He has God-like powers in building stuff compared to me. No idiot on this channel. My greatest achievement was upgrading a 386sx with a 486dx motherboard. Took me all day to plug in the tight power connecter. He would of had a fix in less than 2 minutes.

@@bazza5699 Thanks! I was over the moon when I managed to get it working, and not only does it look a pretty good match on to the case, games and things like workbench look great on it. When using the minimig core you really feel like you're using a real Amiga.
I think for any cave the MiSTer is arguably the first choice for what goes in. Especially if you manage a stellar setup like Neil has here.

I really like they way you set up the camera yourself and the computer. It is so natural and it feels less like a studio. The flowers or plants are also very nice. A drawback is that the voice changes when you turn towards the computer when you speak, but the audio here is very good. Also, great computer setup :)

Who gives a damn what other people think who have nothing to do but to criticize! I guarantee you they haven't gotten off their butts to make anything half as cool as that machine yet alone create so much content, provided to them for FREE, by you and others like you. What a cool build, and it will provide entertainment for years to come!

Great job Neil. Anyone who says you're doing it wrong obviously doesn't understand that this is your machine. They should build their own.
I think this is absolutely the perfect case for this. It gives you a great place to put the display and gives you that wonderful 'old school computer' feel and the MISTer can simulate basically all of them from the Amiga to the C64 to even 386/486. As far as the power button situation goes, my first thought was 'latching relay'...but I'm a little old-school that way I guess lol.
hearing a relay click would've been satisfying for sure! but my first thought was a latching logic circuit, which is probably what's on the board ^^
I thought having a latching power switch would be more fitting for a 386/486 type PC aesthetic as well.

The working power and activity LEDs are such a simple looking but nice addition.
Its , gorgeous, brilliant, beautiful all at the same time. Simply amazing and I love every inch of it.
What a fun system. I love that you made a system with modern wireless networking and connectivity for old school Atari style joysticks. Oh and I love the mouse house too. 😉😉😉

The MISter is an amazing piece of kit. After seeing your video I now have a nice little unit built and hidden away behind a 65" Sony A1 OLED. Not exactly the retro feel, but thinking back to being 12, I would have loved to hook my Amiga, SNES, MD etc up to a screen that big!
I like the "Italian" theme on the front buttons. :)
Don't use the scan doubler fx anymore. Go to the 2nd settings page and change the scaler from internal to custom, and choose one of the many scaling options. I use scanlines(soft) for most, and theres vertical ones for the arcade cores.

I have made something very similar to this, except I used an old Compaq PC case and it currently houses a Raspberry Pi, though the intention is to upgrade to a MiSTer soon.
I chose to use a beige case because I thought black looked too modern. I mounted the joystick ports at the rear to keep the cables away from the keyboard (I leave it plugged in all the time anyway, so easy access wasn't a priority).
I haven't fitted a reset switch yet, but I plan to locate it at the rear of the machine where it can't get bumped accidentally.
It's fantastic having a setup like this. The case may be mostly empty, but it actually feels like you have a real computer in front of you, one that's not going to get dragged off the desk by the weight of its own cables.
Awesome build! No need to defend a thing you did, it is 100% your build. I love that it has it's own flair and it reminds me of modding our trusty old 8-bits back in the 80s and 90s!
Take care of those speakers, I had those in the 90s and the pots were super noisy
For anybody else that wants to convert momentary to latch switch and doesn't have a drawer full of electronics, you can salvage one from an old PC case or buy them standalone, those little modules are quite standard (and probably cheaper than the board shown)
10:32 What makes FPGA so interesting is that it IS genuine hardware. It's a circuit-level recreation of vintage hardware that can be reconfigured on the fly. So, it's... like a clone board of an original system, rather than emulation.
It may or may not be an *exact* recreation of the original system, it may just be something broadly functionally equivalent, that's (partially) up to the core authors, and in the case of the joystick ports, for example, the human/machine interface being accurate. (a large part of using a Speccy, for example, is the various keyboards that machine had)
The right input device being used will make a massive difference for emulation too, but most people don't put in that much effort for emulation these days.
?? To be honest I don't find any different between FPGA and Emulation, now day Emulation become quite good unlike few year ago probably coz how those big company handle our favorite game like those Downloadable only game in PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii and some company delist it in digital store, even physical form become hassle now day as not that many game get physical form specially new PC game now who many of it use Steam (hate steam DRM btw but I like GOG for free DRM game), there still may reason of it but thanks to these reason emulation and FPGA born and it's have each weakness and strength but it's still better than let big greedy company handle our retro game.
@Marcel H In a true FPGA recreation, it'll be pretty much 1:1 with the orginal circuit diagram.
But sometimes that's not actually desirable.
One thing I really wish the mister project had is an ISA slot addon for use with the ao486 core. Then we'd be able to use real soundcards, video cards, etc... I have fond memories of the Soundblaster 16's text to speech software, but I don't think the necessary chip has been implemented on the ao486. I can always live in hope that some clever sausage makes one.

Can't believe this was a month ago already. Nearing the end of my own project that these videos inspired me to start. I went with a horizontal Desktop style case as well, black even. However not an enclosure that was meant to be a Computer. I've repurposed a discontinued anodized aluminum VGA/Audio Switcher. I'm at the last step of wiring in the momentary to latching switch/relay. The same one you have here. I wanted to make sure GND wasn't really GND. And no it's negative DC.
I think this is outstanding, and I am not sure how you could make it any better. Really well done.
Whilst wouldn’t have made all of the same choices that you did - this is your toy, and you shouldn’t let anyone tell you that you’re enjoying playing with it wrong! 🙂

Ahh, I remember those Goodmans speakers! An Argos special from back in the day! I still use the smaller Active 45's on my bedroom telly. I suppose if you really wanted to go overboard with the sound, one of those little Class D amplifier modules would fit in there quite nicely.

I actually had the exact same idea of putting a MiSTer inside an empty Sharp x68000 shell after your initial video (since nowadays working machines are way beyond my price range) and finally managed to track one down, so I'm looking forward to putting that together as a nice little no fuss all-in-one retro computer setup.

Great series, i liked how you demonstrated the inner workings, and your own improvisations to get things connected. Thanks also for posting the 9pin to USB adapter, as i have been looking for one of these for some time, in order to use my competition pro joystick - there are some available on eBay, which use hardware from the 90s! keep up the good work mate

Wonderful video Neil, I love seeing what people are doing with my cases and the love they pour into them. Yes it is true I will not make any more and the white cases are selling quite fast. In total at moment there are roughly 120 white and 180 black left.

Couldn't help but chuckle when the case was opened to reveal the dinky board, but this is a really cool rig. I think I need to do something similar now.

Aww, The Last Blade - one of the best fighting games developed. I loved the way Neil developed this project. I liked the sticker.
I’m looking forward to finishing up this video when I get some time. I think it looks great! It reminds me of my old Packard bell setup. That 66mhz pentium was my gateway into another world, much like my mister is now. Same feel, better hardware.
The Mister FPGA is the best unit I've bought in recent years, all my old hardware is packed away nicely and I'm able to just play all the old units on a nice PVM with a couple of different controllers with the original feel. Cool looking case, love that CRT, looks stunning. Cheers

Hey Neil, great to see some more MiSTer content on RMC. :) :) Fantastic build. I was waiting with baited breath to see how it turned out. Love the joystick ports at the front - particularly the 3d printed dust covers. The mouse house really made me smile too, loving that attention to detail.
The only thing I'd change (aside from having access to the SDCard) is having a USB hard drive in there. I quickly discovered a 128gig SDCard wasn't big enough, especially with NeoGeo and MegaCD games so bought a 1TB USB HD.
Can't wait to see more MiSTer content.
