Went to Paris two years ago with my 17 yo son who had taken four years of French. Nearly all the restaurant staff and other people we met were extremely cordial with him and helped him improve his French conversation. We were pleasantly surprised.

What you say is true. I dressed my daughter for her class trip to France. She needed to pack light, so she needed a few well coordinated pieces. She was a total opposite from her classmates, no makeup, black clothing, uncomplicated hair and ballet shoes. She also rocks a fedora. She was mistaken for a French woman many times.

All your advice was spot on. I’ll never forget traveling with a group of Americans, me too, and one woman complained about the food everywhere we went even telling the waiters “We don’t cook it like that in the US.” After about three days of this I pulled her aside and told her that if she wanted the food like at home then go home. She never said another word. As for dress, I always research the country to find out how to dress and what colors to wear. I try my best to blend in.

I was in Germany this past October and really struggled with the language barrier (I’m American). I got to the point where I was afraid to speak because I didn’t want to be a target. I tried to learn some German before I went but I didn’t learn enough to be functional. My advice would be to focus on directional terms, numbers, food names (especially if you’re vegetarian or have other dietary restrictions), and words that are very common in everyday language. I learned words like entrance, exit, street, stairs, escalator, elevator, etc. all in my first day because I had to get where I needed to go. I would have been much more relaxed if I had learned more before my trip.

Excellent travel advice, not only for Paris, but anywhere in Europe! I try to dress to blend in and not stand out, and totally agree that it shows respect for another culture to know some polite phrases and words! The best compliment I can get while travelling is if someone asks me for directions! Success, mistaken for a local! And my favourite souvenirs while travelling are scarves and jewelry- they don’t take up much space and are a lovely reminder of the trip. Thanks so much!

      I agree
Years ago my sister in law wanted to renew her wedding vows in Rome. I had traveled to Italy several b times before this, and was well aware of the cultural expectations. Plus I took 4 years of Italian in high school
I advised her to make sure
to be appropriately covered up, specifically her arm and chest
We’ll, she wore a sleeveless v neck, cleavage showing dress to the church bi could tell from the priest’s face that he was none too pleased. I tried to tell her to save the cleavage for my brother in law, but she didn’t listen. Dince there were others in tge church I think the priest kinda gave them the hurry up abbreviated version of a vow renewal.
She felt usher, snd slighted, snd tbh she was because she wasn’t dressed properly I wore a bling sleeved wrap dress with a hemline below my knees. She actually told me I looked silly dressed like that, because it was warm outside

Great travel tips Frederique. When I was last in Europe I followed many of the tips you mention. I wore minimal to no jewellery, no visible camera and wore a cross body bag which I kept in front of me with my hands resting on it the whole time. I never had any problems with theft. Dressing with respect to other cultures is also very important.

My partner and I were in Paris at the beginning of April and the biggest compliment we got was being asked twice for directions by French people. We were wearing smart casual clothes and trench coats both times. Also we learnt some French before we went there and in the two weeks we were in Paris only once did we have one grumpy waiter but he was rushed off his feet so it was understandable. We used the metro regularly and just like every big citykeep an eye on your bag.

Whenever I am in France people ask me for directions! Especially Germans and other Northern Europeans and Asians of all types. Unfortunately unlike you I am a complete slob, but I guess a French-looking slob =). It gets to the point that when I see Japanese people or Germans making any sort of eye contact I run away! The punchline is that I have the worst sense of direction ever - I can get lost in my home city.

I can not think of many worse things than cleaning dog muck of my shoe. It stinks and turns my stomach. It causes disease and nasty things if gets near the eyes. For me the romance has gone from Paris already. Thank you for advising us how to keep safe but it may come in handy in some cleaner place. Yes, we have dog muck here in England but very few people allow this now as there is a large fine plus other people will tell you off if they see your dog fouling the pavement or their gardens etc etc. As for thieves and scammers it is the same here.

As an European living in Canada (tomorrow will mark 20 years here), I could not agree more. If we could take the best of both cultures and implement it somewhere, it would be the perfect place on earth. ❤❤ I just got a reminder today that 5 years ago I was in Paris and just looked at some pictures on my phone. I lived in Japan two years. I arrived one evening and the next morning began pulling weeds along the road in front of our house. Soon I noticed everyone on the street was also pulling weeds. It turned out weeds were only pulled on Tuesdays. This was Friday. So everyone in the village pulled weeds too so I would not look bad. Lol

@Olesea Chiosa no lol. But once I saw a dog attacking a very elderly lady walking on the street. I ran outside and scared the dog away. While other neighbors performed first aid I followed the dog home. Thinking we could ascertain the dog was vaccinated for rabies. The next morning when we woke up I found little gifts of hand towels and handerkerchiefs On the front steps. My husband explained it was the people of the village thanking me for helping the grandma. 💕

Although I know I didn't know how to fit in when I first arrived...so, good advice here! It's so common to have your iPhone stolen when you're on the street (thieves on motorcycles snatch it as they drive by before you know what has happened), so best not to look at it when outside in crowds.

Oh Frédérique😃 You made me laugh a lot 🤣 I am Northern European who lives in Australia.. 2 years I spent with Italian in Barcelona and Rome and learnt from him how to detect tourists from all over the world. It was funny but also useful. Italians are extremely fashionable but a bit too flashy for me. 😃 I prefer French way.. When I lived in Rome and my daughter attended Italian school near Vatican, we used to go after her lessons to Cafés for snack (Italian school lunches are just amazing). So I spoke Italian (not very good but ok) and in one café poor waiter 🤣 tried very hard to speak with me in French. I didn't understand French back then 😅 I told him that I am not French (even though I look like). So I spoke Italian he speaks back in French and my daughter laughs.
About tips and tricks you are absolutely right.
Last time I was in Paris while having long waiting hours to go back to Australia via Singapore. I went to city centre to enjoy. Again fun fun 😄 I was wearing silk dress, ballerinas and linen summer coat - all in beige/camel tones.. So tourists stopped me and in basic French asked for directions.. I felt very bad that my French is so extremely limited 🤣
Only real French man understood that I am not French and we had small chat in English and coffee and goodbye kiss 😘
Love Paris 💖 In 6 hours I got everything, including Opera Garnier visit

Having a crossbody bag in front of you is key, i always wore it like that and i used subway and walked lots. There was only once that people did try to scam me asking to sign a petition. they literally shove that in your hands but my bag was crossbody in front of me and i refused firmly, plus a couple of very helpful gendarmes came to my aid. Omg that totally happened to me when I visited Paris! Got pretty much all my money stolen while I was distracted by a kid and a very well spoken woman asking for donations for charity, they looked quite legit in their approach and demeanor. I wasn't too touristy in my looks but i was like, alone and literally taking pictures of everything and asking people for directions so i was just naive and the perfect target. Finding the police station was super difficult and took most of my day wandering the streets alone with no money other than my train card, but even to this day I still wish I could return to enjoy the moments i was robbed with that money. Maybe one day :)

Metro workers didn’t do a thing to stop him! This was broad daylight in Central Paris! So one more piece of advice, folks: no jewellery and especially no expensive jewellery! As far as leggings, sweatpants, cropped tops… I can tell you there is plenty of that in the UK 😂

I love your style. Very good advice. I got similar advice some 30 years ago when traveling to Italy and it served me well. One scam involved small children showing you a piece a of paper. It did happen and just being prepared and taking certain measures to not become a victim kept me safe from any scams. I don’t like looking like a tourist so I blend in well most of the time when in Europe, No matter what country you travel from or too, everyone needs to be respectful of the customs and culture of that country.

Thankyou for this! I lived in the US back in 2002 as a student and I was literally in a state of shock when I saw kids wearing pyjamas to school! I could not believe my eyes.. still can not comprehend that. Then when in church people in their sweats and me in my 'Sunday best' 😁😁😁 What is that???

    • @pollysshore2539
      @pollysshore2539 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This would depend on where you stayed in 2002. I graduated high school in the early 90s and never saw students in pajamas. In the 2010s I started seeing Uni and then high school students in pajamas everywhere. I wore a lot of wild stuff to school, and I love what I call “pajama clothes”. They are not pajamas, and do not do look like pajamas at all (think a good quality linen outfit), but are comfortable enough to feel like them. That said… my mother would have killed me if I tried to leave the house in actual pajamas.
I haven’t been to church in decades, but I would have been in trouble if I tried to wear sweat pants.
Almost everyone wore their best. Even farmers with little money who only had a few pieces of clothes. They had their work overalls and their Sunday/go to meeting overalls. This was typically the only thing you saw outside of the Sunday best category.
I work 12 hour swing shifts at 911 and have definitely fallen into a rut with athletic wear on nights and weekends when working here and there over the last 20 years. I still love to dress up, though. I miss the days before the mundane polo shirt dress code on my weekday shifts. I used to wear dresses, skirts, etc. Some kept literally rolling out of the bed and into the office on the weekdays. They implemented a casual weekday dress code to combat it.

In the US, even wakes and funerals have gone Sloppy Casual, and that can include the deceased. And wedding attire....too many look like they are dressing to pole dance. Thank you for all your advice, which regarding safety, is also useful here in NYC.

@@janedavidson186 Yeah. I've seen short denim ragged shorts in church, stretched-out dirty t-shirt, shorts, and flip-flops at funerals and wakes. I do see Sunday-go-to-meeting clothes at some churches. Some people go out in public without a bath. THE HORRORS!

Waiting for my son in Paris. A woman approached me with the golden ring scam - I didn't know then it was a scam. I told it wasn't mine, I didn't want it, and she could have. She took it and left. At a Paris train station a young boy tried to sell me a magazine, I told him 2x I didn't want it and he persisted. Finally I told him in a very angry manner if he didn't leave me along I was going to scream and call the police. He understood anger and police and left. These incidents did not bother me and my visit to Paris was lovely.

Thanks for another great video Frederique. My husband and I are leaving on Wednesday for a month on the Italian/French Riviera and a month in the UK so I would have loved your video on what to take to Europe. We are going with carryon luggage only, which as you know is only 7kg from Australia- which is like nothing. Anyway, I am taking navy linen pants, white linen pants, black leggings (for exercise, not to wear in public!), 5 or 6 tops, a light denim jacket, 1 dress, a tankini, a hat, 1 pair of sandals and not much else. I’m already at my limit and haven’t ruled out wearing all my clothes onto the plane. I think going through security dressed as the Michelin Man definitely screams “tourist”!

When I returned home to Vancouver after 3 months in Europe I noticed how quiet the sidewalks were. People were wearing sneakers, yes hiking boots, rubber soled shoes. In Europe the hard soles and heels make noise on the sidewalk, I had gotten used to it.

This came just in time, as I am planning to go on a Danube River cruise going to Budapest, Vienna, and several other towns, and then Oberammergau for the Passion Play. My athletic clothes that I am packing are strictly for the fitness area on the ship-there is no way I will be wearing a skimpy tank top and yoga pants on the streets of Vienna, for example! No flip-flops for me either! The only heels I will pack are my 2.5-inch convertible strappy sandals to wear only in the evenings. My wardrobe is going to be dominated my skirts and dresses (and a pair of stylish jeans for possible cool weather and on the plane-I hate baggy pants and shorts). Can’t wait, as it will be my first trip since the pandemic started. 🇩🇪🇦🇹🇭🇺❤️
I have been learning Italian for fun (sadly not visiting Italy this year), so good to know how to pronounce “carne” 🥩 and “cane” 🐶, so I need to work on my Italian r’s, especially in “carne.” 😂

Great advices for many situations, not only when traveling. I stayed in Paris for a while and visited the tourist objectives and every time I noticed all those people with pens and papers, or those with some street games. If they approached I was like - Go away! or No no no! Sometimes they insisted, but I also insisted in No no no! Me, I keep moving and take my bag in hand in front if approached for whatever reason.
I love Paris, can't wait to see it again. Some day.
