Nice one . Taters first taters tuesday of the year and her first church camp ever . Matt must have some fond memories of pastor Matt and two coffeepots !
That trail at the stealth spot is my local morning walk spot. It ain’t the mountains but woods is woods!! Gotta take what you can find on the coastal plain! Glad you found it!!
1. When in Bowie go to Rip's Southern Restaurant not Applebee's. 2. Parts of Patuxent are very secure not because of wildlife but because they have Secret Service and other even more secret facilities back there embedded in the Patuxent refuge including a Secret Service airport. I once pulled over on the Laurel-Bowie Road and within 90 seconds my vehicle was surrounded by heavily armed security.
My parents ate at Rip’s when they first moved to Southern Maryland in the early 1960s. I’m not sure how old it is. The parts of Patuxent Wildlife Refuge (I think) you’re referring to used to be part of Fort Meade.
I think it’s crazy that the people who live along the trail don’t know they live along the trail. I’d just stick a sign in my yard that reads ADT hikers are welcome to camp. At least until the trail reached AT level foot traffic. Geez Stay safe!
My feedback to the ADT is going to be they really need to put a detailed Google style map. As it stands a lot of people don’t realize they live on it because they’d have to find the website and pay $70+ to get a gpx and then figure out what to do with that
I am so grateful Taters is with you, especially during these rainy days! I am praying that more people along this trail become aware of your presence and step up to provide safe refuge for you both when you need it the most! 🙏🙏♥️♥️
I was in Copenhagen back in summer of 2018. It was hotter than the blazes of perdition, and I really needed something cold to drink. I eventually found a 7-Eleven, only to find that I'd purchased sparkling water because I absolutely cannot read Danish. Not refreshing at all!
Judgement free zone: Its Ok to ask for help. No one is going to judge you. Exceptions: Directions, money, advice, and asking for help. Other than that you are good.
It’s more of a gut thing combined with the fact I enjoy camping with privacy. And also it can be quite hard to get a hold of anyone at a random church or other facility to ask permission
Thank goodness the Methodist allowed you to camp at their church, I was getting worried for you. Hopefully by the time you read this the worst of the rain has passed through. Thanks for sharing in the middle of all that rain.
We sent them a nice thank you note with pictures via email as we left. Turns out we could have probably stealth camped after that but it was nice not to have to worry
The more I watch you videos Matt, the more I think we were related in a previous life, definitely not brothers since I’m 21 years older than you. Maybe father ( or grandfather) and son. Your latest comment regarding “ not asking or perhaps refusing help” hit home with me. Maybe it’s a guy thing, who knows.😂
OK, you are going to be going through Greenblet Park. That's good. It's a very good park. There are a lot of trails that follow stream beds throughout the DC metro area. They're nice, but not near the monuments. Bet you have this all planned out. If you need help or a place to stay, let's get in contact. I'm sure I can work something out. You're in my area. I have friends who are big hikers with space in their house and a good back yard. I'm sure they'd love to hear about your adventures and can give you local advice. I'll try to keep an eye on this site. I'm working today and pretty busy until the evening.
Glad the church worked out! The lesson is to embrace the kindness of others! It's their way of wanting to contribute to a unique mission - your crossing the country on a trail unlike any other.
Apres now, le deluge! (Pace Louis XV)! Hope you can find some dry places to camp! Not easy. Afraid you've hit a real rainy patch which probably makes Matt long for the dry of New Mexico even with the sporadic water sources. Hike on! Tortoise (also better in the dry than in the rain.)
You know how, when you've been off trail for a while, missing it, and know you have at least another year before you can get back out there- BUT at least you have TH-camrs- fellow hikers-- friends, who will be sharing their trail experiences so you can look forward to at least vicariously enjoying the trail and even getting excited about one day, in the not-too-distant-future, walking those very paths yourself? This ADT series, so far, has NOT been that. In fact, it has been more like my high school Spanish class experience, where the teacher was so God-awful that he single-handedly made me forget everything I had learned up to his class and even made me forget why I was so excited about the language in the first place. Yeah, this is more like that. Except that I still like the 'teachers'.
Patuxent is a research refuge, so the government is doing all kinds of wildlife-related studies there. They probably keep it fenced because they don't want to risk trespassers adding (or removing) unknown elements into their research efforts.
In my defense, I’m not really from anywhere these days, and I barely speak English on a good day. I am nothing if not notorious for mispronouncing all the things…
The only camping I know in the area is Greenbelt Park. This is at highways 495 and 1, so it may be out of your way. Otherwise, somewhat knowing area ... I don't think you'll have camping until you get to the C &O canal. Don't know where you're coming into DC. Hotels along highway 1 close to the city have been pretty doggy in the past. Sorry. It's an expensive area. There is a youth hostel in downtown DC. But I expect you've done most of this planning. I'd be happy to help if you need help.
I believe the trail goes through Greenbelt park and then down through Rock Creek Park into the city. I don't own the maps so I could be wrong. That's convenient to the C&O, but not real convenient to the city's monumental core.
Well at least it is a legal camp spot and I feel safer about you camping there. I like that. Dont mind her she always looks like that. Funny. But at least its happy and bubbly. Hard to beat that.
Haven’t tried that one but I have tried a lot of different blister etc products. In general I find I don’t need anything beyond basic Walmart tape, properly light and wide shoes, and just time for my calluses to form up. But the challenges also vary depending on the climate I’m hiking through
Not that it matters, but Bowie is pronounced like bouy. Hmm, that closed/abandoned road was interesting. Rain? Well, it is April, but still this week has been much more than normal.
What sort of comments do you get from people who are walking on urban trails when they see you guys who are plainly through hiking? Something like: Are you guys lost - the AT is in the west of Maryland. I am so looking forward to sharing this hike with you all. Sorry we are no where near you or we would offer a secure back yard.
It depends. Some folks recognize what we’re doing and ask a bunch of questions. A lot of folks lately have kind of given us side eye and not engaged probably thinking we’re homeless. I actually try and make gear choices to visibly look like a hiker but you can only do so much
Hey, where are yall hiking along today (April 5). I'm up by BWI but have an appointment down in Annapolis. Would love to get you a drop if its convenient at all.
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikesAh ok, well good luck! I'm biking the C&O over the April 20th weekend, so I guess we won't cross paths then either. Have a blast guys!
I am so grateful you are documenting your adventure and sharing this with us! 😀 I have watched your progress from the very start, and will continue to watch til you get to the Pacific ocean, anticipating every day's posting! It's hard watching you both though being rained on as much as you have been so far! I pray more kind people learn of your presence on the trail and step up to provide safe refuge for you! 🙏🙏🙏♥️♥️♥️
I started watching you to from the very first video and your very entertaining and informative about hiking the trails thanks

Also sometimes letting random folks just camp can get problematic. I’ve heard of people start fires in trail angels yards before

Tater's hat is SUPER FIRE 🔥🔥🔥 First time seeing it up close. Where she get dat?
Awe thanks! Matt found it online for me, company is called sipsey wilder
Day 7. Wet and very “The Walking Dead” scene with the closed road and bridge. Road walking and cars. Loud.
I use to live in Glenn Dale. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
This channel is criminally underrated
Nicest thing anyone has said about us all day
I like Taters hat too
Applebees, “I like these trees” this episode it has it all 😂
Thanks. ✌🏻👊🏼

Also they have to keep the goatman contained…
Sweet!
I know this is late... but us Marylanders call the town Boo-ee, not Bow-ee.

In the inimitable words of Karen carpenter: rainy days and Mondays always get me down............
Tater Tuesdays are actually amazing
I lived in Bowie for 5 years. It's pronounced just like "buoy" which are the floaty things in water.
Have you ever tried Trail Toes? A product for your feet for hiking, running etc?
Haven’t tried that one but I have tried a lot of different blister etc products. In general I find I don’t need anything beyond basic Walmart tape, properly light and wide shoes, and just time for my calluses to form up. But the challenges also vary depending on the climate I’m hiking through
Home sweet (and wet) home for the night. Amen.
Отличное видео спасибо
So is this basically a very long road walk?
Mixed route with some roads and other trail sections. Similar to the ECT
Umbrellas? You're welcome!
You would think it would be a requirement for a “trail” to at least have shoulders on the road where it’s safe to walk.
Not that it matters, but Bowie is pronounced like bouy. Hmm, that closed/abandoned road was interesting. Rain? Well, it is April, but still this week has been much more than normal.

Where did you get your hat taters?
Matt found it for me online, company is called Sipsey wilder 😊
Myself and others really like that sweet lid that Tater’s sporting. Where might one acquire such beautiful headwear?
It is from a company I found called Sipsey Wilder. Really cool designs. I just wish they didn’t put that stupid circular logo so big.
