Oddie I’m so glad you’ve covered this topic in your own inimitable style. I wouldn’t want to hear anyone else tell this story. Dear God what a time it must have been. I’ve seen The Devils, with the magnificent powerhouse Oliver Reed, it had a profound impact on me. Grandier’s end haunts me, and omg did Oliver Reed act the pants off that role. Those women had such little choice, so few options, and any mental health issues would understandably have flourished in such a rigid, obsessive environment. I appreciated especially your measured telling of the nuns’ story, bringing it to vivid life in a way that felt as very real as it was. This is one story that doesn’t need embellishment to make it truly horrendous and quite insane. Thank you Oddie! Much love to you and Odette❤️
@@ObsoleteOddity you’re very welcome, I loved what you said after the video had finished too. A religious life can be incredibly fulfilling but you certainly need to want to live that way. I’ve been reading about the nuns who offered themselves as anchorites, being locked away in a room without human contact, only receiving food through a slot in the wall, praying and dispensing advice through a covered window in the wall. That’s a devotion to one’s beliefs that astounds me. Being someone who can talk the leg off a chair, I know I’d fail miserably. On the whole, the history of religious orders is fascinating and complex. I think about the nuns in this story a lot, there’s such a desperation to their actions and the reasons behind their hysteria. It’s all so tragic. Thank you Oddie❤️
@DeidreL9 yes, being forced into such a life is a whole lot different than choosing it willingly - especially if the latter can opt out at any stage. A late friend of mine entered the monastic order decades ago, but realised after a year that it wasn’t right for him. Back in those days, I think many of these nuns and monks had little choice, it was either that or poverty. Thank you for your lovely feedback, my friend 😊

Oddie Beau you've done it again! Outstanding, terrifying, sad and horrible...and all of that because he was too handsome! Poor Grandier! Many of those women were victims as well, and on so many levels! Jeanne des Anges was anything but of the angels, her regret was too little too late. Ah the Inquisition, a grand excuse for the old Catholic church to maim, torture, persecute and murder at will. Thank you for telling it as only you can!
That was haunting and brilliant. I watched the film and read the book. This was right up there, with the best on this subject. I tip my hat to you, sir...

Actually, two years, since this was uploaded to Patreon, all the videos are two years old before they reach TH-cam. Thank you so much for the lovely compliment Amy, much love to you.
Another masterpiece! When i was a litle girl, i started school in what was a convent in Quito, Ecuador. The convent itself was part of the oldest cathedral in the city. I remembet thinking that it was close e to heaven Not only because of the beauty I saw but to this day, I can remember that sense of serenity snd peace thst i felt walking through there. The nuns all wore habits like the one that Sally Fields wore on the Flying nun on tv and to me they looked like some of Gods angels. All I wanted to do at that time and as a good little Catholic girl was to someday also be a nun.
Compelling story. This was unbelievably horrific. These ladies were very impressionable. You did this story justice in an amazing way for me. What was your career, before you did TH-cam?
Thank you oddie, the video was as usual of excellent quality and the story was both intriguing and very sad, an extremely horrific death....what awful times to live in if accused of consorting with the devil.
Thank you my friend, very glad you enjoyed it! Yes, it was very easy in those times to be accused of being a witch or a warlock, it could happen to rich and poor.
What a great story in the way you told it 👏👏! That's really a great contribution! It shows that you love what you are doing. Glad I found your Channel 🙏.
This was, by far, the most horrific story and very strange and frightening as well. Good job in the telling of a tale by its very nature, had to be very upsetting to you 😢.
a part of this touch my soul as 15 years old my husband told me he didn’t know if he wanted to stay or go to his lover as the baby came out me in pieces that day. At this early age I lost me and my baby and lost the soul of my life.. as a old woman looking back.. it was a time in life that a story of its own..
Though I saw Ken Russel’s film “The Devils” in my early twenties back in the mid-nineties and enjoyed it…and despite being a man in the Deep South of the U.S. and being very interested in anything regarding Renaissance history….. I was quite unaware that this was a real event. I’m so glad this randomly showed up in my recommendations. I enjoyed it immensely! Thank you, sir!
That's a tragic yet amazing account. I enjoy doing research, and I'm always impressed by the research you put into these videos. I agree that priest was a cad but certainly didn't deserve his fate. And I feel even worse for those nuns. It's interesting how his enemies met terrible fates. Was it guilt? I do wonder.
Couldn't imagine living in a time when someone of power could just say witch and that's it your done. You did a great job of this video. I've heard this story before, but not as detailed
Talk about austere, my coworker is a former nun who took a vow of poverty. The condition of the convent in which she lived was so bad, it should have been condemned. Pleas for repairs went unheard. Then her mother died and left her six million dollars. Rather than turn the funds over as expected, she left the order, had the convent razed and replaced it with a new, modest one. She is still a devout Catholic. She no longer hands over money to the church. When she sees neglect, she remedies it. Whenever I hear stories about nuns in a convent, I think about that. Thank you for the story!
What an amazing story told by an amazing narrator. Your work never fails to amaze me. Keep up the great work. Have you thought about going into theater and acting. What you bring now is incredible work that I find very intriguing. Thank you for sharing these stories with us!

God Bless to you, Odette and your furry friends. You are loved!
I can attest! “Oddie” is a most responsive & generously courteous Host! 💐🌼🌹💐 Now, about those nuns; I don’t recall hearing anything that sounded as if Jeanne des Ange repented, atoned, made any recompense to Grandier’s family, friends, nor to the other nuns under her priory superiority & influence. But I am willing to review the ending, just to be honestly certain. To be even-handed, it sounds as if she never questioned the motives, the designs, nor even certain individual directives given to her by the “priesthood.” Following blindly & ultimately, submissively (for such a forceful person) into carrying-out whatever deceptions she herself performed, fully-aware & intent on inducing other women of the vocation to follow her lead. But given the era, she was in no real position to resist, short of resignation-or worse for herself. It does seem that The Inquisition age was simply rife to the point of mass-insanity with needless “religiously-conducted” bloodshed. Just like in this case, anyone rational would wonder-even in that period-WHY the result most sought-after was death, in such an atrocious number of matters?? Especially, when a simple transfer, removal, or replacement would’ve just as well served!! People’s hatred of people can really set them beside themselves, obviously. “Out of all compass,” as the British expression goes, I think. The real “miraculous” wonder emerging from the story is that the clergy somehow acted as if they were convinced that they were carrying-out an actual religion, letting the apparent “convictions” expressed by some others overrule every single qualm of decency. All with nobody intervening who was ever powerful enough to even remind them of the differences between “religion” per se, and acts of warfare that were tantamount to utter depravity-torture before homicide. Mutilations. Violent assaults. AFTER pronouncing the individuals “afflicted” themselves!! In this case, knowing themselves & each other to have been idly indulging in vanity, jealousy, envy, & only Heaven knows the rest. Psychopathy, masked as Religion, then carried out in play-acting, even after everyone most directly involved is deceased. They really should’ve all just gotten married, or just opened a brothel, & changed the rules, made up some better-suited ones they could actually handle. Who was it they were trying to convince? Loudun? The king? The children??
I have not listened to you oddie for a while since my last tablet bit the dust. You are as amazing as ever, l will be sure to never let that happen again, l am just off to rectify my omissions. It's great to have your you tube posts back in my life again 🎉😂😊

Thank you so much for your lovely feedback, very glad you enjoy my morbid presentations!
A kindred spirit indeed 😊
Thank you for noticing and taking the time to respond to my comment. I made a post on Facebook out of sheer excitement😊
Thanks for your really great feedback Deidre, a truly wonderful compliment - much appreciated :)
Bravo! Another excellent video! Your research is remarkable! Thanks so much Oddie!
I appreciate that, thank you so much!
What an obscure and fascinating story. I don't seem to get notifications so this was a pleasent surprise. Such a treat on a dark autumn evening. Your content matches no other. Where do you find such gems?
I really appreciate your positive feedback - thank you very much :)
Great commentary. ❤❤❤
I really appreciate the 'super thanks' donation - thank you kindly 😊
Thanks for the hard work, Oddie! You've truly enhanced my life over the past years.
That’s very kind of you my friend, thank you so much for the lovely feedback 😊
Another cracking piece of content man. Always look forward to when u create new content the well detailed & thorough process u create when narrating these stories. It's always incredibly fascinating & interesting hearing these stories. Keep up the amazing work Oddie. Story telling at it's finest
Very glad you enjoyed it my friend, and thank you so much for the fantastic feedback!

@chrissilvester5663 much appreciated Chris, that’s very kind of you 🙏😊
I love this chanbel and i had no idea he was back, after having to shut down, but my notifications were on i seen the and im absolutely soooooooooo freaking chuffed. Never miss a episode again....❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This is by far the best you have presented us with yet 😁👏. I was gripped from start to finish, and you left me wanting to delve deeper into the lives of these nuns, and look for Ollie's film ❤. Thank you Oddie x
I’m very pleased to hear that Clara, thank you so much for your lovely feedback! 🙏😊
Thanks for your kind words my friend, that's so nice of you.
I always enjoy your presentations. This one was another gem.
A wonderful dive into a tragic tale. Stupendous narration and a very compelling story.
I really appreciate that, thank you.
@@ObsoleteOddity anytime friend
That was haunting and brilliant. I watched the film and read the book. This was right up there, with the best on this subject. I tip my hat to you, sir...
That is very kind of you and it really makes my day, that my efforts are so appreciated - I thank you sincerely.
I love listening and watching your stories. They capture my attention and I can’t wait for the next one. So informative and interesting. I love historical stories and you bring a different perspective and dimension to some I know. Thank you.
Glad it was to your liking, thank you so much for your positive feedback!
Thanks for the upload Oddie! 🤘🏻❤
My pleasure!
Thank You Oddie . Being an old lady I am familiar with this this slice of history . Mass hysteria is still a thing ! And RIP to the lovely Oliver Reed , one of my favourite actors❤ He played the part very well .
I thought you might be my friend, yes, mass hysteria is still very much alive and well.
I also always liked Oliver Reed, extremely good actor, with such a delightful sense of humour.
@@ObsoleteOddity Gosh I fell in love with him back in about the seventies ! I was just a teenager 🤔 Brilliant actor but unfortunately had some serious issues 😶 Thanks for including some of his scenes 👍❤️
Horrific and fascinating. I must seek out and watch The Devils, the controversial film based on these events.
Thank you for your riveting presentation, Oddie!
The Devils is a great film, I love it! I think it is a masterpiece, directed by Ken Russell. It's sick❤😍🥰!
Thank you! 😊 Glad you enjoyed the presentation my friend!
Absolutely brilliant. Your voice is amazing. So captivating. So mesmerising. Thank you for the stories
Thank you so much!
Look forward to each and every video from you and your sweetheart. Lots of thanks to you both. Hope yall are having a beautiful holiday season.
I appreciate your positive feedback my friend, thank you so much 😊
I remember this one! Has it really been a year since I first saw it on Patreon? Definitely among the more disturbing stories out there, yet beautifully told and presented, as always!
Thank you for your great feedback!
Thank you also for sharing your emotional response while being in the convent.
Lovely.
Compelling story. This was unbelievably horrific. These ladies were very impressionable. You did this story justice in an amazing way for me. What was your career, before you did TH-cam?
Thank you so much, very glad you enjoyed it!
ODDIE ! That was so scary - but I thoroughly enjoyed it ❤
Happy it was to your liking Dill!
We all love a good scare 💀👻
@@ObsoleteOddity we certainly do Oddie , thank you ❤️
That was horrific and so terribly sad. He really had some terrible enemies, to think these were people of the church. Thank you Odie
To Oddie, another fantastic story, looking forward to the next episode.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you 😊
Oddie is the best story teller I have ever heard here is another masterpiece thanks again Oddie
That's very kind of you, thank you for that.
Thank you, Oddie. What a story! And well told.

What a great story in the way you told it 👏👏! That's really a great contribution! It shows that you love what you are doing. Glad I found your Channel 🙏.
That’s very kind of you, thank you so much for your positive feedback!
This was, by far, the most horrific story and very strange and frightening as well. Good job in the telling of a tale by its very nature, had to be very upsetting to you 😢.
Thank you very much!
There's no exceptions, no matter the length of your videos they are well worth every second. And may I add educational.
Much appreciated, thank you kindly!
a part of this touch my soul as 15 years old my husband told me he didn’t know if he wanted to stay or go to his lover as the baby came out me in pieces that day. At this early age I lost me and my baby and lost the soul of my life.. as a old woman looking back.. it was a time in life that a story of its own..
So sorry, Ruth.
May your life now be full, gentle and meaningful.❤
@@Shellorena it is full of a life who history took too much but I made it
Bravo! Ken Russell did an amazing film of that story. You filled in all the cracks. Thank You ! 😀

This was so captivating! What a horrific time in history.
What a fascinating story Oddie!

I love every video you make been tuned in for years always great content
I appreciate that!
Loving the intersperced clips from Ken Russel's "the Devils"
Another great video Oddie 👍 I hope you are well.
Thanks, you too!
Thank you so much for your positive feedback,
So glad you’re enjoying my content. 😊
Thank you for another interesting story.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I appreciate your positive feedback my friend, thank you so much 😊
Couldn't imagine living in a time when someone of power could just say witch and that's it your done. You did a great job of this video. I've heard this story before, but not as detailed
I appreciate your positive feedback!
I enjoy these readings and appreciate him telling these stories!!!!!
I appreciate your positive feedback!
As always a good story thanks for bringing it to us, I enjoy your narrations the animation and great vintage photos, as well.
I appreciate that Cherri, thank you so much for your positive feedback!
Thank you for your story as well, how delightful!
@@ObsoleteOddity When you get to be my age, nearly everything reminds you of a story! 😆

I really appreciate your videos I have been watching for year's I don't know how much your patreon is so I only get to see what videos you put on TH-cam but I still really appreciate them your voice just makes the story come alive if you could let me know how much your patron cost per month I will consider it into my budget
Thanks for that!
Beautiful visuals! Creepy gore, well done! Another Obsolete Oddities masterpiece! Thank you! I think I shall watch this one again, because it's late this night, and I have put down my drink. My cats gather round, and so I will say good night. You are the master of the macabre, and your stories are not to be missed. I fell into a deep dark cloud of the night as I close my eyes. What dreams will I weave? Only you, Sir Oddie knows...Sweet dreams to all for now, I will say good night:)) Til the morrow, when we meet again. Thank you very much for this story. God Bless to you, Odette and your furry friends. You are loved!

I can attest! “Oddie” is a most responsive & generously courteous Host! 💐🌼🌹💐
Now, about those nuns; I don’t recall hearing anything that sounded as if Jeanne des Ange repented, atoned, made any recompense to Grandier’s family, friends, nor to the other nuns under her priory superiority & influence.
That's very kind of you, thank you for that.
I totally agree with your views!
