    I feel like lots of people think that hobbies like reading, painting, or crafting are good things, but ONLY if you’re doing them at certain level. You only read one book? Read five more. Your paintings aren’t pretty or at an advanced level? What’s the point. People think that how much you enjoy the action isn’t as important as how impressive that action is to other people, and that prevents people from feeling proud of what they did. It’s ok to be bad at something. It’s ok to do something once without being perfect. It’s okay to do something for a while without improving. As long as you enjoy it, it was worth doing. You’re hobbies don’t have to be impressive/pretty/worth money to be good hobbies. Be mediocre. It’s ok.

      I like drawing and coloring, but I hate doing it as work, so I will doodle and color when I need a break, which is a perfect balance. I do not desire to be a professional or even good at drawing, I do it to enjoy myself and take a break from work. I never tell people about it or show my work because people then assume that I should be talented at it because I have been doing it for years….. like uh its my therapy, my relaxation time, my turn off my brain and color time.

    I work at a bookstore, and before my country's lockdown, people were in high-gear panic buying mode, so there were tons of people buying literal stacks of books, puzzles, colouring books, self-help books, etc etc. People buying 30 books at the time because they're so scared of being bored and unproductive. Like, you don't normally read for fun, so why do you think you're gonna read so many books in 3 weeks? You're allowed to be bored, you don't need to keep your mind active and you don't need to feel guilty about not doing anything. Don't force yourself to binge read books you don't even like; if you'd rather rewatch a show on Netflix, do that!!

      you don't know if those people are frequent readers or not though? someone who is just starting to read would not throw the money for a stack of book this big, believe me. Those were most likely people who love to binge read and they were just afraid of running out of books since libraries were closed. I did that lol. People who are only occasional readers would only buy a couple books, because it usually takes them AGES to finish up one book.

    • @coolbeans5911
      @coolbeans5911 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      @@caultfouu a lot of them definitely; but other's just looked so completely clueless, not even sure what genre they like to read. Also, the bookshop is located in an area where people have a lot of money, so spending a fortune on books on such short notice isn't weird or impossible for them.
      I'm not trying to judge people, of course. Some lady walked in and bought all the Cassandra Clare & Sarah J Maas books because she finishes a book in like half a day (which is some kind of X-men shit to me cuz i'm an exceptionally slow reader)

      @@poorainbowshit2570 Sure, but some people out there disguise their eating disorders as the ultimate key to whatever they're preaching. The gratification you get from following the rules concerning your eating habits is not real happiness. However, they're often advocating some sort of 'clean' eating, encouraging disordered eating to their audience, saying how much it has helped them be more energized, focused, healthy and all that stuff while still maintaining their weight or even losing some.
      As a person with an eating disorder it disgusts me how people with a large following advertize their eating disorder and influence their young audience to do the same 😬

    It’s triggering my husband with his health anxiety too. We’ve just been trying to live for today. We sat out on our back porch and watched birds eat from our bird feeder. We’ve painted. We’ve taken many walks, done many fun photo shoots. One day we sat down in a bed of clovers at sunset in silence. It was beautiful. We’ve had some really special moments in all this. A few months ago before this happened he read me a quote about us paying rent to spend most of our time in the office but now we’re having the time to value our home-the thing we spent thousands on for over 2 years. Home feels more like home. I feel closer to my husband, my inner child, the earth, and humanity.

      I have been having several intense panic attacks due to my anxiety about my future, life, family and the world hahaha. I took my laptop out, read a few sentences of my assignment question, typed one word, then shut it off and played my guitar.

    I often feel like, we have that idea that "being productive" has to be a chore and things we like doing cannot be productive.
    For example: last week my sister came to me and said, she is feeling like she had done nothing all day. I asked her, what she had done in the last few hours. She answered, that she spent the time crocheting a wrap top for herself for summer. I would definitely count that as productive but she did not, because it was fun and relaxing

    • @MrMarinus18
      @MrMarinus18 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I like to separate it in being productive vs being busy. Being productive means you are doing stuff that needs to be done and you are focused on doing those things to the best of your abilities. Being busy though means you are doing stuff for the sake of doing stuff.
      I think that's where you need to draw the line. Don't try finding work, let the work find you. Do it because it needs to be done.

    Theology grad student here: few things get me more excited than talking about Protestant work ethic, and generally how it has negatively effected American culture. It fuels into the mythos of the American Dream and how, if you work hard enough, you can achieve anything! And if you’re not achieving, then you’re not working hard enough. Even worse, lack of success through the lens of the American Dream is conflated with the Protestant work ethic: you’re not successful because you don’t work hard enough, AND God doesn’t love you. This conflation is why the religious right abhors socialism and welfare benefits; these values are associated with laziness and a lack of faith. No consideration is given to systemic issues like racism, incarceration, and gender that could cause societal “failure.” Failure is a personal decision.
    Then churches who peddle a prosperity gospel theology take advantage of people who are deemed unsuccessful by society and religion. These churches, like Joel Olsteen’s, are often very wealthy at the expense of their congregation. They usually have the message of “give more to this church, pray harder, and you’ll be successful!” The attendants of prosperity gospel churches are disproportionately poor and minorities. So many are being taken advantage of by a system and blamed by that system for being unsuccessful, and are taken advantage of and manipulated through religious vulnerabilities.
    This is what I’m writing my thesis on and I CANNOT shut up about it, so sorry :)

What's helping me now is knowing that even if I'm not being productive..........nobody else is either. There's no competition right now. We all just have to be blobs for a while. If you get one small or big thing done in a day, then it was a good day, and if you didn't make anything worse, then it's an okay day. There are many okay days ahead for all of us. :)

It could even just be getting all your chores at home done. Whatever it is, the point is that you're getting results. At my desk in my dorm I could study or read a textbook for hours, yet at home I can only concentrate for like 30 minutes at a time, which is super frustrating because I still have so much work to do.

    I've moved away from daily to-do-lists because I never keep to them and then I feel bad. Instead I've been working on just being more present in my life, taking schort breaks throughout the day where I stop, connect with my surroundings and actively think about what I still need or want to do that day.
    The sudden loss of routine and structure has been a bit hard for me. I still get up every morning at the same time I would usually get up for work and I've structured my day so that I know what will come next and I won't feel lost. But I don't know how well that will work in the long run (as it's gonna get harder to find things to do).

When I was on campus things were scheduled for me and I had regular consistently scheduled breaks and I didn’t realize how much I needed those time limits until all this happened. I am so unmotivated to do my work because I have so much time so I just put it off. I've also seen that other workers almost get angry with you if you don't seem productive enough for them. I told my classmate that during midterms week I sat down and played Mario kart and she was like...judging me? This video is everything. With the help of my therapist, I've come to grips with the fact that I am indeed addicted to working. I feel physically uncomfortable when I can't - like I don't fit into my own skin. I feel guilty, restless, and anxious. Realizing that a person can be truly addicted to work was an amazing thing. So often workaholics are praised for their tenacity and drive when what it's really doing is tearing down our boundaries, affecting mental health, and preventing us from creating meaningful relationships. So I'm completing a mandatory quarantine period as I just got over the virus and I've been really forced to contemplate that addiction in detail. Super interesting.

    I’m interested to see to societal effects of this quarantine . I’m one of those burnout “gifted” students you’ve discussed in the past. I have always guilted myself for not doing enough, for not contributing enough, for not accomplishing something “big”, and in any job I have I push myself hard even if I hate it or if my hard work earns nothing for myself. This quarantine has forced me to slow down and finally truly relax for the first time in my life. I’m cooking way more, I’m gardening, I’m getting into video games, I’m journaling, and learning way more about myself. I think I’ve only felt bad because of society’s expectations. Ive never considered the possibility of being a homemaker or stay at home mom as a future for me, but honestly this makes me think I would be happier doing that. I wonder if anyone else will have similar feelings to me, and if working less or not working at all will become more common.

  • @eliza9813
    @eliza9813 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    honestly, I don’t really think our need to be productive ties to capitalism, at least not mainly. when you aren’t productive you just feel useless. because you feel you aren’t bringing anything to the table. I think it roots deeper than capitalism, it’s our need to feel like we matter in some way. sitting down for a an hour or taking a nap, might makes us feel like we are wasting time and being lazy when we could be taking a walk or doing dishes. we might even be thinking that others are judging us, for being lazy and unhelpful? no hate you make some good points, I just thought it cii point you be something else.

    • @redmoonvisual
      @redmoonvisual 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I agree with your point, for sure. That being said, I would argue that capitalism has generated an environment where it’s become increasingly difficult to feel like we matter.
      Evolution has had NO time to catch up on what’s going on. So all us out here, are still running on software made to handle tribes of like max 100 people, where people would actually know one another, and where the impact of your actions could be directly felt.
      We are all complex, unique individuals with our own talents, quirks and dreams. When all of a sudden you have 8 billion people involved in making world society together, one person doesn’t matter so much. I truly want the best for everyone in this world, but I literally do not have the capacity to get to personally know, and give a deeply invested fuck into every single human being I meet. None of us do. And feeing like anything we do won’t make a difference? It’s a recipe for widespread apathy if you ask me.
      The “successful” people in this world though. They get put on a pedestal. They are seen, they are taken care of, they are respected, they are valued , they are making a difference, etc etc. And these are all things that we want on a primal level. They MATTER. And we all want to feel like we truly matter, as the complex beautiful individuals that we are.
      In this capitalist environment, we’re fed the idea that you’ll only matter if you’re successful. And in order to be “successful”, you have to be productive. We’re fed the idea we somehow matter more when we’re being productive.
      So yeah, this does go way deeper than just capitalism. But the environment created by capitalism has created an environment that makes it really difficult for us to fulfill those self esteem/social needs in a meaningful way.

    My girlfriend sent me this video after I almost had a stroke due to work stress.
    I am a Game Programmer and during this quarantine I have been working 6 days a week 10h a day.
    This is not because my bosses tell me to, I simply cannot enjoy pretty much anything if I know there is a bug in my code
    or the designers are having trouble using my tools. I can't relax until something can be considered absolutely "done".
    This video has helped me relax a bit because of the fear of getting fired part (wich is VERY real).
    Would be cool to see something about how to deal with the pain of thinking you are not doing good work for a client, I'm sure artists must deal with this a lot.
    Its probably normal for clients to bash your work until it is exactly how they want, and then just proceed to give you the next task without any praise.
    But it has been soulcrushing for me.
    If somebody knows of something that will help, please let me know.

    • @marlen3735
      @marlen3735 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Hi, I'm very sorry to hear that. To come straight to the point: you say that you are afraid of not producing a good-enough outcome because you feel like not being good enough, right? Also, it seems like you experience very high stress.
      So, something you could do is build your feeling of self-worth and have an exercise to decrease stress.
      To build self-worth, there are multiple options (Google is your friend^^). For example, every day you could write down 3 things that you did well on that very day. It doesn't matter if it seems like a small thing from the outside, what matter is that it made you feel proud. Let's say you managed to have a 10min break of work in which you managed to not think about work. Congrats, Nr.1 is found! :D Another thing is that you listened to your girlfriend and are now seeking out help. That is also something remarkable and shouldn't be downplayed.
      Regarding stress, there are also multiple options. One could be progressive muscle relaxation (there are guided videos on youtube). This helps you to bring you body from a high-stress to a low stress state. If you look into sth called "broaden and build theory", you will notice that being relaxed actually makes you more productive and creative. Therefore, it might be very beneficial for your situation.
      On last note: in any case there is something bothering you and hindering you in your daily life, you can always seek out counselling or therapy. I'm from Europe, so this is free of charge for me, but unfortunately I do not know how it is in the US or elsewhere.
      Good luck, stay safe, and please let me know if it helped you and if not, what you'd like to hear instead^^

Could be tiny like doing something you enjoy for a bit. I like to just unwind a bit with my favorite TH-camr. Get some coffee. Get to good stopping points in your code and if you have lingering thoughts, write them as comments or in a notepad so you can come back with less of "what was I doing again". Feel free to reach out. I was actually totally in a rut, not feeling productive at the office for a while. Working from home instead in the last month has totally helped me find productivity again! And enjoying working together with my bf, we are both software engineers at different workplaces!

    I was talking with my friend about this last week. I’ve been doing massage for 7 years and have lived on my own for 10, and have worked my ass off (not trying to brag just putting into perspective). In that time, I’ve paid off my student loans, saved money and recently got a car again (for the first time in 10 years). I don’t live paycheck to paycheck but I’m a very frugal person and prefer to live below my means. I have some money in savings but it’s more so to sit there as a comfort, not for use. I applied for unemployment for the first time this morning and am feeling overall really good about life. We all need a collective break and I really hope this time resonates positively for other as well and will be something we don’t just carry into the future but value.

    This came to me at the perfect time. I'm extremely overwhelmed w online education and this kinnndda helps me feel less quilty about relxing. I'd literally rewatch all ur videos just to support u (and also bc they're entertaining as hell) but I have no time for that:( thank you, this was very well put together

    High school student here - it’s really strange, but also interesting, to see how schools and teachers are responding to this. Some of my teachers are pushing for us to relax and assigning us minimal work, while others are interpreting this as the potential *end* of our education and giving us double the work. These past two weeks, I haven’t been able to do a single “”productive”” thing because of school. I wish school administrations would realize that they don’t need to constantly be assigning us work as a way to keep us occupied.
    Another thing that’s bothering me just a bit is college. I feel terrible for HS class of 2020 who might not be able to truly say goodbye to high school-maybe they won’t be able to even have a full graduation ceremony. I, as a Junior, am concerned about how the realm of college apps will change with this. Will schools go test optional? Are APs going to be taken less seriously since the exam is now different? Will apps be less or more competitive?
    I could care less about the current quarantine. What I do care about is how this might impact my future and everything I’ve been working for throughout HS.
    Just took the opportunity to get that off my chest. Hope everyone is doing well 💕

      I've heard that parents complaining about children not having homework lead administrations to push teachers to put out work, which puts 2x the stress of teacher AND students. Its not far to anyone. Keep your head up bub, you'll make it! 💖💖💖

      I have 6 subject right now, as opposed to the usual 8, and let em just say, the work won’t stop. Every teacher has taken the greatest pleasure of giving us a lot of essays. Now as an overly analytical person these take me forever. I have to make sure it flows well, matched my teachers intellect (not all can handle a nice basic essay, yay idiot teachers), and sounds nice to me. I’m a freshie btw

      i’m actually thinking about the same things!! online classes are really draining right now, they are longer than regular ones and on top of that we get tons of homework. and since you now finish classes later than you normally would and then start doing homework, it turns out your whole day is consumed by school.
      btw i’m a senior in hs sooo yeah.. i’m from europe though and we are supposed to finish school at the end of june so there’s still some hope that we’ll at least have graduation. but the possibility of never really having a class again/hanging out with my pals from school makes me so sad somehow, even though i didn’t like school much. also everybody’s pressuring us to use tHiS tiMe to prepare for our finals better (they r the ones that determine whether you’ll get into uni/college) but i can’t really because i’m too anxious and thinking whether i’ll fail them now that i’m losing at least 2 months of school. all in all things are just super weird... sorry for such a long reply!! it’s just that your comment really speaks to me
      hope we’ll all make it💖💛
