might be better off if you try to use your fingers with this game, so you can tap the A button more easily. I switched to fingering during the NES days so 3-fingering the Genny came naturally to me, but I know it might be awkward if you aren't used to it. I never thought about this before but I can see how you'd prefer the SNES pad if you're a thumbs guy.
Appendix B) When you get to the hard bosses, don't reset until you've played it through. Those are rare opportunities to practice, if nothing else. You only get a few seconds at it for each playthrough, so don't pass it up when you get there.
The missiles have a limited turning radius, so individually they aren't too hard to evade, but what makes it hard is when they're scattered around you and coming in from different directions. The firing pattern of the Nightmare Boss creates that scenario.
When you steer them into more of a group they get easier to get away from. That's why going behind the boss might help - because it will tend to result in all the missiles going nearly the same direction to reach you, which causes them to group up some. Then you can move down the screen with the missiles above you, which is a good firing opportunity.

Best Genesis shooter, which probably makes it the best shooter of the 90s, period. So many amazing games in that genre on the platform, and MUSHA stands out even amongst the best of the best. Genesis Did (H E H) for shooters what the SNES did for JRPGs. Criminal it wasn't on the Mini - least, not in the US

It is hard to choose, several good on Mega Drive. But best of 90`s? Hmm.. My vote goes to Raiden, I just love Raiden. But then again, I also love MUSHA, and others. The Raiden Project on PSX is an absolute favorite. I even really like Raiden Trad on Mega Drive.

And because I can't catch you on Twitch mainly because of my schedule with work and such. Always enjoy watching your streams man. Makes my day at times. Keep it up man!

With the 4th boss at 2:51:25 who fires the missiles, you can shoot down most if not all of the missiles before impact!! And then dodge the remaining 2 or 3 that you couldn't destroy. That's what you gotta do, but on the final level, you have to dodge most of them. Don't give up! You can do it!
Super stoked to see you playing this super awesome game, which came out in 1990, on just a tiny .5 megabyte cart, blew everything else on the market away in graphics, performance (tons of sprites, scaling, parallax), and sound and gameplay, a real Genesis/16-bit achievement.

I would've loved to play this one when I was little. Probably wouldn't have cleared it though, maybe not even today. Mike, could you do a playthrough of Thunder Force 4 next? The greatest schmup of the 16-bit generation. That one was perfect, and a little nuts on the hardest difficulty.

My advice is to use only the blue/water power up. It gives you a shield that can help you survive boss battles. It powers up with multiple pick-ups, allowing you to take even more hits. I don’t remember exactly how the scaling works on it though. I remember using it for a normal play through and not dying much at all. I haven’t played M.U.S.H.A. in a long time, but I distinctly remember thinking that the blue power up was deceptively op.

When you increase your speed it makes the "reverse" pods detach and drag behind (3:34:07),
otherwise they seem stuck to you and only can decrease when you die (3:30:56).

It's funny to me that he compared this game to Ninja Gaiden earlier, because this is exactly how my experience with Ninja Gaiden ended.
This is the curse of hard games that have infinite continues. It encourages you to beat your head against the wall until you hate the game and go insane.
As a kid, I tried to force my way through Ninja Gaiden, and my game didn't end until I got so pissed off that I hit the NES with my little boy fist, crashing the game and cracking the door on the cart slot.
I swore off that evil game and have never played that far into it ever since. I last played it ~10 years ago with a ban on continues, died on level 2 and walked away.

    Hi Mike Matei.
Robo Warrior for NES is a good but hard game. It's like a puzzle if you are not into playing this, you could just pass. But if I miss the game play, It's okay I will try searching for the gameplay. Love the Gameplay of MUSHA by the way.

What an awesome game. Thanks for bringing it to all of our attention. Big respect for getting the original cartridge.
It would be interesting to hear your attitude towards, cleaning and long term keeping & maintenance of cartridges. I was saddened to see a few of my N64 cartridge lugs and connector pins showing superficial corrosion already,
Then I read the cartridge back label, which said along the lines of “it is recommended to clean cartridges every 12 months” O_O

I think this is the most expensive Genesis game out there, which sucks, cause this games fun. It sucks how much power you lose if you die though. But yea this is like $600+ CIB now which is nuts.
Edit - Also I think it would have helped him if he put his pods in a different position for when the heat-seeking missiles appear. Any of the side, reverse, or free form would have been pretty helpful.

I reckon an 80s nostalgia shmup like that NeoGeo one on PSP where its got yeh NeoGeo characters or suppose like Smash but not fighting, do a shmup one with a 80s/90s cartoons theme.
