Penis disappearance magic (or the fear of it) is still a common presence in the modern day. I have a friend from Senegal who told me about how in his school years he was told never to shake hands with a stranger because they might make your penis disappear. One day some random guy greeted him in a really familiar way and he just shook his hand without thinking but then he remembered and realised he didn't know the guy. He said he was paranoid for weeks and kept checking himself daily.

i think it would be really cool to see you go over the silent scandinavian movie "Haxan" from the 1920s (it has been translated) it claims itself to be what amounts to a documentary on witchcraft of that time and older.

Witchunts peaked in the 1600s which was also when we had the very worst religious wars like the 30 years war going on. In fact the two are linked externally authorities were getting ready for war against the heretics and internally they were cracking down on anything vaguely at odds with community standards. Its a common thing. External fears of whatever often lead to moral panics and repression internally. The threat isn't entirely made up from the pov of the 'system'. In times of war the system wants to make sure the community is united around its values. Anyone outside of it is a problem regardless of whether they did something genuinely harmful.

I can't get over how much Dr. Sledge looks like a younger and more bearded Craig Benzine.
Think that's what made me warm to this channel so quickly, in addition to the excellent content.

At least that earliest known depiction of that witch riding a broom shows her riding it side-saddle as would befit a lady of that era, so good on them for not demeaning her by suggesting she rode the broom straddled.

By my mystical art and hidden knowledge, I have divined that there exists a means most arcane to summon forth the Six Volumes of Brill from the vast aether of the nether realms of the internet. Yea, with the proper conjurations and invocations, the ethereal tomes, safeguarded by scholarly wardens and bound in sacred sigils, may manifest within one's grasp.

33:05 Dunno about Star Wars, but book 6 of the Expanse series, Babylon's Ashes, features a light frigate called the Witch of Endor. :D I always wondered what it referred to! All the ship names seem to be very carefully thought-of references in the series.

Excellent content Dr Sledge (as usual). I also appreciate that you offer links to further reading on the subject. I find the Inquisition and witch trials fascinating, yet I haven’t been able to read very much in the Maleficarum though I’ve had a paperback copy on the shelf for well over 20 years. I’m not normally a ‘softie’, but whenever I attempt to read Maleficarum, I get physically ill. It literally makes me throw up. However, I may try to find an affordable copy of Del Rio anyway. 😊

I always believed that the people who were killed by the church were anyone who had something that the church wanted but could only get by saying they were witches or something of the sort and then they were free to take their lands or whatever it was they wanted in first place. Death brings out the worst in people, greed!

Supposedly Page, Plant and Bonham participated in a ritual to get famous. None of them would ever talk about it tho. The only one who didn't do it was JPJ. Page did go on to sell the Crowley house though because apparently a bunch of weird shit happened and he felt like it was cursed or something. Which is funny because that's the whole reason why he bought it in the first place but, hey. Love love love Zeppelin 💚 their relationship with the occult is super interesting. Many of their songs have references to it
