    My grandfather told me there was nothing wrong with her, she was very out going and wanted to live life. They locked her up to control her but she keep getting out so they sent her away, after that she was still too independent, so they lobotomize her. So she could not ruin the family Reputation. I believe my Grandfather.

      I, too, would have to agree with your grandfather. The lobotomy, as anyone nowadays knows and if those who knew Rosemary had the chance to interact with her after the procedure, they too would have been able to see the disastrous effects it causes. So, despite Joseph not really knowing or understanding the probable outcome of the procedure, one he approved and coerced Rosemary to go ahead with the lobotomy which ruined his daughter and had stole the spark of life from behind her eyes, his choices thereafter are what, to me, speak the most loudly as to his character. Once he realized the life his daughter was fated endure, and at his own hands, whether he did so partially out of guilt or not - he most certainly did so out of his fear the embarrassment he felt she'd bring to him - the fact that he hid her away, even going as far as keeping her location a secret from her immediate family, such as her mother and siblings, in my opinion, that tells me all I need to know about Joseph Kennedy and the selfish, monster in human form that he was. If he could ruin his daughter as he did while trying to 'fix' her and then upon realizing the means which he chose to go about 'fixing' her didn't result in a manner which he found acceptable, he turned a blind eye at her entire existence. To the point that he had his secretary 'clean up his mess' by, in effect, sweeping her under the rug with the hope that people would forget she ever existed. So, yeah, there's no doubt in my mind that if he could do that to that beautiful little girl turned lovely, elegant young lady, he could certainly torture her under the guise of medical necessity with the hope of forcing her to eventually submit and conform. So sad, really.

    Rosemary Kennedy’s story was particularly horrific. As if it was not bad enough that her disability was totally avoidable, she was lobotomized because her behaviour was not only inconvenient but a blemish on the family image. And finally she was denied any family comfort because no one in the family other than the father knew where she was. The family had the resources to allow her to stay at home under full time care but their image was too important. As a whole, the family didn’t try hard enough but the father was despicable.

      Delaying birth by squeezing legs together as if (excuse my crassness) 'prarie-dogging' a "#2" so the family's obstetrician could be there in time leading to the poor newborn suffering irreparable harm is both ignorant and depraved. Granted, there are modern meds available for medical professionals these days - from mid-wives to EMTs and doctors, but even in many cultures there are means to do so centuries back. It's barbaric.

    For Rosemary, a life definitely stolen. I think for her father to make such a drastic decision and be so secretive about it, going as far as keeping it from his own wife tells me there may have been something more that he was hiding. She didn't look that mentally disturbed to me. She may have went through a rebellious patch but I don't think a lobotomy was the answer. Her father made a permanent decision that ultimately changed her life for the rest of her days, that was very selfish of him. Then hid her from the rest of the family, so sad. He was never even held accountable by anyone for his mistake. Mrs. Fonda and Mrs. Fitzgerald is a different kinda tragedy but also sad. And as always I enjoyed the video, thank you 😊.

      Sadly, so true.
      But still, I think his last year's weren't all that pleasent. We can only wonder if he was ever sorry for what he'd done to his daughter.
      He lost many of his children.
      His 1st son & a daughter Katherine to planes, Rosemary, his son that he pushed to become president after ther 1st son died, John was shot & killed.
      I don't remember if he was alive when Bobby was shot & killed or if he was alive during the car/girl being left to drowned by drunk Teddy Kennedy thing happened.
      So four of the kids died, two to planes, two to being shot, Rosemary after that awful brain operation & dumping her like trash -- that's five of his kids gone I think while he was still alive. I could be wrong.
      JFK's son & crew died in a plane crash. I think the plane was tampered with to do so -- so JFK Jr couldn't run for president. Notice he died shortly AFTER Jackie his mother died.
      Maybe the whole family is deceased now. But we can't change the past.
      I like to believe that Rosemary is in a much better place, no more pain & whole again.
      Who in their right mind would try to stop a baby from coming is beyond me. 'Mom & dad' had a big hand in poor Rosemary's hard life. To think that even WITH that beyond awful operation that Rosemary STILL KNEW HER MOM -- and probably wondered why she hadn't been there for her. Very, very, very sad indeed, but hopefully she's with God and happy now. Hopefully all that suffered in those awful places are in a better place.

      To give you some background, the Kings and Queens of Europe were actually puppets for the Christian Church. Their nurses had more power than they did, because they were appointed by the Church and had hands-on access to these monarchs with plenty of oops latitude. Sometimes these nurses just savagely demonstrated their absolute power and at least one infant King's son died in a sportive baby-tossing incident. This nurse probably treated the Kennedys much the same way for whatever reason.

    Thank you for this video! I would love to see you do a video on the life of Zelda Fitzgerald. I would say she definitely lived an interesting, but tragic life. She was a Southern debutant who got to hob-knob with some of the top names of the era, yet had to deal with her husband’s abuse and alcoholism. What is worse, he plagiarized a good deal of her private writings for his books. He was a driving factor in her mental illness, and her death was horrendous and shocking. He did get ideas from her diaries. Also when she gave birth to Scottie she said "I hope she's a fool" or something like that. He used that in the Great Gatsby. She said a lot of witty quips that he used. ALL writers pull from people they know. That's not plagiarism. I believe? The fact that her parents were ashamed by her and so hid her from the public is awful! She must’ve been so lonely and confused as to why her siblings never visited her....
    She truly was a beauty. I often wonder what her life would’ve been like had she not had the operation.....
    I knew of her story (I identify with her as I was similar as a teenager....moody and wild) but I didn’t know of her sexual abuse! It is sickening to think of all the people who suffer with mental illness or disability that are victims of abuse!

    Whenever I have run across an article about Rosemary, I automatically think, “Poor dear.” Such a sad story. And , yes, when you see photos of her, with that beautiful smile she seems so vivacious, that it’s hard to think of her as mentally handicapped (until the later years, when her face definitely shows signs of a difficult life). Hers is such a tragic story.

    • @ieattofu68

      The later years where she looked so broken was the result of having that lobotomy. That doctor cut into her brain and had no idea what he was doing and Joseph allowed it.

    This one was so intriguing, yet so sad and depressing at the same time. I had heard of the tragic story of Rosemary Kennedy, but not to this extent. Imagine being in childbirth, yet holding back to wait for the doctor! How could they not know this would harm a baby?

    Every time I come across a photo of Rosemary Kennedy, I can't get over how beautiful she was. She looks exactly like you described her; pretty, sweet, social & had many suitors. It's really heartbreaking and infuriating how a prominent family (basically her father) was more concerned about their image than his daughter. You would think Rosemary's family would push the father to tell them exactly where she was, but apparently, no one really cared enough about her. I wouldn't be surprised if that was their cover story, and at the very least the mom knew where she was.

Some of her artwork is part of the permanent collection at the Asheville Art Museum & every year, the week of March 10 (the anniversary of her death in the fire) is declared Zelda Fitzgerald Week & all around town events (like lectures, art shows & concerts) are held inspired by her life, her art, her writings & her effect on Scott's writings & on the Jazz Age.

    This was an excellent look at an approach to mental health care. In the case of Rosemary Kennedy, being born “imperfect” to what amounted to American Royalty back then was an embarrassment to be hidden.
    She might have suffered bipolar disorder, which could account for the outbursts and mood swings. Once a botched lobotomy was performed, there was no going back, and she was a casualty of her Father’s ambition.
    I think the original concept of helping people through conversation, physical activity, and fine dining was a good one for many conditions, and batter than most places offered. Love the drunken Oddie artwork. Thank you for this sad but interesting look at a historical site. Much love.🖤🇨🇦

      @@joyful_tanya Hello, Tanya! From 1950 until the early 1970's "twilight sleep" was used in the US and other countries during birth. I was born in 1954 in Texas. My mom told me about it when I was around 5. She remembers:
      * labor pains
      * being wheeled into the brightly lit hospital operating room
      * getting the substance injected into her
      * pooping
      * apologizing for pooping
      * hearing "That's OK, honey, we'll clean you up."
      * nothing
      * some screaming baby (ME!) being put up to her face
      * hearing "Congratulations! It's a girl."
      * being wheeled back to her room.
      * Dads were in a waiting room and their first view was from behind the glass of the nursery. The babies were in their bassinets ID'ed with their last name and the gender. My dad was "let" into her room later on.
      So, she wasn't completely knocked out. Because it was just the way things were done back then, she doesn't feel she missed anything. She can't connect anything "bad" that happened to her in later life to the birth.
      There's a LOT of people running around now who were born using this method. Lots of Baby Boomers including yours truly and we seem to be sort of OK. 😊
      Twilight sleep had been replaced by epidurals by the time my age group were having their babies (early 70's to mid 80's).

    Hi Oddity, I just want to say that this is one of my favorite videos from you so far! I love that you included different stories in relation to the hospital. It adds more significance to the hospital. Though I do feel sad for those who didn't make it out of the hospital alive. While I am glad that more people are opening up the conversation on "mental disorders," I feel that in general, there are ways to go, especially here in the United States, where people are often overworked and the type of care that you would receive depends on how much money you have in your pockets rather than on the content of your character.
    The South I would say is the worst when it comes to mental health because physiatrists in general don't like the idea of having to treat both children and adults as equals, within reason, obviously. I remember trying to go to Southern therapists for help in the past and most either lied about wanting to get my parents to help me understand how their fear tactics and anxiety of me not making it in the world as a hardworking, responsible artist have hurt me during my young adult years or don't like that I felt that in order for the world to be a better place, then within reason, we as humans should all treat each other as if we are each other's keepers as churches would often advocate. Pretty ironic that I received such criticism since Christianity is dominant in the South, huh? Not to mention that most of my previous therapists practiced Christianity so yeah, the logic is broken.
    I don't want to go off on too much of a tangent so to close what I need to say, I just want to say thanks again for another awesome video and I hope to see more like this! I also would like to hear from the person who bravely volunteered to help you create this story and do the research on the hospital. Oh, and I do love your version of "Mr. Sandman." It's very beautiful and haunting. :)

    Fascinating. I live in NYS and have never heard of Craig House. They don't really tell this story about Rosemary Kennedy in the States, and especially about Rose and the birth. Thanks so much, Oddie.

    As always an absolute magnificent work of art 😊 Thank you, guys!❤
    This makes me think about my fathers mother, who suffers from bipolar disorder, when she was a patient at S:t Lars mental hospital i Sweden. This because in one of the pictures you see a patient getting "old fasion" ECT, which my grandmother was also treated with.

      I never could understand why anyone considered the Kennedys so special. Nothing about any of them impressed me much.

    A few puffs on the ol' pipe and I got to thinking. The Craig House sounds an awful like today's "celebrity" rehabs. Your exceptional presentation (as always) has given me much to ponder. I thank you, good sir :)
