It was odd seeing you two in an urban environment but still not as odd as seeing you pull a canoe through the French Quarter. I really enjoyed this video, I was in Washington, D.C. in October so the sights are still fresh in my memory. Thanks for sharing.
Yup. Little tiny baby locks on the canal...from a time when the canal boats were tiny baby and we were a tiny baby nation! Glad you took advantage of the food trucks on The Mall!
@@garyoakman6187 I was raised on the Canal at mile 170. A cattle farm. I've been up and down the towpath by foot, bike and a canoe in The Potomac more times than I can count. I KNEW folks that had actually worked on the Canal so, I have The C & O pretty sussed. The US didn't arrive as a big player on the world stage till after WW I. Even in the 1930's it took weeks to cross the country on dirt roads. The Canal was Started in 1828 when we were 24 states. (Yes, I know The country, Including Washington DC ,was built on the backs of Enslaved people and starving Irish Immigrants. We owe Them a debt of gratitude.) The nation was large in size, then, but parochial in its mind set. In many ways it still is. And besides, I was riffing on Masochists comment on "Tiny Baby'"locks....as a joke.
Born and raised around DC. Great seeing some of the sights again. Make sure to check out the general store in Flintstone Md. right off the C&O canal in western Md. if it is still there. We did a drilling job on the lawn of the Smithsonian and 100 feet down we were still pulling up trash in our sample spoon. I am really enjoying this video series, Thanks.
Reminds me of an old song: "hello pavement my old friend, I've come to walk on you again". See if that puts a tune in your head for awhile(its stuck in mine). The trashed thing looked like a very old fire call box. When I was there 76 - 79 we called the river, "The Peutomic". It was filthy. Good video. Nice healthy looking fox. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick
That was a fire alarm box? I have seen a lot of fire alarm boxes in my life, but I have never seen any that looked like that. The ones I have seen were just small red boxes with a lever on them. Sometimes a blue one next to it for the police. I would have never guessed that was a fire alarm box. Washington must have had fancier fire alarm boxes.
@@MaxZomboni Yes sadly the boxes are mostly gutted these days but the one found in this video was only partly robbed of its outer door, the Gamewell inner workings (similar to a wind up clock) was still preasent with the inner trigger lever sticking through the inner box shell. I worked on some of these things when Cincinnati had a working system up to 35 years ago.
@@MaxZomboni It wasn't what I was hired to do (2-way radio repair) but when the city had 3 shifts in the department we had the responsibility to keep the system working for public safety. I love seeing the ornate ones in DC when I visited a while ago... brought back my fond memories of chasing downed fire alarm wires at 3AM ;) Cheers!
From Canada but currently hiking in Portugal and watching your videos at the end of the day. Thanks so much for all this work you do! Love following along.
I just finished the Rota Vicentina, aka The Fishermen’s Trail. Highly recommend but not long compared to what you do, only 250kms or so but you can extend in by doing the coast, which I did - spectacular scenery - and then circling back up in the Historical Trail. But the weather is pretty nice and virtually no road walking, so not sure if you’d like it 🤣
I had been to DC a few times as both a child and adult but never visited Georgetown and seen the canal and locks. I was so amazed that this started in such an urban area and most mostly unseen by all of the tourists you encountered. Even more so I was happy to see how quickly it went from urban to rural. I've ridden the trail from DC to Cumberland and looking forward to "walking" along part of it again with you.
Interesting to see the section of the C&O in DC. I section hiked the C&O canal a lot growing up in Boy Scouts, but it was mostly the western sections. Great Falls was about as far south as we ever made it. Enjoy your time on the tow path and the reprieve from road walks for a bit.
I’m glad that you both were able to enjoy DC, there sure were a lot of tourists there. Thank you for showing the different sights, I’ve never been there so it was nice to see the monuments etc. You two stay safe and happy hiking. God bless
I know I will be on the Katy Trail for at least a while. Unfortunately, the ADT website doesn’t have a detailed map showing exactly where everything goes.
Hey Y'all. I got a few days behind your trip due to my trip to view the giant shadow. Had daughters from Seattle WA and Jacksonville FL join me for a trip to southern Missouri to view a celestial event.
Thanks for the video tour of Washington DC. But way too crowded . Great picture of you two in front of the capitol though with the ominous cloud formations in the background. Hope you are enjoying the relative solitude and the more pleasant footing on the C & O canal trails. - Geo
Hmmm. I guess my previous comment was kind of mean. Sorry about that - I deleted it. I'm hung over and grumpy. Just go easy on folks who are just out enjoying themselves. Don't we want more people enjoying themselves and discovering the world in their own varied and different ways? Anyhow, I do appreciate what you're doing. Keep walking, brother!
Hey Matt, can I use a portions of this in a presentation I'm doing on route/trail markings? From 11:59 to 13:30 I'd use the route marking shots and you getting "lost." Pesention will be virtual and not on TH-cam. Though I will record if your intrested. Kind regards, Natfoot
I thought the trail went down the length of Rock Creek for some reason. There is a nice parallel trail to the road in Greenbelt Park which comes out near the campground or the south exit of the park.
My map data had a few alternates in the area. We prioritized wanting to hike through the national mall but we could have stayed on the river north of the city or gone a bit further south
DC is a great walking city. It feels like kayaking from Delmarva to DC might avoid a lot of road walking, but that would be a completely different trip.
Enjoy the C&O Canal after all that road walking. 184.5 miles of it is almost all dirt towpath with some road crossings. I've been on the entire C&O Canal mostly by bicycle.
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes You're going to love the Paw Paw Tunnel which is about 6/10th of a mile long and pitch black. That will be about 10 miles before Old Town.
American Discovery Asphalt Trail? Not one blister hiking the A.T., but the hike down the Oregon Coast Trail was mainly on Hwy's 1 and 101....tore my feet up. Go figure. Take care, good vibes, Crackerjack.
Yeah, Southern Florida was brutal on me when I did Key West to Canada. Hard surface plus flat. As far as the ADT I am currently on the CNO towpath and it looks like things are going to be changing. Majorly.
We stayed at the greenbelt campground a couple months ago, I ran the trails there all 4 days. The campground was so so but would suck in a downpour!! Hotel was by far the better option 😉
As long as you pick a slanted grassy tent site (which I do anyway) they wouldn’t be too bad. It’s just the whole setting up / breaking down in a downpour
I just started watching his channel. The only problem I see with his videos is that like a lot of thru hikers he seems more focused on crushing miles then seeing the trail. If I heard him right he said he is taking every possible shortcut he can.
That’s what I’ve heard from others / seen on hiker notes. Section I’m on now for example he left the C&O to shortcut on a road. To each their own but I’m not interested in doing that
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes His last video Day 54. The Big Shortcut says it all. I will give it to him though, he is honest about how he is hiking. I can't stand TH-cam hikers who cut a 100 miles off the trail, and then just pretend like nothing happened. That's when I stop watching them.

Day 9. Into the belly of the Beast, the dreaded Swamp. Great footage of the monuments. Agree the White House is small. And surrounded by buildings. The television shots we have been accustomed to make it look bigger and in a field / meadow.
