That gun looks suitable for defense against pirates, buccaneers and corsairs... or any other kind of scallywags who might be trying to steal your ship!

Arrrrrrr! Keep your hands off my booty!

Might I add rapscallions, miscreants and scalawags to your list of scoundrels and need' do wells?
Tip: This may have already been covered. When you come up with a known load for your muzzle loader, place a mark on your ramrod to represent where it should match the end of your barrel when your gun is properly loaded. If you insert your ramrod into a loaded barrel and it fails to closely match your mark, you will know something was loaded improperly.

Howdah ya do!....(sorry, I cc couldn't help myself 🙄)
I have both the Howdah and standard long gun version, lots of fun skeet shooting or hunting. Both guns are 20 ga, the muzzle ID is .612, actual 20 ga wads are too loose, you need to be concerned about the shot or ball moving forward in the unfired bbl, this is the same regardless of brand. Black powder shotgun wads come in odd gauges, both work guns well with 19 ga wads, not 20 ga. Lube the sides of the cushion wad, when you ram it down the bbl it will shave a small amount off similar to loading a cap and ball revolver and provides an excellent gas seal. Shooting round ball with 75 gr of Triple Seven ffg, a .610 ball with a .010 Ox Yoke Originals lubed patch over a card wad (over powder wad) works well but adding a lubed cushion wad seems to be slightly more accurate. I get 2" or less groups @ 10 yds with the Howdah, not bad for just a front bead sight at least in my opinion. For shot loads I use 75 gr Triple Seven, 1 oz #00 buck, #4 buck, #5 nickel plated or a combination. At 20 yds the pattern is even and symmetrical, no blow out. Wear a shooting glove with the Howdah, recoil from shooting the .610 ball can tear several layers of skin off of the middle finger behind the trigger guard from the knuckle all the way down to where the finger meets the hand, I have the scars to prove it. Using shot can cause damage as well but it is a little kinder, gentler and does not dig as deep into the finger. I bought the long gun back in the 70s, the bbl is not chrome lined, I bought the Howdah 9 or 10 yrs ago and it is chrome lined. A chromed bbl still needs to be cleaned after use, some people seem to think the chrome lining makes the gun invulnerable to rust or fouling that is not the case. You should swab the bore with a lubed patch after each shot for best results. To be more efficient, I purchased some small centrifuge vials with attached cap on eBay they hold my 1 oz shot loads, I no longer measure shot, I simply fill a bunch of vials with shot and toss them in my possibles bag, for powder I use a flask with a set of spouts rated for different charges, you don't need to measure just put your finger over the end of the spout, depress the lever to fill the spout then dump it down the bbl. Loading BP shotguns is a little more involved compared to loading rifles so establish a routine that works best for you otherwise you will end up pulling a lot of wads from your unfired gun or possibly double charge a bbl. Respect black powder guns, although not as powerful as modern firearms they have been used in war for centuries all over the world and have killed hundreds of thousands if not millions of people (more likely), 50,000 + died at the battle of Gettysburg due to BP firearms. BP is not for everyone, some try it out of curiosity and then put it aside, like me, the first shot might give you a serious addiction. I have had this monkey on my back for over 50 years and I never get tired of it.
I will advise to try out goex or swiss powder you see a difference i use the indian trade gun and ive had bad experience in my long rifle with triple seven i use goex or swiss. More accurate and a bit more velocity. You wont want to use triple seven anymore. I use 2f in both my long arms 3 for pistols
also, when you shoot the short variant both handed with your support hand resting on the underside, make sure it is far away from the left barrel nipple. The blowby will sting :)
What is the comparable power of these? 38 actual 20 ga?,
An additional note. I finally found #11 caps! I also found and bought my own Howdah! Shipped as a "kit" (which involved finishing the wood and adding the grip weight) to my front door. There is room for personalizing the stock to make it all yours. Thanks for the video guys!

I really like these videos. I've been watching these off and on for years. It's like going shooting with a friend but without the $20 range fee.
Using the same measure for both powder and shot (equal volumes), was very common. It was referred to as a "square load", and was considered to be the ideal loading ratio for MZ shotguns. Variations were, of course, allowable, but most used a square load.
Always loved these since I first saw The Ghost and the Darkness w/ Michael Douglas and Val Kilmer. One of my favorite movies!
As always Mr. Hickok, it's a great pleasure watching your videos. You mix history, practicality, and most of all safety, into a brilliant work of art because it flows so effortlessly.. A true gift for sure. Anytime I meet someone who is interested in firearms or that is just beginning their journey into this world, I always recommend them to your channel. Your down to earth personality, quest for knowledge, and great sense of humor helps our cause much more than most realize. I grew up on the old westerns from Gene Autrey and John Wayne, to my all time favorite, Clint Eastwood. My father has a .50 cal muzzleloader which was my first introduction to BP. He explained to us how the very same type of rifle was used to start our Nation, as well as the same type of rifle that almost destroyed it in the Civil War. As children growing up in a hunting family, he wanted to teach us how far firearms and ammunition have evolved but also, most importantly without saying, what was actually involved in going to battle with these weapons. Watching old movies about these subjects with opposing sides lined up parallel to each other, firing, and standing in the same spot reloading while getting shot at is absolutely mind-blowing! Yes tactics evolved from this over time, but imagining standing in the pouring rain trying to reload your musket with your countrymen being hit or killed on either side of you, and the sound of the musketballs flying only feet away from your head, really should chill every man to the bone! If every American only thought of the sacrifice our Founders made at this level, there would never be a situation like we are now experiencing. For the elderly man shook while shedding tears of fright just as much as the 12 year old child fighting next and across from him as he tried desperately to not make any mistakes while reloading. Thank you and your son for all that you do.
Hickok45, The only older gentleman, aside my grandfather, I will let talk for hours and hours on end. Thanks Hickok.
sometimes its well worth your while letting an old guy talk
All my friends are older than me. Except like 1 or 2
And I'm 23, my friends are all around 40.
Hickok, I've always appreciated that you often include a bladed weapon that corresponds with whatever firearm you're featuring in your videos! The Second Amendment addresses the right to bear ARMS not just firearms. Whether it be a Bowie knife, a tomahawk, or a cavalry saber, you seem to appreciate what I call the "kit mentality". In the age of single-shot firearms, if you had a mechanical failure, missed, fired too early, etc., you darned-well BETTER have something sharp and pointy to defend yourself against whoever/whatever you just unsuccessfully just tried to shoot!
This reminds me of Remington's pistol from The Ghost in the Darkness (I think that one was converted for shells). Good stuff!
Every time a new video is posted, I think "what have I done to deserve this gift"? Love this guy!
Thanks. Good to know there are people on YOUR end of the spectrum! At the other end, it goes like this: Ah, Hickok45 posted a new video; let me get there quick to be the first to "dislike," hate, and TROLL. Takes all kinds. :-)
hickok45 while people have the right to dislike the content, it seems like there are dislikes immediately upon posting..
First off great video! I saw the dislikes and I thought maybe they watched a video and had autoplay enabled, left to go smoke some pots, lost track of time and accidently disliked your vid thinking it was the previous video. ;)

This is the perfect handheld shotgun. *for me at least* They are legal in NZ *all muzzleloading firearms in NZ are considered "parts" and not actual weapons therefor they do not need a licence* And they are easy to use along with less recoil.
Kulax easy to use? maybe once..

It's perfect except it's $5000 in Missouri
Nathan M, Missouri USA? I think more like $800 to $900, not sure, but check. Pedersoli 20 ga. Howdah. Gunbroker or some online source should have one for sale.
Thanks for making the video! I have wanted a Howdah for a while now. My dad told me he used to hunt squirrels when he was a kid with a black powder double barrel. He said your have to duck under the cloud of smoke to aim the second shot. I have shot black powder rifles and pistols with him from an early age, and have collected a few replicas along the way. It's great fun. He's gone now.
Try an 1858 New Army 44. It is also fun to shoot, and accurate as well.
Michael - age 35. 😏
But where did he go?
I use premade cartridges by getting a mandrel (i.e piece of dowel rod) and roll some paper tubes up with one end folded flat and glued with a small dab of glue under the last fold. I then build the load from the front down using over shot wad, the the shot, cushion wad, the powder card, then powder and twist the end with a dab of glue or tied with string. I write the gauge and shot load on the side to keep everything straight. Out in the field or at the range I simply un twist a little, tear the twisted end off and pour in the powder, then simply place the rest of the cartridge in and ram it home, the extra paper left over acts as an extra cushion also and on my plain round ball loads only use a card under the ball and the paper acts as the wadding. I have made up several different cartridges using bird shot, buck, buck and ball loads, and plain round balls. .
I'm now having my kids watch your videos your constant gun safety helps educate beyond my gun safety rules for my children it reinforces the rules much appreciated nice work keep it up!!!

Hickok45 gets my vote for one of the coolest Grandad that ever lived. Can you imagine visiting him in the summertime when you're out of school. You have some cool stories to tell.
I acquired my great grand dad's double barrel rabbit rated shotgun it's 12 gauge. I don't think it was supposed to do this but I cocked both barrels and was intending to shoot the right side first . I was going to follow with the second shot right behind the first . Both barrels went off at the same time it didn't knock me down but my shoulder turned black . I was sort of glad when it didn't go off for you the first time I thought you was going to get more than you expected . You tried it again I thought o Lord . But your second shot did what my first shot was supposed to do. Needless to say that's the last time I cocked both barrels at once. I'll never forget that.

Artur Mędrek Go Poland! Way to stand upnfor your country and not give in to the evil EU! We applaud you!
I know I'm 3 years late, but youtube recommendations do that sometimes. But the "counterweight" that Hickok stated on the butt of the gun is actually a weapon. Back them when you had flintlock weapons, once your shot is used and you don't have time to reload, they grab the gun by the barrel and whack people with the metal pommel. You can see a wide variety of these pommel on a lot of old weapons, some with designs so when you hit someone, it would imprint the thing you are hitting, and others would be certain shapes.
First off, let me say I'm a huge fan of your channel. I enjoy your knowledgeable, calm, and unpretentious style. I've had one of these Howdahs for several years now. There's a lot of information out there, on this gun and black powder shooting in general, that seems to me confusing and conflicting. The video made it look fun and simple. I can't wait to get out and shoot it. Thanks for showing what components are needed. No more safe queen. Thank you very much!

I'll probably buy this in lieu of a bug-a-salt.
Both
no joke though, those salt guns are fun as hell. and surprisingly well made
Looks like a ton of fun; I want one. It's be great if they offered it in 16ga so that it would work with larger buckshot. A 20ga bore is only good up to about .30-caliber #1 buck.
I wonder though, how are the ballistics with black powder, old-school wadding, and that short barrel? Everyone seems to assume this is full-power 20ga, but I would be interested in seeing some chronograph results.
Although it is called a 20 gauge, it is close to 19 gauge. In fact, you are best to buy wads and cards of 19 gauge for this pistol. If you load a round-ball it will be .58 caliber (with normal thickness patch)
I like the hickok45 channel because he shoots first and then gives explanations ...fron Brasil

21:28 Reminds me of a buddy in high school. All he had was one big ball. He fathered 3 kids tho, so no harm done. I love that story! :-D
I shoot a flintlock fouling piece.
Powder, then over powder card (the nitro card). Then cushion wad, then thin overshot card (to keep shot from becoming embedded in the cushion wad). Then shot. Then, finally, an over shot card.
In place of the cushion wad. You can you flax tow. Cover it with an overshot card. You can also use tow instead of an overshot card over the shot.
As far as the powder and shot loads. I generally do a square load (equal volume of powder and shot). I’d probably use 2F instead of 3F. 1.125 oz of shot is about 80g 2F by volume. 70g is about an ounce of shot. A .610 ball with a patch of Hames T-Shirt material for the patch.
My .32 flintlock is a Pedersoli. Love them.
