This might not even matter, but our old black walnut went down in our city yard in 1983. We had it sawed into lumber which sat in our garage for 30+ years. Out darling son in law took pieces of it and made his dining room table and bread boards, etc. Our darling lost his battle with leukemia three years ago. His woodcraft will always live on. Much love to your family.

To you lovely people who commented .. our Noah’s heart beats on in ours. His art, his knowledge (he was a professor ),his humor (I once told him to carve me a greenman and he did because he thought it would make me laugh, his ability to look at the good in almost any situation, his amazing love for our precious daughter, his laughter, his light ... that is a fraction of what Noah left us. Oh, and the black walnut pieces. ❤️ I’ve gone beyond a comment on Ben’s table. Bless him .. his family. ❤️❤️
How wonderful that he could leave a legacy and a bit of himself that can be handed down through generations. The best part of being a craftsman is that you can pour your love into the things that you make and the people who use those things will always feel that love as they touch and use those items. What a touching story. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. I am glad for your family that you had such a fine man in your family. I am sorry that you had to be parted but at least you know that the parting is only temporary.

I like to buy antique furniture (usually mahogany) and refinish and have it re-apulstered. It lasts better than anything new.

We live in Maine and have learned never to mess with a cold hose, wire, or cord. Glad you found a fix.
Right. Set those things out in the sun or bring them in the house the night before. Plastic & rubber often shatter in the cold.

I am all for watching Ben build stuff regardless what it’s for, house or farm buildings.
Anything is tamale filling, my sister in law even makes cream cheese cilantro jalapen tamales, raisin tamales, dessert like!! Just use your imagination!!!!😊💞

That new furniture is getting more and more shabby as years go by. I am sold on getting the old stuff and reupholstering it. Your side tables look wonderful!!
We bought a sectional last June (2019). Normal use and it’s down to springs and wood frame.
@@bethany493 In the past 6 years my son and daughter in law have bought 3 couches and they fell apart right away. I will take the old stuff any day.

My husband built me many pieces of furniture over the years. We had so little money at times. They are, without exception, my favourite bits of furniture. The first ones he made were, “get this done, functional” level. Gradually, however, his furniture building abilities, and his time allowance to build grew. Now, although we can buy any furniture we need, he is still building solid well made pieces for me as need arises.

I like the bed being white-washed. it contrasts with the walls a bit and it also means that the white heating thing on the wall doesn't stick out. What is funny, is I usually like more natural wood.

Love the upcycling ! I had to do similar when I moved from the UK to New Zealand - didn't want to buy into cheap furniture so found a way to source wood pallets (Heat Treated so no chemicals involved) and turned these into bed side tables, coffee table, shelf, TV stand...I even ventured into doing my own concrete so some of the pieces combine recycle wood & home made concrete - so satisfying to see your own creations in the house ! Looking forward to more similar projects 🙂

I would at least wax the tops. This will help with not getting water rings.

I feel your pain over the furniture. When we married we had to combine houses. We preferred his couch and chairs but my coffee table, end tables and matching corner storage cabinet were all real wood, Amish made, Dove tailed connections, no glue, real furniture. They worked great. One day I come home from work and they are gone. He saw some modern style things and bought them. Someone going down the road saw my stuff in the yard and asked if he could have them, so hubby gave them to him. Pieces that cost a lot as they would have lasted for 100 years or more and they were gone! This modern stuff lasted maybe 16 months before they began to split from glue drying and peel from cheap varnish. 10 years later and I'm still wanting my old set back, lol

I love making Tamales, but it is a time consuming job! perfect for a cold day to keep people busy. Love you ingenuity, and ability Ben! Bonus is the encouragement that we just need to do it!
I love everything primitive as well, but we recently found out all our old barn wood things had lead, even though they weren't painted. What we learned to encapsulate: wear a mask, wet down the surface!! so particles don't fly into the air as easily, and do the manual sanding/scraping outside but on something that will catch all the little paint/finish pieces, wash clothes right away, and poly a couple times at least. You don't really want to sand thoroughly as you want to just get off anything that is falling off and then encapsulate the rest of the paint/stain with the poly. Even our poly stuff looks like we wanted it too now, and we feel safer with the kids being by it all.
I watch because you build stuff. I watch and learn. When I have my homestead I know just what to do, and not do. Please keep building stuff.

Dear Meg and Ben, love your videos, so interesting. My late husband who was a joiner by trade, made all our coffee tables, some almost sixty years old, a corner cupboard for china, a cabinet for our TV and DVD player, and our dining room table. All have stood the test of time. Some of our other furniture belonged to my grandparents, and his grandfather. I have cringed at the modern things, one of my sons had the table my parents bought on their marriage in 1937, and prior to this, it was passed round other family members. Since they parted with it, the table has gone to a friend. I wrote the history of it, by the way. Best wishes from Susan in UK.

Every time I see the inside of your house I am in awe at how good it looks.
You need to have a bonnet or some kind of hat on your little baby. She could get ear infections.
Wind does not cause ear infections. Maybe the baby doesn’t like hats or bonnets.
Hats are used to keep in our body heat, as heat escapes through our head, especially in babies.. wearing a hat helps maintain body temperature.
There are many things children might not like, but some things are done because its in their best interest/ health/ or safety..
Really like how the tables came out. I would finish them shirley with some danish oil just for a nice but not over powering finish.

Ok.. In the beginning of the video, I was like why is Meg bouncing? Totally didn't see the baby and thought she needed a potty break. LOL!!! YES!! Home made furniture is the best. Hence why antiques are popular cause folks know that's the best made furniture. Seems like today, sadly everything is ment to be disposable so you have to buy it again. On trend or not, it is what makes your heart smile that matters! Hugs and kisses to that beautiful bundle of joy and to all her wonderful protectors!!

Very simple and great! Good job! Remember, you can always stain both bed and side tables with lighter stain in case you want contrast but still give natural and simple shade.

Watching the build I thought about the difference between what a furniture maker would have done and your efforts in creating your bedside table I am so glad that you have created your new tables as you have done they will be a sturdy spot to hold your water and will make life long memories for the kids. I have the cedar chest my dad made me ,it has been a coffee table a toy box a Christmas ornament box someday your table might become a treasured plant stand I have a table much like it in my office to hold my printer. My parents were makers too they taught me by example that I could do it myself whatever it was!🖖🖖🖖🖖👍👍👍👍🥇🥇🥇🥇💖💖💖💖💖😀😃😄😁

Those tables look great! Nearly fifty years ago my husband made our tables and they have lasted all those years. The only problem with leaving the wood raw is that if you set drinks on it or spill anything on it - sometimes it will make a spot that won't come off. Well made homemade furniture is a wonderful thing to have.
